• When Your ASP.NET MVC Custom Error Doesn't Render...

  You've put [HandleError] on your controller and you've set <customErrors mode="On"> in the web.config file. So why do you still see the yellow screen of death? I've heard various wrong explanations for this phenomena, including "it only works under IIS" and "it only works in release mode". But the custom error view does work in debug mode and it does work with the Visual Studio WebDev web server.   I just changed jobs and will soon be in charge of a custom-built ASP.NET CMS and website for a fairly large corporation with global offices. I have IT and developer FTE resources available to me but I am trying to build a list of branding, project, and functionality points to review. What guides or lists can/should I use to evaluate this website before I begin adding features, creating new projects, or even redesigning and redeveloping the site? (I have been a webmaster/designer/developer for small, WordPress/Drupal sites for 10 years. I have been an unofficial webmaster (director/content manager) for a large site for 3 years (no direct development control over Sharepoint administration, IIS, or hosting ... but everything else, I did. • Using AWS or Azure, what to do about emails?

  I'm coming from a background of paying a hosting company X amount per month for a server. This server comes with IIS, WebsitePanel and Smartermail all bundled together. When I create a new domain using WebsitePanel it automatically creates my email account. All I then need to do is configure my DNS to point to the server. I've decided that it is more cost efficient to move to AWS / Azure. Has anyone come from a similar background and moved onto a cloud system? I'd be interested to know what you did regarding emails. So far, these are the suggestions I've seen: Use Google Apps for each domain Use something like Elastic Email to sent out emails Launch a new instance and host an email server on that The first option seems like quite a lot of manual configuration, the second one works good with outgoing emails but what about receiving? Option 3 would make it less cost effective. What is your experience?

  We have internal DNS servers where we've registered a FQDN that resolves internally to identityreg.domain.com. We also have an existing web page at https://iamserver.domain.com/product/default.asp?Workflow=process1. We need our users to be redirected to the existing web page URL whenever they type identityreg.domain.com. We're using IIS for the web server. I'm a newbie here so forgive any misuse of terms. How do I get the FQDN to redirect to the URL?

• Accessing network shares through ASP.Net

  In my impersonation enabled web site I needed to access files on a network share.  Running locally, everything worked fine. After deploying out to the dev server and hitting the web site from my PC, things fell apart. With impersonation enabled, we can access files on the server itself, but a network share is another story.  Accessing a share on another server, we encounter the infamous "double hop" situation, were the credentials have already been digested on the web server and are not available for the file server. We need to either expose the shared files to the identity IIS is running under, or create a new impersonation context.

  Hello, so I have this big method in my application for newsletter distribution. Method is for updating rayons and I need to assign a user to rayon. I have relation n:n through table colporteur_in_rayons which has attributes since_date and until_date.   When your SharePoint Solution package include third party or external dlls , you will often see your solution fail to deploy due to the locking of the dlls. Today I will show you how to find which process locks your dlls using Process Explorer. 1. Here is an example that your solution fails to deploy due to dll being locked. 2. Start the explorer by double click the procexp.exe 3. From the find tab click Find Handle or DLL 4.Type the your dll name and click Search 5. I can see all the processes that use my dlls at the moment, it looks like the iis , visual studio and SharePoint timer services might be the trouble. From my experience , it could be Visual studio. 6. Close visual studio and redeploy my solution, it works like charm. Re-search the dll, you can see Visual studio is not in the results.

  Hi, I creating a program which send newsletter with a background image. It works fine on Office 2000-2003, thunderbird, but the background image does not show on Outlook 2007. I read that Microsoft changed the rendering engine and did not support the background css property (it is possible but only applied to the Body). Is it achievable to create an email which will render like that : http://www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?a7905f7d16.png on Outlook 2007 ? What is the solution ? Thank you for your help.

  I need to know how to set up a local webDav server on my PC so that goodreader on ipad can automatically sync with it over the local wifi network? I am really a rookie when it comes to setting up a web server and have tried various guides on the internet. I tried setting up a webdav server using IIS and forwarded the required ports and enabled webdav publishing but goodreader can find it in the local wifi network automatically nor is it able to connect even after manually entering the credendtials. So i'll be really greateful if someone who has successfully setup a webdav server for use with goodreader can point me on how to do it?

• Ideas on limiting content to single printed page?

  I have 5-6 text areas that users fill out in a template (a couple of columns, basically a newsletter format). I'm needing to limit their content to one printed page, but I'm having a hard time coming up with practical solutions. The printed format (margin, font size, etc.) will be the same for all users, as it's printed from a central source. I've had a couple of ideas, but all of them seem rather unreliable and difficult to implement: Determine height of content using JavaScript and estimate the number of printed pages from that. The problem with this is that browser font sizes can vary, it's only a rough estimate (pixels to inches), etc. Limit the number of characters. This is problematic because there are various text fields, certain characters (like M) take up more space than others (like I), and line breaks obviously count for much more. What ideas do you all have? I appreciate your help!

  Using: ColdFusion 10, JQuery, IIS 7.5 I'm creating a system where people can submit their text articles to me and I can apply edits/corrections and send it back to them. However I don't want to lose their original work. I want them to see where I made edits. StackExchange pretty much does what I want by showing when a post was edited and then you can see the history of changes. Can anyone please suggest how to go about doing this? Everytime an edit is made, it has to be written to the database. But how do I show what was edited? It could be 1 word in a whole paragraph... how would I highlight this? I just need some pointers if possible at what to think about and what to use if anyone has the time to help me out.

• URL Rewriting from a subdomain to main domain!

  Hello. I am developing a pretty large website for a client, and its about 90% complete. It is currently hosted on a subdomain like so: now: v2.websitehere.com when complete: www.websitehere.com My problem is that SO much of this site is linked to the temporary subdomain. The newsletter service, multiple google apis, etc. I also have multiple blogs installed that would be hard to move over. Literally, I have over 20 blogs hosted on the subdomain. I also have other PHP scripts that utilize SQL databases. So, what I am getting at is that a migration would be very difficult: time consuming, frustrating, and not something I want to do. I am looking for a a good solution...similar to Wordpress's URL rewriting. Is there something I can do with .htaccess file? Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated.

• Why are IE6 and IE7 not completely showing this div?

  I'm having problems in IE6 and 7 with a div that doesn't complete the bottom padding that is attributed to it, so doesn't appear to finish the div down to the white content area like required.   Often when I'm building my MVC 2 application using Visual Studio 2010, I get the following error: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. On the internet, this error seems to be related to having a nested web.config in your application. I do have such a thing, but it's just the one that came out of the MVC 2 project item template...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • FTP client says directory permissions are 0000

  I encountered a problem that appears to be related to permissions (same as this one). When I looked at the permissions of various directories in FireFTP, they all were 0000, which is obviously nonsense, since all the other pages are served without any problems. I only have ftp access, and I think it’s a Windows server (The header says "Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5"). I’ve tried a different ftp client, with the same result. Changing the permissions results in a "'SITE CHMOD 764 [directory]': command not understood" error. A search on Google and SO for "permissions windows 0000" and similar queries didn’t turn up anything. How can I view and change the actual permissions?

Each email contains a link for editing your subscription: <%= edit_user_url(@user, :secret => @user.created_at.to_i) %> :secret = @user.created_at.to_i prevents users from editing each others profiles. def edit @user = user.find(params[:id]) if params[:secret] == @user.created_at.to_i render 'edit' else redirect_to root_path end end It doesn't work - you're always redirected to root_path. It works if I modify it like this: def edit @user = user.find(params[:id]) if params[:secret] == "1293894219" ... 1293894219 is the "created_at.to_i" for a particular user. Do you have any ideas why?
