The code: session[:key] = some_value Generates the following error: The error occurred while evaluating nil.[] Other controllers don't have an issue with the session, so I am guessing I missed some basic configuration thing somewhere.

• Why save output until the end?

  Very quick question about programming practices here: I've always used echo() to output HTML code to the user as soon as it was generated, and used ob_start() at the same time to be able to output headers later in the code. Recently, I was made aware that this is bad programming practice and I should be saving HTML output until the end. Is there a reason for this? What is it, and why isn't output buffering a good alternative? Thanks!

• NSTableView not refreshing when calling method from different class

One is through a button and the other is when I call my refresh method, which is the same method that I use for the button, but for some reason, when I hit the button it works, but when I call it through a different class it doesn't. • I call session_start() the script hangs and nothing happens

  I am running php5, however as soon as I call session_start() the script hangs and nothing happens. Is anyone else experiencing this problem, or am I doing something incorrectly? I am using session_start() on index.php and for some reason sometimes it'll fail. No warnings, no errors, no notices, not even after prepending error_reporting(E_ALL) and ini_set('display_errors', TRUE) before session_start() do I see anything, it just plain dies.

• Sed not reconizing \t instead it is treating it as 't' why?

• Why there are no semicolons and {} blocks in some languages

  I know the question has no practical value, but it is interesting why in some languages semicolons and {} blocks are removed although their predecessor have them. Actually it makes me nervous to write a code in Python as there are no ";" and {}. Also in new language Google-GO semicolons are also missing although it says that lexer uses a rule to insert semicolons automatically as it scans. So is there any secret :) reason for this.

• Is it the best practice to extract an interface for every class?

  I have seen code where every class has an interface that it implements. Sometimes there is no common interface for them all. They are just there and they are used instead of concreate objects. They do not offer a generic interface for two classes and are specific to the domain of the problem that the class solves. Is there any reason to do that?

  I started a project using ARC, and I'm inserting a few objects into an NSMutableArray. The objects have all started out as NSStrings, and when attempting to add these objects into the array, I get the following error: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: ' -[__NSArrayM insertObject:atIndex:]: object cannot be nil This array is holding several objects. • Concurrent processes do not utilize all available CPU

  I run some processes on an EC2 cc2.8xlarge instance which has 32 virtual processors. For some type of processes, when I run 16 processes on parallel, all of them use 100% of CPU cycles. But for other type of processes, they are not using 100% CPU and they finish considerably slower than a single thread. There is no time spend on IO and all data is served from memory. Do you have any idea about the reason of this problem?

• What is a valid use for Response.Redirect("SomeURL", false) ?

  In ASP.NET I frequently use Response.Redirect to redirect the end user to another page on my system. I always set the second parameter to true to immediately end the response. For the life of me, I can't think of a reason why anybody would ever set that parameter to true. What's the point of continuing generating a page when the end user's browser is just going to be redirected to a different page immediately?

  I've got some experience with Bash, which I don't mind, but now that I'm doing a lot of Windows development I'm needing to do basic stuff/write basic scripts using the Windows command-line language. For some reason said language really irritates me, so I was considering learning Python and using that instead. Is Python suitable for such things? Moving files around, creating scripts to do things like unzipping a backup and restoring a SQL database, etc.

For instance, in the AppDelegate class header, a UIWindow and UI navigation are defined as instance variables, but the @property declarations are actually made in the implementation file. Is there a functional reason for this, is it a stylistic choice, or… ?

• Embedding script with timeout in case server goes down

  I need a way to make sure my script won't block the viewed page, if the server serving the script is down (port 80 is blocked for some reason). Currently when I test it and take down the server (Apache), or close the firewall, I see in the browser that it is trying to load the resource (script in that case), without success for long seconds, until it aborts. Is there a nice way to get past this issue?
