• Access Expression problem: it's too complex, so how do I turn it in to a function?

  Access 2007 is telling me that my new expression is to complex. It used to work when we had 10 service levels, but now we have 19! Great! I've asked this question in SuperUser and someone suggested I try it over here. Suggestions are I turn it in to a function - but I'm not sure where to begin and what the function would look like. My expression is checking the COST of our services in the [PriceCharged] field and then assigning the appropriate HOURS [Servicelevel] when I perform a calculation to work out how much REVENUE each colleague has made when working for a client. The [EstimatedTime] field stores the actual hours each colleague has worked. [EstimatedTime]/[ServiceLevel]*[PriceCharged] Below is the breakdown of my COST to HOURS expression. • Bored with CS. What can I study that will make an impact?

  So I'm going to an average university, majoring in CS. I haven't learned a damn thing and am in my third year. I've come to be really bored with studying CS. Initially, I was kind of misinformed and thought majoring in CS would make me a good "product creator". I make my money combining programming and business/marketing. But I have always done programming for the love of the art. I find things like algorithms interesting and want to be able to use CS to solve real world problems. I like the idea of bioinformatics and other hybrid studies. I'm not good enough, yet I hope, to really make a significant effort in those areas but I aspire to be. What are some other fields, open problems, and otherwise cool stuff to apply CS knowledge to in the real world? I'm really looking for something that will motivate me and re-excite me to continue studying CS. Edit: Like someone mentioned below. I am very interesting in the idea of being able to use computer science to help answer fundamental questions of life and the universe. But I'm not sure what is possible or how to begin.

• How to make this into a self contained jQuery plugin? Works inline.

  Hi, I have been trying to make this to be a little jQuery plugin that I can reuse in the future without having to write the following into my actions.js file in full. This works when loaded in the same file where I set the height using my variable tallest. var tallest = null; $('.slideshow img').each(function(index) { if ($(this).height() >= tallest ) { tallest = $(this).height(); } }); $('.slideshow').height(tallest); This works and will cycle through all the items, then set the value of tallest to the greatest height found. The following however does not work: This would be the plugin, loaded from its own file (before the actions.js file that contains the parts using this): (function($){ $.fn.extend({ tallest: function() { var tallest = null; return this.each(function() { if ($(this).height() >= tallest ) { tallest = $(this).height(); } }); } }); })(jQuery); Once loaded I am trying to use it as follows: $('.slideshow img').tallest(); $('.slideshow').height(tallest); However the above 2 lines return an error of 'tallest is undefined'. How can I make this work? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thinking about this even more the perfect usage of this would be as follows: $('.container').height(tallest('.container item')); But I wouldn't even know where to begin to get this to work in the manner that you pass the object to be measured into the function by adding it into the brackets of the function name.. • Is it possible to write a class that interacts with controls on my WPF form?

  Hi all, I'm trying to write a class that I can use to interact with a group of similar controls in my wpf application. I have hit a few roadblocks and now I am wondering if this is a poor approach to begin with. I want to do this primarily to make my code more manageable - I have to interact with around 200 - 300 controls with my code, and it could get very tricky to have all my code in the main window class. Here's something I'd like to be able to do: class ProcControl { private CheckBox * [] Boxes = new CheckBox[10]; ProcControl() { //set boxes 0-9 to point to the actual checkboxes } //provides mass checking/unchecking functionality public void Refactor(CheckBox box) { //see what box it is int box_index = 0; while (Boxes[box_index] != box) { box_index++; } } } This doesn't work as it is right now. I have not figured out how to get my Boxes[] array to point to the actual checkboxes on my form, so I can't interact with them yet. Is it even possible to make an array that points to a bunch of controls so that I may process their properties in a nice manner? Why can't I access the controls at all from inside my class?

  As part of our build process and evolving database, I'm trying to create a script which will remove all of the tables and sequences for a user. I don't want to do recreate the user as this will require more permissions than allowed. My script creates a procedure to drop the tables/sequences, executes the procedure, and then drops the procedure. • Best architecture for a social media app

  Hey guys, Im working on promising project that develops a new social media app for web and mobile. We are at begin defining functionalities. Nevertheless, I'm thinking ahead on architecture. So I'm asking: 1 - Whats the best plataform to develop the core of this aplication that will have a Rest API interface. 2 - Whats the best database that will scale and grow with my application. As far as I researched, these were the answers I found most interesting: For database: Cassandra NoSQL DB, amazing scalabilty, amazing write performance, good read performance (will be improved on 0.6). I think i will choose that one. Zookeer for transactions on Cassandra. I think that 2 technologies rly good for that propose. What do you think guys? On the front end that will serve the REST API, i dont have a final candidate. For this one i have questions based on Perfomance X Scalabilty X Fast Development/Maintenance. Java or .Net As far as I researched, brings the best balance of this requisits. Python, pearl and Rail, has the best (Fast Development/Maintenance), but sux on all other. C or C++ I dont even consider, because its (Fast Development/Maintenance) sux... So what do you guy think about it?

• How to access application.xml file of an EAR deployed to IBM WebSphere 6.1

  I am deploying an EAR file to the IBM WebSpehre server 6.1 - I want to be able to access the EAR application name which is stored in the deployment file under 'display-name'. Looking through stack overflow posts on related subjects, I've been able to gather that this is possible via the Java MBean API - or IBM's WAS API - Problem is I cannot find a place where these API lists are summarized, i.e. cannot figure out which one to begin looking at. I could hardcode the WAS install location and find the file by looking in the 'installedApps' directory, but this is not dynamic. Does anyone have any experience working with these APIs? Any other way to dynamically find the deployed EAR's display name? EDIT - I should add that the reason I would like this information is to dynamically load our properties files - that are named by the following convention "EARAppName.properties" - so you see there IS a reasonable 'rationale' behind desiring this information in my application EDIT 2 - I should also note that this app will always be deployed on a WAS - but in the case that it isnt, a generic non-proprietary solution would be preferred, but not necessary at this moment. EDIT 3 - What I want to accomplish: Is there a way to dynamically find the deployed EAR's display name from within the application code?

The Delphi Sampling Profiler shows that 99.3% of the time is spent in widestring concatenation (@WStrCatN and @WstrCat). Can anyone think of a way to improve widestring concatenation? i don't think Delphi 5 has any kind of string builder. And Format doesn't support Unicode. And to make sure nobody tries to weasel out: pretend you are implementing the interface: IRecordsetToHtml = interface(IUnknown) function RecordsetToHtml(const rs: _Recordset): WideString; end; Update One I thought of using an IXMLDOMDocument, to build up the HTML as xml. But then i realized that the final HTML would be xhtml and not html - a subtle, but important, difference.   I'm using a jQuery plugin called Tablesorter to do client-side sorting of a log table in one of my applications. I am also making use of the tablepager add-in. I really like the responsiveness that client-side sorting and paging brings to the party. I also like how you don't have to hit the web server or database repeatedly. However I can see that, in time, the log I'm displaying could grow quite large. I'm sure there comes a point where client-side paging and sorting is going to be impractical. What point will this technique begin to collapse under it's own weight? 500 records? 2000 records? 10,000 records? EDIT: In nutshell, what criteria would you use to determine if you are going to use client-side sorting/paging as opposed to server-side paging? Does the size of expected result set factor into your decision? Where is the tipping point?

I want to improve this process by loading the XML right into the T-SQL. Instead of getting the xml as string then converting it on the BL. • Query gives an unsorted result set when run from stored procedure using CTE

  I am trying to create a paging query using CTE. It works fine when I execute it from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Query Editor. And the result set is perfectly sorted as I want. But when I modify it for a stored procedure it gives me a unsorted result and I don't have any clue why. Currently that is not possible, because to call this function I need to specify all fields. TLDR; Is there a simple way to create a wrapper procedure for INSERT in PL/pgSQL where I can specify which fields I want to insert?

• Progressive MP4 video issues in Flash- Video stops rendering

  I'm currently working on a flash project that has an intro video that plays before heading into the main app. This video is an H.264 .mp4, 1550x540, and around 10MB. The problem thats currently driving me insane is that when I test it, occasionally the video will begin playing, and then suddenly stop rendering the video frames, leaving the audio playing in the background with nothing on screen. Once the file is played through fully (based on listening to the audio), my playback complete event fires like it should, but I can't find any info of people having similar issues. • Eclipse Maven web application - can not run on server anymore

  I have an maven eclipse webapp project that I was able to right click and 'Run on server' and it would deploy on tomcat. I recently did a 'maven - Update project conifgurations' and I now can NOT deploy and run the project as a webapp. Has anyone seen this before? The only output from tomcat is as follows - it doesnt even look like its trying to deploy the application. • How to delete duplicate vectors within a multidimensional vector?

  I have a vector of vectors: vector< vector<int> > BigVec; It contains an arbitrary number of vectors, each of an arbitrary size. I want to delete not duplicate elements of each vector, but any vectors that are the exact same as another. I don't need to preserve the order of the vectors so I can sort etc.. It should be a really simple problem to solve but I'm new to this, my (not-working) best effort: for (int i = 0; i < BigVec.size(); i++) { for (int j = 1; j < BigVec.size() ; j++ ) { if (BigVec[i][0] == BigVec [j][i]); { BigVec.erase(BigVec.begin() + j); i = 0; // because i get the impression deleting a j = 1; // vector messes up a simple iteration through } } } I think there might be a solution using Unique(), but I can't get that to work either.

  In my WPF application, I have a Canvas object that contains some UserControl objects. I wish to animate the UserControl objects within the Canvas using DoubleAnimation so that they go from the right of the Canvas to the left of the Canvas. When the user choose open, outlook sometimes gives the error "The file [].ics" is not a valid internet Calender file"? It is always the same event that is written to the response. • Why does a conditional not affect query speed?

  I have a stored procedure that was taking a "long" period of time to execute. The query only needs to return data in one case, so I figured I could check for that case and just return before hitting the actual query. The only problem is that it still takes the same amount of time to execute with an if statement. I have verified that the code inside the if is not executing, and that if I replace the complex query with a simple select the speed is fine... so now I'm confused. Why is the query being slowed down by code that doesn't get executed when the conditional is false? I have, say, 10 different Objects that inherit one Object.They have different amount and type of class members,but all of them have one property in common - Visible. type TObj1=class(TObject) private a:integer; ...(More members) Visible:Boolean; end; TObj2=class(TObject) private b:String; ...(More members) Visible:Boolean; end; ...(Other 8 objects) For each of them I have a variable. var Obj1:TObj1; Obj2:TObj2; Obj3:TObj3; ....(Other 7 objects) Rule 1: Only one object can be initialized at a time(others have to be freed) to be visible. For this rule I have a global variable var CurrentVisibleObj:TObject; //Because they all inherit TObject Finally there is a procedure that changes visibility. procedure ChangeObjVisibility(newObj:TObject); begin CurrentVisibleObj.Free; //Free the old object CurrentVisibleObj:=newObj; //assign the new object CurrentVisibleObj:= ??? //Create new object CurrentVisibleObj.Visible:=true; //Set visibility to new object end; There is my problem,I don't know how to initialize it,because the derived class is unknown.
