• Audio processing in C# or C++

  Hi, I would like to create an application that uses AI techniques and allows the user to record a part of a song and then tries to find that song in a database of wav files. I would have liked to use some already existing libraries for the audio processing part. So, could you recommend any libraries in C# which can read a wav file, get input from microphone, have some audio filters (low pass, high pass, FFT etc) and maybe have the ability to plot the audio signal as well. I would prefer to develop in C#, but if there aren't good libraries for audio processing, I guess I could work in C++ as well. As far as I know, Mathlab already has the above mentioned functionalities, but I can't use it in my application.

• Possible to use a .dll on Linux

  Question: Is it possible to compile a program on linux using a .dll file? Where this is going: This .dll will be used to write a php extension to some proprietary software from a third party. Background and Research: I have been given a library called proprietary.lib. I was curious, as I have never seen the .lib extension before, so I typed: file proprietary.lib The output was: proprietary.lib: current ar archive I did some research and found that ar is more-or-less tar (and in fact, I guess tar has since replaced ar in most *nix environments). Upon inspecting the ar manpage, I saw the t option, which displays a table listing of the contents of that archive. Cool. So I type: ar t proprietary.lib And get: proprietary.dll proprietary.dll ... (snip X lines) ...

• Optimal password salt length

  I tried to find the answer to this question on Stack Overflow without any success. Let's say I store passwords using SHA-1 hash (so it's 160 bits) and let's assume that SHA-1 is enough for my application. How long should be the salt used to generated password's hash? The only answer I found was that there's no point in making it longer than the hash itself (160 bits in this case) which sounds logical, but should I make it that long? E.g. Ubuntu uses 8-byte salt with SHA-512 (I guess), so would 8 bytes be enough for SHA-1 too or maybe it would be too much?

• System.Drawing - bad text rendering using DrawString on top of transparent pixels.

  When rendering text into a bitmap, I find that text looks very bad when rendered on top of an area with non-opaque alpha. The problem is progressively worse as the underlying pixels become more transparent. If I had to guess I'd say that when underlying pixels are transparent, the text renderer draws any anti-aliased 'gray' pixels as solid black. • Access one database from multiple ORMs :: Caching issue

  I know this is not a good idea and the best would be to let the applications talk Web Services. But I have a situation where the legacy application is accessing a database with an ORM and I need to access the same database from the new .net application using Fluent nHibernate. So the question is what problems this will make and how to solve them? I guess the main issue is the caching. I need to disable the caching on one of the applications (which would be the new app). So how can I disable caching in nHibernate? Is there anything else that should be careful about?

• How do I save a copy of the clipboard and then revert back to it?

  I'm reading words in a text box by simulating the key presses required to highligh and copy the text. When I'm done, I want the clipboard to be exactly how I found it. I was hoping I'd be able to do something like this: IDataObject clipboardBackup = Clipboard.GetDataObject(); Clipboard.Clear(); //Save other things into the clipboard here, etc// Clipboard.SetDataObject(clipboardBackup); But that doesn't seem to work. It looks like you can go the route of specifically trying for text, audio, pictures, etc. and then saving them accordingly. (I guess 'data object' is specialized like that in my example too, I was hoping it was generic.) I'd prefer not to use cases for every possible type of clipboard data, both to be more concise and to make sure I never lose the data regardless of format. Any tips for grabbing any and all of the clipboard and then restoring it?

• bash: flushing stdin (standard input)

  I have a bash script that gets some input as stdin. After processing, I copy a file using "-i" (interactive). However, this never gets executed since (I guess) standard input has not been flushed. To simplify with an example: #!/bin/bash while read line do echo $line done # the next line does not execute read -p "y/n" x echo "got $x" Place this in t.sh, and execute with: ls | ./t.sh The read is not executed. I need to flush stdin before the read. How could it do this?

• TFS 2008 warning when trying to add set-up project

  I have a similar problem to that mentioned here. However, mine is in TFS 2008. I get the following warning when trying to add a set-up project to an existing solution (either just create the set-up project or “add to source control”). The project that you are attempting to add to source control may cause other source control users to have difficulty opening this solution or getting newer versions of it. To avoid this problem, add the project from a location below the binding root of the other source controlled projects in the solution Continue / Cancel As with the question above, I think my folder structure is at fault. However, the current folder structure is as follows: Solution Main Project My guess is that, for some reason it’s trying to add the set-up project directly into the solution folder. So, is there a way to validate where it’s trying to add this without selecting “Continue” above? Alternatively, is there a way to force the set-up project to create in its own folder?

  Uncle Bob recommends having small methods. Do stored procedures have an ideal size? Or can they run on for 100's and 100's of lines long? Also does anyone have anything to say about where to place business logic. If located in stored procedures, the database is being used as data processing tier. If you read Adam Machanic, his bias is toward the database, does that imply long stored procedures that only the author of the sproc understands, leaving maintainers to deal with the mess? I guess there is two inter-related questions, somehow. Thanks in advance for responding to a fuzzy question(s).

I want to select a folder then ftp all the files in the folder .. so i need access upto only the folder level and not file level .. i guess it would be tedious to go an manually select every file from the folder and then ftp .. is there a way to do that.. • How to call another PHP script from a PHP script?

  Hello, I have a PHP script that has a runtime of 34 seconds. But it dies after 30 seconds. I guess my webhost a time limit of 30 seconds. I am thinking of splitting the script into two parts say PHP-1 and PHP-2. Can I call PHP-2 from PHP-1 and kill PHP-1? Both scripts have to run in sequence, so calling both of them using cron is not possible. [ My host provides cron with interval 5 mins and does not allow to change the start time] -Will this circumvent the time limit set by host?

• Can I make DataGridView.EndEdit trigger the CellValidating event?

  I'm using a DataGridView in my WinForms application. My main objective is to make the Enter key not move to the next row in the grid. I still want the enter key to validate and end edit mode. I found this FAQ entry and subclassed DataGridView to override ProcessDialogKey(). If the key pressed is Enter, I call EndEdit(), otherwise I call base.ProcessDialogKey(). It works great, except the CellValidating event isn't fired. Currently, I'm just manually calling my validation logic before I call EndEdit, but it seems like I'm missing something. I guess I could call OnCellValidating, but then I'd be worried I'm missing some other event. What I really want is some flavour of EndEdit() that behaves just like pressing enter on the last row of a grid with adding disabled.

• problem with pagestate when two links in aspx page

  I have two links in my aspx page. one link "A" when i click it ...it is downloading some document when i click it other link "B" when I click it ....it redirects me to some other page. Both links triggers function from code behind. Both links works fine when i first come onto page but when i click A it shows me message to download it "open" "save" "cancel" problem is when i click cancel I remain on the same page but now no links work neither link A nor link B. I guess there is some problem with the state my page is in . How i can avoid this? • bash command history update before execution of command

  Hi, Bash's command history is great, especially it is useful when adding the history -a command to the COMMAND_PROMPT. However, I'm wondering if there is a way to log the commands to a file as soon as the Return key is pressed, e.g. before starting the command and not on completion of the command (using the COMMAND_PROMPT option would save the command once the prompt is there again). I read about auditing programs like snoopy and session recorder like script but I thought they're already too complex for the simple question I have. I guess that deactivating that script logs all the output of the command would lead already in the right direction but isn't there a quicker way to solve that probelm? Thanks, Jon

  Hi, I am trying to write a base crud controller class that does the following: class BaseCrudController: model = "" field_validation = {} template_dir = "" @expose(self.template_dir) def new(self, *args, **kwargs) .... @validate(self.field_validation, error_handler=new) @expose() def post(self, *args, **kwargs): ... My intent is to have my controllers extend this base class, set the model, field_validation, and template locations, and am ready to go. Unfortunately, decorators (to my understanding), are interpreted when the function is defined. Hence it won't have access to instance's value. Is there a way to pass in dynamic data or values from the sub class? If not, I guess I could use override_template as a workaround to expose and set the template within the controller action. How would I go about validating the form within the controller action? Thanks, Steve

  I am trying to determine if an Android user has had a close proximity to a list of predetermined locations. I'd like to do this with the least amount of drain on the phone's battery. The two mechanisms I see for accomplishing this are proximity alerts and requesting location updates. What are the pros and cons of the two methods? Will one have less affect on the battery than the other? In either case I would guess the specific location manager used would affect power usage (existing Stack Overflow answer).

• Core Data table record count

  I have an entity called Person and it has a relationship called participatingGames, to another entity called GameParticipant. I (apparently) can retrieve the number of matches in the GameParticipant entity using this simple code in the Person object I created from the entity in the model: [self.participatingGames count]; However, I'd just like to retrieve the number of Person records and one might guess the syntax for this is just as simple. I have lots of books including those by Jeff LaMarche, but those sources and what I find around here make me wonder if I need to set up a fetchedResultsController just to know the count of some entity. My background is in SQL, so of course it seems odd that what would take 15 seconds to code in any other environment seems like such a well-guarded secret in Core Data. I'm using iPhone SDK 3.1.4 under OSX 10.5.8 Suggestions?

• Why does my UIScrollView change it's original content offset when I scroll?

  Before I scroll, my UIScrollView is laid out perfectly. See here However if I scroll up, the view bounces as I go out of bounds and then resets too high. See here I am going to guess this has to do with a hack that I did earlier to get the view to originally show like in the first screen shot. For some reason, to get my view to look like the second screen shot, I do: [scrollView setContentOffset:CGPointMake(0,-50) animated:YES]; in viewDidLoad But if I set the content offset to 0,0 in viewDidLoad, I get something that looks like the second screen shot when the view loads. This doesn't make much sense to me because if the content offset is 0,0 I would think the content should begin in the upper right corner of the screen. Does anyone know what could be going on here?   i'm trying to define a way to send emails using gmail. it all works fine on localhost but when i deploy to heroku nothing happens. i guess it has something to do with GoDaddy MX records? here is what i tried: ActionMailer::Base.smtp_settings = { :address => "smtp.gmail.com", :port => 587, :domain => "gmail.com", :user_name => "my_user", :password => "my_pass", :authentication => "plain", :enable_starttls_auto => true } i can't change the GoDaddy MX records since i'm forwording some emails from there to my Gmail account. am i missing something? EDIT- it turns out the problem was with my Gmail account. all i needed to turn off the 2-step verification. Problem solved.

In the view, i'm trying to take all the members from a classroom like that: def inside_classroom(request,classname): try: theclass = Classroom.objects.get(classname = classname) members = Members.objects.all() etc but it doesn't work,(though the db_table is named Classroom_Members) i guess i have to use another query for getting all the members from the classroom classname. also, i want to verify if the request.user is a member using (if request.user in members) how can i het those members? • JTextPane insert component, faulty vertical alignment

  I have a JTextPane, into which I need to insert a JComponent. I'm using JTextPane.insertComponent(Component). The item is indeed inserted, but the vertical positioning is too high. Instead of having the bottom of the component aligned with the baseline of the current line of text, the component is way above that position, blocking out/over-painting lines of text appearing above. I have tried calling setAlignmentY(float) with various values, on both the inserted component and the JTextPane, but it doesn't affect the behavior at all. My guess: there seems to be some state inside my JTextPane or its Document that I need to be changing. But I don't know what it is. John

• Are Scala "continuations" just a funky syntax for defining and using Callback Functions?

  And I mean that in the same sense that a C/Java for is just a funky syntax for a while loop. I still remember when first learning about the for loop in C, the mental effort that had to go into understanding the execution sequence of the three control expressions relative to the loop statement. Seems to me the same sort of effort has to be applied to understand Continuations (in Scala and I guess probably other languages). And then there's the obvious follow-up question... if so, then what's the point? It seems like a lot of pain (language complexity, programmer errors, unreadable programs, etc) for no gain.

• How to override ggplot2's axis formatting?

  When you choose a log scale, ggplot2 formats the breaks like 10^x. I'd like it to not do that. For example, the code below should display a graph with ticks at 1, 2, 5 etc, not 10^0, 10^0.3, 10^0.69 etc. library(ggplot2) dfr <- data.frame(x = 1:100, y = rlnorm(100)) breaks <- as.vector(c(1, 2, 5) %o% 10^(-1:1)) p1 <- ggplot(dfr, aes(x, y)) + geom_point() + scale_y_log10(breaks = breaks) print(p1) I guess that adding a formatter argument to scale_y_log10 would do the trick, but I'm not sure what to put in the argument, or where the options might be documented.

• DocuSign Connect xsd [on hold]

  I'm trying to parse xml inbound to our system from the DocuSign Connect service (which publishes status updates to a given web service). I typiclly use jaxb to process xml but as far as I know I need xsd's in order to generate the jaxb. I don't have (or can't find) xsd's from DocuSign in order to do this. I could use other java classes/libraries to parse the xml but without xsd's I'd have to guess at types, restrictions and formats. Is there a way to generate jaxb without having xsd's?
