  Background I'm on a new VMWare install consisting of: 1 vCenter Server (containing inventory service, SSO, vCenter server, and web client server) 2 ESX Servers configured in a HA group Problem When a I view the summary for any one of my servers, I receive a notice: "" This is expected in our scenario and we're okay with it. Attempted Solutions As I understand from this article and this discussion, the proper way to remove the error message is to ignore it via setting the "das.ignoreRedundantNetWarning" propery to "true". I took the following steps: Logged into vCenter Right-clicked on my HA cluster and chose "Edit Settings..." Clicked "vSphere HA" section Clicked "Advanced Options..." Added the "das.ignoreRedundantNetWarning" option with a value of "true". Question How do I get this error to go away, and are there any reasons why adding this option may not have worked? • how can I effect DNS Caching on PHP/Memcache application

  In a very high loaded Ubuntu/PHP web server I found that the PHP line: $memcache-connect("int-aws_ec2.memcached.myapp.net",11211); sometimes takes ~5 secs. Replacing the url with the ip address decreases the server load from ~20 to 0 My question is - where are the settings that effect the DNS caching for this? Is it in the server level or the memcache library ? How can I change it ? Additional info: Ubuntu 10.04 lucid PHP: 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) Amazon EC2 Even more info per Celada's comment: The DNS handling for the memcache server is done by scalr (the platform I use to manage the cloud resources). They have a client located on the instances and their own DNS servers. /etc/nsswitch.conf - hosts: files dns /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 172.16.0.23 domain ec2.internal search ec2.internal The domain is not in hosts.conf To check if I run nscd I used /etc/init.d/nscd stop and received 'no such file' so i guess I dont run nscd. • Unable to mount portable hard drive on Ubuntu

  My portable hard drive (WD My Passport), which used to work correctly now does not automount on my Ubuntu system. It does work on a Windows machine or even when plugged into WD HD TV, which is a Linux based device. There's one NTFS partition spanning the whole drive. When I plug the disk in, I see the following in dmesg: [269259.504631] usb 1-2.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 20 [269259.604674] usb 1-2.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice However it does not mount in GNOME and I don't see it when I type: sudo fdisk -l Any suggestions why this might be? I repaired the partition using chkdsk on Windows, so the issue is probably not filesystem related.

  While running Ableton Live 8 after a project gets to a certain size, the audio starts to get a bit choppy and distorted. My levels are fine and is not the cause of the lag and chop. I have samples set to 1024 and the high quality button selected which I need to hear the sound. I always lower these when I'm recording audio with my mic but I need to have these turned up to be able to mix master the song. Anything I can do to lower the CPU usage? It sucks because I can't even use my iZotope Ozone plug-ins because of their CPU usage and they are AMAZING plug-ins that I would love to use.

• Why does a website server recieve local files much slower than recieve files on other websites?

  The server at http://any2djvu.djvuzone.org receives same files from local computers much slower than from links on other websites (with the same files have been uploaded to the other websites, such as dropbox.com). The speed of uploading a file from local computers to other websites such as dropbox is also much faster than to any2djvu website. For example, a pdf file of 17MB needs more than 1 min to be uploaded to any2djvu server from a local computer with normal ISP such as Comcast High-speed internet, but takes less than 3 seconds from a dropbox link to any2djvu server, and takes around 10 seconds from the same local computer to dropbox. I wonder why there is such big differences for the speeds of different uploading ways to a web server? Thanks!

  I have varnish installed and I think it's working properly (not sure if it matters but I am using iptables reroute method to route ports incoming:80 > varnish:8080 > apache:80 Anyway, In varnishstat I see a pretty high Hitrate average (60-80%) which I am working on but I am unclear at what all of the stats presented by varnishstat Specifically the following Backend stats: 380 0.00 0.26 Backend conn. success 10122 15.00 6.85 Backend conn. reuses 267 0.00 0.18 Backend conn. was closed 10391 15.00 7.04 Backend conn. recycles I've read a blog post called "Varnishstat for dummies" which outlines a lot of details of varnishstat (I recommend it for beginners) but it does not go over these Backend stats. Feel free to explain here or link to a resource I've missed :) thanks!

• Short USB cables not charging?

  I find this a strange problem but I can't find anything online about it. Recently I purchased a few short USB cables (20-30cm), to use in my car's USB connector to charge my phone. Strangely an older longer USB cable (1.2m), charges the phone fine (and the icon changes to show charging). With any of the short cables in the same USB slot no charging happens. Both the long and the short cables are USB2 compatible. I naturally assumed the short cables were faulty but connecting them to a PC or connecting to a high capacity external battery charging is successful using all the short cables and longer cables. Hopefully someone here is able to give me an explanation of the problem and how I can overcome this and use a short cable where it is most appropriate. Thanks

  Hi, I am looking for a software that allows me to enter my used backup media (e.g. DVD1, DVD2) my backed-up assets in high-level (such as "family-photos from 2003", "laptop drivers") details of the assets ("Ninas Birthday 2003") where the backup media is currently stored when the media has been burned (to re-burn in case of media degeneration) Of course it should be possible to navigate from media to assets and backwards. I also thought about marking assets as "deprecated". If all assets on a media are deprecated, the program should tell me so I don't have to keep it any more. Does anybody know a program with this feature-set or will I have to start my own in say Access?

• xinet vs iptables for port forwarding performance

  I have a requirement to run a Java based web server on port 80. The options are: Web proxy (apache, nginx etc.) xinet iptables setuid The baseline would be running the app using setuid but I'd prefer not to for security reasons. Apache is too slow and nginx doesn't support keep-alives so new connections are made for every proxied request. xinet is easy to set up but creates a new process for every request which I've seen cause problems in a high performance environment. The last option is port forwarding with iptables but I have no experience of how fast it is. Of course, the ideal solution would be to do this on a dedicated hardware firewall / load balancer but that's not an option at present.

This server is used almost exclusively for inbound connections. It hosts a web server (IIS 6), SQL server, and file server (via LAN UNC paths and mapped drives). How do I make best use of inbound bandwidth across both NICs? For example, if I connect to it by hostname and one of the interfaces has high traffic, I'd like the new connection to use the other interface.

  We have a decent-sized server estate: several ProLiants, plus IBM BladeCentre and SANs running a VMWare environment. Due to an imminent premises move, we're not going to have enough space for a server room, so I've been looking at moving everything out to a colo. My boss is more keen on the idea of cloud-hosting everything, which would include a couple of high-traffic websites (about 9m pageviews/month), our Exchange sever (about a million clean emails sent/received monthly), as well as file/print/AD/all the ususal stuff. This doesn;t sound like a good idea to me, but I'm new to the ways of the cloud. Can anyone offer any advice?

• XPP-32 over W7-64 on music production laptop

  I need to upgrade my laptop and need high performance for music production (recording and mixing). My audio interface manufacturer seems to be unable to successfully convert their drivers to 64-bit. I do not trust a virtual machine to handle real-time audio recording at low enough latency so ... I would like to install XP Pro 32-bit on a separate partition and dual boot since most of the machines that can handle this application now ship with Windows 7 64-bit flavors. I'd like to transit to 64-bit over time assuming M-Audio does eventually get a handle on 64-bit drivers, but really need to ensure that I can stay at 32-bit for now. Does anyone have any experience with this or something similar?

• How to install audio drivers for Acer Revo nettop?

  I have a Acer Revo nettop. I wiped the XP Home install that came on the machine and put XP Pro on. Acer's support website would lead you to believe that this product does not exist. I know it has a NVIDIA ION LE chipset so I headed over to nvidia.com to download drivers. Ive downloaded and installed the Chipset drivers, Graphics Drivers, and HDMI audio drivers. I have no sound. Under Device Manager there is an unknown Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus. I do not have an HDMI cable to test hdmi audio. I would just like the standard audio mini-jack output to work. Anyone know of the correct driver or a generic driver that would work? Thanks

  We are considering a change of email servers and Kerio Connect is attractive. However, I am concerned about calendaring functionality. I found an old forum post that states the question well: "We want to create a single public calendar that everyone can see - using Windows XP/Outlook 2003/KOC 6.4.1. We want a way for people to put an entry in their own personal calendar and some how mark it so the entry auto add's or syncs with the public one. If an entry is private it wouldn't sync to the shared public calendar... Has anyone ever heard of a way to do this - in any way with any software?" This is a high priority feature, so if Kerio cannot do this, we may consider Exchange. Does Exchange provide functionality like that described?

• serving static assets via http is really slow compared to sshfs (apache2/nginx)

  After migrating to a new VPS I had some users complaining about slow loading images on their sites. After creating some test files with dd I realized that I can download all files via sshfs with full speed while downloads via web are painfully slow. The larger the file is and the longer the transfer takes, the slower the transfer speed gets. I thought I had some problems with Apache and just spend the whole evening with replacing Apache2 against nginx for static file serving - with no effect at all. No I/O wait states in top. Tons of RAM free, no high CPU utilization and hdparm shows a decent I/O performance at all times. I just have no idea anymore, what's happening on this server.   We're working on setting up Oracle's Enterprise Single-Sign-On with High Availability. At the moment every component provides HA except our database backend (i.e. we have just one instance). While conducting some kick-the-plug tests we learnt that the ESSO system works even with the database turned OFF. This was a nice surprise but now we need to understand what are the implications of a database failure; sure the sessions might be handled on the application servers and the policies might have been cached but... for how long? how big is this cache? what is the role of the database? • NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s) on Ubuntu

  When copying large files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12-15MB/s on drives using the NTFS filesystem. I tested multiple drives (all connected using SATA) which all got writespeeds of 100MB/s+ on Windows or when formatted with ext4, so it's not an alignment or drive issue. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. AMD dual core processor (2.2 GHz) Kernel version: 3.5.0-23-generic Ubuntu 12.04 ntfs-3g version: both 2012.1.15AR.1 (Ubuntu default version) and 2013.1.13AR.2 How can I fix the writespeed?

• Mac Mini monitor on the move – can I use VNC or a portable monitor?

  I have been investigating the possibility of using my PC to control my soon to arrive Mac Mini when on the move. I can't afford and hope you don't give me answers suggesting buying a MacBook. My Mac Mini is the high end type. Now I have seen that the only viable option seems to be VNC. But how does this work if I am not on a network? Does VNC work with an ad-hoc network? Can a PC be connected to a Mac on such a network? Can this network be configured once at home and then be available on startup on the move? If I have an iPhone, can I use it as my wifi? But then, how would I start the Mac Mini to make the connection, since it wouldn't have a screen on the move? Finally, are there any small portable screens one can carry in a bag?

With this particular file I could just run ffmpeg -i infile.mp4 -c copy -map v -map :2 outfile.mp4 However this will not work if the audio streams are switched. How can I tell FFmpeg to use the 2 channel audio only?

I need to find a solution to perform some computations which require CPU and memory (disc IO is not used). The choice is to use: EC2 (High-CPU) or Xeon 5620/5630 with DDR3 or Core i7-960/980 with DDR3 Can anybody help, how to compare their performance? • Windows 7 offline files - work temporarily offline even if network connection works

  Sometimes I am connected via VPN to a network containing the server where files are stored which are cached by Windows offline files feature. Sometimes the connection works good and working this way is not a problem - on other times working is quite a pain because of high latency when working with the files in the Windows explorer. Is there an interactive way how a user (with admin permissions) can temporary suspend online usage of offline files? I already activated the "Transparent caching" group policy feature (Computer Configuration Policies Administrative Templates Networks Offline Files) with a network latency of 200msec but from my experience even if I get ping times to the file server of less than 40msec online usage is quite tenacious. Setting low latency times at this point causes the offline files often to toggle which makes problems with some applications working with several files and requires them to be consistent (like SVN client).

• Pinning Google Chrome's "Application Shortcuts" to the Windows 7 Taskbar

  I love the idea behind Google Chromes Application Shortcuts, but they don't integrate well for me into the Windows 7 taskbar. Ideally, I'd like to be able to have my most used webpages (gmail, calendar, etc) as separate windows, pinned to the Windows 7 taskbar. I've created some application shortcuts on my desktop, but I've come across the following problems. If I open my gmail application shortcut, and then later on open a normal chrome window the new window will also use the gmail icon in the taskbar, even if that window has nothing to do with gmail. (What's weirder, is that this new window then uses a high-res gmail icon, but my actually application shortcut window uses a low-res icon. If I pin the application shortcut to the taskbar, then the icon turns into the regular chrome icon. Any idea's how to fix these issues? Or are they bugs in google chrome? Chrome version: 4.0.249.89
