Frameworks And 'traditional' coding

Hello Sorry if this too open ended for this forum, but here goes. I mostly use languages such as PHP and Javascript without frameworks (e.g Jquery, Drupal, CakePHP). The only real exception to this for me, is Wordpress when 'traditional' coding is slower for building information sites. I've dabbled with several frameworks over the past year and despite everyone else's (seemingly) good experiences with them, I seem to of hit a roadblock. My basic problem is that for the amount of time invested in effectively relearning a language, I don't get a lot in return. Jqeury as an example. There is really very little in that, that I couldn't accomplish easily with a few getElement.. commands. So my question is, what advantages do frameworks offer over previous coding styles? algorithm advice for finding maximum items within a time period

Hi everyone. I have a database schema that is similar to the following: | User | Event | Date |--------|---------------|------ | 111 | Walked dog | 2009-10-1 | 222 | Walked dog | 2009-10-2 | 333 | Fed Fish | 2009-10-5 | 222 | Did Laundry | 2009-10-6 | 111 | Fed Fish | 2009-10-7 | 111 | Walked dog | 2009-10-18 | 222 | Walked dog | 2009-10-19 | 111 | Fed Fish | 2009-10-21 I would like to produce a query that returns the maximum number of times a user performs some action within a time period. For example, given a time period of 5 days, what is the maximum number of times user 111 walked the dog? The most obvious solution would be to start at some zero point and move forward each day, summing up 5 day periods along the way, then taking the maximum total out of all the 5 day windows. the approach seems incredibly costly however. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Get String Instead of Source - Xcode Cocoa

Hello everyone, I have a program that will scan the contents of a website, and display it in a textbox. The problem is that it shows the html source. For example if my html code was: <html> <body> <p>Hello</p> </body> </html> instead of just showing hello, it'll show the code above... How can I get my objective c program to just read the hello, and not the html source.. I was assuming that it was the encoding when reading the website, but I might be possibly wrong.. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me a reasonable answer.. Best Regards, Kevin

Is the JavaScript RegExp implicit method deprecated?

So everyone knows what I mean by "implicit methods"? They're like those default properties from the Windows COM days of yore, where you could type something like val = obj(arguments) and it would be interpreted as val = obj.defaultMethod(arguments) I just found out JavaScript has the same thing: the default method of a RegExp object appears to be 'exec', as in /(\w{4})/('yip jump man')[1] ==> jump This even works when the RegExp object is assigned to a variable, and even when it's created with the RegExp constructor, instead of /.../, which is good news to us fans of referential transparency. Where is this documented, and/or is it deprecated?

Rails, search item in different model?

Hi Everyone, I have a kase model which I am using a simple search form in. The problem I am having is some kases are linked to companies through a company model, and people through a people model. Custom Item in ListActivity on Android

Hello everyone, I've spent hours reading through the SDK reference, googling and reading tutorials - but I still can't figure it out. I would like to know how to create a custom list item in the ListActivity widget on Android. Something similar to a Twitter client interface. Each list item has different types of text, possibly an icon, etc. Does anyone know of any resources that would help me understand the process of creating something like that? How to sort TBB concurrent_vector or concurrent_queue?

Now I have a solver in that I need to keep a set of self-defined data type objects in a concurrent_vector or queue. It has to be concurrent because the objects come from different threads.With this concurrent container, I hope to sort these objects, eliminate duplicates and send them back when other threads need them. However, I know TBB offers concurrent_vector and concurrent_queue which can be read and written concurrently from different threads. But how to sort the objects inside a container? Does everyone know how to do that? Thanks.

Wanted red color for text in the error message in the log file

Hello Everyone, I have a question but not sure it is possible or not. I am using apache logger for my logging which creates a log file which works fine with no issues.my question is when i open the log file i get the different messages like messages with INFO,DEBGU,ERROR etc. But i wanted to see the error message in red color in text in my logger file.. is it possible? So in that way if some one opens my log file if some thing is there in red they can clearly can guess that it is an error message.. Is it possible.. I need a program to store the database script for oracle

We are developing a project that has 3 enviroments (development, test, production) So there are 3 databases (actually more than 3, because we have 5 customers so we have more than 10 databases) and they must be synchronised. There are 30 coders working for this project. Everone adds, deletes, and changes procedures, table columns etc. We need a program to store our database scripts like visual studio's team foundation server. See the change history of script file. Everyone must access that program and be able to put their scripts. Recover previous versions of script file. Execute these scripts over a selected database. Compare databases by procedures (not only by name, by content of procedure), functions, table columns, packages etc. I am searching a program like that. Which one do you suggest me?

Dynamic resize with MPlayer and PyGTK

Hi everyone; I've wrote a piece of code in python and pygtk for an embeded mplayer in a gui. I assume I use GtkSocket and the slave mode of mplayer with the -wid option. But I've got an issue, when the size of my GTK window is smaller than my stream, the stream appears to be cropped. And when the size of my window is bigger than my stream, the stream appear centred inside the widget which embed MPlayer. (a gtk.Frame but I've also try with a gtk.DrawingArea) I would like to know how I can get my stream resize dynamically depending on the window's size. I don't want to use Glade or any GUI builder. Thanks in advance for any help, and please excuse my poor english.

Does an updated 'vimtutor' exist?

vim comes with a nice built-in interactive tutorial. You can access this tutorial by just running: $ vimtutor It is very easy to use because it creates working cases for basic commands. Is there a more advanced tutorial? Has any one though to build one to help uses take their VIM skills to the next level. Most tutorial and cheat-sheet sites out there for vim only show commands but not necessarily specific uses and examples. Is there an advance tutorial out there? Is this the type of project that could be an open source document that everyone can add examples to? Like a Vim Interactive Wiki or similar to the RegEx sites that have the built in regex testers.

Yet another C# Deadlock Debugging Question

Hi All, I have a multi-threaded application build in C# using VS2010 Professional. It's quite a large application and we've experienced the classing GUI cross-threading and deadlock issues before, but in the past month we've noticed the appears to lock up when left idle for around 20-30 minutes. The application is irresponsive and although it will repaint itself when other windows are dragged in front of the application and over it, the GUI still appears to be locked... interstingly (unlike if the GUI thread is being used for a considerable amount of time) the Close, Maximise and minimise buttons are also irresponsive and when clicked the little (Not Responding...) text is not displayed in the title of the application i.e. Windows still seems to think it's running fine. If I break/pause the application using the debugger, and view the threads that are running. There are 3 threads of our managed code that are running, and a few other worker threads whom the source code cannot be displayed for. The 3 threads that run are: The main/GUI thread A thread that loops indefinitely A thread that loops indefinitely If I step into threads 2 and 3, they appear to be looping correctly. They do not share locks (even with the main GUI thread) and they are not using the GUI thread at all. When stepping into the main/GUI thread however, it's broken on Application.Run... This problem screams deadlock to me, but what I don't understand is if it's deadlock, why can't I see the line of code the main/GUI thread is hanging on? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Let me know if you need more information... Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! Much appreciated! I've marked the answer that solved my initial problem of determining where on the main/UI thread the application hangs (I handn't turned off the "Enable Just My Code" option). The overall issue I was experiencing was indeed Deadlock, however. After obtaining the call-stack and popping the top half of it into Google I came across this which explains exactly what I was experiencing... http://timl.net/ This references a lovely guide to debugging the issue... http://www.aaronlerch.com/blog/2008/12/15/debugging-ui/ This identified a control I was constructing off the GUI thread. I did know this, however, and was marshalling calls correctly, but what I didn't realise was that behind the scenes this Control was subscribing to an event or set of events that are triggered when e.g. a Windows session is unlocked or the screensaver exits. These calls are always made on the main/UI thread and were blocking when it saw the call was made on the incorrect thread. Kim explains in more detail here... http://krgreenlee.blogspot.com/2007/09/onuserpreferencechanged-hang.html In the end I found an alternative solution which did not require this Control off the main/UI thread. That appears to have solved the problem and the application no longer hangs. I hope this helps anyone who's confronted by a similar problem. Thanks again to everyone on here who helped! Roo -----------------------------------------------------SOLUTION II-------------------------------------------------- Aren't threading issues delightful...you think you've solved it, and a month down the line it pops back up again. I still believe the solution above resolved an issue that would cause simillar behaviour, but we encountered the problem again. As we spent a while debugging this, I thought I'd update this question with our (hopefully) final solution: The problem appears to have been a bug in the Infragistics components in the WinForms 2010.1 release (no hot fixes). We had been running from around the time the freeze issue appeared (but had also added a bunch of other stuff too). After upgrading to WinForms 2010.3, we've yet to reproduce the issue (deja vu). See my question here for a bit more information: 'http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4077822/net-4-0-and-the-dreaded-onuserpreferencechanged-hang'. Hans has given a nice summary of the general issue. Hi everyone I am new to mongo, this is my db design: product := { name: str group: ref, comments: [ ref, ref, ref, ref ] } comments := { ... a bunch of comments stuff } tag := { _id: int, #Need this for online requests tag: str, products: [ {product: ref, score: float}, ... ], comments: [ {comment: ref, score: float}, ...], } So my usage pattern is: GIVEN a product, find comments that have certain tag and sort them accordingly. My current approach involves: Look for that tag object that has tag=myTag pull all the comments out, sorted look for that product where product.name=myProduct pull all the comments out (which are dbrefs by the way) loop through the result of 2, and checking if they are in 4, (this I can do a limit 10) etc. It's pretty inefficient. Any better methods?

Hello everyone, I am designing a transportation agency/workflow system, and it including 3 types of people, customer who requests to transport some stuff, drivers who deliver the stuff, and truck manager who manages transport source/destination truck coordination and communicates/organizes drivers. The system is expected to be a web site, and 3 kinds of people could use the web site to submit request, accept request, monitor status of specific stuff transportation, etc. The web site is more like an open agency or a workflow system. I am wondering whether there are any existing technologies, tools or projects (better to be open source, but not a must) which I could build my application faster based on? Using a RegEx in a SQL Query

Hey Everyone, Here's the situation I'm in: We have a field in our database that contains a 3 digit number, surrounded by some text. This number is actually a PK in another table, and I need to extract this out so I can implement a proper FK relationship. Here's an example of what would currently reside in the column: Some Text Goes Here - (305) Followed By Some More Text So, what I'm looking to do is extract the '305' from the column, and hopefully end up with a result that looks something like this (pseudo code) SELECT <My Extracted Value>, Original Column Text, Id FROM dbo.MyTable It seems to me that using a Regex match in my query is the most effective way to do this. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Documents/links on preventing HTML form fiddling?

Hi everyone, I'm using ASP.Net but my question is a little more general than that. I'm interested in reading about strategies to prevent users from fooling with their HTML form values and links in an attempt to update records that don't belong to them. For instance, if my application dealt with used cars and had links to add/remove inventory, which included as part of the URL the userid, what can I do to intercept attempts to munge the link and put someone else's ID in there? In this limited instance I can always run a check at the server to ensure that userid XYZ actually has rights to car ABC, but I was curious what other strategies are out there to keep the clever at bay. (Doing a checksum of the page, perhaps? Not sure.) Thanks for your input.

Cocoa window position anomaly

Hello everyone, I have a weird problem with positioning a window on screen. I want to center the window on the screen, but i don't know how to do that. Here's what i've got. The window is created from nib by the main controller: IdentFormController *ftf = [[IdentFormController alloc] initWithWindowNibName:@"IdentForm"]; [[ftf window] makeKeyAndOrderFront:self]; Now the IdentFormController has awakeFromNib() method in which it tries to position the window. For the sake of simplicity i've just tried to do setFrameOrigin(NSMakePoint(0, 0)). What happens is as follows: The first time i create this window, everything works as expected. But if i create it again after releasing the previous, it starts appearing at random positions. Why does it do that?

Git pull error: unable to create temporary sha1 filename

Hi everyone, I've got a small git repo setup with the only real purpose to be able to develop locally on several machines (work, home, laptop). Thus I have one branch and I commit/push once I leave a computer, pull once I sit down at the next. Has worked fine, up to now that is. Now when I pull on my 'live test' machine, I get the following: remote: Counting objects: 38, done. remote: Compressiremote: ng objects: 100% (20/20), done. remote: Total 20 (delta 17), reused 0 (delta 0) error: unable to create temporary sha1 filename .git/objects/ed: File exists fatal: failed to write object fatal: unpack-objects failed Searching around the net the only real answer I could find was the following: http://marc.info/?l=git&m=122720741928774&w=2 which basically states that this is a bogus error that's on top of the pile and thus says nothing about what really is wrong. Where do I go from here to find out what is wrong? Edit: Removed the local copy and re-cloned

Creating java executable using JNI ?

I am trying to create executable under windows platform for Java program using JNI ,C/C++ and invocation API, I have already created jar file for my program which includes all dependencies. I want to embed it in exe file, I was successful in running simple main class(present in file system) using JNI invocation API, I am planning to add jar file as resource in C/C++ program. But I don't know how do I run that jar file , One option is create temporary jar file on file system and run it using java, But I do not want to expose my jar file to everyone for security reasons, How can I run serialized jar file on the fly using JNI ?

How to get hudson to display the SCM diff since last build in the individual build page

I'm not sure it's even possible, but my command line usecase goes something like this: do svn update do a svn log -l {how many times since my last commit - 1} do a `svn diff -rHEAD:{my last commit revision + 1} and try to get an overview of what happened since last time I touched the code. I get a lot of valuable information from this, and would like everybody in my team to get the same feeling of control and overview of the code base. Not everyone in my team is comfortable with the command line but like the hudson interface. So; is there a way to the the commit diff since last build (we do a build per commit) in the individual build page?

Enable editing does not call didSelectRowAtIndexPath ??

Hi I have a UITableViewController where the user should be able to edit the items. In order to enable editing i use this : self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = self.editButtonItem; And for everyone, how does not know where self.editButtonItem comes from, it is predefined by the SDK. So, now when I press on any item, this method is called : - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath but as soon as I hit the edit button and while editing is active, this method does not seemed to be called. Any idea what I missing ? Picking Random Names

I saw an interesting post sometime back but with no solution. Trying luck here: There is a table which contain 10 names (U1, U2, U3..and so on). I have to choose 5 names everyday, and display one as the Editor and 4 as Contributors While selecting the random names, I have to also consider that if one user is selected as Editor, he cannot become editor again till everyone got their chance. The output should look similar to the following: Editor Cont1 Cont2 Cont3 Cont4 20-Jun U1 U8 U9 U3 U4 21-Jun U7 U2 U5 U6 U10 22-Jun U3 U4 U9 U2 U8 23-Jun U4 U8 U3 U5 U2 and so on..
