VMWare server: virtual machine start-up reaches 95% and hangs

This problem cropped up today, after updating my eVGA motherboard's chipset in order to try and fix an unrelated issue. After installing the chipset update (contained SATA and Ethernet drivers), every time I've tried to start my Ubuntu VM, it reaches 95% in the web interface and then just hangs. I'm using VMWare Server 2.0.2, running it within Windows 7 64-bit. I haven't had any issues up until now, and I suspect it has something to do with the chipset update. I've already tried reinstalling VMWare itself, removing the VM from the inventory and re-adding it, and neither has proved successful. I'm also not sure how to kill the VMware server process itself once the start-up hangs; I've only been able to try again by rebooting (as none of the VMWare Services listed kill the server process itself). Any insights? Edit: Uhhh...as an addendum: I have a cron job set up on my Ubuntu VM that runs every 20 minutes. The VM is still listed in the VMWare web interface as at 95% of startup, and the start/stop buttons are still disabled, but the cronjob just ran. I also tested SSH, and I was able to tunnel into the Ubuntu VM as well. Now I'm really confused. Edit #2: I just started a thread on the VMWare Server support forums on this same topic. Remote Desktop - remote computer that was reached is not the one you specified

We just setup some new Windows 2008 R2 servers and we are unable to Remote Desktop into them from our Windows 7 desktops. Remote desktop connects, but after we provide credentials we get: The connection cannot be completed because the remote computer that was reached is not the one you specified. This could be caused by an outdated entry in the DNS cache. Try using the IP address of the computer instead of the name. If we connect from Windows 7 to a machine not running Windows 2008 R2, or from a machine not running Windows 7 to the Windows 2008 R2 server, it works fine. Likewise if we connect to the Windows 2008 R2 server from Windows 7 via the IP address then it works fine (although that causes other problems later). I've only found one other mention of someone having this problem, so I don't think it is just our network. Any suggestions on how to connect from Windows 7 to Windows 2008 R2 via DNS? Both are 64-bit. Update: Turns out it does not need to be R2 to get the error. We have another server that is Windows 2008 R1 64-bit that also fails.

There is no problems with the server in its day to day functions but i am getting a Warning in the Event Log every 5 minutes with the following: Windows System Resource Manager encountered the following error 0x80010117. User Name will not be logged in the subsequent event logs. Error 0x80010117 User Action Address the error condition, and then try again. This has been happening for over 2 weeks now and i cannot find anything online to help! If i could have some help, then it would much appreciated. Thanks

Static IP settings on Windows 2003 server not getting saved

We have a Dell PowerEgde 1950 server with Broadcom NetXtreme gigabit ethernet card, and we are facing a strange problem with static IP assignment. When we assign a static IP to this broadcom NIC, settings are not getting saved. Following are the steps to reproduce problem open TCP/IP properties window for broadcom NIC manually enter static IP address and other details like gateway, DNS, etc. apply and close properties dialog. re-open TCP/IP properties windows, you will see your static IP settings lost and changed to "obtain IP address manually" but when checked using ipconfig command, you will still see your same static IP settings but, when checked using ipconfig command after rebooting server, these static ip settings are completely gone and automatically obtained IP is assigned Supplementary information: Recently we had formatted this server and installed windows 2003 from OEM windows setup CD (not from OS installation CD received from Dell). After windows installation was over, broadcom NIC drivers were installed.

Exchange 2010 add mailbox server to DAG error

Hello, i'm having some problems when adding a second mailbox server to my DAG in Exchange 2010. The test setup goes like this: 1x windows server 2008 (DC/DNS) 2x windows server 2008 (Exchange 2010) I have made sure all services are up and running and that the "Exchange Trusted Subsystem" account is set as a local admin. When i create a DAG i can add the first mailbox server (A) without any problems, but when i go to add the second (B) it gives me an error saying "Unable to contact the Cluster service on 1 other members (member) of the Database availability group. It does the same if i add (B) first and then try to add (A). Server with IIS and Apache - how to SSL encrypt Apache with IIS

I have a Windows Server 2003 box already setup and working with IIS 6. IIS is set to serve a site out over both HTTP and HTTPS connections using default ports. For various reasons I need to set Apache up on the same server and it needs to serve its pages to end-users as SSL encrypted HTTPS pages. Neither IIS or Apache are (or are ever likely to be) particularly high traffic or high usage. The way I see it there are two possible ways this could be done. Either export the SSL cert from IIS,set it up in Apache and get Apache to server the HTTPS connections itself over a non-default port. Or use IIS to proxy Apache in some way over it's existing SSL security. What is going to end up easiest to setup, configure, maintain and run? Which is going to work best? Has anyone done this sort of thing before? Any tips or things to look out for?

Problems with self-signed SSL certificate for SSTP in Windows Server Foundation 2008

I am trying to configure SSTP in Windows Server Foundation 2008. I want to use a self-signed SSL certificate to do authentication. When the server is running, I get the following error when trying to connect: 0x800B0109: A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate that is not trusted by the trust provider. I created the self-signed certificate in the IIS "Server Certificates" panel. From that panel, I exported the certificate, with the private key, to a .pfx file. I installed this certificate on the client computer which I tried to connect from. The certificate bound to the SSL listener in the RRAS-Security panel is present in the Trusted Root Certificate Authority stores on both machines. I've been getting super annoyed setting up certificates. Any advice here?

All i need to setup is a user and password so that i can ftp into the server from my home computer and upload files into the wwwroot directory. User Provisioning Tool for SQL Server 2008?

Yesterday I moved my machine from one domain to another - foolishly forgetting the implications for my local instance of SQL Server! Mixed Mode authentication is not enabled, and the only local account login has only "public" permissions. SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 had a tool called the User Provisioning Tool for Windows Vista (sqlprov.exe) which allowed you to add Domain Users to a local SQL 2005 instance (it doesn't work against SQL 2008 btw) - my question is.. is there a similar tool for SQL Server 2008 or am I going to have to do a reinstall? Also let me know if you think this belongs on StackOverflow

I need to get VMWare Server running inside of a VMWare ESXi virtual machine

Yes, I know running a virtual machine inside of a virtual machine is a bad idea. Yes, I know it will be very slow. However, our production system required VMs in VMWare server and I do not want to setup a real server for each of our developers for testing. I would like to be able to setup all of the VMWare servers (that mimic our production environment) on one ESXi server. I have found as much info as I can about this topic and I have tried what was suggested here and here. I have not been able to get any of these suggestions to work, I still get the VM cannot run inside of a VM error. If there are any other suggestions that anybody else have that would be great thanks.

Troubleshooting mailserver (Postfix, Dovecot) on Ubuntu Server 9.10?

Hi, I have configured a mail server with Postfix and Dovecot on Ubuntu Server 9.10. I followed the guidelines here (using Maildir): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Dovecot The tests seemed alright so I connected it to GMail which is able to connect and fetch e-mails. But since there's no e-mail in the Maildir/ directory I can't decide if the problem is Postfix or Dovecot. And I am totally new to mailservers so I don't know where to start troubleshooting. So, I want to start by testing Dovecot. How can I create a fake "Hello World"-email directly on the server (using a text editor) so that I can try to fetch it with GMail? If Dovecot is alright, where do I start looking for errors in Postfix? Thank you for your time. Christoffer

Windows Clients: Windows or Linux Domain Controller?

I'm planning to set up a domain controller for our small computer laboratory. I'm a little confused as to what operating system to use for our domain controller. What's in the lab: The lab has 25 units running a mix of Windows 7 and Windows XP. The domain controller will only have 2GB of RAM running a C2D E7200. (Is this enough?) What we want: The Domain Controller will also be running a git server. The Domain Controller will also be used as a general development machine (mostly Java, PHP). A way to centralize the updates for the windows clients, so that they won't have to download the same patches from the remote site. The machines would just query them from the local domain controller and get the updates from there. Our head recommended that I virtualize a Windows Server 2008 system under a Linux host and use the former as a domain controller and the latter for development or the other way around. A comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of using a Linux distribution or Windows Server 2008 in this situation would also be appreciated. As you may have noticed by now, I'm kinda new to setting up a domain so I hope you guys will be able to help me. Thank you.

I'm planning on deploying my ASP.NET Web app in the production environment using a Windows Server 2003 machine. But I know nothing about the CPU brand names and what's best. I know 4 GB RAM, with anything over 3 GHz clock speed will be a good bet and will serve a large number of users. But tell me what's the latest and greatest processor brand-names for running a Windows Server 2003 OS today? And what edition of the Windows 2003 Server do I need out of the following, if I have to run a website to support about 100,000 (a hundred thousand) users, 60% of who are expected to be online at all times? Will that be sufficient for the above user population?

How do I identify and fix the cause of transaction log growth on SIMPLE recovery model databases?

I recently upgraded our SQL Server 2008 installations to service pack 2. One of our databases is on the simple recovery model, but its transaction log is growing extremely fast. The path I'm currently investigating is that we have a transaction somewhere out there stuck in active state. Correct me if my line of thinking is off, as I'm not a SQL Server expert. If this is correct, how do I erase that transaction so that my transaction log is truncated as usual?

I'm using FOG as a TFTP / PXE server and would like to be able to boot a FreeBSD LiveCD (specifically pfSense, but it could be any LiveCD, really); I've found HOWTOs for booting a "netboot" BSD but they all seem to use a BSD server. So: Is it possible to PXE boot BSD from a Linux server? Is it possible to PXE boot a BSD LiveCD? Is it possible to PXE boot a Linux LiveCD? My main motivation is to be able to boot small LiveCD images (e.g. < 100MB) that I may only use once and don't want to burn a physical CD for.

SQL Server 2008 Express - "Best" backup solution?

Hi! What backup solutions would you recommend when using SQL Server 2008 express? I'm pretty new to SQL Server, but as I'm coming from an MySql background i thought of setting up replication on another computer and just take x-copy backups of that server. But unfortanetly replication is not available in the express edition. The site is heavily accessed, so there has to be no delays och downtime. I'm also thinking of doing a backup twice a day or something. What would you recommend? I have multiple computers I can use, but don't know if that helps me since i'm using the express version. Lots of TIME_WAIT connections in netstat (Windows Server 2008)

I'm having some issues on a Windows 2008 server with some network connections not going through. For instance, in a web application on the server, we need to open a socket connection to another server, and this fails sometimes with the following message: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted I looked up the error, which led me to this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa560610(v=bts.20).aspx, which indicates that it might be TCP/IP port exhaustion. When I perform netstat -n, I get tons of TIME_WAIT connections on port 80. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

NetApp and SQL Server?

Do you have any good or bad experiences to share running SQL Server OLTP Systems on NetApp appliances? I have been working with a small, relatively low-volume cluster with a lower-end NetApp device, and I have found the environment to be generally unstable, at least compared to my experiences with other SANs, iSCSI arrays, and DAS setups. I struggle to believe that RAID DP and WAFL are more than fairy-dust technologies. A solution has been proposed to me that I just need a bigger, better NetApp, with PAM cards and other cool technology I've not heard of, and I feel like I would be better off spending a quarter of that on good direct-attached drives and a beefy server. At the same time, I feel that an Enterprise-class SAN should be something I can count on to be consistently a more stable, better performer than the less expensive solution I might propose. Are you a SQL Server DBA in an OLTP environment and love your NetApp? If you don't like them, why not?
