Are there existing FOSS component-based frameworks?

The component based game programming paradigm is becoming much more popular. I was wondering, are there any projects out there that offer a reusable component framework? In any language, I guess I don't care about that. It's not for my own project, I'm just curious. Specifically I mean are there projects that include a base Entity class, a base Component class, and maybe some standard components? It would then be much easier starting a game if you didn't want to reinvent the wheel, or maybe you want a GraphicsComponent that does sprites with Direct3D, but you figure it's already been done a dozen times. A quick Googling turns up Rusher. Has anyone heard of this / does anyone use it? If there are no popular ones, then why not? Is it too difficult to make something like this reusable, and they need heavy customization? In my own implementation I found a lot of boilerplate that could be shoved into a framework.

I'm looking for your best "quick answer" technical interview questions. We are a 100% Microsoft shop and do the majority of our development on the ASP.NET web stack in C# and have a custom SOA framework also written in C#. We use a combination of Web Forms, MVC, Web Services, WCF, Entity Framework, SQL Server, TSQL, jQuery, LINQ, and TFS in a SCRUM environment. We are currently on .NET 3.5 with a very near transition to .NET 4.0. Our interviewing process includes a 55 minute interview with two technical people (usually an architect and a senior developer). The two interviewers have to share the time for questions. That isn't enough time for very many true programming problems so I'm looking for more good questions that have quick, yet meaningful, answers. We are mainly interviewing for Senior Dev positions right now but may interview for some Juniors in the future. Please help?

strtok wont accept: char *str

strtok wont work correctly when using char *str as the first parameter (not the delimiters string). does it have something to do with the area that allocates strings in that notation? JAX-RS 2.0 Early Draft - Third Edition Available

JAX-RS 2.0 Early Draft Third Edition is now available. This updated draft include new samples explaining the features and clarifications in content-negotiation, discovery of providers, client-side API, filters and entity interceptors and several other sections. Provide feedback to users@jax-rs-spec. Jersey 2.0, the Reference Implementation of JAX-RS 2.0, released their fourth milestone a few days ago as well. Several features have already been implemented there. Note, this is an early development preview and several parts of the API and implementation are still evolving. Feel like trying it out? Simply go to Maven Central (of course none of this is production quality at this point). The latest JAX-RS Javadocs and Jersey 2.0 API docs are good starting points to explore. Cookbook: SES and UCM setup

The purpose of this post is to guide you setting up the integration between UCM and SES. On my next post I’ll show different approaches to integrate WebCenter Portal, UCM and SES based on some common scenarios. Let’s get started. WebCenter Content Configuration WebCenter Content has a component that adds functionality to the content server to allow it to be searched via the Oracle SES. To enable the component installation, go to Administration -> Admin Server and select SESCrawlerExport. Click the update button and restart UCM_server1 managed server. Once the managed server is back, we’ll configure the component. In the menu, under Administration you should see SESCrawlerExport. Click on the link. You’ll see the window below. Click on Configure SESCrawlerExport. Configure the values below: Hostname: SES hostname. Feed Location: Directory where data feeds will be saved. Metadata List: List of metadata that will be searchable by SES. After updating the values click on the Update button. Come back to the SESCrawlerExport Administration UI and click on Take Snapshot button. It will create the data feeds in the specified Feed Location. To check if the correct configuration was done, please access the following URL http://<ucm_server>:<port>/cs/idcplg?IdcService=SES_CRAWLER_DOWLOAD_CONFIG&source=default. HTTP endpoint for authorization: http://<ucm_hostname>:<port>/cs/idcplg. Display URL prefix: http://<ucm_hostname>:<port>/cs. Administrator user: UCM Admin user. Administrator password. On the Document Types tab, add the documents that should be indexed by SES. As our last step, we’ll configure the Federation Trusted Entities under Global Settings. Entity Name: The user must be present in both the identity management server configured for your WebCenter application and the identity management server configured for Oracle SES. For instance, I used weblogic in my sample. Password: Entity user password.\ Now you are ready to test the integration on the SES UI: http://<ses hostname>:<port>/search/query/.

Question about component based design: handling objects interaction

I'm not sure how exactly objects do things to other objects in a component based design. Say I have an Obj class. I do: Obj obj; obj.add(new Position()); obj.add(new Physics()); How could I then have another object not only move the ball but have those physics applied. I'm not looking for implementation details but rather abstractly how objects communicate. In an entity based design, you might just have: obj1.emitForceOn(obj2,5.0,0.0,0.0); Any article or explanation to get a better grasp on a component driven design and how to do basic things would be really helpful.

Restore Emacs Session/Desktop

I've been searching for how to restore an emacs session, with no luck. I'm looking to restore all previously open buffers, some of which might contain erc, shells, directory listings, files, etc. Every time I open emacs, I spend a considerable amount of time arranging my buffers; splitting them into rows and columns, opening a shell, arranging irc channels. It takes a while to get onto work. I've tried adding the following to my init.el (desktop-save-mode 1) And then using M-x desktop-save. This only seems to restore files that are open, not shells or anything else running within buffers. I've also checked the following questions (sorry, not able to post links yet): Session management in emacs using Desktop library Emacs session / projects / window management Emacs: reopen buffers from last session on startup? And read through: DeskTop and EmacsSession at emacswiki.org/emacs/SessionManagement Here's a screenshot example of my emacs session. A simple answer would be to just focus on real work :P

Getting past Salesforce trigger governors

I'm trying to write an "after update" trigger that does a batch update on all child records of the record that has just been updated. This needs to be able to handle 15k+ child records at a time. Unfortunately, the limit appears to be 100, which is so far below my needs it's not even close to acceptable. I haven't tried splitting the records into batches of 100 each, since this will still put me at a cap of 10k updates per trigger execution. (Maybe I could just daisy-chain triggers together? ugh.) Does anyone know what series of hoops I can jump through to overcome yet another ridiculously short-sighted limitation by this awful development "platform"?

java get file paths

hey everybody, I have a jsp page which contains the code which prints all files in a given directory and their file paths. The code is if (dir.isDirectory()) { File[] dirs = dir.listFiles(); for (File f : dirs) { if (f.isDirectory() && !f.isHidden()) { File files[] = f.listFiles(); for (File d : files) { if (d.isFile() && !d.isHidden()) { System.out.println(d.getName()+ d.getParent() + (d.length()/1024)); } } } if (f.isFile() && !f.isHidden()) { System.out.println(f.getName()+ f.getParent() + (f.length()/1024)); } } } The problem is that it prints the complete file path, which when accessed from tomcat is invalid. For example, the code spits out the following path: /usr/local/tomcat/sites/web_tech/images/scores/blah.jpg and I want it to only print the path up to /images ie /images/scores/blah.jpg I know I could just mess around with an actual string, ie splitting it or string matching, but is there an easier way to do it? How to call another PHP script from a PHP script?

Hello, I have a PHP script that has a runtime of 34 seconds. But it dies after 30 seconds. I guess my webhost a time limit of 30 seconds. I am thinking of splitting the script into two parts say PHP-1 and PHP-2. Can I call PHP-2 from PHP-1 and kill PHP-1? Both scripts have to run in sequence, so calling both of them using cron is not possible. [ My host provides cron with interval 5 mins and does not allow to change the start time] -Will this circumvent the time limit set by host?

Level and Player objects - which should contain which?

I've been working on a several simple games, and I've always come to a decision point where I have to choose whether to have the Level object as an attribute of the Player class or the Player as an attribute of the Level class. I can see arguments for both: The Level should contain the player because it also contains every other entity. In fact it just makes sense this way: "John is in the room." It makes it a bit more difficult to move the player to a new level, however, because then each level has to pass its player object to an upcoming level. On the other hand, it makes programming sense to me to leave the player as the top-level object that is persistent between levels, and the environment changes because the player decides to change his level and location. It becomes very easy to change levels, because all I have to do is replace the level variable on the player. What's the most common practice here? Or better yet, is there a "right" way to architecture this relationship?

Correctly Applying an Open Source License

My question consists of multiple points that are inherently related, I apologize for that. I tried splitting it up a little more, but I would keep repeating myself. What exactly is required to apply an open source license to a code base that is my Intellectual Property? A lot of Open Source projects include a full copy of the license somewhere in a root directory but do also have some sort of file header including a license description, disclaimer and a copyright notice. Is that really necessary or does it depend on the license type? If someone else contributes changes to this file, does he need to be named in the copyright notice too?

C# method generic params parameter bug?

Hey, I appears to me as though there is a bug/inconsistency in the C# compiler. This works fine (first method gets called): public void SomeMethod(string message, object data); public void SomeMethod(string message, params object[] data); // .... SomeMethod("woohoo", item); Yet this causes "The call is ambiguous between the following methods" error: public void SomeMethod(string message, T data); public void SomeMethod(string message, params T[] data); // .... SomeMethod("woohoo", (T)item); I could just use the dump the first method entirely, but since this is a very performance sensitive library and the first method will be used about 75% of the time, I would rather not always wrap things in an array and instantiate an iterator to go over a foreach if there is only one item. Splitting into different named methods would be messy at best IMO. Thoughts?

How to perform efficient 2D picking in HTML5?

I'm currently using an R-Tree for both picking and collision testing. Each entity on screen has a bounding box for collisions and a separate one for picking. Since entities may change position very frequently, both trees must be updated/reordered once per frame. While this is very efficient for collisions, because the tree is used in hundreds of collision queries every frame, I'm finding it too costly for picking, because it only gets queried when the user clicks, thus leading to a lot of wasted tree updates. What would be a more efficient way to implement picking without as much overhead?

I am new to F# and I have this code: if s.Contains("-") then let x,y = match s.Split [|'-'|] with | [|a;b|] -> int a, int b | _ -> 0,0 Notice that we validate that there is a '-' in the string before we split the string, so the match is really unnecessary. Can I rewrite this with Options? I changed this code, it was originally this (but I was getting a warning): if s.Contains("-") then let [|a;b|] = s.Split [|'-'|] let x,y = int a, int b NOTE: I am splitting a range of numbers (range is expressed in a string) and then creating the integer values that represent the range's minimum and maximum.

View Frustum Alternative

I am working on a simulation project that requires me to have entities walking around in a 3D world. I have all that working, matrix transformations, etc. I'm at the point where I need what is essentially a view frustum, so I can give each entity a visible area. However, when looking over the calculations required to do it, it seems like a perspective frustum is only required to be able to project it onto a 2D screen. Is there another, easier to code solution, that would function better, such as an orthogonal perspective? Could I just define a shape mathematically and test wether the coordinates of the objects are inside or out? I am not really a 3D coder (and I am doing this all from scratch, not using an engine or anything), so I would like the simplest solution possible for my needs. Thank you!

I was give a problem to express any number as sum of 4 prime numbers. Conditions: Not allowed to use any kind of database. Maximum execution time : 3 seconds Numbers only till 100,000 If the splitting is NOT possible, then return -1 What i did : using the sieve of eratosthenes, i calculated all prime numbers till the specified number. looked up a concept called goldbach conjecture which expresses an even number as the summation of 2 primes. However, i am stuck beyond that. Can anyone help me on this one as to what approach u might take ? The sieve of eratosthenes is taking 2 seconds to count primes till 100,000 :(((

Allow for modular development while still running in same JVM?

Our current app runs in a single JVM. We are now splitting up the app into separate logical services where each service runs in its own JVM. The split is being done to allow a single service to be modified and deployed without impacting the entire system. This reduces the need to QA the entire system - just need to QA the interaction with the service being changed. For inter service communication we use a combination of REST, an MQ system bus, and database views. What I don't like about this: REST means we have to marshal data to/from XML DB views couple the systems together which defeats the whole concept of separate services MQ / system bus is added complexity There is inevitably some code duplication between services You have set up n JBoss server configurations, we have to do n number of deployments, n number of set up scripts, etc, etc. Is there a better way to structure an internal application to allow modular development and deployment while allowing the app to run in a single JVM (and achieving the associated benefits)?

it is a good approach to implement dependency injection in a desktop app?

Well, the thing is that I am just about to create a Desktop App (with .NET windows forms) And now I just wonder if it would be really a wise choise to use any IoC (StructureMap,Ninject,Spring .Net), I have used them before for Asp.Net web applications but what makes me doubt now is the fact that working with windows forms my business entities will persist when I navigate through tabs and unlike than web forms or mvc apps where it would be necesary to inject my business entity for every new request that is performed, I mean this because of the Asp.Net page life cycle where is performed the initialization and controls instantiation. Maybe I am misunderstanding the point of using an IoC, so please tell me what do you think would be a better choise?
