• capistrano still asks for the 1st password even though I've set up an ssh key???

  Hi, Background: I've setup an ssh key to avoid having to use passwords with capistrano per http://www.picky-ricky.com/2009/01/ssh-keys-with-capistrano.html. A basic ssh to my server does work fine without asking for passwords. I'm using "dreamhost.com" for hosting. Issue - When I run 'cap deploy' I still get asked for the 1st password (even through the previous 2nd and 3rd password requests are now automated). It is the capistrano command that start with "git clone - q ssh:....." for which the password is being requested. Question - Is there something I've missed? How can I get "cap deploy" totally passwordless? Some excerts from config/deploy.rb are: set :use_sudo, false ssh_options[:keys] = [File.join(ENV["HOME"], ".ssh", "id_rsa")] default_run_options[:pty] = true thanks PS. • Windows apps keep switching to accented text

  Somehow I keep hitting a shortcut key (or something similar) that enables the input of accented text. Whenever this accented text mode is enabled, pressing ' doesn't respond immediately; instead, the ' key is remembered, so if I press a vowel after that, I get the vowel with an acute accent mark, and if I press any other key, I immediately get an apostrophe followed by the other key. I don't want this to happen. It's very annoying. How do I disable this mode? I only remember seeing this in Firefox 3.6.3 and Pidgin 2.6.6, so maybe it's a GTK feature. It apparently happens on a per-application basis, and restarting the application fixes it. I checked Windows 7's "Region and Language" control panel and didn't see anything relevant (although I'm not intimately familiar with all of those settings, so I may have overlooked something).

• Realtek HD Audio playing weird with certain video formats

  Hi, I have a Gigabyte motherboard with an onboard Realtek HD sound card. The card is working perfectly everywhere, except for a single video format, where the voice is distorted, sounds as if it's been passed through a metal tube. Been googling for this, but couldn't find an answer anywhere. The movie plays fine on other systems (got Linux everywhere else), but on this one (winXP-x64-sp2) it just doesn't. • DFS-R (2008 and R2) 2 node server cluster, all file writes end in conflictAndDeleted

  Both servers in a 2 server cluster are reporting event 4412 20,000 times per day. If I sit in the conflictAndDetected folder I can observe files appearing and disappearing. Users report that their files saved by peers at the same location are overriding each other. The configuration began with a single server, then DFS-R was set up using the 2008 R2 wizard that set up the share on the second server. DFSN was set up independently. Windows users have drives mapped using domain based namespace (\domain.com\share). Mac users are pointed directly to the new server share created by DFS-R. It is PC users indicating most of the lost files, but there has been 2 reports by Mac users about files reverting.

• SBSMonitoring.mdf reached limit

  I have SBS 08 Standart. I have some Error in my Event Viewer with MSSQL$SBSMONITORING Event id 1105, 1827: Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.EventLog'.'PK_EventLog' in database 'SBSMonitoring' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 4096 MB per database. I tried to schrink the database, worked for SBSMonitoring_log.LDF but nothing for the SBSMonitoring.mdf, still 4096MB. I don't know how to reinstall the monitoring. Thanks for your help.

• Beginners advice on Small business network disk(s)

  We are having 10 PCs used by various user and presently use one network disk (a LaCie NAS) for all our data. Everything is Windows Vista and our collective IT hardware knowledge is minimal. This worked well generally. However, recently the disk freqently loses connection from the network (2-3 times per week) and the only way back seems to be the "turn it off and back on" trick. This obviously cant be any good for the disk. I understand that there are various more sophisticated ways of storing data and was wondering what people would recommend. One of the worries is obviously disk failure (either in part or as a whole) and the lack of continued availability due to network issues. I would guess that a disk which replicates data wouldnt work as a sole solution due to the network connection, but dont know what hardware (and/or software) would/could work in our case. In terms of size, we are looking at very small amounts, ie. less than 500 GB in total.

• What email providers have extremely high reliability and robust SLAs?

He had been using his university email address for professional correspondence, when he found out that the university had permanently lost 16 business-related emails in their spam filter (with no apology, notification, or compensation). What I am looking for now is an email provider (preferably with Exchange, but not required) with very high reliability and a SLA that is basically an insurance policy. I have looked at Google Apps's SLA, but this will not suit. I am looking for a provider who will take $X per month in registration fees, and will: Alert me when there is any downtime. Promptly fix the issue Pay me a fee ($Y) whenever there is downtime. I want a significant, contractual reason for them to be diligent in their service. Free service for me is not enough.

• Current alternative to the old CHECKSUM program

  I'm looking for an application that does md5/sha hash check on specific files/folders periodically and store an index file per folder for future verification. I remember such application exist in DOS days, to detect files infected by virus. The main purpose for this is to detect corrupted copy of backup, as I understand that consumer grade hardware are not 100% error free when doing backup or file transfer from device to device. The hash can also be used to generate a list of changed files for backup. Most of the software I can find is hash manually. EDIT: Windows based application, preferably a shell extension which I can right click on a folder and do a checksum/verify all files in that folder. Even better if that can integrate with a backup/sync program like BeyondCopy

• Brand new Lenovo u410 heats up around touchpad

  My Lenovo u410 started heating around the right palm rest minutes after I unpacked it! I am devastated, because I bought this for programming, and it's impossible to type on this for extended periods with the surface getting so hot. I haven't run any serious programs on it yet, so the processor has been pretty much idle. I've been Googling this problem, and found only one person who had this issue too. Is this is a defect in the product? Why aren't many others getting this problem? I bought it via newegg.com and as per their policy you can't return a product once you've opened it. Specs: Core i5, 6 GB RAM, 750 GB harddisk. Running Windows 8.

• What is a fairly accepted endpoints to concurrent calls ratio for a PBX?

Not too positive about the relevance of this question to Server Fault, but I'll let you guys poke around at it anyway. :) I'm trying to figure out what an accepted ratio of endpoints to concurrent calls on the "average" office PBX. I'm defining concurrent calls as any call being placed, including internal calls. I'm not going to be considering call centers into this ratio, I'll be looking at those differently, anyway. To give you guys a little history behind the question: I need this ratio to be able to figure out decent specs for a virtual PBX service I'm going to be rolling out within the upcoming months.   I'd like to find a small linux box with the following specifications: Small (mini-ITX size is OK) Fanless Runs Debian At least two gigabit network interfaces WLAN that supports "host ap" with hostapd + mac80211 in AP mode Can encrypt AES at least 10 megabytes per second Total cost $300 or less Solutions from multiple parts also accepted - I can buy an external network card etc. and build the box myself if the components are available. If you don't know about the "host ap" thing, just suggest your solution, I'll find out if I can get that resolved. If I can't get all that, I can possibly skip the "runs Debian" part, and I can definitely skip the hostapd part if the box can be a wireless access point with multiple ESSIDs out of the box. Something like Asus RT-N16 is close - doesn't run Debian easily, and probably doesn't encrypt AES fast enough. Something like Zotac ZBOX HD-ID11 is also close - no idea which WLAN card it has and it lacks second gigabit interface, but otherwise nice.

• Using optimization to assign by preference

  I have 100 objects ("candies") that I need to distribute between five people so that each has an equal number of candies (in this case, 20 candies per person). However, each person has also expressed their preferences of candy to me in a chart, similar to below. Top-favored candies receive 10 points, least-favored candies receive -10 points, and neutral-favored candies receive 0.5 points. I need to sort the items out so that: Each person receives the same number of candies Each person's total "satisfaction" (points) is maximized My output is a list of each person's assigned items I'm familiar with Excel's in-house Monte Carlo simulation tools (Solver, F9 diceroll, etc) and would like to stick to those tools. While I know how to set up the chart, and how to use the column summation to input into Solver, I don't know how to get it to give me the desired output. Furthermore, how do I adjust the solver so it takes into account individual preferences rather than empirical ones? To wit: how do I begin setting up this model?

  I have an ext2 filesystem with a maximum number of inodes per directory (somewhere around 32k), and also a maximum number of inodes in the entire filesystem (somewhere around 350m). Because I'm using this filesystem as a datastore for a service that has in excess of 32k objects, I'm distributing those objects between multiple subdirectories (like a dictionary separates A-K and L-Z). My question is this: Is there any significance to the tree depth when I'm building these inodes? Is there a significant difference or limitation that's going to affect my service if I choose "/usr/www/service/data/a_k/aardvark" over "/data/a_k/aardvark"?

• ESXi boot time with 9 iSCSI targets

  Our ESXi hosts have always been slow booting when it came to iscsi_vmk loaded successfully - sitting here for almost 5 minutes. In all a full server reboot takes almost 12 minutes. We have 9 iSCSI targets per host (5 SANs with redundant interfaces) configured as dynamic discovery targets. Has anyone experienced this? Can it be remedied with static discovery mode? Are there any debug steps we can work through to help diagnose this? (All our targets are accessible at boot so i'm assuming the host isn't stuck retrying to connect to a target)

  Does mysql support multiple file systems for a single database with most of the tables being on MyISAM? Context: we have a 1.5TB mysql database, which is increasing at the rate of 200GB per month. The storage is directly attached, whose slots are almost full. I can add another DAS, and increase the file system. But resizing volume, resizing file system, etc are getting messy. Is there a concept of "tablespace, datafile" (like in oracle) in MySql world? Or how you guys manage mysql db with these kind of constraints?

• Is there an apache module to slow down site scans?

Each night, random hosts from the Internet are probing them for various vulnerabilities in php, phpadmin, horde, mysqladmin, etc. Is there a way (apache plugin?) to slow down the rate of attack? For SSH, I have a rate limiting rule on the firewall, which does not allow more than three connections per minute. But I don't want to rate limit all HTTP access, only the access that returns 404s. Is there such an apache module?

• Fine-tuning a LNMP stack

  I'm in the process of setting up a server with 4GB RAM and 2 CPUs. The stack will be CentOS + NGINX + MySQL + PHP (with APC) and spawn-fcgi. It will be used to serve 10 Wordpress blogs, 3 of which receive about 20,000 hits per day. Each Wordpress instance is equipped with the W3 TotalCache. I have a few variables to play with: NGINX (How many worker_processes, worker_connections, etc) PHP (What parameters in php.ini should I change? What about apc?) Spawn-fcgi (Right now I have 6 php-cgi spawned. How many of them should I have?) I realize it's hard to tell without testing, but if you could please provide me with some ballpark numbers, that would be helpful too.

• The downsides of using nginx as a primary web server?

  Hello. I've seen millions of websites using nginx as a proxifying webserver working together with Apache. But I've seen very few servers running nginx only as their default webserver. What are the main downsides of such config? I can see some: Inability to use per-directory config files like .htaccess so every configuration change should be done to main server config file and requires server reload. But pecl htscanner can compensate them for php settings Unavailability of mod_php for nginx, which can be compensated by php-fpm for example. What are others? Why don't people just drop Apache and move to nginx or any other lightweight solution? May be, there are some special reasons?

• VLC opening direct 3d output windows

  As you can in this above image there are two windows of vlc player, I just want to get rid of the other vlc direct3d output window. VLC version is latest i.e. 2.0.1. If I change the video output to some other also; this thing doesn't change. Only the title changes i.e. now it is direct3d output then it will change to openGL or as per the selected output video option. This happens when I play *.mov files.

• Yum Update fails due to conflicting perl packages

  Hi I have a CentOS 5.2 i386 Production box with Qmail, LAMP etc now since it showed me that it could upgrade to 5.3, i downloaded all the packages using yum update However, the update fails due to perl packages conflicting I believe that while installing Qmail, I had tried for Mailscanner and thus it upgraded the per itself I read somewhere that we can uninstall the conflicting rpms and then go for the upgrade But, I am about 50 % sure that if I go ahead and uninstall perl, my server will crash like a falling house of cards Also, perl is needed by variety of packages working including vpopmail etc Thus, I request anyone to please tell me if we have a safer solution to this IF there is no solution to this, then can somebody please teach me how to backup and restore Qmail as it is. • Best practice Raid groups for EqualLogic PS6510X

  We are thinking about purchasing 4 x EqualLogic PS6510X SANs (the Sumo boxes). Each has 48 x 600GB 10k SAS drives. They will be stacked to form a logical pool of storage (all in the same location). I understand that when you create a RAID group its done on a "per box" basis. So one box could be Raid 50, another Raid 10 etc. My question is, should I make one box a "performance" box ie Raid 10, and the other boxes "standard" ie Raid50? How do people configure their EQL arrays in the real world?

• Nginx Static Content Server Maxing Out?

  I use nginx to serve the static content for a decently busy website of mine. I have the logging disabled, and 4 worker processes enabled with 5,000 connections per worker (which should yield a max connection limit of 20,000. The server is only operating at about 10% CPU usage and 50% ram, but it's very laggy, and sometimes nginx is so slow to respond to the requests, it times out. For a small number of connections, it's fine, but once any load starts occurring (~2,500 connections), it backs up and bogs down. Is there any other bottlenecks or limits that I might be hitting? This is a FreeBSD server, and all the static files are located locally (not NFS). The NIC is an unmetered gigabit, and it's only using around 75 megabit. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Send one invalid email response to sender

  I discovered that my postfix/dovecot configuration isn't rejecting emails. If a person sends an email to an invalid email-address, it just drops it. I am fine with this behavior since I think it discourages spammers from mining emails (I have had some success). Recently a person I did not want to talk to emailed an address I cut off and didn't receive a response back. It would have saved me some problems if they knew to call me instead of sending 50+ emails. How would I configure Dovecot/postfix to send a message back to a sender of an email address and then limit this 1 per domain or unique email. • Is it a good idea to have the operating system on a solid state drive?

  There is something I don't quite understand. I know a SSD helps with OS load times, but I'm not sure if all this boost is only noticeable/interesting when booting, or gives an all around considerably better experience thereafter. I am interested in having a quick and responsive environment after booting, which leads me to think that it'd be better to spend the SSD capacity in my most used apps (and the page file? Another inside question) and not the OS itself. This, of course, means that I don't know just how much the OS reads/writes its files during normal usage. So, how good an idea is it to dump the whole 20GB+ of Windows 7 OS into the SSD (considering the hefty price per GB of SSD capacity) if I can put up with the usual hard disk boot times? Would I be missing on a lot if I didn't?
