  Regarding the black art of managing memory on iPhone OS devices: what do the different levels of memory warning mean. Level 1? Level 2? Does the dial go to 11? Context: After an extensive memory stress testing period - including running my iPad app with the iPod music player app playing, I am inclined to ignore the random yet infrequent memory warnings I am receiving. My app never crashes. Ever. My app is leak free. And, well, the mems warnings just don't seem to matter. Thanks, Doug

  Hello, I want to set a key in emacs to perform a shell command on the file in the buffer, and revert the buffer without prompting. The shell command is: p4 edit 'currentfilename.ext' (global-set-key [\C-E] (funcall 'revert-buffer 1 1 1)) ;; my attempt above to call revert-buffer with a non-nil ;; argument (ignoring the shell command for now) -- get an init error: ;; Error in init file: error: "Buffer does not seem to be associated with any file" Completely new to elisp.   I have List<Attributes> la = new List<Attributes>(); la = (from t in result let t1 = t.AttributeCollection from t2 in t1 where t2.AttributeCode.Equals(attributeType) let t3 = t2.TimeSeriesData from k in t3.ToList() where k.Key.Equals(startDate) && k.Key.Equals(endDate) select new { AttributeCode = attributeType, TimeSeriesData = fn(k.Key, k.Value.ToString()) }).ToList<Attributes>(); I am getting the error: 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable<AnonymousType#1>' does not contain a definition for 'ToList' and the best extension method overload 'System.Linq.Enumerable.ToList<TSource>(System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable<TSource>)' has some invalid arguments I understood tye error meaning but how to type cast it. I have used var and then iterating over it got the result. But without that any other way by which I can do it? Using C# 3.0 Thanks

  I'm following the instructions at: http://agilewebdevelopment.com/plugins/acts_as_taggable_on_steroids to add the tag cloud to my view: in the controller: class PostController < ApplicationController def tag_cloud @tags = Post.tag_counts end end I also added the tag_cloud method as a helper method in the controller and in the view: <% tag_cloud @tags, %w(css1 css2 css3 css4) do |tag, css_class| %> (line 1) <%= link_to tag.name, { :action => :tag, :id => tag.name }, :class => css_class %> (line2) <% end %> (line 3) However: 1) if I don't add the helper_method :tag_cloud in the controller I get a undefined method error for tag_cloud 2) if I do add the helper method I get: wrong number of arguments (2 for 0) on the same line 1 of my sample code above. Suggestions?

• Google Chrome "window.open" workaround?

  Hi Folks! I have been working on a web app and for part of it I need to open a new window. I have this working on all browsers, my sticking point is with Google Chrome. Chrome seems to ignore the window features which is causing me issues, the thing I'm struggling with is I need the address bar to be editable within the new window. FF, IE, Safari and Opera do this fine, Chrome does not.   I am in the midst of converting a VB library to C#. One of my methods has the following signature in VB: Private Shared Sub FillOrder(ByVal row As DataRowView, ByRef o As Order) In C# I converted it to: private static void FillOrder(DataRowView row, ref Order o) From my constructor inside my Order class, I am calling the FillOrder() method like so: DataView dv = //[get the data] if (dv.Count > 0) { FillOrder(dv[0], this); } In VB, this works: Dim dv As DataView = '[get data]' If dv.Count > 0 Then FillOrder(dv.Item(0), Me) End If However, in VS10 in the C# file I am getting a red squiggle under this call with the following error: The best overloaded method match for [the method] has some invalid arguments This was working code in VB. What am I doing wrong?

• How to convince a colleague that code duplication is bad?

  A colleague of mine was implementing a new feature in a project we work on together and he did it by taking a file containing the implementation of a similar feature from the same project, creating a copy of it renaming all the global declarations and slightly modifying the implementation. So we ended up with two large files that are almost identical apart from renaming. I tried to explain that it makes our project more difficult to maintain but he doesn't want to change anything saying that it is easier for him to program in such way and that there is no reason to fix the code if it "ain't broke". How can I convince him that such code duplication is a bad thing? It is related to this questions, but I am more interested in the answers targeted to a technical person (another programmer), for example a reference to an authoritative source like a book would be great. I have already tried simple arguments and haven't succeeded.

• Interpreting Accept Headers as intended in IE and Webkit

  I developed a web app that responds with data in the format as specified by the client in the HTTP Accept Headers. Everything worked fine while using Firefox, but when I wanted to check my CSS / HTML on Chrome and IE, both of them wanted to download the index page, as if it's an unknown content type. After some research I found this article, which states that IE sends out a lot of crud in it's HTTP Accept headers, amongst others a list of image/* content types right at the start. This caused my web app to try to send the index page as an image/jpeg. So how do I know when to ignore and when to use the Accept Headers?

  I'm currently learning python and trying to do exercises at pyschools (if anyone knows what it is). Anyway, i have an exercise that asks me to do the following : Write a function percent(value, total) that takes in two numbers as arguments, and returns the percentage value as an integer. Here's my code: def percent(value, total): percent = value / total * 100 return int(percent) It works great in my Python Idle and it gives all the correct answers. however, when i run it in the pyschools website, it says that , for example , when the function is called with parameters 46 and 90 , the function returns 0. However, in my python idle , it correctly returns 51. What might be the problem ? Thank you very much for your help!

• How can I tell xCode to recheck project resources that have been modified?

  I'm working with a designer friend on an iPhone app and he likes to refine all sorts of images relating to the project we're working on. All these images have been added to the project previously (and added to the project folder by xcode) and then are modified in their new location. When I preview the images in xCode, the updated images show up but building and running in the simulator or on a device doesn't pick up the new image. In fact, if I do a clean build it seems to ignore the image all together and blank spaces appear where images should be. Now, I can delete these files from the project and re-add them and everything works peachy again. But there are a lot of them and I'd rather not do that every time an image is updated. Is there a way to get xCode to review and "learn" about these modified images? Is there a good reason for why it's not doing that automatically?

  I've got this program in MIPS assembly which comes from a C code that does the simple average of the eigth arguments of the function. average8: addu $4,$4,$5 addu $4,$4,$6 addu $4,$4,$7 lw $2,16($sp) #nop addu $4,$4,$2 lw $2,20($sp) #nop addu $4,$4,$2 lw $2,24($sp) #nop addu $4,$4,$2 lw $2,28($sp) #nop addu $2,$4,$2 bgez $2,$L2 addu $2,$2,7 $L2: sra $2,$2,3 j $31 When the number is positve, we directly divided by 8 (shift by 3 bits), but when the number is negative, we first addu 7 then do the division. My question is why do we add 7 to $2 when $2 is not >= 0 ? EDIT : Here is the C code : int average8(int x1, int x2, int x3, int x4, int x5, int x6, int x7, int x8) { return (x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5 + x6 + x7 + x8) / 8; } note : the possible loss in the division since we are using ints instead of floats or doubles is not important in this case.

DDEESSCCRRIIPPTTIIOONN List information about the FILEs (the current directory by default). Sort entries alphabetically if none of --ccffttuuvvSSUUXX nor ----ssoorrtt. Mandatory arguments to long options are mandatory for short options For some mysterious reason capital letters get duplicated. Can anyone explain what's going on?

  I would like to create a RegEx to match only english alphanumeric characters but ignore (or discard) isolated numbers in Ruby (and if possible in JS too). Examples: 1) I would like the following to be matched: 4chan 9gag test91323432 asf5asdfaf35edfdfad afafaffe But not: 92342424 343424 34432 and so on.. The above is exactly what I would want. 2) However, I would be really thankful if someone could also include French letters like: é ë ê (These are just few examples of many) 1) is my priority, it's totally okay if 2) is impossible or difficult to implement.   In Javascript I can call any method with more than the necessary amount of parameters and the extra parameters are silently ignored. e.g. letters = ['a','b','c'] //correct letters.indexOf('a') //This also works without error or warning letters.indexOf('a', "blah", "ignore me", 38) Are there ways to detect cases where this occurs? My motivation is that in my experience cases where this occurs are usually bugs. Identification of these by code analysis or at runtime would help track these errors down. These cases are especially prevalent where people are expecting alterations to base types which may not have occurred. Logging a warning where this happens e.g. Date.parse('02--12--2012', 'dd--MM--YYYY') Notes: To be clear I would like a solution that doesn't involve me sprinkling checks all over my code and other peoples' code.

• Escaping quotes twice in PHP

  Hello, I have a complicated form where I first have to take some _GET parameters and obviously I have to do a mysql_real_escape_string() on them since I look stuff up in the database with them. Them problem for me is after the initial db lookup. When the user submits a form, I send them along as a _POST request and obviously have to do this mysql_real_escape_string call again just in case someone tries to hack my site with a faked form submission. Then the problem I have is the arguments are escaped twice and my queries begin to look strange like this: select field1 , field2 , from my_table where some_id = \'.$lookup_id.\' ... So the system seems to be adding \' and it is messing me up :) Also, in my other forms I have not seen such behavior. Any ideas on what may be causing this? One weird thing is that I tried to send unescaped parameters to the post, and the same problem happens. That is a clue, but not a sufficient one for me. :( Thanks, Alex

However, javascript files are not being rendered properly in the browser; I'm getting a 404 Not Found when I try to load the file in the browser.   I've got an agent that takes in states and returns actions, while keeping an internal representation of the utility of state/action pairs. I've also got an environment that takes in actions and returns state/reward pairs. I need to be able to set the agent up with a start state and then continuously go from agent -(action)- environment -(state, reward)- agent -(action)-... However, the internal states (which need to be updated every iteration) need to stay private (that is, within the agent or the environment). This means that I can't simply call environment as a function within the agent using state and action as arguments. I'm somewhat of a Haskell noobie, so I'm not even sure if this is possible.

  When launching a process with CreateProcessW(), is it possible to have the process created with a different MBCP locale/codepage then the one that is configured as the system-wide default code page? In the target process, this should have the same effect as calling _setmbcp(). The target process is not a unicode-enabled and uses a plain main(int argc, char **argv) entry point. I would like to be able to select the code page to which unicode arguments passed to CreateProcessW() are converted to be different from the system's default codepage for non-unicode programs.

  It is possible to add and remove elements from an enum in Java at runtime? For example, could I read in the labels and constructor arguments of an enum from a file? @saua, it's just a question of whether it can be done out of interest really. I was hoping there'd be some neat way of altering the running bytecode, maybe using BCEL or something. I've also followed up with this question because I realised I wasn't totally sure when an enum should be used. I'm pretty convinced that the right answer would be to use a collection that ensured uniqueness instead of an enum if I want to be able to alter the contents safely at runtime.

  Hello everyone :) I've heard in several places that it's bad to have code that is too wide onscreen. For example: for (std::vector<EnumServiceInformation>::const_iterator currentService = services.begin(); currentService != services.end(); currentService++) However, I've heard many arguments for 80 character wide limits. I'm assuming this 80 character limit comes from the traditional command prompt, which is typically 80 characters wide. However -- most of us are working on something much better than a typical command prompt, and I feel that using an 80 character limit encourages use of variable names that are far too short and do not describe what the variable is used for. What is a reasonable limit for a new project with no existing coding width standard?
