• sql db problem with windows authentication

  Have a SQL Server 2008 db which I connect to the Windows Authentication .. has worked good for 7-8 months .. but now when I come to work today it no longer worked to connect, without that I had done something Error message was: Can not open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'Jimmy-PC \ Jimmy'. where the first is the computer name and the second is the user. The problem seems to be that it tries to connect to the default database. Have tried to change it without success .. I do not have sql server management tools for sql 2008 but only to 2005, someone who has similar experience? who have not touched anything said over the weekend and it worked last Friday without any problems.

• Visual Studio Multi-Targeting (maintaining backwards compatibility)

  I know in Visual Studio 2008 you can target a specific framework with your projects, but from what I have been told if you open a project originally created in Visual Studio 2003 or 2005 in Visual Studio 2008, it requires you to upgrade the project to a 2008 project to work on it. Does Visual Studio 2010 have this same type of restriction? It would be very nice being able to use features of 2010 when working in our projects that target different frameworks, but we do not want to force all of our developers to upgrade in order to continue working in these projects.

  I create a c# class library project named: testVcBuild, then use vcbuild.exe to build the project in the command line like: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\vcpackages>vcbuild testVcBuild.csproj "Debug|Win32" the out put shows: Microsoft (R) Visual C++ Project Builder - Command Line Version 9.00.21022 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. I found that the vcbuild.exe always call the "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Csc.exe /noconfig .." the problem is how can I change the Framework version to v3.5? I found my project works fine with the v3.5 but it's broken in the v2.0.50727. I try to use msbuild.exe instead of vcbuild.exe, everything goes well, I just don't understand how can I make it with the vcbuild.exe? win7+vs2005+vs2008 installed.

• pyODBC and Unicode Problem

  Hey guys, I'm working with pyODBC communicate with a MS SQL 2005 Express server. The table to which i'm trying to save the data consists of nvarchar columns. query = u"INSERT INTO tblPersons (name, birthday, gender) VALUES('" query = query + name + u"', '" query = query + birthday + u"', '" query = query + gender + u"')" cur.execute(query ) The variables name, birthrday and gende are read from an Excel file and they are Unicode strings. When I execute the query and either look at the table with SQL Server Management Studio or execute a query that fetches the data that was just inserted, all the data that was written in a non-English languages turn into question marks. The data that was written in English is preserved and appears in the table in the correct way. I tried adding CHARSET=UTF16 to my connection string, but had no luck with that. I can use UTF-8 which works fine but as a working convention, I need all the data saved in my DB to be UTF16. Thanks!

• Problem with extern keyword in C++

  What's the difference between the following two declarations? I thought they were equivalent, but the first sample works, and the second does not. I mean it compiles and runs, but the bitmap display code shows blank. I have not stepped through it yet, but am I missing something obvious? GUI_BITMAP is a simple structure describing a bitmap. This is for VC++ 2005, but I think it fails in VC++ 2008 also. Scratching my head on this one...   I once built a very good web application in ASP (classic) back in 2001 and extensively used XmlHttpRequest object in it. (I was lucky that the clients were only using IE, and only IE supported this object at that time). Then later when people started talking about AJAX in 2005, It felt good to have used something ahead (or early) of its time. Well, maybe this does not qualify to be listed as something done ahead of its time. Which programming technology/technique/practice have you done that was ahead of this time. Each time I try to call the ListChildren method I get an insuffient permission exception. The code is: ReportingService2005SoapClient rService = new ReportingService2005SoapClient(); CatalogItem[] cItems = null; rService.ListChildren("/", false, out cItems); I added the ASP.net (iusr) account into the local admin group on the PC and still get the exception.   Hi, I recently started to use AjaxControlToolkit v3.0.30930.0 in my application together with System.Web.Extension 3.5. My development environment is Visual Studio 2005, .NET Framework 2.0 and the development language is C#. The Ajax control I used is the ModalPopupExtender. I also used the UpdatePanel and updateprogress controls. Everything is working fine on my development machine. But I got a problem after I deployed the application to a server which does not have System.Web.Extension 3.5 installed, which is understandable. My question is, can the ajax controls I used work without System.Web.Extension 3.5? Say I revert the ajaxcontroltoolkit back to version 1.0.61025.0? I don't have the option to install .NET 3.5 as yet. Thank you for your help. John

  Hi, The question is about Armenian. I'm using sql server 2005, collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, data mostly is in Armenian and we can't use unicode. I tested on ms sql 2008 with a windows collation for armenian language ( Cyrillic_General_100_ ), I have found here, ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188046.aspx ) but it didn't help. I have a function, that orders hex values and a lower function, which takes each char in each string and converts it to it's lower form, but it's not acceptable solution, it works really slow, calling that functions on every column of a huge table. Is there any solution for this issue not using unicode and not working with hex values manually?

  Hello all, I have a web application which needs to allow admins to create content pages. I'd rather not re-invent the wheel here. What I need is something like Joomla, but it doesn't have to be a full fledged CMS. I need a framework or a library that I can use with my current web application which will present a nice interface for admin to create sections/pages, and then edit and style them just like joomla. My web application is built on .Net 3.5 and Sql Server 2005. Any ideas?

  Hopefully some Custom Control Designers/Builders can help I'm attempting to build my first custom control that is essential a client detail collection form. There are to be a series of elements to this form that require various styles applied to them. Ideally I'd like the VS 2005/2008 properties interface to be able to apply the CSSClass as it does at the control level, i.e. with a dropdown list of available CSS Clases. • TFS: cannot setup up new build

  I have a problem that is described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2146198/tfs-cannot-set-up-new-build I use Visual Studio 2008. Unfortunately, the solution provided there, didn't help. I tried to remove and add again my TFS server - no help. Also, it's not a problem with security policies or lack of proper right, because I can initiate a new build, with the same user through Visual Studio 2005, also installed on my computer. In addition my colleagues have no problems at all. If someone else have experienced similar problem - I will appreciate any help !

• Comparing 2 columns in the same table with the "Like" function

  I'm trying to come up with a way to query the values in two different columns in the same table where the result set will indicate instances where the value of columnB doesn't contain the value of columnA. For example, my "Nodes" table contains columns "NodeName" and "DNS". The values should look similar to the following: NodeName DNS Router1 Router1.mydomain.com I want to run a query to show which rows have a DNS value that does not contain (or begin with) the value of the NodeName field. I think the query should function something similar to the following, but obviously I'm missing something with regard to the use of "Like" in this situation. SELECT NodeName, DNS WHERE DNS NOT LIKE 'NodeName%' I'm using SQL Server 2005, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... :)

  Hi All, Is there a way to update the PDB file with the new source location ? I have a project which links to some libraries which are built on another machine and are debug build with the PDB file. I cannot put a breakpoint in the files which are compiled in the libs. These libs take more than 4 hours to build so I dont want to buid them on my machine. For more information, contact your system administrator." When I RDP into the server and try Microsoft CRM Workflow Manager/Monitor with http or https connectivity, it doesn't work. "The specified Microsoft CRM server is not responding. This might happen if it is currently unavaliable, it is not a Microsoft CRM server, or you are not a valid user. Contact your sys-admin." This is a Microsoft CRM v3.0 / Microsoft SQL server 2005 box, Active directory is on a seperate box.. When I right click Microsoft CRM Worlkflow Service, properties, log on: it shows "crmtestuser" and a password. I did not RDP or try logging in as that crmtestuser, but I am Admin... Could this be a clue? What can I try?

  A group of us are working on a project which we built with .NET 3.5 in Visual Studio 2008. I want to test out Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 (well, mainly for WPF 4). I am just wondering if I install VS 2010, will I still be able to use VS 2008 to open the first project. I know when I open older projects made in VS 2003/2005, I get an upgrade wizard. I do not want to upgrade the first project to 2010, since that would probably mean every one else has to use it too. I have not done this before, is it possible to run both versions of Visual Studio, where each version opens its own projects (this may not even be an issue, but I just wanted someone to confirm this, so that I don't spend a lot of time trying to undo changes)?

• console windows not close after stopping program

  Hello, Visual Studio 2005 C++ Windows XP Pro I have a sample application that I am testing, that links with boost libraries. However, the program runs ok. However, when I try and stop the program by clicking the 'Stop Debugging' button. The program ends, but the console window remains open. So I have many of them, as during my testing I am starting and stopping the application. Even when I try and close it by clicking the close button it has no affect. And it doesn't seem to appear under task manager when the program ends. The only way I can close them if I reboot windows. I am thinking it might be a thread that has not closed, and maybe that is keeping the console windows open. Many thanks for any advice,

• SQL Server Mutliple Joins Taxing CPU

  I have a stored procedure on SQL server 2005. It is pulling from a Table function, and has two joins. When the query is run using a load test it kills the CPU 100% across all 16 cores! I have determined that removing one of the joins makes the query run fine, but both taxes the CPU. Select SKey From dbo.tfnGetLatest(@ID) a left join [STAGING].dbo.RefSrvc b on a.LID = b.ESIID left join [STAGING].dbo.RefSrvc c on a.EID = c.ESIID Any help is appreciated, note the join is happening on the same table in a different database on the same server.

  Can anyone point me in the direction of how I could get a NUnit test to run a .sql file to Create / Setup a database. I know about the the TestFixtureSetUp and TestFixtureTearDown attributes / methods in NUnit. So I KNOW how to call methods before and after all or each unit tests. I'm just unsure of how to load and execute the contents of a .sql file agains a SQL Server 2005 database programatically. Any examples? This is part of our TDD / CI.   I need to deploy the language packs for the ReportViewer 2010 control (the english one is installed and working perfectly). Before, with ReportViewer 2008 and 2005, all the supported laguages were available on the MS downloads site. I can't seem to find them for the RC of 2010 -- are they available anywhere? From MSDN: To use the localized version of the ReportViewer control redistributable that comes with Visual Studio, do the following: 1.Run ReportViewer.exe. 2.Navigate to the folder that contains the language pack you want to use. Language pack folders are located at %PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\BootStrapper\Packages\ReportViewer\. 3.Run ReportViewerLP.exe. Is there a generic language pack for VS 2010 RC that would have the localized report viewers as well?

  I'm maintaining a .Net 2.0 application using Visual Studio 2008. When the application was built, it was originally in Visual Studio 2003 and made use of the System.ComponentModel.Component class for data access. You can drag and drop commands, connections, etc onto the designer surface of the component. In 2008, the data access classes don't "stick" to the component. I.e., the code for the command does not get generated in the class. when did this change? 2005? is there a replacement for this behavior, perhaps using the db pro edition? Thanks.
