• unable to connect to remote sql server from SHDSL router

  Got a new leased line network to our office that came with a SHDSL router (Watson). Currently, we are unable to use Sql Server management studio to connect to remote Sql databases. It errors out saying A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 64) I logged into the Watson management panel and unblocked all the ports for TCP traffic (specified the range as 0 to 60000 and UDP as well - this include 1443 required for connecting to SQL Server). The router is the only thing that has changed. We are able to connect to it from other networks just fine. Is there something we are missing here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• .NET TreeView causes application to crash when trying to check Parent node

  I have a TreeView with check boxes, and when a user checks a child node, I want to go up the tree and check each parent. However, for some reason my application blows up whenever I touch the parent node. For the nodes in my tree, I've extended TreeNode to create my own objects with some data that I need to store in them, but I still reference them as TreeNodes when checking/unchecking. • New wxpython controls not displaying until resize

  I have created a custom control (based on a panel) in wxPython that provides a list of custom controls on panel within it. The user needs to be able to add rows at will and have those rows displayed. I'm having trouble getting the new controls to actually appear after they are added. I know they are present, because they appear after a resize of the frame, or if I add them before Show() is called on the frame. I've convinced myself it's something basic, but I can't find the mistake. The add function looks like this: def addRow(self, id, reference, page, title, note): newRow = NoteListRow(self.listPanel, id, reference, page, title, note) self.listSizer.Add(newRow, flag=wx.EXPAND | wx.LEFT) self.rows.append(newRow) if len(self.rows) == 1: self.highliteRow(newRow) self.Refresh() self.Update() return newRow I assume I'm missing something about how refresh and update are supposed to behave, so even a good extended reference on those would likely be helpful.

• Cookies ignored on Apache/Magento installation

  I'm running a Magento based website store on Linux/Apache. In order that user logins are maintained, I've set my cookie lifetime to be close to two years. The cookies are sent out with the right times, I can see them in my browsers. When I visit the site from a previously logged-in browser after about a day, the user is logged out. I can still see the cookies, with their extended life, present in the browser. Where should I start looking to get to the bottom of this issue?

• Prevent mapping all public members of a class in Fluent NHibernate

  I have a class generated from a WSDL that has a bunch of public properties and a public event. I'm extending this class with my own and adding some properties to it. All of my own properties are declared virtual, but the base class properties are not virtual. I'm using Fluent NHibernate's ClassMap to map only the properties from my extended class. How do I prevent (Fluent)NHibernate from trying to persist all the base class's public members? • How to set which IP to use for a HTTP request?

  This is probably a silly question. I'm doing some http requests using wget from the command line, and I want those connections to be made through one specific IP of the 4 IPs my server has. Those http requests go to one specific range of IPs so I only want those to be routed differently. The 4 interfaces in my server are eth0, eth0:0, eth0:1, eth0:2. I tried with the following command: route add -net 192.164.10.0/24 dev eth0:0 But when I see the routing table it says: Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 192.164.10.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 The interface is set to eth0 not eth0:0 as my command says. What am I doing wrong?

• Is the cooling fan on a 2004 graphics card really necessary?

  I have an old GeForce 6600 card in my computer, circa 2004. Recently the fan has started playing up and making loud irritating noises. I've tried oiling it with no luck. This is the second fan I've put on the card, the stock one broke ages ago. Is a card this old really likely to need a cooling fan or can I remove it altogether? It has a decent heatsink on the chip but there's not a lot of airflow in that part of the box. Edit: I should add that I seem to remember most mid range graphics cards at the time I bought that didn't have fans (pretty sure they had heatsinks only), which is why I'm wondering.

  I have an Ubuntu VPS that I use for practice and deploying prototypes as I am a python developer. I recently started teaching my self sys admin tasks, like installing OpenLDAP. I happened to turn off the ufw firewall for just a minute, and when I ran an netstat command, I saw a foreign ip connected to ssh that I traced to china. I'd like to know a few things: 1) Is there any good network intrusion detection software, such that if any IP that's outside a specific range connects to the VPN, I can be notified? -- I am thinking about scripting this, but I'm pretty sure there's something useful out there and I believe in the wisdom of crowds. 2) How did this person gain access to my server? Is it because my firewall was down? Or is it because they browsed my LDAP directory and from there figured out a way to connect (there was a clear text password in the tree but it wasn't one used by the server's sshd)?

• Flickering when repainting a JPanel inside a JScrollPAne

  I'm having a problem with repainting a JPanel inside a JScrollPane. Basically, I'm just trying to 'wrap' my existing EditPanel (it originally extended JPanel) into a JScrollPane. It seems that the JPanel updates too often (mass flickering). How would I stop this from happening? I tried using the setIgnoreRepaint() but it didn't seem to do anything. Will this current implementation work or would I need to create another inner class to fine-tune the JPanel I'm using to display graphics?   I have a code snippet like this class A(object): class b: def print_hello(self): print "Hello world" b = property(b) And I want to override the inner class 'b'(please dont worry about the lowercase name) behaviour. Say, I want to add a new method or I want to change an existing method, like: class C(A): class b(A.b): def print_hello(self): print "Inner Class: Hello world" b = property(b) Now if I create C's object as c = C(), and call c.b I get TypeError: 'property' object is not callable error. How would I get pass this and call print_hello of the extended inner class? Disclaimer: I dont want to change the code for A class.

• What's the best way to block IP spoofing on a layer 3 switch?

  We're hosting Dedicated Servers and are currently using old 3com switches with IP-based ACLs. So each port has an ACL that allows all IP addresses assigned to this customer, and blocks everything else. But now 3com was bought by HP, and the follow-up model only supports basic ACL that aren't flexible enough to both allow certain IPs while blocking others. Looking at other switches in a similar price-range, we've found that most of them have similar problems or don't offer any ACL features at all. I assume this could also somehow be done with VLANs, but if I understand this correctly we'd still need some kind of ACL to actually specify the valid IP addresses for each port. What do you use to make sure your customers don't use unassigned IP addresses? Or what switches can you recommend that have flexible ACL functionality?

I am writing Python code where I want to use data from the file to perform a math function and need to extract the second column from the file.   I have been trying to read a file in "cp037" encoding scheme using JAVA. I able to read a file in basic encoding schemes like UTF-8, UTF16 etc...After a bit of research on the internet i came to know that we need charset.jar or international version of JRE be installed to support extended encoding schemes. Can anyone send me a link for international version of JRE6 or JDK6. or is there any better way that i could read a file in cp037 encoding scheme. P.S: cp037 is a character encoding scheme supported by IBM Mainframes. All i need is to display a file in windows, which is being generated on IBM Mainframes machine, using a java program. • new image makes http request even though cached?

  I have a javascript slide show that creates the next slide dynamically and then moves it into view. Since the images are actually sprites, the src is transparent.png and the actual image is mapped via background:url(.. in css. Everytime (well, most of the time) the script creates a new Element, Firefox makes an http request for transparent.png. I have a far-future expires header, and Firefox is respecting all other files' expiries. Is there a way to avoid these unnecessary requests. Even though the server is returning 304 unmodified responses, it would be nice if Firefox would respect the expiries on dynamically created images. I suspect that if I injected a simple string instead of using new Element, this might solve the problem, but I use some methods on Prototypes extended Element object, so I would like to avoid a bunch of html strings in my js file. This is a nit-picky question, but I'm working on front-end optimization now, so I thought I would address it. Thanks.

• Thin web server - single or multiple instances per IP address:port?

  I'm deploying a rack/sinatra/web socket app onto several servers and will use thin as the web server (http://code.macournoyer.com/thin/). There are almost no views to show, so I am not front-ending it with a traditional web server like Apache or nginx. In general, you see thin started and the underlying config file for it has the number of server instances to start, say 3, and the port to start with, say 5000. So, in my example, when thin starts, it starts up three instances on a range of ports, starting on port 5000. If I have a series of virtual machines, say 3, 6, 9, etc. that I treat as a cluster, would/should I choose to start a single thin instance on each VM, or multiple instances on each VM? Why? The function has several parameters: link text And before using FFT it converts image to a special one: The Bandpass Filter uses a special algorithm to reduce edge artifacts (before the Fourier transform, the image is extended in size by attaching mirrored copies of image parts outside the original image, thus no jumps occur at the edges) Can you tell me more about this special transform? • Post to a page wall that I'm not admin

  I created an app to post to pages the user chooses. How can I direct the message to a page Wall on behalf of the user? From my tests the post is sent, but the page can't see it and the page is not notified either. I have OAuth extended Permissions of publish_stream, what else do I need to my post not being invisible? I will try to clarify the problem in details: 1- I send a post to a Facebook page that is not mine, I'm just a normal user, via application that ask for publish_stream, read_stream permissions. 2- I verify the page logging as admin but no notification is delivered and I can't see the post on my Wall. 3-If I log as the sender user I can see the post on page Wall, it looks like the post is private and just the sender user can see It. If I try to recover the post via Graph API using the same user it returns false. 4- Only the users who has the app installed can see the post on page wall.

• Weird landscape UITabBarController Application startup

  Hi there. My application is quite simple, but I have some problems when it starts. I setted in the Info.plist to be landscaped, but it seems to ignore the order. In fact, when the app is loading the Simulator is landscaped, but then it returns in portrait mode. This is the hierarchy of the views and controllers: MainViewController (extends UITabBarController just to override shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:) Three extended UITableViewControllers as tabs (also those have the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation correctly setted up). If I kinda force the orientation of the device to Landscape with: [[UIDevice currentDevice] setOrientation: UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight]; Then for an instant the Simulator flashes in portrait mode, and then it goes landscaped. The problem is that in this way, the auto-rotation animations gets started, which is something I cannot tollerate. I just want a fixed, landscaped application. Any clues? Am I missing something?

• MFC/WIN32: mouse hover highlight in listctrl

  The ListView control of Windows Explorer gives a highlight to whatever item is under the mouse, without affecting the current selection. This helps enormously with relating what item a given tooltip applies to within a listview - especially in report mode. However, I am currently unable to find any APIs that would give my MFC application's CListCtrl that same behavior. Extended styles only have LVS_EX_TRACKSELECT, which actually alters the current selection (yuck!). Does anyone know how to provide a standard CListCtrl (or whatever that actually sits on top of) the mouse-hot-tracking capability? I found some articles on how to provide per cell and per row tooltip text, but its hard to tell what the tooltips relate to without something highlighting...

• Why is 'using' improving C# performances

  It seems that in most cases the C# compiler could call Dispose() automatically. Like most cases of the using pattern look like: public void SomeMethod() { ... using (var foo = new Foo()) { ... } // Foo isn't use after here (obviously). ... } Since foo isn't used (that's a very simple detection) and since its not provided as argument to another method (that's a supposition that applies to many use cases and can be extended), the compiler could automatically call Dispose() without the developper requiring to do it. This means that in most cases the using is pretty useless if the compiler does some smart job. IDisposable seem low level enough to me to be taken in account by a compiler. Now why isn't this done? Wouldn't that improve the performances (if the developpers are... dirty).
