• Javascript string replace with calculations

  Is there a way to resolve mathematical expressions in strings in javascript? For example, suppose I want to produce the string "Tom has 2 apples, Lucy has 3 apples. Together they have 5 apples" but I want to be able to substitute in the variables. I can do this with a string replacement: string = "Tom has X apples, Lucy has Y apples. Together they have Z apples"; string2 = string.replace(/X/, '2').replace(/Y/, '3').replace(/Z/, '5'); However, it would be better if, instead of having a variable Z, I could use X+Y. Now, I could also do a string replace for X+Y and replace it with the correct value, but that would become messy when trying to deal with all the possible in-string calculations I might want to do. I suppose I'm looking for a way to achieve this: string = "Something [X], something [Y]. Something [(X+Y^2)/5X]"; And for the [_] parts to be understood as expressions to be resolved before substituting back into the string. Thanks for your help.

• Parsing every part of an HTTP header field-value

  Hi all. I'm parsing HTTP data directly from packets (either TCP reconstructed or not, you can assume it is). I'm looking for the best way to parse HTTP as accurately as possible. The main issue here is the HTTP header. Looking at the basic RFC of HTTP/1.1, it seems that HTTP header parsing would be complex. The RFC describes very complex regular expressions for different parts of the header. Should I write these regular expressions to parse the different parts of the HTTP header? The basic parsing I've written so far for HTTP header is for the generic HTTP header: message-header = field-name ":" [ field-value ] And I've included replacing inner LWS with SP and repeating headers with the same field-name with comma separated values as described in section 4.2. However, looking at section 14.9 for example would show that in order to parse the different parts of the field-value I need a much more complex parsing scheme. How do you suggest I should handle the complex parts of HTTP parsing (specifically the field-value) assuming I want to give the parser users the full capabilities of HTTP and to parse every part of HTTP? Design suggestions for this would also be appreciated. Thanks.

• Regular expression, excluding .. in suffix of email addy

  This is homework, I've been working on it for a while, I've done lots of reading and feel I have gotten pretty familiar with regex for a beginner. I am trying to find a regular expression for validating/invalidating a list of emails. There are two addresses which are giving me problems, I can't get them both to validate the correct way at the same time. I've gone through a dozen different expressions that work for all the other emails on the list but I can't get those two at the same time. First, the addresses. [email protected] - invalid [email protected] - valid The part of my expression which validates the suffix I originally started with @.+\\.[[a-z]0-9]+ And had a second pattern for checking some more invalid addresses and checked the email against both patterns, one checked for validity the other invalidity but my professor said he wanted it all in on expression. @[[\\w]+\\.[\\w]+]+ or @[\\w]+\\.[\\w]+ I've tried it written many, many different ways but I'm pretty sure I was just using different syntax to express these two expressions. I know what I want it to do, I want it to match a character class of "character+"."character+"+ The plus sign being at least one. It works for the invalid class when I only allow the character class to repeat one time(and obviously the ip doesn't get matched), but when I allow the character class to repeat itself it matches the second period even thought it isn't preceded by a character. I don't understand why.

  I want to use PHP to calculate simple algebraic expressions like, 8*(5+1), entered via an <input> tag by a normal user (which means, normal notation: no syntax changes like Multiply(8, Add(5, 1))). Also, it has to show all steps, but that's not hard. The problem, right now, is calculating the value of the expressions. Note: this is what I thought so far, which is quite inefficient but it's a provisory solution. Just replace strings where possible: in our example, recognize the string 5+1 and replace it with 6. Then, loop again, replace (6) with 6, loop again, and replace 8*6 with 48. The code for multiplying, for example, should look like this: for ($a=1; $a < 1000; $a++) { for ($b=1; $b < 1000; $b++) { string_replace($a . '*' . $b, $a*$b, $string); } }

• WHY JSLint complains: "someFunction() was used before it was defined"?

  Searching for the JSLint error "was used before it was defined" i've found these: JSLint: Using a function before it's defined error Function was used before it was defined - JSLint JSLint: was used before it was defined jsLint error: “somefunction() was used before it was defined” jslint - Should we tolerate misordered definitions? Problem None of those answers WHY the error is shown. Elaboration According to the ECMA-262 Specification functions are evaluated before execution starts, hence all functions declared using the function keyword are available to all the code idenpendent of the place they were declared (assuming they are acessible on that scope). This is otherwise known as hoisting. Douglas Crockford seems to think it is better to declare every function before the code that uses it regardless of the hoisting effect. According to StackOverflowNewbie in his question, this raises some code organization problems. Not to mention some people, like me, prefer to declare their functions underneath the main/init code. On those questions there are some ways to avoid or fix the error, such as using function expressions vs function declarations. But none of them showed me the reason of the error. Not even Crockford's site. Question(s) Why is it an error to call a function before the declaration, even if it was declared using the function keyword? Is it better to use function expressions instead of function declaration in the JSLint context? If one is preferred, why? • OCaml delimiters and scopes

  Hello! I'm learning OCaml and although I have years of experience with imperative programming languages (C, C++, Java) I'm getting some problems with delimiters between declarations or expressions in OCaml syntax. Basically I understood that I have to use ; to concatenate expressions and the value returned by the sequence will be the one of last expression used, so for example if I have exp1; exp2; exp3 it will be considered as an expression that returns the value of exp3. Starting from this I could use let t = something in exp1; exp2; exp3 and it should be ok, right? When am I supposed to use the double semicol ;;? What does it exactly mean? Are there other delimiters that I must use to avoid syntax errors? I'll give you an example: let rec satisfy dtmc state pformula = match (state, pformula) with (state, `Next sformula) -> let s = satisfy_each dtmc sformula and adder a state = let p = 0.; for i = 0 to dtmc.matrix.rows do p <- p +. get dtmc.matrix i state.index done; a +. p in List.fold_left adder 0. s | _ -> [] It gives me syntax error on | but I don't get why.. what am I missing? This is a problem that occurs often and I have to try many different solutions until it suddently works :/ A side question: declaring with let instead that let .. in will define a var binding that lasts whenever after it has been defined? What I basically ask is: what are the delimiters I have to use and when I have to use them. • Why is Excel's 'Evaluate' method a general expression evaluator?

  A few questions have come up recently involving the Application.Evaluate method callable from Excel VBA. The old XLM macro language also exposes an EVALUATE() function. Both can be quite useful. Does anyone know why the evaluator that is exposed can handle general expressions, though? My own hunch is that Excel needed to give people a way to get ranges from string addresses, and to get the value of named formulas, and just opening a portal to the expression evaluator was the easiest way. (The help for the VBA version does say its purpose it to "convert a Microsoft Excel name to an object or a value".) But of course you don't need the ability to evaluate arbitrary expressions just to do that. (That is, Excel could provide a Name.Evaluate method or something instead.) Application.Evaluate seems kind of...unfinished. It's full behavior isn't very well documented, and there are quite a few quirks and limitations (as described by Charles Williams here: http://www.decisionmodels.com/calcsecretsh.htm) with what is exposed. I suppose the answer could be simply "why not expose it?", but I'd be interested to know what design decisions led to this feature taking the form that it does. Failing that, I'd be interested to hear other hunches.

  1) Is UNCHECKED operator in effect only when expression inside UNCHECKED context uses an explicit cast ( such as byte b1=unchecked((byte)2000); ) and when conversion to particular type can happen implicitly? I’m assuming this since the following expression throws a compile time error: byte b1=unchecked(2000); //compile time error 2) a) Do CHECKED and UNCHECKED operators work only when resulting value of an expression or conversion is of an integer type? I’m assuming this since in the first example ( where double type is being converted to integer type ) CHECKED operator works as expected: double m = double.MaxValue; b=checked((byte)m); // reports an exception , while in second example ( where double type is being converted to a float type ) CHECKED operator doesn’t seem to be working. since it doesn't throw an exception: double m = double.MaxValue; float f = checked((float)m); // no exception thrown b) Why don’t the two operators also work with expressions where type of a resulting value is of floating-point type? 2) Next quote is from Microsoft’s site: The unchecked keyword is used to control the overflow-checking context for integral-type arithmetic operations and conversions I’m not sure I understand what exactly have expressions and conversions such as unchecked((byte)(100+200)); in common with integrals? • MS 70-536 .NET Framework Foundation - info on Exam? Especially regex?

  Hi, I know there are already some questions about this, but not that specific. I have the self-paced training kit and worked through the test exam tool that is on the CD coming with the book. I constantly fail on the test tool, mostly on the regex questions. I'm not a regex guru. In fact my regex-fu is more than weak. I know what regex'es are, how I can use them and where my 'Regular expressions - kurz und gut' book is in my drawer in case I really need them. And to be honest I feel like learning regex is a total waste of time, because if I need them I have either a colleague that is fit and can do them in just a few seconds or I need my book and get them right in a still fair amount of time. And from my experience I can tell that I need regex like once in two or three years. So just putting in a lot of time into learning just the expressions to pass the exam is.. something I like not to have to do. Can you tell me something about the real exam vs. the test exam tool on the book and about the need to know regex for passing it? Thank you for your time. Marked as Community Wiki. Hope that fits?

  Hi , i am a newbie at ASP.net and after using sqldatasource with a listview to insert and show results from an SQL server db i want to try using the LINQ datasource since it seems to be more flexible in codebehind. • Change webserver used by Flex in FlexBuilder to .NET Framework 3.5

  I just had to reformat and reinstall Flex and reconstruct a project. The problem is i am using ASP.NET as my server side technology and using LINQ in my files. The version of WebDev.Webserver.exe that FlexBuilder starts up is the wrong version so I get this error : Compiler Error Message: CS0234: The type or namespace name 'Linq' does not exist in the namespace 'System' (are you missing an assembly reference?) Microsoft (R) Visual C# 2005 Compiler version 8.00.50727.3053 for Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 2005 Framework version 2.0.50727 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation 2001-2005. All rights reserved. I know that changing to the latest version of ASP.NET / Framework will fix this - but I just can't figure out HOW to make that change in Flexbuilder. I cant even remember if i ever successfully did it before or if I just created a virtual directory in IIS7. Where would I change the version?

• Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\MACHINENAME$'

  I know this is almost duplicate of : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1269706/the-error-login-failed-for-user-nt-authority-iusr-in-asp-net-and-sql-server-2 and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/97594/login-failed-for-user-username-system-data-sqlclient-sqlexception-with-linq-i but some things don't add up compared to other appliations on my server and I am not sure why. Boxes being used: Web Box SQL Box SQL Test Box My Application: I've got aASP.NET Web Application, which references a class library that uses LINQ-to-SQL. Connection string set up properly in the class library. As per http://stackoverflow.com/questions/97594/login-failed-for-user-username-system-data-sqlclient-sqlexception-with-linq-i I also added this connection string to the Web Application. The connection string uses SQL credentials as so (in both web app and class library): <add name="Namespace.My.MySettings.ConnectionStringProduction" connectionString="Data Source=(SQL Test Box);Initial Catalog=(db name);Persist Security Info=True;User ID=ID;Password=Password" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> This connection confirmed as working via adding it to server explorer. This is the connection string my .dbml file is using. The problem: I get the following error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\MACHINENAME$'. Now referencing this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1269706/the-error-login-failed-for-user-nt-authority-iusr-in-asp-net-and-sql-server-2 it says that's really the local network service and using any other non-domain name will not work. But I am confused because I've checked both SQL Box and SQL Test Box SQL Management Studio and both have NT AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICE under Security - Logins, at the database level, that isn't listed under Security - Users, but at the database level Security - Users I have the user displayed in the connection string. At NTFS level on web server, the permissions have NETWORK SERVICE has full control. The reason why I am confused is because I have many other web applications on my Web Server, that reference databases on both SQL Box and SQL Test Box, and they all work. But I cannot find a difference between them and my current application, other than I am using a class library. Will that matter? Checking NTFS permissions, setup of Security Logins at the server and databases levels, connection string and method of connecting (SQL Server credentials), and IIS application pool and other folder options, are all the same. Why do these applications work without adding the machinename$ to the permissions of either of my SQL boxes? But that is what the one link is telling me to do to fix this problem.

• Recommendations on resolving a cs1705 error

  I'm upgrading a number of solutions from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010RC. In the process of doing this, I've encountered two instances of compiler error cs1705, one for System.Core and another for System.Data.Linq. In each case, an assembly compiled earlier has a reference to the .NET 4.0 version of these system assemblies, while the web project I'm trying to compile only has references to the .NET 3.5 version of them. Adding .NET 4.0 versions of System.Core and System.Data.Linq to the web project doesn't resolve the error. Removing the .NET 3.5 versions of the assemblies so that only the .NET 4.0 versions remain results in even more errors. Any recommendations on how to resolve this error would be greatly appreciated.

[WebGet] MyClass[] WebMethod() If the signiature looks like this [WebGet] IEnumerable<T> WebMethod() I get the following error: Cannot serialize parameter of type 'X.Y.Z.T+<WebMethod>d__2c' (for operation 'WebMethod', contract 'IService') because it is not the exact type 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[X.Y.Z.T]' in the method signature and is not in the known types collection. In order to serialize the parameter, add the type to the known types collection for the operation using ServiceKnownTypeAttribute. I have tried adding. ServiceKnownType(typeof(IEnumerable)) Same error. Is this a bug in 2010 beta 2, or is this likely to be correct going forward? Thanks

• Exclude complete namespace from FxCop code analysis?

  Is it possible to exclude a complete namespace from all FxCop analysis while still analyzing the rest of the assembly using the SuppressMessageAttribute? In my current case, I have a bunch of classes generated by LINQ to SQL which cause a lot of FxCop issues, and obviously, I will not modify all of those to match FxCop standards, as a lot of those modifications would be gone if I re-generated the classes. I know that FxCop has a project option to suppress analysis on generated code, but it does not seem to recognize the entity and context classes created by LINQ 2 SQL as generated code.

• Linq2SQL using Update StoredProcedure

  We use queries generated by Linq for data retrieval but for INSERT and UPDATE we do not allow generated SQL, but restrict to the use of stored procedures. I connected the Update and the Insert behaviour in the DBML to the stored procedures. The procedures are called, the data gets inserted/updated = all if fine, except in the case of optimistic concurrency. If a record was changed between retrieval and update, the update should fail. When Linq generates the Update statement itself, it throws a ChangeConflictException as expected, but using the stored procedure no Exception is thrown. Thanks a lot for any help on this!

While researching the topic I found this: Java -- .Net rough equivalents It's a nice list but it's not quite exhaustive and is missing the key .NET 3.0 technologies and a few other tidbits. To complete that list: what are the near/rough equivalents (or a combination of technologies) in Java to the following in .NET? WCF WPF Silverlight WF Generics Lambda expressions Linq (not Linq-to-SQL) TPL F# IronPython IronRuby ...have i missed anything else?   Lets say you have a DataTable that has columns of "id", "cost", "qty": DataTable dt = new DataTable(); dt.Columns.Add("id", typeof(int)); dt.Columns.Add("cost", typeof(double)); dt.Columns.Add("qty", typeof(int)); And it's keyed on "id": dt.PrimaryKey = new DataColumn[1] { dt.Columns["id"] }; Now what we are interested in is the cost per quantity. So, in other words if you had a row of: id | cost | qty ---------------- 42 | 10.00 | 2 The cost per quantity is 5.00. My question then is, given the preceeding table, assume it's constructed with many thousands of rows, and you're interested in the top 3 cost per quantity rows. The information needed is the id, cost per quantity. You cannot use LINQ. In SQL it would be trivial; how BEST (most efficiently) would you accomplish it in C# without LINQ?

To complete that list: what are the near/rough equivalents (or a combination of technologies) in Java to the following in .NET? WCF WPF Silverlight WF Generics Lambda expressions Linq (not Linq-to-SQL) ...have i missed anything else? Note that I omitted technologies that are already covered in the linked article. • How to use IObservable/IObserver with ConcurrentQueue or ConcurrentStack

  I realized that when I am trying to process items in a concurrent queue using multiple threads while multiple threads can be putting items into it, the ideal solution would be to use the Reactive Extensions with the Concurrent data structures. My original question is at: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2997797/while-using-concurrentqueue-trying-to-dequeue-while-looping-through-in-parallel/ So I am curious if there is any way to have a LINQ (or PLINQ) query that will continuously be dequeueing as items are put into it. I am trying to get this to work in a way where I can have n number of producers pushing into the queue and a limited number of threads to process, so I don't overload the database. If I could use Rx framework then I expect that I could just start it, and if 100 items are placed in within 100ms, then the 20 threads that are part of the PLINQ query would just process through the queue.   Sorry for the vague title but I really didn't know what title to give to this problem: I have the following result set: ID Data Culture 1 A nl-NL 2 B nl-NL 3 C nl-NL 4 A en-GB 5 B en-GB 6 A en 7 B en 8 C en 9 D en 10 A nl I would like to mimic the ASP.Net way of resource selection, user Culture (nl-NL) SELECT Data FROM Tbl WHERE Culture = 'nl-NL' Or when there are no results for the specific culture, try the parent Culture (nl) SELECT Data FROM Tbl WHERE Culture = 'nl' Or when there are no results for the parent culture, try the default Culture (en) SELECT Data FROM Tbl WHERE Culture = 'en' How can I combine these SELECT-statements in one T-SQL statement? I'm using LINQ so a LINQ expression would be even greater. The OR-statement won't work, because I don't want a mix of cultures. The ORDER BY-statement won't help, because it returns multiple records per culture.
