  • Server extremely lags and logs bunch of 'internal dummy connection'

    - by Dmitry
    Having a web-server (don't know actually whoset it up, it's my heritage). Few hours ago it started working very (extremely!) slow, mysqld oftenly fails requests. /var/log/mysqld.log is empty (well, it says, mysqld started, and so on, but nothing regarding today) /var/log/apache2/access_log is full of such lines: ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" ::1 - - [30/Nov/2011:10:15:05 +0100] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 1 "-" "Apache/2.2.3 (Linux/SUSE) (internal dummy connection)" Guys, what's that? How to heal this? I read internal dummy connections happen sometimes, but sending internal requests at 1000/sec frequency isn't freaking normal!How to find out the reason of this?

  • SQL SERVER – Three Puzzling Questions – Need Your Answer

    - by pinaldave
Last week I had asked three questions on my blog. I got very good response to the questions. I am planning to write summary post for each of three questions next week. Before I write summary post and give credit to all the valid answers. I was wondering if I can bring to notice of all of you this week. Why SELECT * throws an error but SELECT COUNT(*) does not This is indeed very interesting question as not quite many realize that this kind of behavior SQL Server demonstrates out of the box. Once you run both the code and read the explanation it totally makes sense why SQL Server is behaving how it is behaving. Also there is connect item is associated with it. Also read the very first comment by Rob Farley it also shares very interesting detail. Statistics are not Updated but are Created Once This puzzle has multiple right answer. I am glad to see many of the correct answer as a comment to this blog post. Statistics are very important and it really helps SQL Server Engine to come up with optimal execution plan. DBA quite often ignore statistics thinking it does not need to be updated, as they are automatically maintained if proper database setting is configured (auto update and auto create). Well, in this question, we have scenario even though auto create and auto update statistics are ON, statistics is not updated. There are multiple solutions but what will be your solution in this case? When to use Function and When to use Stored Procedure This question is rather open ended question – there is no right or wrong answer. Everybody developer has always used functions and stored procedures. Here is the chance to justify when to use Stored Procedure and when to use Functions. I want to acknowledge that they can be used interchangeably but there are few reasons when one should not do that. There are few reasons when one is better than other. Let us discuss this here. Your opinion matters. • What algorithm to use to fill a KenKen square board with cages?

    - by JimmyBoh
I am working on recreating KenKen, a popular math puzzle involving a blank grid that is divided into "cages". Each cage is just a collection of adjacent squares and has a clue which is generally a number and an operand, shown below: What type of algorithm would be best to fill the square with cages? Assume the maximum number of cells per cage would be 3 and the board is 4x4 in size, like in the example above.

  • Data Structures for Logic Games / Deduction Rules / Sufficient Set of Clues?

    - by taserian
I've been cogitating about developing a logic game similar to Einstein's Puzzle , which would have different sets of clues for every new game replay. What data structures would you use to handle the different entities (pets, colors of houses, nationalities, etc.), deduction rules, etc. to guarantee that the clues you provide point to a unique solution? I'm having a hard time thinking about how to get the deduction rules to play along with the possible clues; any insight would be appreciated.

  • Better data structure for a game like Bubble Witch

    - by CrociDB
I'm implementing a bubble-witch-like game (http://www.king.com/games/puzzle-games/bubble-witch/), and I was thinking on what's the better way to store the "bubbles" and to work with. I thought of using graphs, but that might be too complex for a trivial thing. Thought of a matrix, just like a tile map, but that might get too 'workaroundy'. I don't know. I'll be doing in Flash/AS3, though. Thanks. :)

    - by Pinal Dave
We love puzzles. One of the brain’s main task is to solve puzzles. Sometime puzzles are very complicated (e.g Solving Rubik Cube or Sodoku)  and sometimes the puzzles are very simple (multiplying 4 by 8 or finding the shortest route while driving). It is always to solve puzzle and it creates an experience which humans are not able to forget easily. The best puzzles are the one where one has to do multiple things to reach to the final goal. Let us do something similar today. We will have a contest where you can participate and win something interesting. Contest This contest have two parts. Question 1: What ACID stands in the Database? This question seems very easy but here is the twist. Your answer should explain minimum one of the properties of the ACID in detail. If you wish you can explain all the four properties of the ACID but to qualify you need to explain minimum of the one properties. Question 2: What is the size of the installation file of NuoDB for any specific platform. You can answer this question following format – NuoDB installation file is of size __ MB for ___ Platform. • 500 Metro Style WP7 Icons

    - by Bil Simser
I was inspired by The Noun Project, a project that offers up “Metro-style” icons in SVG format. The project is licensed under a public domain license and while it’s a great project, all of the content is in SVG format. Jon Galloway has a great post (from 2007) talking about the differences between SVG and XAML so I highly recommend that for some background. I thought it would be helpful to the WPF/Windows Phone 7/Silverlight community to provide the content in alternative formats for use in your applications. The Goods I’ve put together a package of the 500 icons (502 actually) in PNG, XAML and the original SVG format along with a couple of sample projects so you can see them in action. There’s a WPF desktop app: And a Windows Phone 7 app: Building It To get all the content first I wrote up a quick program to suck the original SVG files. Luckily they’re all in a common path just named 1.SVG, 2.SVG, and so on. Easy sleazy to grab the contents. Once I had 500 SVG files I used the latest copy of XamlTune, an open source CodePlex project that has a command line conversion tool to convert the directory of SVG files into XAML (the tool also created a PNG file of each SVG so that’s just icing on the cake). Conversions The conversion from SVG to XAML isn’t 100%. While you can just drop the content into a WPF app, it doesn’t work that way for WP7. Note that while it does show up in the app (on the emulator or device) it wouldn’t show up in Visual Studio for me. Maybe some XAML guru out there can tell me why. You can just as easily use the PNG files in WP7 but if you want the crispness of vector graphics, go for the XAML version. Of course with XamlTune being open source you could always modify the output of that program to cater it to your app. If you do make a change that’s worthy please consider submitting a patch to the project so everyone can benefit. Hope this helps and happy programming! • Apache strace to hunt down a memory leak

    - by Zipp
    We have a server with a memory issue: the server keeps allocating itself memory and doesn't release it. We're running Apache. I set MaxReqsPerClient to a really low value just so the threads don't hold a lot of memory, but has anyone seen calls like this? Am I wrong in thinking that it's probably Drupal pulling too much data back from the cache in DB? read(52, "h_index\";a:2:{s:6:\"weight\";i:1;s"..., 6171) = 1368 read(52, "\";a:2:{s:6:\"author\";a:3:{s:5:\"la"..., 4803) = 1368 read(52, ":\"description\";s:19:\"Term name t"..., 3435) = 1368 read(52, "abel\";s:4:\"Name\";s:11:\"descripti"..., 2067) = 1368 read(52, "ions\";a:2:{s:4:\"form\";a:3:{s:4:\""..., 16384) = 708 brk(0x2ab554396000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55f653000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55f753000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55f853000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55f953000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55fa53000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55fb53000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55fc53000 poll([{fd=52, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}], 1, 0) = 0 (Timeout) write(52, "d\0\0\0\3SELECT cid, data, created, "..., 104) = 104 read(52, "\1\0\0\1\5E\0\0\2\3def\23drupal_database_nam"..., 16384) = 1368 read(52, ";s:11:\"granularity\";a:5:{s:4:\"ye"..., 34783) = 1368 read(52, ":4:\"date\";}s:9:\"datestamp\";a:9:{"..., 33415) = 1368 read(52, "\";i:0;s:15:\"display_default\";i:0"..., 32047) = 1368 read(52, "e as an integer value.\";s:8:\"set"..., 30679) = 1368 read(52, "label' pairs, i.e. 'Fraction': 0"..., 29311) = 1368 top (the procs just keep growing in memory..): 12845 apache 15 0 581m 246m 37m S 0.0 4.1 0:17.39 httpd 12846 apache 15 0 571m 235m 37m S 0.0 4.0 0:12.13 httpd 12833 apache 15 0 420m 117m 37m S 0.0 2.0 0:06.04 httpd 12851 apache 15 0 412m 113m 37m S 0.0 1.9 0:05.32 httpd 13871 apache 15 0 409m 109m 37m S 0.0 1.8 0:04.90 httpd 12844 apache 15 0 407m 108m 37m S 0.0 1.8 0:04.50 httpd 13870 apache 15 0 407m 108m 37m S 0.3 1.8 0:03.50 httpd 14903 apache 15 0 402m 103m 37m S 0.3 1.7 0:01.29 httpd 14850 apache 15 0 397m 100m 37m S 0.0 1.7 0:02.08 httpd 14907 apache 15 0 390m 93m 36m S 0.0 1.6 0:01.32 httpd 13872 apache 15 0 386m 91m 37m S 0.0 1.5 0:03.13 httpd 12843 apache 15 0 373m 81m 37m S 0.0 1.4 0:02.51 httpd 14901 apache 15 0 370m 75m 33m S 0.0 1.3 0:00.78 httpd 14904 apache 15 0 335m 29m 15m S 0.0 0.5 0:00.26 httpd

  • which kernels can I safely purge?

    - by ecoologic
I use the main answer of this question quite often to clear some space, but now I'm in extreme need and I'd like to better understand which kernels are safe to purge, my list is the following 10:50:58-673 - ~> dpkg -l | grep -Eo "^.i +linux-(image|headers)[^ ]+" | cut -c 5- | grep --color -E "$|"`uname -r` linux-headers-2.6.38-15 linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic-pae linux-headers-2.6.38-16 linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic-pae # current one linux-headers-generic linux-headers-generic-pae linux-headers-server linux-image-2.6.38-15-generic-pae linux-image-2.6.38-16-generic-pae linux-image-generic-pae linux-image-server Is it enough to keep linux-headers-2.6.38-15 linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic-pae linux-headers-2.6.38-16 linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic-pae # current one Or would this be enough linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic-pae linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic-pae # current one Or which other would be the shortest (keeping the previous one too)? And why?

  • Is it unusual for a small company (15 developers) not to use managed source/version control?

    - by LordScree
It's not really a technical question, but there are several other questions here about source control and best practice. The company I work for (which will remain anonymous) uses a network share to host its source code and released code. It's the responsibility of the developer or manager to manually move source code to the correct folder depending on whether it's been released and what version it is and stuff. We have various spreadsheets dotted around where we record file names and versions and what's changed, and some teams also put details of different versions at the top of each file. Each team (2-3 teams) seems to do this differently within the company. As you can imagine, it's an organised mess - organised, because the "right people" know where their stuff is, but a mess because it's all different and it relies on people remembering what to do at any one time. One good thing is that everything is backed up on a nightly basis and kept indefinitely, so if mistakes are made, snapshots can be recovered. I've been trying to push for some kind of managed source control for a while, but I can't seem to get enough support for it within the company. My main arguments are: We're currently vulnerable; at any point someone could forget to do one of the many release actions we have to do, which could mean whole versions are not stored correctly. It could take hours or even days to piece a version back together if necessary We're developing new features along with bug fixes, and often have to delay the release of one or the other because some work has not been completed yet. We also have to force customers to take versions that include new features even if they just want a bug fix, because there's only really one version we're all working on We're experiencing problems with Visual Studio because multiple developers are using the same projects at the same time (not the same files, but it's still causing problems) There are only 15 developers, but we all do stuff differently; wouldn't it be better to have a standard company-wide approach we all have to follow? My questions are: Is it normal for a group of this size not to have source control? I have so far been given only vague reasons for not having source control - what reasons would you suggest could be valid for not implementing source control, given the information above? Are there any more reasons for source control that I could add to my arsenal? I'm asking mainly to get a feel for why I have had so much resistance, so please answer honestly. I'll give the answer to the person I believe has taken the most balanced approach and has answered all three questions. Thanks in advance

  • SQL SERVER – SQLServer Quiz 2011 – Do you know your execution plan – Two questions – One Answer

    - by pinaldave
My friend Jacob Sebastian has SQL Server Quiz 2011 launched. This time when he asked me to come up with quiz question – I wanted to come up with something which is new and make participant to think about it. After carefully thinking I come with question which I really like to solve myself. Here is the details: 1) Using Single table only Once in Single SELECT statement generate execution plan which have JOIN operator. Explain the reason for the same. 2) Using Single table only Once in Single SELECT statement generate execution plan which have parallelism operator. Explain the reason for the same. Bonus: Create a single query which satisfy both of the above statement. To answer this question and win exciting gifts please visit the SQL Server Quiz website. • SQL SERVER – BI Quiz – Troubleshooting Cube Performance

    - by pinaldave
My friend Jacob Sebastian runs SQL BI Quiz competition. Where there are 30 different questions on each day of the month. Winners get opportunity to participate in this Quiz, learn something new and win great awards. Working with huge data is very common when it is about Data Warehousing. It is necessary to create Cubes on the data to make it meaningful and consumable. There are cases when retrieving the data from cube takes lots of the time. Let us assume that your cube is returning you data very quickly. Suddenly on one day it is returning the data very slowly. What are the three things will you in order to diagnose this. After diagnose what you will do to resolve performance issue. • After one has made many grid based puzzles how does one make then into a PDF ready for printing

    - by alan ross
After one has generated many grid based puzzles like sudoku, kakuro or even plain crosswords and now one has to print them in a book. How does one make a pdf (book file) from them automatically. To explain the question better. One has the puzzle ready in computer format like ..35.6.89 for all nine rows. The dot being the empty cell. How does one convert then to a picture on a PDF page complete with box, automatically without doing them individually and then print a book from the pdf file. As can be seen there are other things also printed on the page all this is done automatically.

  • Cursor while loop returning every value but the last

    - by LordSnoutimus
    Hello, I am using a while loop to iterate through a cursor and then outputing the longitude and latitude values of every point within the database. For some reason it is not returning the last (or first depending on if I use Cursor.MoveToLast) set of longitude and latitude values in the cursor. Here is my code: public void loadTrack() { SQLiteDatabase db1 = waypoints.getWritableDatabase(); Cursor trackCursor = db1.query(TABLE_NAME, FROM, "trackidfk=1", null, null, null,ORDER_BY); trackCursor.moveToFirst(); while (trackCursor.moveToNext()) { Double lat = trackCursor.getDouble(2); Double lon = trackCursor.getDouble(1); //overlay.addGeoPoint( new GeoPoint( (int)(lat*1E6), (int)(lon*1E6))); System.out.println(lon); System.out.println(lat); } } From this I am getting: 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 3.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 5.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 4.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 5.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 5.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 5.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 4.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 4.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 3.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 3.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 2.0 04-02 15:39:07.416: INFO/System.out(10551): 2.0 04-02 15:39:07.493: INFO/System.out(10551): 1.0 04-02 15:39:07.493: INFO/System.out(10551): 1.0 7 Sets of values, where I should be getting 8 sets.   • Cure for puzzle piece programming habits?

    - by Recursion
Even though I went to a decent CS school, I was still taught with the mentality of programming with puzzle pieces. By puzzle pieces I mean, looking up code segments at each step of the development process and adding them together as needed. Eventually gathering all of the pieces and having a properly working program. So as an example, if in my program the next step is to tokenize a string, I go to google and search "how do I tokenize a string in language". All instead of critically thinking about its implementation. I personally don't think its a very good way to program and I always seem to forget everything that I have searched for. So how can I get out of this puzzle piece mode of programmer that I was taught.

  • Why does running this program on 11.10 give a 'GLIBC_2.15 not found' error?

    - by RafLance
I am trying to install Absinthe 2.0.4 on Ubuntu 11.10 on a netbook. When I try to run the install file, this keeps on happening: rafael@RafLaptop:~/Desktop/absinthe-linux-2.0.4$ ./absinthe.x86 ./absinthe.x86: /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.15' not found (required by ./absinthe.x86) Do I need to upgrade GLIBC? If so, how do I do that? Since I'm on a netbook I can't use a LiveCD so I wanted to know if there was a way I could fix this issue without reinstalling my whole OS. Any explanations about what GLIBC is exactly would be great too since this is a learning experience for me. I know that GLIBC is a part of libc.so.6 and so I tried to run sudo apt-get install libc.so.6 but was told that it was up to date. But GLIBC isn't? I hope this articulates my problem well, if there are any pieces of missing info or questions to clarity my question, please let me know! ~-~ EDIT/UPDATE: So after some help on the AskUbuntu chat room from user izx, I have gathered the following information/understanding: -I need to run this program with Ubuntu 12.04 or recompile it from source -Upgrading libc on Oneiric to 2.15 while possible, is not an easy task and is not officially supported.

  • Heartbeat won't successfully start up resources from a cold boot when a failed node is present

    - by Matthew
I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps crossover cable on eth1 and have access to an IP camera LAN on eth0. Now, let's say that one node is down and the remaining functional node is booting after having been shut down. The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource from a cold boot. I have to manually restart heartbeat by sudo service heartbeat restart to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start, when only one server is present?
