• Problem with Lenovo x200s Wifi under Ubutu Karmic

  Hi, I have just gotten my Lenovo X200s laptop, and I am install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on it. The installation went through without a hitch, but I can't get my wifi to work. lspci | grep Network Produces the following results: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10) The weird part is that when I turn the wifi hardware stitch on and off on the side of the laptop, I get the following printed in /var/log messages: Dec 30 23:24:48 temp-laptop kernel: [ 213.432302] usb 4-2: USB disconnect, address 2 Dec 30 23:24:52 temp-laptop kernel: [ 217.276310] usb 4-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 Dec 30 23:24:52 temp-laptop kernel: [ 217.441759] usb 4-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Does Ubuntu think my wifi card is a USB device? • I install Ubuntu 13.10 and reboot and im on KDE desktop?

  Hi I'm Jacob and I have no idea what's going on. I installed Ubuntu 13.10 today and was playing around with it for a while and dl'd a bunch of apps from software center and stuff. Eventually I installed steam and (finally) got it working. I downloaded TF2 and had some weird issue where the screen got so distorted to the point I could not play. So I dl'd a driver for my graphics card from the additional drivers app (or whatever it's called) and when it was done I restarted my computer (because it said to.) When the PC booted up it loaded the KDE desktop and I have no idea why. I had unity before I rebooted. Ubuntu 13.10 is the only OS installed on my PC, and I still have all the apps that I downloaded, but I kinda like unity (I started using Ubuntu after they switched to unity) and want it back. • Custom resolution - Windows 7 - no drivers

  I'm having some problems with my VGA card. When I enable my VGA drivers and boot windows up they crash and I get message that the problem occured with atimdag.sys drivers or smth like that. I'm gettin BSOD all the time, unless I go to control panel and I disable drivers manually. I can live with disabled drivers just fine(I'm already used to it in quite some time) but the annoying problem is my display resolution. I can not set my res to anything higher than 1024x768. I was wondering if it's possible to change resolution to my native displays resolution without drivers? I've been trying to find something that would work w/o drivers, but with no luck(I've found many of solutions how to do it with working drivers, but as you know I can not enable my drivers). So please, maybe someone could help me and tell me how to set custom resolution?

• Ultrium 3 tape drive shoe-shining, 3Mb/s: and it's not the cable

  I have a HP 960 Ultrium 3 tape drive. Since I got it, (second hand, £90) I've been experiencing shoe-shining. Writing with tar in Linux, I average about 3Mb/s write speed. I've tried replacing both the SCSI card and the cable now, both of which made no difference at all. A curiuos observation I have made is that the write rate is not consistent. Sometimes it will write for over a minute without shoeshining, but more often, just a few seconds. I've also tried several tapes, different source drives, and even writing from Windows Backup, to no avail.

• Resizing RAID 1 Array on Dell PowerEdge with Perc 4/Di & Windows SBS 2003

  I have a Dell PowerEdge 2600 with Perc 4/Di RAID card and Windows SBS 2003 installed. The original system drive was a set of 17GB drives in a RAID 1 array. Over the years, these drives have failed (individually) and been replaced by a set of 73GB drives, but the RAID array is still 17GB in size. Is there a safe procedure to resize the RAID 1 array to use the entire 73GB without destroying/corrupting the data on the array? The Perc documentation mentions a Reconstruct option with Online Capacity Expansion, but is a woefully short on the exact details. Has anyone performed this procedure successfully (or unsuccessfully)? What were the steps? Are there any gotchas I should watch out for?

  Hi, I have an old PC at home which is mainly used by my Mom or my brother just to browse the web and maybe open some PDFs / docs. Till now I had Win2000 installed, but it performs very poorly. So I thought about installing Linux on it. Could someone give me some suggestions for a leightweight Linux distribution which works well?? Is standard Ubuntu too heavy?? • ethernet not working

  i wanted to know how do i setup an ethernet connection on a laptop,my isp gave me a telephone like cable which fits the ethernet port. i guess its the ethernet cable. when i connect it, nothing happens on the pc the ethernet card(realtek pcie gbe family controller) says cable not plugged in. i am using wired connection for first time.the system is completely stable with softwares .the drivers are also automatically updated through a manufacturer installed update system. the isp says there must be some sort of light on the port. whats the problem? how do get it working.

• SuperMicro IPMI through OpenBSD PF Firewall

  I'm trying to access a SuperMicro IPMI card that is behind an OpenBSD bridged firewall. A couple pieces of information: The OpenBSD firewall itself has a SuperMicro IPMI that I can access across the internet. The IPMI I'm trying to reach can be reached from behind the firewall. My gateway does arp request the IPMI and it does appear to respond (this is from the external interface of the firewall) 16:57:45.548892 arp who-has ipminame tell gwname 16:57:45.549500 arp reply ipminame is-at ipmimac But when I make a request to the IPMI IP from outside the firewall the external interface of the firewall shows no traffic with the IPMI ip as its destination. Any idea what might be causing this problem? Is there something about IPMI traffic that my gateway wouldn't like (the gateway is provided by my colocation provider so I can't easily debug it).

  I am developing an application on a Linux embedded board (runs Debian) e.g. Raspberry Pi, Beagle Board/Bone, or olimex. The boards works on an environment that the electricity is cut unexpectedly (it is far complicated to place PSU, etc.) and it would happen every day couple times. I wonder if the unexpected power cuts would cause crash/problem on the Linux Operation System? If it is something that I should worry, what would you suggest to prevent the damages on OS against the unexpected power cuts? PS. The application needs to writes some data to the storage medium (SD card), I think it would not be suitable to mount it as read-only.

  I'm having a complete 'mare of a time trying to use my schools Digital Blue cameras. We've got the model 3 ones, but can't find the driver disc and using the Windows Hardware Installation Wizard gets me no where! Can you help me to find the driver? When I've used it at my old school it had a piece of software called the Digital Movie Creator, which I've heard you can use to make stop-motion films, which is what I want to do! • My 5.1 audio system not working properly when I connect to Internet

  I just bought a Genuis 5005 5.1 audio system, and I have an issue with it: It won't work properly when I get on the Internet (the central speaker isn't working). I also bought an Asus Xonar DG 5.1 sound card which works perfectly. I installed it and also installed the driver for it. When I play music/videos from my hard drive, all the speakers work fine, but when I connected to Internet to play videos/music, the center speaker won't work. How can I fix this issue?

• Offline installer for Windows 8?

  I have a computer repair service, and can see a few more people wanting Windows 8 updowngraded. Because of New Zealand's internet speeds it takes 1-2 hours to run the download part of the official Windows 8 upgrade tool. This means I have to go back to people the next day. I would like to keep an "offline" version of the Windows 8 upgrade tool on my flash drive, so I can avoid this inconvenience. Obviously it would still require a legit credit card etc, it just comes with the download part not needed. I cannot find such a tool. Does one exist?

• Linux and GeForce 8400 dual monitor

  I'm trying to install a linux distribution on my PC. I have a GeForce 8400 GS with two connected monitors. I tried with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both 64 and 32 bit) and the live cd cannot boot properly. I don't get a visible error on Ubuntu, it simply hangs up during the boot. With Fedora I get this error: [drm] Modeset on unsupported output type [drm] Table 0x0000 not found for 1/1 using first I tried to disconnect one of the two monitor and was able to install on my HD and boot from there, but if I try to connect the second monitor again I cannot boot. Do I need to install something else? (a driver for my video card for example).

• Chromebook, Crouton & “External Drive” is it possible to rename the folder?

  I have a Chromebook where I installed Crouton. I have plugged an SD Card and Chromebook detects it as "External Drive". In my Ubuntu instance, it's located at /media/removable/External Drive/ but this poses some problems for executing some applications I have installed on that external drive. In order to fix the problem, I need to remove all the spaces in the path, which is located in "External Drive". My question is simple, is it possible to move/rename the mount name "External Drive" to something else and doing it automatically at every mount/boot ? Thank you for your help !

• VirtualBox networking problem, host XP, guest Debian

  Hi, I'm trying to set up a development environment in a virtual machine on my laptop, with debian os. I have both lan and wlan available on the host machine, yet I can't connect to the internet using either. As I said the host OS is windows XP and the guest OS will be the latest Debian, we downloaded the business card net install so we need internet access from the beginning, besides we need the virtual machine to be visible on the local network (for my fellow developers). We tried host-only networking, NAT, bridging, with proxy (the local network uses a proxy to connect to the internet) and without proxy, nothing seems to work. What else can we do? Thanks a lot.

• Enabling 8021q on a nic

  Hi, I'm trying to get a vlan interface on a bonded nic (Centos 5.5) and whilst the interface has been very happily created with vconfig I'm seeing no traffic on it at all. Running tcpdump and tshark on the underlying eth0 I see no sign at all of vlan tags in the traffic, and I'm wondering if there's somethign I'm missing on the server side as the network dept say they are sending me the tagged data. I've got the 8021q module loaded, however under lsmod it shows it's only being used by the cxgb3 module, for an unused onboard iSCSI card, whereas my nics (on an HP DL380 G7) are driven by bnx2 and e1000e modules. Should these modules be listing 8021q as used module? should I have something conrete in /etc/modprobe.conf? Thanks Chris

• Program shortcuts disappearing in Windows Mobile 2003, any way to get them back?

  I have a WM2003 device with some programs installed on it and a full backup created and saved to a SD card. If the device runs out of charge for some time (or the battery removed) everything is reseted back to defaults, so the custom programs and configs are gone. When this happens I used to restore the full backup to put everything back to normal again. But I've recently installed TomTom Navigator 7 and for some reason, its shortcut in the "Programs" section is not saved when creating a full backup (with the eBackup app provided) and the installation doesn't create a shortcut in the main screen (as version 6 used to do). Is there any way to make this shortcut persistent? Is there any way to create custom shortcuts in the programs section or in the main screen (preferably)? • unable to install new versions of linux on my PC

  I have an MSI-RC410 motherboard with onboard ATI Radeon XPress 200 series Graphics card. I have used OpenSuse-11.0 on my PC for over an year. but when I tried to upgrade to OpenSuse-11.1, I managed to install it only to find that several features were missing. for example /dev/cdrom was missing. Also install DVD of Fedora 11 did not work. I have also tried Ubuntu-9.10 live cd. When I boot from the CD i get the initramfs command prompt. Still able to install old versions of these OSs. What is the reason for this behavior? Does it have to do anything with the new version of the linux kernel not being compatible with my hardware? What should i do to install new versions of Linux?

• Any way to stop VMWare workstation from dropping SSH connections?

  I have VMWare workstation 8 with a few Linux guests. I have had problems maintaining an active SSH connection to my VMs when they are in bridged mode. I first read that the onboard realtek network cards were not well supported so I bought a Intel Pro/1000 GT card. This supposedly had support. But this made no difference. Connections via SSH are active for about the first 3 minutes then hang and die. I have changed the TCP Checksum offload on the Intel and Realtek NICs, but this only works some of the time and even then not for very long. The best I could do was about 20 minutes before the connection was dropped. Any ideas?

• Fullscreen Video stutters on second monitor laptop

  Fullscreen video on my new 1080p monitor is choppy when it comes from my laptop. The same video plays when not full screen. This goes for all video(Flash/MKV, etc), regardless of video resolution. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series card in my Thinkpad Edge, Turion X2 2GHz. The computer plays 1080p fine. Things I've tried: Updating Drivers Switching cables Turning Hardware Acceleration Changing video players process priority Rebooting Turning of laptop screen Turning off unused processes Nothing Works. What is the likelyhood that my laptop cannot power a 1920x1280 display?

• Windows 7 Natively on Mac OS X Bootcamp, Airport Wifi Unable To Connect....

  Hello! I am using a brand new MacBook Pro. I am running a copy of Windows 7 natively via bootcamp (No use of Virtual Machine Software at all). However the only way I can get Windows to connect to the internet is via ethernet, as opposed to the Macs Airport card picking up the wireless. It just refuses to connect, and gives me a limited access status. Any ideas!? I've run Windows XP natively via bootcamp and I had a few issues with the network constantly dropping out, however I blamed that on the drivers and the general shiteness of XP.... Help greatly appreciated.

• Missing eth0 configuration file

  I have two servers both running Scientific Linux 6 on the same network. Since I want SSH access to both of them, I want to give them both static IPs so I can setup port forwarding and not worry how my router assigns local IPs. I found that I need to edit the configuration file /etc/network-scripts/ifcng-eth0, however that file does not exist. The network card works fine, and I am able to ssh as long as I access the router and find the local ip. Can I simply make my own configuration file, or did I miss some step in configuring the system that I need to complete?

• PC case and PSU screw question....

  Hi, I have maybe a funny one to ask.... To this Christmass I bought new PC. When I started to asseble it, I found that my case (Artic Cooling Silentium T11) has 12 screws for HDD, DVD etc, and 6 screws for the expansion cards. Well, first thing that surprised me was, why only 6 screws for expansion card, when case has actually 7 slots. And second, what are PSU screws supposed to some with? The PSU, Case or nothing? Becouse neighter PSU or Case had them. PSU is Evolve Storm 600W. Well, I know case and PSU are not some high end devices, but still, would it hurt them to add 1 screw for expansion cards and 4 for PSU? So, my question is, is this situation normall, or which one (Case or PSU) does normally screws come with? Thanks.

• Computer won't power on

  Was working fine for over a year, now won't boot. LEDs on the GFX card and one on the MOBO labeled PWR glow when plugged in, but nothing happens when I push power and shorting switch pins does nothing either. If I pop out the CMOS battery and put it back in then try the fans lurch but nothing happens. Shorting the 15 and 16 pins turns the PSU on, and when the 24pin connector is attached to the MOBO it will start up briefly then stop. If I plug in the CPU header it returns to what I described, no power but will lurch after replacing the CMOS battery. Should I be shopping for a new PSU or is there another problem maybe?

• make vnc server listen on guest's ip address

  My host system has the IP 192.168.0.250. Now I want to create a kvm guest using a tap device (so the network card of the guest just acts like a "real" one). The guest has a static ip 192.168.0.249 which it setups on his own (no dhcp). To connect to the guest using VNC I can to use the host's IP. So far everything works fine. Now I wonder how I can make the VNC server to listen on the guest's IP address, so I can use the guest's IP address to connect using my vnc client. Of course I cannot use -vnc 192.168.0.249:1 as this IP is not active on the host and so fails with Cannot assign requested address. Can this be done with tap networking at all? If not, how to get it working?
