• Website Access...DNS, ISP, issue?

  This isn't so much a code issue as it might be an issue with my ISP. For some reason when I visit a site very often, like one I manage or write stories on, it will just stop pulling data down after a while. It's very random when it happens, but probably happens once a week. If effects everyone who is accessing the site from this connection, and I can access other sites no problem. Also, if I go outside the office back home, which is right down the street, and access the site it is fine. I'm using Comcast in both locations. It's almost as if I have a limit on requests to each site and have hit my limit so it blocks the site for a while. Anybody have any clue what this might be?

• What's the most important trait of a programmer desired by peer programmers [closed]

  Questions here talk about most important programming skills someone is supposed to possess, and, a lot of great answers spring up. The answers and the questioners seem mostly interested on qualities related to getting a better job, nailing some interview, things desired by boss or management, or improving your programming abilities. One thing that often gets blown over is the genuine consideration for what traits peers want. They don't much value things like you're one of those 'gets things done' people for the company, or you never miss a deadline, or your code is least painful to review and debug, or you're team player with fantastic leading abilities. They probably care more if you're helpful, are a refreshing person to talk to, you're fun to program in pair with, everybody wants you to review their code, or something of that nature. I, for one, would care that I come off to my peers as a pleasurable programmer to work with, as much as I care about my impression on my boss or management. Is this really significant, and if yes, what are the most desirable traits peers want from each other.

• In the Groove: PASS Board Year 1, Q3

  It's nine months into my first year on the PASS Board and I feel like I've found my rhythm. I've accomplished one of the goals I set out for the year and have made progress on others. Here's a recap of the last few months. Anti-Harassment Policy & Process Completed In April I began work on a Code of Conduct for the PASS Summit. The Board had several good discussions and various PASS members provided feedback. You can read more about that in this blog post. Since the document was focused on issues of harassment we renamed it the "Anti-Harassment Policy " and it was approved by the Board in August. The next step was to refine the guideliness and process for enforcement of the AHP. A subcommittee worked on this and presented an update to the Board at the September meeting. You can read more about that in this post, and you can find the process document here. Global Growth Expanding PASS' reach and making the organization relevant to SQL Server communities around the world has been a focus of the Board's work in 2012. We took the Global Growth initiative out to the community for feedback, and everyone on the Board participated, via Twitter chats, Town Hall meetings, feedback forums and in-person discussions. This community participation helped shape and refine our plans. Implementing the vision for Global Growth goes across all portfolios. The Virtual Chapters are well-positioned to help the organization move forward in this area. One outcome of the Global Growth discussions with the community is the expansion of two of the VCs from country-specific to language-specific. Thanks to the leadership in Brazil & Mexico for taking the lead here. I look forward to continued success for the Portuguese- and Spanish-language Virtual Chapters. Together with the Global Chinese VC PASS is off to a good start in making the VC's truly global. Virtual Chapters The VCs continue to grow and expand. Volunteers recently rebooted the Azure and Virutalization VCs, and a new  Education VC will be launching soon. Every week VCs offer excellent free training on a variety of topics. It's the dedication of the VC leaders and volunteers that make all this possible and I thank them for it. Board meeting The Board had an in-person meeting in September in San Diego, CA.. As usual we covered a number of topics including governance changes to support Global Growth, the upcoming Summit, 2013 events and the (then) upcoming PASS election.   I am a graphics designer. How long would it take to become fluent in Objective-c for Mac and/or iPhone app development, from no programming background? I want to quit my day job as a designer. • Is there an RSS feed of Ubuntu Release torrent files

  A lot of torrent search engines have the ability to provide an RSS feed of matches, allowing you to set up torrent programs to download items which are published on the feed. This is useful for watching releases of things. The problem with doing this through a random search engine for Ubuntu is that you usually get too many torrents as it picks up different custom versions, and other software with the name in the title/description. • How to pass GET parameters to rewritten URL?

  I have an .htaccess rewrite rule like this: RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENME} !-d RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^search/(.*)$ search.php?q=$1 What this does is, if someone visits http://www.mysite.com/search/test the URI that is really processed is http://www.mysite.com/search.php?q=test. Now, if I try to pass an extra random GET parameter to my rewritten URL, the parameter is ignored. So if I try to do visit here: http://www.mysite.com/search/whatever?extra=true The parameter extra is ignored. It doesn't seem to get passed at all. Can this problem be fixed? If so, how?

• Salaries in reverse engineering fields [closed]

  I bumped into an old friend at a conference and he told me he was now a consultant doing reverse engineering. I don't have much knowledge of this particular area, but this person (that I can't manage to get in touch with now) just casually mentioned that he was earning big bucks. I was hoping someone at SO may know of the salary range that a skilled and experienced employee/freelancer may earn in this area? I can't find much information on the web - small area maybe? I dunno. • Testing loses its effectiveness if all programmers don't use them

  Let's assume you are convinced that the extra time spent unit testing has merit and improves production. Does that still hold up when everyone working on the same code doesn't use them? This question makes me wonder if fixing tests that everyone doesn't use is a waste of time. If you correct a test so the new code will pass, you're assuming the new code is correct. The person updating the test better have a firm understanding of the reasoning behind the code change and decide if the test or the new code needs to be fixed. This much inconsistency in a team when it comes to testing is probably an indication of other problems as well. There is a certain amount of risk involved that someone else on the team will alter code that is covered by testing. Is this the point where testing becomes counter-productive?

• Tracking click conversions with Google Analytics

  Is there anyway I can use Google Analytics to track click conversions on a link? For example, if I have a link to www.a.com , is it possible for google to track the number of times that particular link was shown on my page and then track how many times it was really clicked? The problem is that I do not show the link to www.a.com every time the page loads. I am using a random function (server side) to generate a different link everytime. I would like Google Analytics to provide me with the click conversion for each of the links I choose to show the user. Thanks, Joel

• How to Disable the Auto-Complete Feature in Outlook 2013

  The Auto-Complete feature in Outlook 2013 automatically fills in names and email addresses for you when entering them in the To or Cc fields. Based on the characters you start to enter, Outlook displays a list of possible choices that match what you’ve entered. You can then either click the desired email address from the list or press Enter to insert the email address in the list. The Auto-Complete feature can save you time if you compose a lot of emails and have a lot of contacts in your address book. However, you do have to be careful when using the feature, so you don’t accidentally select the wrong email address and send an email to the wrong person. If you find the feature irritating and don’t want to use it, you can easily disable it. To disable the Auto-Complete feature, open Outlook and click the FILE tab.

• Securing iOS or Android Backend API

  I have an application that I am writing for both iOS and Android; this application will be served by a ReSTFUL API running on a cluster of servers on "the internets". I am curious how the rest of the world is going about securing their APIs so only specific applications running on iOS or Android can use these APIs. I could go the same route as other OAuth providers by providing a key/secret combination (2-legged OAuth), however, what do I do if I ever have to change these keys??? Do I create a new key/secret for every person that downloads the app???

• PHP security regarding login

  I have read a lot about PHP login security recently, but many questions on Stack Overflow regarding security are outdated. I understand bcrypt is one of the best ways of hashing passwords today. However, for my site, I believe sha512 will do very well, at least to begin with. (I mean bcrypt is for bigger sites, sites that require high security, right?) I´m also wonder about salting. Is it necessary for every password to have its own unique salt? Should I have one field for the salt and one for the password in my database table? What would be a decent salt today? Should I join the username together with the password and add a random word/letter/special character combination to it? Thanks for your help!

• Enable wifi on my computer - firmware missing

  I am attempting to set up a wireless network on 11.04, freshly download today. The router is on and working. However, I do not have a wifi "card" (which I am assuming is a little USB-type thing that allows internet access, but correct me if I am wrong) and every time I try to type in the MAC address and everything, nothing works. I also get the "firmware missing" error when I scroll over the signal strength, which I have tried looking up but have been unsuccessful with completely understanding it. I guess my main question is do I need another little device to be able to use wifi on my ubuntu? I do have an ethernet cable but another person is using it and I do not want to be tied down to that cable. the problem is that none of the wireless networks show up, however they show up when I go into Windows mode on my laptop. I get an error message at the top saying "firmware missing" which I have tried looking up but still have no straight answer for.

• Is it bad to have an "Obsessive Refactoring Disorder"?

  I was reading this question and realized that could almost be me. I am fairly OCD about refactoring someone else's code when I see that I can improve it. For example, if the code contains duplicate methods to do the same thing with nothing more than a single parameter changing, I feel I have to remove all the copy/paste methods and replace it with one generic one. Is this bad? Should I try and stop? I try not to refactor unless I can actually make improvements to the code performance or readability, or if the person who did the code isn't following our standard naming conventions (I hate expecting a variable to be local because of the naming standard, only to discover it is a global variable which has been incorrectly named)

• Dark themes in IDE with multiple monitors

  There has been numerous posts about developers that prefer a dark color scheme in their IDE. Most of the themes at studiostyl.es are dark themes. Back when I had a single monitor, I did enjoy using a dark theme since it was easier on the eyes. But now that I utilize multiple monitors, I find dark themes actually hurt my eyes. Most of the time I have my IDE open on one monitor and a browser/email/documentation open on my other monitors. Only my IDE has a dark theme and most of websites/documentation have a white background. This forces my eyes to constantly adjust between my dark IDE and the white website, which puts strain on my eyes. I'm sure I'm not the only person who tries to use a dark theme for the IDE and have multiple monitors. How do other people deal with this issue?

  The way I plan to use it is: Have people send SMS to a number to vote. On the backend (assuming that the data comes back to my Web server), I will display the voting results on my Web site. After say 10 minutes, I would like to press a button on my Web site so ONE of the people who sent an SMS earlier receive an SMS saying that person is a winner. I'm an ASP .Net developer, so I just need an API to code against. • VMWare Kernel Modules will not compile or update on Ubuntu 12.04

  Kernel Module Update was required when opening VMWare client (vmplayer) then following error occurs. Any idea would be appreciated. Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-NNN.log for details (Note: NNN looks like random numbers) On GUI that show progress of updating, "Virtual Netowork Device" show red flag appears.   When ever I am stuck with a particular problem, I search for a solution in Google. And then I try to understand the code and tweak it according to my requirement. For example recently I had asked a question Reading xml document in firefox in stack overflow. Soufiane Hassou gave me a link to w3schools, where I found a example on parsing xml document, I understood how the example works, but I copied the code and tweaked it according to my requirement, since I don't like typing much.   In case a person has many different social network profiles, what is the proper way of referring to those profiles in a work that is meant to be printed or may be viewed as an image? For example one owns the username "CoolCompany" on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and other websites. Should they provide a URL for each profile? for example: Facebook.com/CoolCompany Twitter.com/CoolCompany ... I often notice that in videos or on TV people may only use the logos but I believe it is not very useful, specially in case that the audience are unfamiliar with a social network... • Best C# database communication technique

  A few days ago I read a reply to a question where people said that the days of writing queries within your c# code are long gone. I'm not sure what the specific person meant with the comment but it got me thinking. At the company I'm currently working at we maintain an assembly containing all the queries to the database (let's call it Queries), this assembly is reference by a QueryService (Retrieve the correct queries) assembly which in turn is referenced by a UnitOfWork assembly (The database connector classes, we have different connector classes for SQL, MySQL etc.). We use these three assemblies to perform operations on our database and all queries/commands are written in our C# code. Is there a better way to communicate with the database and is there a better way to communicate with different database types?
