• Apollo linux boot into single user

  We have a device that runs Appolo Linux and I have to boot that device into a single user mode so that i can run a fsck to check the hard drive for errors. I've been goggling this during the past hour and so far I haven't found any specific method on how can I do that on this version on Linux. The device is known formerly as a NFX Cinxi One - now re-branded into BlackStratus LOG Storm. If any of you have any experience with this one you may know it is a device that is used to collect logs from other servers. I know that the above info isn't much but that is everything that I can provide up until now since tomorrow I have to follow up closely on this problem.

• Creating ip alias on bonded interface ie. bond0:1

  System: HP Proliant DL360 G5 running CentOS 5.4 Bonded interface is working fine for a long time. I just went to add an alias the way I always have on a regular interface, and on first check it works (pinging on the local box) but it is not accessable from outside (iptables is turned off). In addition with this setup the normal network response started to decline, hanging for around a minute before I could get a prompt on login. • How do I use different audio devices for different apps in Windows 8?

  Besides switching the default audio device, how can I send the audio from one app (say x-box music) to one audio device, and another (say the video app) to another audio device? • VirtualBox: Grub sees hard drive, Linux does not

  I installed Linux on my second hard drive. I can boot to it just fine. But when I try to boot it from a Windows 7 host using http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#rawdisk, grub sees it and can load vmlinuz and initramfs. Log: :: running early hook [udev] :: running hook [udev] :: Triggering uevents... :: running hook [plymouth] :: Loading plymouth...done. ... Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/{root UUID} ... ERROR: device 'UUID={root UUID}' not found. Skipping fsck. ERROR: Unable to find root device 'UUID={root UUID}' It then drops me into a recovery shell. I checked "/etc/fstab" and it's empty, there are also no sd* devices in dev, the only thing in /dev/disk/by-id is a VBox CD device. I'm not too good with these kinds of things so help would be greatly appriciated.

• How to duplicate a backup set from one media server to another

  I really honestly can't figure out how to do this. It's easy enough to open Backup Exec and tell it to duplicate the data on one local device onto another local device. What I cannot figure out how to do is make it duplicate data from one local device to a remote device. I can connect to the remote BE server, but then I can only access the remove devices. I can connect to the local BE server, but then I can only access the local devices. I can't figure out how the heck to get access to both local and remove devices simultaneously. Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows, in case it matters.

• How do I setup a proper VPN for my friends to play LAN games AND give them internet access?

  I'm trying to setup a VPN on my local network, but everyone who connects to me DOES have access to my laptop but not to the internet or other devices on the network. How can I properly configure my VPN on windows to work correctly (giving internet + access to all devices on my network to the remote pc)? Or is there software on windows which makes creating a VPN server easier? or maybe a VMWare image linux vpn server? I can't find any of those! My requirement is that my friends don't have to install additional software, they have to be able to connect with default windows stuff. My OS is Windows 8 Standart edition (not pro or enterprise) OEM. Most of my friends have also windows 8, some windows 7. Extra info: My device is DMZ'ed (Demilitarized Zone, [disabled NAT on my device so it's accessible on the WAN]) I can access files, websites and services on other devices on my network, and all devices can access file shares, website and all other services on my device When enabling VPN everything works except the client is unable to get internet access or access to any device on my network, client has only access to my device.

• Mouse Error Code 24. Windows 7

  I've had the same mouse for a while, and it's been working fine until one day, it started giving me a message about a device not working properly. I tried updating the drivers, and re-installing, I even deleted old drivers in case my computer should be a little confused. It never made a difference, and my mouse seemed to be working just fine despite getting the permanent error in my device manager, I looked it up several times online, but I never found anything I could actually use, when I go to official websites, I always get the same response "plug in so so into a different place - drivers - install silverlight before you can watch this tutorial, try it on a different machine". so I gave up on that. But now is where I have a real problem, lately, my little strange error evolved into a fullblown Error 24, and my mouse is starting to turn on and off randomely, especially when it is being used, but I do hear it go "badum..dadum" when I'm off doing something else. when I looked up error code 24, I really didn't find much other than it meaning: Code 24 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24) Cause The device is installed incorrectly. The problem could be a hardware failure, or a new driver might be needed. Devices stay in this state if they have been prepared for removal. After you remove the device, this error disappears. But, I have tried uninstalling the device entirely several times, and it'll go right back to its previous state with error 24, and turning on and off randomely. what do I do? I cannot afford taking it to a repair place, I can't really afford a new mouse either, I refuse to buy cheap ones as I am a gamer, in need of more than 3 buttons, and a good grip is important. Could there possibly be some confusion in the registry? I do remember having gotten some early problems after I converted my vista to windows7. But I hardly dare going in there unless I'm 100% certain of what I'm going for, and I can honestly say I am at a loss here. Edit: it is a USB mouse we're talking about here. • Portforwarding Combine Several Ports

  Hi I got a Raspberry Pi at A.A.A.B in my local network and I have set up a DMZ on my router so that any incoming traffic that comes to my router gets redirected to my raspberry pi wich I can connect via NO-IP adress. The problem is that I want to set up portforwarding since i got several services running on my Pi like SSH, torrent webgui, webalbum, etc. I had this already done before long time ago, but I forgot a bit the syntax and cant get to set it up. Router Help says: The Application allows you to do port forwarding, but only have the ports open when data flowing out of the trigger ports. When a program sends data out on outgoing ports called trigger ports, the device then allows incoming data on the open ports specified in your port triggering configuration. 1.Trigger Port Start Trigger Port Start Specify the start port on the device that would trigger the device to open ports for incoming data. 2.Trigger Port End Specify the end port on the device that would trigger the device to open ports for incoming data. You can enter a port number the same as the trigger port start or enter a larger port number to specify a port range. 3.Trigger Traffic Protocol Type Select the trigger traffic type. Open Port Specify all the ports to be opened. It's content could be: A single port only. A port range only. Start open port number and end port number should be separated by "-" . Combined several single port and several port ranges. Each single port or port range should be separated by "," . Open Traffic Protocol Type Select the open traffic type. • Upgrade of Ubuntu 8.10 distribution fails due to missing packages

  I have a server that I've forgotten to upgrade for ages, which is still running Intrepid (8.10). I'd like to upgrade it to a newer version of the distribution, so that I can get security patches etc. I found some instructions that tell me to install the package update-manager-core. I tried the following: $ sudo apt-get install update-manager-core but this fails since some of the necessary packages can't be found: ... • How to "eject" non-existing USB drive from Windows 7 host?

  I use a USB key which is encrypted with BitLocker to store various data. I keep that key with me all the time. What happens all the time is that I send my home computer to hibernate without ejecting the USB key first. Then I unplug the key and take it with me to work. When I get home, I resume my Windows session and even though the key is not plugged in, the drive still appears as mounted on the system. I can also unmount the non-existing device with mountvol, but that only removes the drive letter. Windows will still think the device is plugged in. When I plug the key in, nothing happens. The device's class ID is listed in mountvol output, but the device is not listed in the Disk Management panel.

  Is there a device, that works without a driver, you just connect it as usb, and receive any signal sent to it as if it were COM Port wired connection? For example, such a device that gets data sent to it by Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth and resends it to the USB. Of course it has to be set up once (network name, password etc) and for this purpose you need a driver, but once it is set up, you can use it at any computer without a driver. I have a Bluetooth USB, but I think it can't work without a driver. By just connecting it to any computer you can't find it in device list on another bluetooth device (as phone, etc).

• When using software RAID and LVM on Linux, which IO scheduler and readahead settings are honored?

  In the case of multiple layers (physical drives - md - dm - lvm), how do the schedulers, readahead settings, and other disk settings interact? Imagine you have several disks (/dev/sda - /dev/sdd) all part of a software RAID device (/dev/md0) created with mdadm. Each device (including physical disks and /dev/md0) has its own setting for IO scheduler (changed like so) and readahead (changed using blockdev). When you throw in things like dm (crypto) and LVM you add even more layers with their own settings. For example, if the physical device has a read ahead of 128 blocks and the RAID has a readahead of 64 blocks, which is honored when I do a read from /dev/md0? Does the md driver attempt a 64 block read which the physical device driver then translates to a read of 128 blocks? Or does the RAID readahead "pass-through" to the underlying device, resulting in a 64 block read? The same kind of question holds for schedulers? Do I have to worry about multiple layers of IO schedulers and how they interact, or does the /dev/md0 effectively override underlying schedulers? • Very high CPU and low RAM usage - is it possible to place some of swap some of the CPU usage to the RAM (with CloudLinux LVE Manager installed)?

  I had to install CloudLinux so that I could somewhat controle the CPU ussage and more importantly the Concurrent-Connections the Websites use. But as you can see the Server load is way to high and thats why some sites take up to 10 sec. to load! Server load 22.46 (8 CPUs) (!) Memory Used 36.32% (2,959,188 of 8,146,632) (ok) Swap Used 0.01% (132 of 2,104,504) (ok) Server: 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31230 @ 3.20GHz Memory: 8143680k/9437184k available (2621k kernel code, 234872k reserved, 1403k data, 244k init) Linux Yesterday: Total of 214,514 Page-views (Awstat) Now my question: Can I shift some of the CPU usage to the RAM? • Fixed or consistent mount location for a USB hard drive

  I store my music on an external hard drive, and play them with foobar2k. However, the drive letter changes, which usually means I need to rebuild a fairly large playlist every so often. I'm wondering if there's a way to reserve a drive letter for a specific external device (or type of device) by device ID or volume name, or if I'm better off using a NTFS mount point, and re-mounting the drive to a folder each time. I'm using either a Windows XP or 7 system, and the external drive is NTFS.

• Which scripting language to use to asynchronously ssh into equipment, run several commands, parse the output, and save to a file on my computer?

  There are several points I'd like to stress in my question. I'd like to login by asynchronously ssh'ing into our infrastructure equipment. Meaning, I do not want to connect to only one device, do all the tasks I need, disconnect, then connect to the next device. I want to connect to several devices at once in order to make the process as fast as possible. By equipment I mean 'infrastructure equipment' and not servers. I say this because I will not have the luxury of saving files to the device then transferring them to myself with scp or another method. The output of the scripts that are run will have to be saved directly to my computer. The output of the commands that are run will need to be cleaned up and parsed. Also I want the outputs of each device to be combined into one nice and neat file, not a separate file for each device. This will all be done from a linux box, using ssh, into devices that all use linux'ish proprietary OSes. My guess is the answer to my question will either be a Bash, Perl, or Python script but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask and to hear the reasons why one way is better than another. Thanks everyone. • Hard drive restore on reboot on windows embedded

  My company has an old out of service device with windows embedded on it that we want to re purpose. Any changes to the drive (SD Card with 2 partitions), (ie: installed software, ip address, system settings, files) are reset/deleted when we reboot the device. We can successfully make changes to the drive by plugging it into a PC, but that has its limitations and we would like to be able to use our device. Can anyone tell us more about the technology used for doing this and how/if we can disable it?

• Asus F5N laptop built-in card reader driver problem

  I have an Asus F5N X50N-AP011C. I have manually installed Windows 7 x64 on it, replacing the original Windows Vista. It also automatically installed a card reader driver, but it can no longer read xD cards. The driver shows in the device manager as "Generic- xD/SDMMC/MS/Pro USB device" (under "drives" - and a drive is also shown in Windows Explorer). The same card reader once used to work with xD cards. I also tried to manually install drivers from this website: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/realtek.htm - the RTS 5158 but it didn't work (it shows as USB device in device manager, but not as a drive in Windows Explorer). Does anyone know what card reader my model has built-in? (I think it's the 5158 but I don't know how to verify that - there's also no hint in the System Information tool, only the driver name is listed under "drives") how it is connected internally? if there is a better Windows 7 x64 driver?

• 3G USB Modem Not Working in 12.04

  When I connect my 3G USB Modem to my laptop with 12.04, nothing shows up in Network-Manager. This modem is working in 11.10 and the modem is shown in Network-Manager but not in 12.04 !! • Windows Phone 7 ActiveSync error 86000C09 (My First Post!)

  Hello fellow geeks! I'm kicking off this new blog with an issue that was a real nuisance, but was relatively easy to fix. During a recent Exchange 2003 to 2010 migration, one of the users was getting an error on his Windows Phone 7 device. The error code that popped up on the phone on every sync attempt was 86000C09 We tested the following: Different user on the same device: WORKED Problem user on a different device: FAILED   Seemed to point (conclusively) at the user's account as the crux of the issue. This error can come up if a user has too many devices syncing, but he had no other phones. We verified that using the following command: Get-ActiveSyncDeviceStatistics -Identity USERID Turns out, it was the old familiar inheritable permissions issue in Active Directory. :-/ This user was not an admin, nor had he ever been one. HOWEVER, his account was cloned from an ex-admin user, so the unchecked box stayed unchecked. We checked the box and voila, data started flowing to his device(s). Here's a refresher on enabling Inheritable permissions: Open ADUC, and enable Advanced Features: Then open properties and go to the Security tab for the user in question: Click on Advanced, and the following screen should pop up: Verify that "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" is *checked*.   You will notice that for certain users, this box keeps getting unchecked. This is normal behavior due to the inbuilt security of Active Directory. People that are in the following groups will have this flag altered by AD: Account Operators Administrators Backup Operators Domain Admins Domain Controllers Enterprise Admins Print Operators Read-Only Domain Controllers Replicator Schema Admins Server Operators Once the box is cheked, permissions will flow and the user will be set correctly. Even if the box is unchecked, they will function normally as they now has the proper permissions configured. You need to perform this same excercise when enabling users for Lync, but that's another blog. :-)   -Chris
