• Show Ubuntu logo in Byobu (tmux) status bar?

  For some reason my Byobu (tmux) status bar is showing TAB instead of the ubuntu logo. This: where it should be this: I've tried installing some different fonts, but have not corrected the issue yet. Any ideas? Further information: sudo apt-get install ttf-ubuntu-font-family Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ttf-ubuntu-font-family is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Update: fc-list on my computer shows all the fonts with the prefix /usr/share/fonts/ e.g., /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/UbuntuMono-R.ttf: Ubuntu Mono:style=Regular But the same command on a working system shows fonts listed thus: Ubuntu Mono:style=Bold Italic Perhaps it's a font location problem?

Done E: Unable to locate package g++-4.7 E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'g++-4.7' But I find gcc was there with Ubuntu 14.04 installation itself. How could I install g++ in ubuntu 14.04 and any version of g++ abouve 4.7.2 is fine with me.

• Why is the superblock last mount time in the future?

  Future time: Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I regularly have to fun fsck and reset my clock because it shows a 'future time' : Err.Msg. "superblock last mount time is in the future by less than a day, probably due to hardware clock being incorrectly set." FIXED.   I want to check, inside a bash script (*), how much time the user of a X session has been idle The user himself does not have to be using bash, but just X. If the user just moved the mouse, for example, a good answer would be "idle for 0 seconds". If he has not touched the computer in 5 minutes, a good answer would be "idle for 300 seconds" The reason to not use xautolock straight away is to be able to implement some complex behavior. For example, if the user is idle for 10 minutes, try to suspend, if he is idle for more 5 minutes, shutoff (I know it sounds odd, but suspend does not always work here ...) (*)or could be another language.

• Multi Column Block Too Narrow in Chrome

  My Web site displays song lyrics in a multi-column format, using CSS3. Both Firefox & MSIE 10+ display the multi-column text perfectly, but Chrome does not. This sample page shows the problem: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/test/html5/html5-multicolumn-test.htm The page uses a media selector, so your Chrome window must be at least 1280 pixels wide to see the effect. In fact, if you make the Chrome window less than 1280 pixels, you'll see the lyrics block change to a single column, of the same overall width. In other words, when Chrome shifts to 1-column to 2-column mode (due to the wider browser window), the lyrics block remains the same width, causing text to be squeezed together. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or know a solution? Is this a Chrome bug, or I am I doing something wrong? I posted this question on a Chrome forum a while back, but got no reply.

• how to change dolphin's select region of a file/folder (in detail view mode)

  Since nautilus has removed the dual pane. So I turn to dolphin. I am wondering how to change the default select behavior in detail view mode? Now to select a file/folder, my cursor has to hover over that file/folder and then the left click will take effect, but I much prefer the nautilus way, that is as long as your cursor is in the same row of that file/folder, left click picks up that item. This I think is more robust for user selection, it is faster. Any ideas how to achieve this in dolphin?

• Not able to create Live CD

  I downloaded 12.04.1 on a Windows 7 machine. I burnt a DVD from the ISO image using Windows Disc Image Burner. I had 'verify disc' on. The disc was created successfully with no errors. I was not able to use this disc for installing Ubuntu on another Windows 7 machine. I do not get the Welcome Screen on booting. I find that on the disc I burnt, I do not find bin, disc tree, programs directories and cdromupgrade, start.*, ubuntu* files. I found the boot directory and WUBI executable file. I tried downloading several times with the same result. I had similar problem earlier with 11.04. Can you please let me where the problem is?

This logic is now built into SPRequestModule. The mobile view is pretty damned amazing. Even though the set of pages for mobile access is completely different, SharePoint has an entirely separate set of controls for the mobile pages. These are in the Microsoft.SharePoint.MobileControls namespace which inherit from Microsoft ASP.NET controls in the System.Web.UI.MobileControls namespace. • TFS Backup Plan Wizard Tool

  With the release of the “September – 2010” TFS 2010 Power Tools, came an addition to the Team Foundation Server Administration Console.  This addition is the Team Foundation Backups Tree item.  The tool is used to create backup plans and to work with it you run through a wizard, just like you would in configuring TFS or any of the extensions it has. The areas covered through the tool include: Backup to a Network Backup Path, retention configuration. Under Advanced Options, the extension to be used for the Full and Transactional backups. The capability to include external databases, meaning, include the reporting databases and SharePoint databases as part of the plan. There are further options as you can see, that includes being able to define a task scheduler account, be able to set alerts for notifications on execution of the plans, and last the option to configure the schedule for the plan execution.  All in all a very good tool and great way to safeguard the investment you’ve made.

• Is there any benefit to obsession with making code "look pretty"?

  Sometimes I spend ridiculous amounts of time (hours) agonizing over making code "look pretty". I mean making things look symmetrical. I will actually rapidly scroll through an entire class to see if anything jumps out as not looking "pretty" or "clean". Am I wasting my time? Is there any value in this kind of behavior? Sometimes the functionality or design of the code won't even change, I'll just re-structure it so it looks nicer. Am I just being totally OCD or is there some benefit hidden in this?

  I need to simulate the behavior of the keyboard shortcut (ALT+F4) using Terminal for a given application. If I open for example gedit and click ALT + F4 , then GEDIT will be xkilled. If I want to achieve same thing using Terminal, how should I proceed? • Color distortion with Intel HD4000 over HDMI output - VGA is fine

  I set up a new system with i5 3570k gigabyte z77 d3h using integrated graphics (HD4000) and I've installed the 64bit Desktop version of 12.04. Connected to my Acer Screen via HDMI, the colors are horribly distorted. I think the biggest issue is that black appears as greenish. Over VGA everything is fine. Interestingly, I once observed that connecting both, the VGA and the HDMI cable at the same time, solved the issue. Ubuntu thought 2 screens were connected, I mirrored the image, and over HDMI the colors looked fine. However, after a reboot I am now unable to reproduce this behavior. I read frequently, that Intel hardware should be supported out of the box by Ubuntu but it doesn't seem to be the case here. Should I upgrade my Kernel? If so, which version would you recommend? • Canon Pixma MP150 printer stops before the job is done

  I have a Canon Pixma MP150. It's old but it still works well. The problem is that since I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 the printer exhibits odd behavior. Usually right at the end of a job, it will stop. The printing is done, but the printer is still "working" and it won't release the paper. If I pull it out and test the printer, it will start over and print the same job. Once I just let it be and about an hour or so later it finished with no problems. My question is, could the be an issue with the printer (it is old) or is it the drivers in Ubuntu? Any advice (or suggestions on debugging) would be greatly appreciated as I print a lot and don't really want to buy a new printer.

• What Part of Your Project Should be in Source Code Control?

  A fellow developer has started work on a new Drupal project, and the sysadmin has suggested that they should only put the sites/default subdirectory in source control, because it "will make updates easily scriptable." Setting aside that somewhat dubious claim, it raises another question -- what files should be under source control? And is there a situation where some large chunk of files should be excluded? My opinion is that the entire tree for the project should be under control, and this would be true for a Drupal project, rails, or anything else. This seems like a no-brainer -- you clearly need versioning for your framework as much as you do for any custom code you write. That said, I would love to get other opinions on this. Are there any arguments for not having everything under control? Is this sysadmin a BOFH?

• How can I obtain in-game data from Warcraft 3 from an external process?

  I am implementing a behavior algorithm and would like to test it with my lovely Warcraft III game to watch how it will fight against real players. The problem I'm having is that I don't know how to obtain information about in-game state (units, structures, environment, etc.) from the running WC3 game. My algorithm needs access to the hard drive and possibly distributed computing, that's why JASS (WC3's editor language) isn't appropriate; I need to run my algorithm from a separate process. Direct3D hooking is an approach, but it wasn't done for WC3 yet and a significant drawback of that approach would be the inability to watch how the AI performs online, since it uses the viewport to issue commands. How I read in-game data from WC3 in a different process in a fastest and easiest way?

• Is there an apt command to download a deb file to the current directory?

  I am often interested in the installation triggers (postinst, postrm) or certain parts (/usr/share or /etc) of packages. Currently, I am running the next command to retrieve the source code: apt-get source [package-name] The downside is, this file is often much bigger than the binary package and does not reflect the installation tree. Right now, I am downloading the packages through http://packages.ubuntu.com/: Search for [package-name] Select the package Click on amd64/i386 for download Download the actual file This takes too long for me and as someone who really likes the shell, I would like to do something like the next (imaginary) command: apt-get get-deb-file [package-name] I could not find something like this in the apt-get manual page. The most close I found was the --download-only switch, but this puts the package in /var/cache/apt/archives (which requires root permissions) and not in the current directory.

  My aim is to have the janitor running at startup, with a pre-configured profile (e.g. clear redundant packages and browser cache). The website is lacking any documentation or usage instructions, and I could not find any information on this here as well. I tried, naturally, to start ubuntu-tweak from the command line, hoping additional API exists that will come through in this (allegedly) simple task. I only got as far as: ubuntu-tweak -f janitor which is a step in the right direction, but what's still missing is a command for the clear action. • To canvas, or not to canvas, when building browser-based games?

  Background: I have extensive development background, but the last time I coded a game was many years ago. My Javascript skills are quite limited, and I intend to improve them by building a simple game — Tetris, Pac-man, or something of that complexity level. Question: It seems to me that a fundamental choice I need to make is whether I should render on a <canvas> element or not. With a canvas, I have basic tools for rendering points, lines, and more complex things on top of that. Presumably there are, or will be, also various frameworks to help with this. Without a canvas, I could keep my objects in the DOM-tree, like a regular webpage, only quite complex, with many overlapping elements. Is one approach better than the other? Are they mutually exclusive? How do I know which to pick?

• Possible / How to render to multiple back buffers, using one as a shader resource when rendering to the other, and vice versa?

  I'm making a game in Direct3D10. For several of my rendering passes, I need to change the behavior of the pass depending on what is already rendered on the back buffer. (For example, I'd like to do some custom blending- when the destination color is dark, do one thing; when it is light, do another). It looks like I'll need to create multiple render targets and render back and forth between them. What's the best way to do this? Create my own render textures, use them, and then copy the final result into the back buffer. Create multiple back buffers, render between them, and then present the last one that was rendered to. Create one render texture, and one back buffer, render between them, and just ensure that the back buffer is the final target rendered to I'm not sure which of these is possible, and if there are any performance issues that aren't obvious. Clearly my preference would be to have 2 rather than 3 default render targets, if possible.

• Hide GRUB2 menu UNLESS you hold down Shift key: how to make this happen?

  I have a Ubuntu - Windows 7 dual-boot set-up, and I would like to have it that my laptop would boot up Windows 7 unless I press down the Shift key right after boot and bring up the Grub2 menu from which I can choose Ubuntu. I researched on Grub2 and options for etc/default/grub and I have tried playing around with combinations with the GRUB_TIMEOUT and GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT values, but to no avail. I tried setting the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT higher than the GRUB_TIMEOUT thinking that both countdown start simultaneously, but no - GRUB_TIMEOUT only starts after the other is done. Is this behavior achievable? If so, how?

I have developed 54 iOS/Android apps to date, but my core CS Skills apparently are rusty/bad. I have looked at TopCoder - but there aren't very many competitions going on, the website is terrible, and there does not appear to be anything that really supports Objective-C/iOS Websites?

• How to tell Wine that I have changed CD when mounting them virtually on a netbook with no CD drive?

  I have been trying to catch up with some of the old games from way back that are about right for my little Aspire One netbook through Wine. I've run into a problem Baldurs Gate, however, which is that I can't change CD. Obviously, I don't have a CD drive, so I have copied the CD content onto an external hard drive and I'm using a mount command with the loopback option to persuade the game that the CD is present. This allowed installation to work correctly and works fine to run it and to play the content from the first CD. However, when the game asks for CD2, I'm stuck. If I mount the CD2 ISO to the CD Rom path it doesn't appear to respond, whether or not I have first unmounted CD1. When I ask Wine to show me the CD drive it contains the right data, but it seems as though whatever signal would be interpreted by Windows to mean the CD drive has been closed isn't being sent. Does anyone know of a way to do this, or am I barking up the wrong tree and there is something else I need to do?

• Do you use ReSharper full time, or only enable it when needed?

  Based on a multitude of questions related to temporarily disabling ReSharper, and also on certain research data, I can see that a considerable share of ReSharper users have it disabled most of the time. They tend to enable it for a limited period of time (say, several hours), do whatever they need to do using its functionality, and disable it back until the next time they feel they need to use it. If you're using ReSharper (or other similar VS extensions, to that matter) in such occasional manner, can you clarify why you're doing this? Is your behavior based on performance, or other considerations? What kinds of tasks do you enable ReSharper for in this scenario?
