• What quality standards to consider for software development process?

  Hi, i'm looking for metrics/standards/normatives to evaluate a given "Software Development Process". I'm NOT looking to evaluate the SOFTWARE itself (trough SQUARE and such), i'm trying to evaluate software development PROCESS. So, my question is if you could give me some pointers to find this standard, considering that "evaluation objetives" would be documentation quality, how good is the customer relation, how efective is the process, etc. Very much like a ISO 9000, and like CMMI on a sense, but much lightweight and concrete and process oriented, not company oriented. Please help, i'm trying to stablish the advantages of our development process as formal as i can.

The game has a unique engine, written on the need for the game, graphics, sound, map editor, web site etc. As it happens in the play mmorpg we can develop the characters, monsters. We can fight with other characters or to establish cooperation in solving the challenges. We can fight using own monsters, or throwing their own cards with spells. • Do employers prefer software engineering over CS majors?

  I'm in grad school at a university that was one of the first to have a software engineering accredited program. My undergrad is in CS. An employer recently recruited at our university and hired 5 SE majors. None of them were CS. Do employers prefer software engineering majors? The reason I ask is because I can focus on many different areas during my graduate studies and really want to take the classes that will help me land a great job. Right now I'm either going to use CUDA and parallelize an advanced ray-tracer for a graduate project or do research on non-photo-realistic rendering in augmented reality. Pursuing these would leave very little SE classes in my schedule. If I went the software engineering route, I would probably either do research into data-oriented programming or software design complexity. Sometimes I think when I'm 40 and look back will it matter at all? For some reason I'm thinking not.

• How to change fonts using gnome-tweak-tool?

  As a non-techie type user, I've managed to find the "Advanced Settings" option in the "other" menu listing, which is good (sort of). In the past, I've routinely installed the windows fonts from my windows partition. Now even though I have the msttcorefonts package installed, and all of the .ttf windows fonts installed (as far as I can tell), it doesn't matter whether I log out and back in (which in the past has brought up some of the stuff I've wanted installed), or even if I just restart the Ubuntu completely from boot, none of them are listed. So how do I make the gnome tweek tool see the directory with all the fonts in it please ?

• Environment naming standards in software development?

  My project is currently suffering from environment naming issues. Different people have different assumptions as to what environments should be named or what the names designate, and it's causing confusion when discussing them. I've done a bit of research and I haven't found any standards out there. The terms include "Local", "Sand", "Dev", "Test", "User", "QA", "Staging" and "Prod" (plus a few more that different people have asked about) I'm not looking for just opinions, though if there's one out there that "everyone" has I'll take it - I'm trying to find definitions advanced by some sort of authority, even if it's unofficial. Here's the environments we currently use: Environment on the developer's PC Shared Environment where developers directly upload code to self-test Shared Environment where standards and functionality are tested by QA people Shared Environment where completed and QA-checked code is approved by project requesters Environment that mirrors the final environment as a final check and to prepare for deployment Final Environment where code is in use I know what I'd call them, but is there some sort of standard on this? • Google Analytics Goal Tracking for Sub-Domains?

  I am trying to track goals in Google Analytics for a website that has the goal URL on a sub-domain. The main domain for example is: domain.com and the sub-domain is my.domain.com. I have Google Analytics configured to track domains and all sub-domains and I've eve set up an advanced filter so I can see traffic to my sub-domains in Analytics. However, in goal tracking, you're supposed to put in the website URL after the front (so if it were domain.com/conversions/ you'd put in just /conversions/). However, since for me it would be my.domain.com/conversions/, how would I input that URL into Analytics to track? Would Analytics automatically determine the URL to be on the sub-domain? Thanks!

• Buy vs. Build - FTP Service

  We have a need to FTP files that are generated by our system, so we're trying to decide whether we should spend the time to build something that meets our criteria (relatively easy, .NET has FTP functionality built in, among other more advanced libs from 3rd parties). Or if we should buy something off the shelf. Our requirements are roughly: Must be able to trigger a file send programmatically Needs to retry N number of times (configurable) Queryable status of FTP requests Callback on completion or fail of an FTP request I don't need to be sold on the relative simplicity of building something like that for myself. However I do want to do the due diligence of seeing what products are available ... because if something does exist that matches the requirements above, I wouldn't mind paying for it :-) Any thoughts or links would be greatly appreciated. • What is the supposed productivity gain of dynamic typing?

  I often heard the claim that dynamically typed languages are more productive than statically typed languages. What are the reasons for this claim? Isn't it just tooling with modern concepts like convention over configuration, the use of functional programming, advanced programming models and use of consistent abstractions? Admittedly there is less clutter because the (for instance in Java) often redundant type declarations are not needed, but you can also omit most type declarations in statically typed languages that usw type inference, without loosing the other advantages of static typing. And all of this is available for modern statically typed languages like Scala as well. So: what is there to say for productivity with dynamic typing that really is an advantage of the type model itself?

  I've been programming with Javascript for a few years now, and I guess I'm okay at it. I can solve pretty much any problem I come across, and while my solutions may not be that great, they work. However, I want to become a better Javascript programmer. I'd like to learn all the best-practices, tricks of the trade, things to avoid, and anything else I should know so that my code will be 100% optimized and as readable as possible. How do I do that? I realize this question has been loosely asked before here, but the OP was something of beginner. I want to get into the more advanced side of Javascript programming with this question. Is this possible or am I just being way too impatient? Do I just need to spend loads of time programming?

• Why do I have to choose between "management" and "technical" tracks in my career?

  I was recently laid off, and although I found a new gig I'm a bit frustrated with how career tracks work in the land of software development. I really love doing a bit of everything: coding, testing, architect(ing), leadership/management, customer contact, requirements gathering, staff development, etc. Software companies, however, want me to fit into a niche: I'm either a coder, a tester, or a manager. When I try to explain to them that I'm best when I'm doing all of those at once, they seem very confused. I'm sympathetic to their interests, but at the same time frustrated that the industry works this way. Any advice? Do I just need to get with the program, so to speak?

• Adding an LOV to a query parameter (executeWithParams)

  I showed in the past how you can use the executeWithParams operation to build your own query page to filter a view object to show specific rows. I also showed how you can make the parameter fields display as drop down lists of values (selectOneChoice). However this week someone asked me if you can have those parameter fields use the advanced LOV component. Well if you just try and drag the parameter over, you'll see that the LOV option is not there as a drop option. But with a little bit of hacking around you can achieve this. (without actual Java coding). Here is a quick demo:

I'm looking for a free or low cost web host. I tried 50webs.com but their server breaks down. So as not to cause debate, I am also just looking for links to good information sources for web hosting if just finding a good web host is too general. I currently only use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript though I'm considering learning PhP and other more advanced languages to step up my game.

Personally, I spent my week on sunny Taylor street at the Java Certification Zone in Taylor Street Cafe.  I talked to over 100 people last week about certification and handed out over 65 ribbons. The Oracle Certification Lounge at OpenWorld, at Moscone South enjoyed more than 200 visitors over the week. Both locations offered scheduled speakers and available experts, in addition to answers to all of your certification questions and account help when needed. But I have another Ubuntu based distribution on my laptop (BackTrack linux), which is also 10.04, but it has the b43 driver installed and the overall performance is MUCH better. So I would like to install it on this OS too, but even google didn't help me. So my question is how to install the latest b43 driver on my Ubuntu?

While searching about this i found this awesome website Ginwiz; my website can be modified into an mobile friendly site without any additional coding. But i find two disadvantages with this website (free version) 1)We cant add our domain to it with out upgrading (i dont have enough money to pay for it) 2)We can only "Advanced edit" one page Do you know any website which is similar to Ginwiz but can use our domain address instead of theirs (in free version).
