  • Journaled filesystems and power failure

    - by Yoga
I heard that even a journaled filesystems such as EXT3/EXT4 might corrupted during power failure, e.g. from wikipedia [1]: In the event of a system crash or power failure, such file systems are quicker to bring back online and less likely to become corrupted. Can anyone provide more detail by giving examples such that when corruption can occur corruption is avoided by journaled filesystems [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journaling_file_system

  • Is there a way to specify minimum minibuffer/echo area size in emacs?

    - by Trevor Alexander
I am running Emacs 24, and due to a separate issue, my input method displays input candidates in the minibuffer regardless of how I set its options. That would not be such a problem if the minibuffer did not resize from height 2 (when displaying candidates) to height 1 (when not), repeatedly, as I scroll through candidates--it's really jarring. I looked through the documentation online and searched the configuration pages, but I couldn't find a setting for this. Is it possible?

  • Which tool do you use for your to-do list?

    - by howitzer
I've been constantly switching tools that keep track of my to-do list: Online account in SimpleGTD To-do applet in my RSS aggregator Outlook's builtin Task List My cellphone's built-in to-do list Post-it notes on my monitors at home and at work Paper list in my wallet (thought about enhancing it and adding a pen like Jeff Atwood did) Which proved most useful for you?

  • Lost Powerpoint document somewhere between Explorer and C drive

    - by Sarah Frank
Opened (and not saving) a Powerpoint presentation attached to an online email message. Modified the document and clicked on the Save (not Save As) and now the presentation is nowhere to be found. How do I find this document? I have run a serious search on the C drive to no avail. It's not even in the Temporary Internet Files. Computer system Windows XP Professional version 5.1.2600 Explorer version 6.0.2900

  • Can anyone recommend a decent tool for optimizing images other than Photoshop

    - by toomanyairmiles
Can anyone recommend a decent tool for optimising images other than adobe photoshop, the gimp etc? I'm looking to optimise images for the web preferably online and free. Basically I have a client who can't install additional software on their work PC but needs to optimise photographs and other images for their website and is presently uploading 1 or 2 Mb files. On a personal level I'm interested to see what other people are using...

  • Intel RST accidentally selected wrong drive as system drive -- how to fix?

    - by Sean Killeen
Question / TL;DR If Intel RST has marked a drive other than my RAID set as the system drive, how can I get it so that the RAID set is now seen as the system drive, and catch it up to my drive now? What Happened NOTE: Some perhaps unwise decisions are ahead. This is as best as I can recall the order of things. I had a 2x1TB RAID1 config. I bought the drives around the same time, and they started to die around the same time. I replaced 1st drive with a 2 TB drive before the other one's SMART errors got more serious. I waited for the RAID to replicate, then replaced the 2nd drive with a manufacturer's replacement. I got a second manufacturer's drive replacement and used it as a spare. so I now I had a 1TB/2TB drive in a RAID1 and another 1TB as a spare. The 1TB drive in the replacement set was bad from the manufacturer. Rather than mess with their refurbished stuff, I bought another 2 TB drive an upped the config to a 2x2TB RAID1 with the other, functioning manufacturer's drive as a spare. I made the mistake of trying to bring the other drive online to clean it out and the signatue clash killed my machine. When the machine rebooted, that drive was marked as the system drive. So, I have a 2x2TB RAID1 that is apparently offline, and 1 spare 1 TB refurbished drive that everything is being run from. Not a great idea. Options I'm considering Bring the 2x2TB drive back online, and then unplug the spare until I can format it in another system. This would involve some data loss, but the more I think about it, I actually think I haven't modified any data that isn't backed up or synced somewhere (go me!) Anything that isn't is likely trivial, enough that I'm willing to take the risk. One downside here is that if the 2 TB doesn't have data on it for some reason, I could be screwed trying to put the other drive back in, no? Try to somehow get the RAID1 updated with the data from the current system drive. Option 3?

  • Possible to capture and re-broadcast as RTMP?

    - by Jeremy White
I may have a need coming up soon to capture a live video broadcast stream and re-broadcast it as an RTMP stream for playback in Flash Player. Is this possible? I'm seeing posts online from 2005 to 2009 claiming that RTMP either isn't or is poorly supported in VLC. I do not currently know what format the incoming video stream will be -- will update when I get that information.

  • Comcast SMC Port Forwarding Issue

    - by Zach Fedora
I have a Comcast SMCD3G modem/router and I've been having issues getting the port to forward - When I check an online "open-port-checker" it says the port is forwarded/they can see the port on my IP. (1 Static IP is assigned to the modem) But when I try to access port 80 for example on a browser, it times out. Also when I try to remote desktop to the server (Windows Server 2008 R2) it doesn't work, yet canyouseeme.org says it is open. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

  • Rack layout tools

    - by Luke
I'm wondering if there's any tools (preferably offline) that would allow me to layout all of the new equipment that will be going into several standard racks. Currently I'm using Excel to map out all of the slots columns for the data but I suspect that there is some better method of doing this. Suggestions? Edit: Dell has an online tool, but doesn't seem very good at actually saving the data that you're working on (and obviously it's geared towards Dell hardware).

  • what is ranlib?

    - by Ying
I have been using a MacOSX system for a while, but just only recently started poking into the guts. I found a guide telling me to run 'sudo ranlib /usr/local/lib/libjpeg.a'(installing libjpeg). I have read the ranlib manual, and tried looking online on it. I simply don't understand. What resources do I need to look up to learn more, or can someone give a concise explanation on its use? Thanks in advance!

  • Motion - takes snapshot without motion detected

    - by Emmanuel Brunet
I've been installed the standard motion 3.2.12 package on debian 7.5. I would like to get snapshot ONLY when motion is detected, but it still saves a picture every second without any activity in front of the camera. I'm using a TENVIS JPT3815W IP camera motion.conf here is my configuration file setup_mode off target_dir /media/videos/log/webcam netcam_url http://webcam/snapshot.cgi netcam_tolerant_check on netcam_userpass admin:alpha1237 # Output frames at 1 fps when no motion is detected and increase to the # rate given by webcam_maxrate when motion is detected (default: off) webcam_motion off output_all off # detection settings 1-255 default 32 noise_level 50 # Maximum framerate for webcam streams (default: 1) webcam_maxrate 25 pre_capture 0 framerate 25 gap 30 locate on mail technical@live.fr text_right "FRONT CAMERA %Y/%m/%d - %T" text_double on ffmpeg_cap_new on ffmpeg_cap_motion on ffmpeg_video_codec mpeg4 output_motion off snapshot_interval 0 # Quality of the jpeg (in percent) images produced (default: 50) quality 90 # Restrict webcam connections to localhost only (default: on) webcam_localhost off # Limits the number of images per connection (default: 0 = unlimited) # Number can be defined by multiplying actual webcam rate by desired number of seconds # Actual webcam rate is the smallest of the numbers framerate and webcam_maxrate webcam_limit 0 Issue when I start motion images are stored in /media/videos/log/webcam nearly every second. I hjust want to get images when a motion is detected and the according video clip Any idea where the configuration fails ?

  • Converting SVG to UFO files

    - by Supuhstar
I am working in PhotoImpact X3, whose native file format is .UFO. I want to bring an SVG file into it, but it doesn't recognize SVG format. All online converters I find (trying to convert it to .PSD, which PhotoImpact X3 recognizes) convert the SVG to a raster format, first, and I don't want that. Does anyone know a way to import an SVG file into PhotoImpact X3? Preferably as a .UFO or .PSD file, but any scaleable vector file format will work.

  • Printing PDF books

    - by Robert Munteanu
I've been taking up reading some of Sonatype's Maven books, available online, but I find it more relaxing to read on paper rather than on screen. Still, loose A4 sheets do not bring me close enough to a book reading experience. Aside from ordering a print copy, what can I do to print/bind a PDF to be as close as possible to an actual book?
