  • Which technologies does Tomcat support?

    I read a lot about GlassFish application server that it supports the whole Java EE 6 specification. But which does Tomcat support? I know that Tomcat is a JSP/Servlet container, but I see articles in web about "JSF and Tomcat", "Hibernate and Tomcat" and many more. Can tomcat play with these technologies: EJB, JSF, JPA, Hibernate, Spring, etc..?

    By default DB connections of JPA applications are configured in the META-INF/persistence.xml, when the application is not deployed to a full Java EE application server. In my opinion it is not very elegant to place such environment specific configuration into a file that is inside a .war file. How could a DB connection of a Servlet based JPA application be configured more flexible (=outside of the .war file)?

  • Get scanner to include but ignore quoted text?

    Basically my problem is this, I need to parse text where , is the delimiter but anything in " " quotes should not be checked for a delimiter. Is this what the Scanner.skip method is for? I would check it myself but I don't understand how to write a regex pattern in java where the token is something in between two " ". I also want to include any quoted text in the proper token which was delimited by the valid ,.

  • Java - StackOverflow Error on recursive 2D boolean array method that shouldn't happen.

    Hey everyone, I'm working on a runnable java applet that has a fill feature much like the fill method in drawing programs such as Microsoft Paint. This is how my filling method works: 1.) The applet gets the color that the user clicked on using .getRGB 2.) The applet creates a 2D boolean array of all the pixels in the window, with the value "true" if that pixel is the same color as the color clicked on or "false" if not. The point of this step is to keep the .getRGB method out of the recursive method to hopefully prevent this error. 3.) The applet recursively searches the 2D array of booleans where the user clicked, recording each adjacent point that is "true" in an ArrayList. The method then changes each point it records to false and continues. 4.) The applet paints every point stored in the ArrayList to a user selected color. All of the above steps work PERFECTLY if the user clicks within a small area, where only a few thousand pixels or so have their color changed.     Kurt Kennett from Microsoft has offered up a handy new tool. This tool is useful for creating a boot disk for x86 Windows CE systems that use the BIOSLoader. This is especially useful for creating disks with formats other than FAT16, which are fairly easy to create. I am letting you know about this new tool, but I have to be honest in telling you that I haven’t used it myself because it is for Windows Vista and Windows 7 – which I don’t have available right now. But you can bet that I will be setting up a virtual machine to give it a try. Here is what Kurt has to say about the tool: Download the DiskPrep Tool  DiskPrep can prepare any hard disk that can be attached to your development PC so that it can boot your X86-based Windows CE OS Design. USB disks (including disk "keys"), Compact Flash Cards, and SD cards all work if your system bios can boot from that type of media. FAT16, FAT32, and exFAT all supported. DOS is not used - the program prepares the bios loader on the disk and only uses that. If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can use VHD files for VirtualPC.   • Embedded Web Server Vs External Web Server

    So I've thought of creating a web application in either Lisp or another functional language and was thinking of embedding the web server into the application (have my application handle the HTTP requests). I don't see any issues with that, however, I'm new to creating web applications (and in the grand scheme of things, programming as well). Is there any drawbacks to handling HTTP requests within your program instead of using a web server? Are there any benefits?

    So a client of mine wants his homepage to start off something like this: http://www.roche-bobois.com/#/en-CA/home (It's basically a Flash intro that starts with a vector drawing of a furniture showroom that eventually transitions into the image of the actual showroom). Given that some of his users will be using an iPad to view his site, what are some of the alternatives that other developers here use? I'm thinking: Option 1: With PHP, detect if the user is using an iPad/iPhone by checking their user agent string. If they are using a mobile device, then forward to m.abccompany.com (mobile version of the site). Option 2: Convert the Flash video to MP4 or AVI and then embed that, which would allow all users to view his site. Any suggestions if either of these approaches are a good idea?

  • Best option for PDF viewer embedded in web app

    I have a web app that needs to be able to display a PDF. It needs to allow the user to page through the PDF, and my application needs to be able to know which page is currently being viewed, because other aspects of the web app will change based on the current page. Ideally it would not be dependent on the client having Adobe Reader but I could probably support that dependency. What are my best options for this? My application stack consists of ASP.NET 4 along with optionally Silverlight 5. Also, I could use something that is client-side based as well using JavaScript / HTML if such a thing exists. I found ComponentOne's offering for this and that seems like the leading candidate at this point, but I want to know if there are other options I should consider. Edit: Per Fosco's comment, converting the PDF to another format (such as HTML) might be an option, as long as I could tie back parts of the converted document to the original PDF page #s. Another note: this has to run entirely on our servers. It would not be acceptable to use a third-party service to view the PDFs.
