  • small IIS web farm-create an Active Directory domain or no?

    We have a smallish web farm of < 5 Windows 2008 servers. Some do data, most do IIS hosting. Is it a good/bad idea to set up a domain controller and put all in the same "production" domain? We want to avoid a world where we have to sync multiple admin passwords between the boxes (or share admin credentials among the team). Presumably, the DC would be just another VM, so hardware cost doesn't enter into the discussion.

I've tried multiple keyboards and the issue is the same.   • Sharepoint 2010, People Picker (peoplepicker-searchadforests), 1 way Active Directory trust .... process monitor to the rescue!

    If you run Sharepoint 2010 in one forest, users in another forest and a 1-way forest in-place.  There is some additional configuration needed in Sharepoint 2010.  I included links below that discuss the details.  My post is not to be in-depth how to setup, rather share a tidbit not discussed in documentation (not that I could find).  Thanks to a smart co-worker and process monitor, it was found there is a registry entry, the application pool needs READ access.  You can either manually grant permissions on the server or add registry permission in AD Group Policy.  Hope this helps.   • winkey + arrow key doesn't move windows to 2nd monitor on linux

    in Windows, win+ <-- and win+ --> snap any window to the left/right side of a monitor, and if pressed again, snap the window to the other monitor, in multi-monitor environment. when a window is maximized, it will "restore" the window first, and at the next win+ <-- key the window will snap. this is very easy to use and remember. But on Linux a maximized window is not affected by win+ <-- , and the user must explicitly un-maximize it (win+down. the window is not moved to another monitor a side-snapped window cannot be resized - it behaves like a maximized window. is there another program that behaves like Windows, or I should write one by myself? (i'm using ubuntu/mint)

  • Can i change the order of these OpenGL / Win32 calls?

    I've been adapting the NeHe ogl/win32 code to be more object orientated and I don't like the way some of the calls are structured. The example has the following pseudo structure: Register window class Change display settings with a DEVMODE Adjust window rect Create window Get DC Find closest matching pixel format Set the pixel format to closest match Create rendering context Make that context current Show the window Set it to foreground Set it to having focus Resize the GL scene Init GL The points in bold are what I want to move into a rendering class (the rest are what I see being pure win32 calls) but I'm not sure if I can call them after the win32 calls. Essentially what I'm aiming for is to encapsulate the Win32 calls into a Platform::Initiate() type method and the rest into a sort of Renderer::Initiate() method. So my question essentially boils down to: "Would OpenGL allow these methods to be called in this order?" Register window class Adjust window rect Create window Get DC Show the window Set it to foreground Set it to having focus Change display settings with a DEVMODE Find closest matching pixel format Set the pixel format to closest match Create rendering context Make that context current Resize the GL scene Init GL (obviously passing through the appropriate window handles and device contexts.)   • Ubuntu Unity (64-bit) Bugs on Nvidia dual screen [closed]

    On my work computer I have upgraded 10.04 to 10.10 and now to 11.04. Upgrades have mostly worked well and the dual screen setup is almost working. There are however a couple of annoying bugs which I tried to report but the bug reporting tool told me to ask about the bugs here. Here's what I have found: Auto-hide stops working. It doesn't seem to matter which application is maximised/covering the dock, it just stays on top. I have tested changing the autohide settings with no result. Scenario: One maximised window on each screen. If I now try to drag the window that doesn't have focus by dragging the top of the window nothing happens. I can also not give the window focus by clicking the top bar, I have to click inside the window and then I can drag the window. If I unmaximise the window with focus it does work and I can both change focus and drag the window directly by clicking the top of the maximised window. Any bug fixes coming for these issues? Any work-arounds?

  • Whats a good host for an active vBulletin site?

    I've been switching hosts using a VPS each time and I'm just really not sure I'm finding the right VPS's. I've used a VPS from burst.net & rubyringtech and I just feel like it's slowly killing my site because of the slow speed. I really don't know if it's the network or the VPS itself but I really wish to fix this. When I TOP into the VPS peak times it shows this: top - 03:18:56 up 16:33, 1 user, load average: 1.33, 1.40, 1.33 Tasks: 30 total, 1 running, 29 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 27.2%us, 13.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 59.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 1048576k total, 679712k used, 368864k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached And pages take atleast a good 2-3 minutes to load. I have only like 50-60 members on the forum also. I had a shared hosting account and the forum was lightning fast.... Is a VPS a bad idea? :\ What should I do to fix this? I'm running lighttpd with xcache, and the latest mysql + php version. The server is a intel i7 2600 w/ 1gb uplink (I think the 1gb uplink is a lie because I've tested the network and the highest download speed I've seen was 20mb/s from a code.google page) All in all I've seen people talking about linode. Should I try them? I honestly don't need a dedicated server yet it's only 50-70 members online. What should I do? I really want a VPS because I enjoy root access. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    I have a class named GuestbookEntry that maps to the properties that are in the database table named "guestbook". Very simple! Originally, I had a static method named getActiveEntries() that retrieved an array of all GuestbookEntry objects. Each row in the guestbook table was an object that was added to that array. Then while learning how to properly design PHP classes, I learned some things: Static methods are not desirable. Separation of Concerns Single Responsibility Principle If the GuestbookEntry class should only be responsible for managing single guestbook entries then where should this getActiveEntries() method most properly go? Update: I am looking for an answer that complies with the SOLID acronym principles and allows for test-ability. That's why I want to stay away from static calls/standard functions. DAO, repository, ...? Please explain as though your explanation will be part of "Where to Locate FOR DUMMIES"... :-)

  • How can I operate on the active X display using a command in the console?

    I have problems where compiz freezes and I have to switch to another console(ctrl+alt+F1) to restart. But it would be easier if I could just do "$ compiz --replace" in the other console and not have to lose work or anything. But when I do this it says it can't open the display, makes sense because the display is open in console 7. Is there any way I can easily redirect a command to another console for it to be run there? Like for instance, be in console 1 and execute "$ compiz --replace" on console 7?

  • How do I calculate the boundary of the game window after transforming the view?

    My Camera class handles zoom, rotation, and of course panning. It's invoked through SpriteBatch.Begin, like so many other XNA 2D camera classes. It calculates the view Matrix like so: public Matrix GetViewMatrix() { return Matrix.Identity * Matrix.CreateTranslation(new Vector3(-this.Spatial.Position, 0.0f)) * Matrix.CreateTranslation(-( this.viewport.Width / 2 ), -( this.viewport.Height / 2 ), 0.0f) * Matrix.CreateRotationZ(this.Rotation) * Matrix.CreateScale(this.Scale, this.Scale, 1.0f) * Matrix.CreateTranslation(this.viewport.Width * 0.5f, this.viewport.Height * 0.5f, 0.0f); } I was having a minor issue with performance, which after doing some profiling, led me to apply a culling feature to my rendering system. It used to, before I implemented the camera's zoom feature, simply grab the camera's boundaries and cull any game objects that did not intersect with the camera. However, after giving the camera the ability to zoom, that no longer works. The reason why is visible in the screenshot below. The navy blue rectangle represents the camera's boundaries when zoomed out all the way (Camera.Scale = 0.5f). So, when zoomed out, game objects are culled before they reach the boundaries of the window. The camera's width and height are determined by the Viewport properties of the same name (maybe this is my mistake? I wasn't expecting the camera to "resize" like this). What I'm trying to calculate is a Rectangle that defines the boundaries of the screen, as indicated by my awesome blue arrows, even after the camera is rotated, scaled, or panned. Here is how I've more recently found out how not to do it: public Rectangle CullingRegion { get { Rectangle region = Rectangle.Empty; Vector2 size = this.Spatial.Size; size *= 1 / this.Scale; Vector2 position = this.Spatial.Position; position = Vector2.Transform(position, this.Inverse); region.X = (int)position.X; region.Y = (int)position.Y; region.Width = (int)size.X; region.Height = (int)size.Y; return region; } } It seems to calculate the right size, but when I render this region, it moves around which will obviously cause problems. It needs to be "static", so to speak. It's also obscenely slow, which causes more of a problem than it solves. What am I missing?

I could Force quit Safari, but I've got several sites open right now and don't want to try and find my place again. Besides, I've seen similar hacks in the past and I'd like to learn how to handle them in a way better than just a brute force-quit. I've never heard of MacKeeper or Zeobit, so I opened Firefox and did a few searches while Safari is obviously still stuck, waiting for me to click the sneaky OK button in the dialog window. Anyhow, at least the first few pages of most search results contain lots of blabbering from questionable witnesses about how MacKeeper saved them from some malware or spyware. However, any company that is hacking the browser to maliciously install their product is itself the criminal and not providing a true security application. So, there are three questions here: How can I close this window? Can I do something to Safari to avoid these hacks in the future? (Just curious) Is MacKeeper or Zeobit somehow loading the search results so that no information about their application being malware or spyware is listed (I can't be the only person in the world that is offended by their tactics, even though it appears I am)?

  • VNC Address Book - Window Invisible? Working as intended?

    I have VNC Server and VNC Viewer on the same PC with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Is VNC Address Book supposed to have a main application window? I can't tell if this is bugged or working as intended. When I start VNC Address book, it creates an item in the task list and also an icon in the notification area. If I click the task list item once, nothing happens. If I click again, it disappears from the task list but remains in the notification area**. If I right-click the icon on the notification area, there is an option 'open address book', which if chosen, creates the item in the task list again, with the exact same behavior. If I left or right click on the address book icon, I have ways to connect to servers in the address book. However I have no way to add/remove/edit servers in the address book. **Note that this behavior is identical to that of an application with a main window where there is an option to 'minimize to system tray / notification area'. Only here, no main window is visible, ever. If fixing this problem is beyond the scope of this site, that's fine, but at this point I have no real way to tell if the program is malfunctioning on my pc or if it is far more minimalist than I expected. There appears to be no forum on realvnc.com where I can ask about this, perhaps this is to prevent me from getting any help unless I pay to register?

  • jQuery not and classes

    Hi Guys, I have 2 anchor links (a.selector) and when one is clicked it has a class applied to it of 'active-arrow' and the click also removes the class of the same name from the other anchor as well as lowering the opacity to 0.2. I then want to have a fade effect when the user hovers over the anchor that doesn't have 'active-arrow' applied to it so that it goes to full opacity when mouseenters and back to 0.2 when mouseleaves. The problem im having is that both .not and :not don't seem to be working as expected, the hover effect works but if I click on the anchor whilst hovering the 'active-arrow' class is applied but when mouseleaves the opacity is faded down to 0.2 again even though the 'active-arrow' class is applied. Also the hover then doesn't work for the other a link which has had 'active-arrow' removed.   • tabs using jquery

    I currently have a tabbed system in place, however it not doing exactly as I need it too, I was hoping that by navigating to the URL with #tab2 suffixed on then end it would navigate to my tabbed page and the tab that is present in the URL would be the one that is active, however the first tab in the sequence is always active, is there a way to check what is being passed in the URL first and if there is #tabid present then make that tab the current tab?   • Why does my JQuery Image swap not work in firefox or chrome, but fine in IE?

    Hi, Relatively new to JQuery. I've got some code that does a banner swap with a fade in fade out transition. The images swap as expected in IE8, chrome, and firefox. However, the actual fade, the smooth transition between images only works in IE. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a fix?   • Visual Basic 2010: How to make window/form become active foreground?

    I'm using Visual Basic 2010 Express. I have a form that can be minimized. There's also a tray icon. I've coded it so that if you double-click on the tray icon, the form's FormWindowState becomes set to Normal; this restores the form to where it to where it was before it became minimized, but the form does not become the active window on my desktop. How can I make the form become the active most foreground window? I've tried various functions that I can think of but no luck yet. Tried searching with various queries to try and find the right wording but no luck. I'm new to Visual Basic - only started a couple hours ago. Probably something simple but I can't seem to find the correct function or anything... Please enlighten me! Thanks.

  • Any way to remove IEs black border around submit button in active forms?

    I am implementing a design that uses custom styled submit-buttons. They are quite simply light grey buttons with a slightly darker outer border: input.button { background: #eee; border: 1px solid #ccc; } This looks just right in Firefox, Safari and Opera. The problem is with Internet Explorer, both 6 and 7. Since the form is the first one on the page, it's counted as the main form - and thus active from the get go. The first submit button in the active form receives a solid black border in IE, to mark it as the main action. If I turn off borders, then the black extra border in IE goes away too. I am looking for a way to keep my normal borders, but remove the outline.

  • what does "Net user administrator /active:yes" do to a computer?

    i just purchased a new laptop and had some issues with it... I called tech support and they had me run this command in cmd prompt by right clicking the cmd icon and selecting "run as administrator" with root C:\windows\system32: "Net user administrator /active:no" after it was determined that it didn't fix the issue we ran this code "Net user administrator /active:yes" i then rebooted..and was asked for my windows login for my user account "Rees" as usual.. however ALL my settings where gone (including my desktop files) as though it was the first time I booted up. WHAT in the world happened with this command?? I desperately NEED my user accounts and files back to how they were!! (running windows 7) Please help!
