• Making Lync option visible in Outlook/GAL/AD

  In a big organization, people are slowly moving towards using Lync and away from using landlines. A handful of times per month, I get a meeting invitation that includes a conference call number and a remark about "not sure if everybody is on Lync". Often everybody is, and we start in a conference call and switch to Lync. Is there a good way to make it visible if a user has access to Lync? Like I can hit the "Online meeting" button in Outlook - and it would be great to see, if everybody invited support Lync. Does something like that exist?

• Picasa v.3.6.2 for Mac is suddenly very slow - what are the implications of rebuilding my database?

  Recently Picasa v3.6.2 for Mac has become very sluggish - mainly noticable for any (non destructive) changes made to photos such as starring an image. This action used to be nearly immediate, but recently I've found it can take 1-3 seconds for Picasa to register the change, and become responsive again. I'm considering rebuilding my Picasa database as per these instructions - however I'm concerned I may lose any pre-existing non-destructive (unsaved) edits, along with Picasa albums that I have created. Curious if anyone has experienced Picasa sluggishness with the latest version and/or what their results have been from rebuilding their database. My last resort is to SuperDuper my drive and then rebuild the database, so I can always restore it if I lose critical data.

• Can I upgrade an Asus M51Sn laptop to 2x4GB of RAM? (DDR2)

  My Asus M51Sn has 2 RAM slots which currently have 1x1GB + 1x2GB DDR2-800 SODimm RAM modules installed. I've found out that 4GB DDR2 SODimm modules do exist, though they are impossible to find in local stores nere here, but I've found them in online stores like these: http://www.pccomponentes.com/g_skill_ddr2_800_pc2_6400_4gb_so_dimm.html They seem to meet the specification, so can I replace both my current modules with 2x4GB modules, and reach a total of 8GB? Or should I worry about some limit (e.g. 4GB max or 2GB per slot) imposed by the matherboard, chipset or whatever? (I currently use Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit, so I plan to use the pae kernel, which supposedly supports 4GB ram on a 32bit system; or I may consider switching tu 64bit ubuntu; the question is about hardware limitations, not OS limitations).

  Please can you tell me what the technical differences are between the Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 and the S1300 scanners? Other than that, the resolutions, pages per minute and physical sizes of both models are exactly the same. If so, is there a reason why I would want the S1300 instead of the cheaper S300? I just want a scanner for duplex document scanning, for home use (documents, receipts, etc.).

• Load Balancer recommendations

  I provide hosting service for about 250 clients to date, and this is increasing on a monthly basis. For each client, I have 2 "services" configured for L4 balancing / persistence .. one on port 80, another for port 443 which redirects to another internal port as well as 4 servers per service. This equates to a total of 500 "services" and 2000 "servers". I'm currently running with a couple CoyotePoint load balancers, and have had a look at some Barracudas but so far I'm really not impressed by those. Could anyone recommend some good load balancers which would be able to support this sort of load ? And which offer a good API, or shell access to automate management.

• Can't install Parallels Tools on Debian 7.2.0

  (Parallels Desktop 9, latest version) As per instructions, I switch to root: $ su - root $ whoami root $ echo $EUID 0 and then execute the installer: $ cd /media/cdrom0 $ ./install and I get this error: sudo: unable to execute ./install: Permission denied What? I'm root! What's with this? I double check to make sure the execute bit is set: $ ls -lA | grep install$ -r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 17284 Oct 25 09:22 install Yep. People online are saying that you need to drag the install script to the terminal after typing sudo. So I do that, and this command is what's formed: $ sudo '/media/cdrom0/install' sudo: unable to execute /media/cdrom0/install: Permission denied What's the solution here?

• Could a too low voltage during long periods damage my computer fan?

  Computer fans use to run at 12Volt, but most as for today they allow 9Volt or even less to slow down the fan speed (RPM, Revolutions Per Minute). In cases of too low voltage, the fan stops, but I can see it "trying to start again". For example: my Tacens 9dB fan stops at about 10 Volts, but to start it again, 10.5Volt is not enough, and the engine tries to move the fan (I can see a small movement as an "attempt" to move) each 1-5 seconds, but it does not succees, so the fan keeps at 0 RPM. Maybe that "attempt" to move could damage the internal engine of the fan when it last for hours or days?

I have an hosted DNS for public resources (which are typically at some data centre somewhere) Occasionally while on our internal network I need to get to a public resource --- for example www.ourcompany.com since there isn't a www record in our internal DNS I cant get the name resolved. How do I configure my DNS to forward names it doesn't recognise to the public DNS. Update: As per the comment yes I have a "split-horizon" dns (which seemed like a good idea at the time) This AD setup is less than 24 hours old, and can be redone if need be -- (although I would rather not)

• shibboleth: tomcat failing to start IdP listener

  I have installed a Shibboleth Identity Provider as per http://www.edugate.ie/workshop-guides/shibboleth-2-identity-provider-installation-linux-debian-or-ubuntu However, testing only gave me a 404 from Tomcat, and when I checked the Tomcat logs, I saw that the IdP listener was not starting: 10/01/2011 11:25:31 AM org.apache.catalina.startup.HostConfig deployDescriptor INFO: Deploying configuration descriptor idp.xml 10/01/2011 11:25:32 AM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start SEVERE: Error listenerStart 10/01/2011 11:25:32 AM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start SEVERE: Context [/idp] startup failed due to previous errors The IdP descriptor file has the following context: <Context docBase="/opt/shibboleth-idp/war/idp.war" privileged="true" antiResourceLocking="false" antiJARLocking="false" unpackWAR="true" /> I have confirmed that the WAR file is located as the Context above specifies - as I have found similar issues from other people where the WAR file was not found. However, the logs posted by those people indicate that the descriptor file was correctly read by Tomcat and their problem was with the WAR file itself. I'm assuming this is some kind of syntax error with the idp.xml, but cannot determine what it might be. Also - setting the Tomcat logging level to FINEST does not provide any additional information in the logs for this error.

  I want to soft wrap text in Vim to 90 columns per line. I want soft wrap so that it doesn't affect actual text by adding line break characters. Here's is what I tried: // Opened a file with lots of text and ran the following: set wrap set tw=90 set linebreak Running the commands doesn't change anything about the view at all. It soft wraps at the end of the window. I have used "Soft Wrap" in TextMate by Command-Option-W to get the same effect, and want to know how to get it work on Vim.

• Importing email from other accounts in Gmail

  I have a Gmail account that imports (via POP) messages from an old Hotmail account that people still send mail to. I normally read my mail with Thunderbird, not the web interface. The thing is that Gmail imports the mails once per hour (approx), and sometimes I want to know if right now there are messages in my old account. I could just go and hit the "import now" button, but whatever. Is there someplace in the settings where I can change it so the importing happens once each, say, 15 minutes? Alternatively, is it possible to make a script that will tell Gmail to import the messages at that moment, just like it would if I went to the Settings and clicked "Check if I have mail now". I've heard about libgmail for Python, but it doesn't seem like it can do that.

• how to create iso dvd image for use with mac/osx "Disk Utility"?

  This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail - how to do this - what the options mean e.g. format "mac OS extended (journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard dvd as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'terminal' (the whole point of buying a mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

• Forward Windows Events Logs to Rsyslog

  Thanks for taking time to read this post. Basically I would like to forward Windows Events Logs from all my desktop clients to a linux box with rsyslog on. Rsyslog provide a Windows agent to do just that but its 40 euros per license and when you have x amount of machines that cost adds up. I was wondering if there is a FOSS alternative available I have tried searching the Google but haven't managed to find anything. • Stability, x86 Vs Sparc

  Our project are plan to migrate from Sparc to x86, and our HA requirement is 99.99%, previous on Sparc, we assume the hardware stability would like, hardware failure every 4 month or even one year, and also we have test data for our application, then we have requirement for each unplanned recovery (fail over) to achieve 99.99% (52.6 minutes unplanned downtime per year). But since we are going to use Intel x86, it seems the hardware stability is not so good as Sparc, but we don't have the detail data. So compare with Sparc, how about the stability of the Intel x86, should we assume we have more unplanned downtime? If so, how many, double? Where I can find some more detail of this two type of hardware?

  Hi, what is better to have - more LUNs or more Storages. Actually i have 1 storage ESXi per 1 LUN so there are about 15 LUNs and 15 storages. Now there is a kind of problem because the LUNs have different space allocated so if i remove 2 LUNs f.e. 1 2 3 4 [x] 6 [x] 8 9 (like that) i can't make 1 LUN from 5 and 7 pieces of free diskspace on IBM storage array. It's a first argument to not have a lot of LUNs. If i had to make only a few LUNs (about 3) and inside some Storage from ESXi would it be a better idea? For example for expanding storage capacity? i look for good solutions. Thanks in advance.

I am not sure but as per my knowledge primary and secondary name server will reply in round robin method till they are live , once any name server will be unreachable then only another will be reply...so if i am right then i think i can do incoming failover by making two name server in my office...   We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

  I assume I have set up them up incorrectly or am missing a library or dependency. When I log into the OMSA web interface I can't see anything Also, omreport tells me nothing; root@box:~# omreport storage controller No controllers found I assume these two will use the same source of information so what ever is wrong will fix them both. I set up OMSA as per these instructions. Also I have compiled MegaCLI (as this is a PowerEdge 2950 with a Perc 6/i controller) and I have used that to update the RAID firmware, so that works, but the Dell tools aren't.   We have setup our network as per the tutorial here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Upside-Down-TernetHowTo. Basically, we have a squid proxy that inverts images for pages that clients request. We're trying to modify the script so that we can edit the contents of the webpage before the webpage is sent to the client. We are not having any luck. I'm wondering if there is something different about .html files that makes this not possible. What is happening is that we do a wget on the URI that is requested, save it locally, modify it and then echo back the new URI. The page that the user gets is the unmodified page and not the one that we just changed.

• VirtualBox serial port, limit of two?

  Using VirtualBox, Is there a limit of two serial ports per VM? I'm currently engaging in a task that requires more than two, but less than or equal to four ports. I'm at a loss of what to do to get COM3 and COM4 up? How do I do it if the Virtual Box GUI doesn't currently support more than two serial host devices? Can I configure them external to the GUI? Is there a hard-cap on two devices? And, if so, for the love of god, please entertain me with the reasoning? I know Windows and Linux don't impose such a limit, it would seem awkward to impose it in virtualization layer. This is for cheap dial-in project with proprietary Windows tools. I'm using a Quatech serial multiport adapter to provide the ports to multimodems.
