• Permission denied when running Rails app in VirtualBox Ubuntu guest with files on Windows host

  I think I'm close to having my dev environment set up exactly the way I want, but one final snag remains. I'm running VirtualBox on a Windows 7 64bit host, with my dev enviroment inside a Ubuntu 12.04 guest. I want to keep the files for my projects on the host filesystem - partly so I can access them when the Ubuntu guest is not running, but also so I can use Tortoise and other Windows based tools (cough Photoshop), and it also eases my backup scheme somewhat. So I've got a folder "Rails" on my NTFS drive, which I've shared (Samba) from the host with a user specifically created for the Ubuntu guest. The mount point has been set up and an entry added to fstab (cifs), using a credentials file and the options iocharset=utf8,mode=0777,dir_mode=07??77 This mounts fine and my Ubuntu user has both read and write permissions to the contents. But when I try to start my Rails app I get permission errors on any files the app needs to write to (e.g. the log file) - why is that? Are there any major conceptual flaws with this approach? Would I be better off using the VBox "shared folders" function?

• Windows 2008 R2 File Sharing - 'Access denied' if groups are specified in ACL

  I am trying to move our old Windows 2003 File Server to Windows 2008 R2. What I have noticed, however, is that the entries for groups in the ACL are being ignored. For example, a user is part of a group in active directory. If I create a folder and enable full access for this group, then share this folder (and define sharing permissions for this group), users in that group do not get access to that folder. If I make an entry in the ACL for the user itself, it works perfectly. These even applies to my domain administrator account - If I create a folder and give full control to the local administrators group / domain administrators group, and I physically log on to the server, I still do not get access - I need to explicitly define my name to proceed. I am not sure what the problem is, tried looking it up in Google to no avail Any assistance will be greatly appreciated

• Windows 7 Recovery Console File Access Denied

  Recently by computer crashed and was stuck in a boot loop. So I created a Windows Recovery CD and booted from that. When I use the command prompt in the recovery console, I cannot see any of my personal files or folders (such a my Users folder with My Documents). Is there a way to access these files? The only reason I would need to fix the computer properly would be to get these files off of the computer and onto a hard drive. Any other fix suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have tried both system repair and system restore from the Recovery Console, but neither seem to work. Thanks.

• Permission denied when copying on a fileshare in Finder, but copying via command line works

  I'm trying to copy files on a SMB fileshare. When I attempt to copy the files in Finder, I get the following error: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items. Copying via Terminal.app (using a simple cp command) works just fine. • Sharepoint 'Access Denied' when uploading files.

  Hi all, A sharepoint administrator with 'Full Control' to the sharepoint site (not server administrator) is trying to edit a page and upload a graphic file to http://sharepoint.internal.com/sites/maths/ we are getting "upload failed check your folder permissions" but I can't find any folder called 'sites' on the server. Does anyone have any suggestions where I would change these permissions? Thanks

  I've setup the web server successfully on Mac Leopard Server and sites work fine within the DocumentRoot directory. I have mounted a volume which has restricted access to users within a group. I would like to point the web server to directories within this volume. Can I add the user the web service is using to the group that has access to this Volume, if so: how do I find out what the user is? I can confirm the web server is pointing to the right directory as log files show the full directory path. When you access the site's URL, it shows Access Forbidden.

• Can't connect to MySQL on CentOS 5 Error 13 - Permission Denied

  Ok, I have an install of CentOS 5 running as a GuestOS in VirtualBox. The network card for the Cent box is bridged with that of my host OS so that the boxes can see each other. Cent has an IP of 192.168.1.108 and my Host box has an IP of .104. Everything, with regard to networking, seems to be working properly as I can access the Drupal install that is on the Cent box from a web browser on my host box by navigating to http://192.168.1.108 however when I try to configure the database for Drupal through the Drupal install interface I am getting the Can't connect to MySQL error. First I thought this might of been a Firewall issue so I stopped iptables but that had no effect. I thought maybe the user I had setup did not have access to the server so I tried root and that did not work. Searching on the net said that I needed to provide a bind-address parameter to my.cnf so I did that with no change. (As a side note the length of my my.cnf file was MUCH shorter than the ones presented online. In fact under mysqld all I have are datadir, socket, user, and bind-address. Is this normal or should the file be more verbose?) After a few hours of messing with permissions and such I tried using 'localhost' as the value for the database server, from my HOST OS, and the Drupal install kicked off without a problem. So while my issue is resolved I am curious as to why 'localhost' works and why 192.168.1.108 did not? Is there something i need to do to specifically access the MySQL box via the aforementioned IP?   I'm working on a corporate desktop (still) running Windows XP SP2. I recently received a new PC and am reinstalling all my tools. Something is different about this one in that it won't let me install Powershell 2.0. When I do, I get a popup: You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator. This also occurs for other installs, like Service Pack 3 and Windows Installer 4.5. I'm aware this PC is under group policy restrictions, but I haven't narrowed down what restriction is preventing this install so that I can have the appropriate support team resolve it. What setting could be responsible for this?

  I have the standalone Hyper-V Server 2012 running and I'm trying to create the first VM on it but I'm getting the following error: From my research, this error comes up with something related to the Intel IPMI driver but I have an Asus motherboard so I didn't think it was the problem. • BackupExec 2012 File System Archiving - Access is denied to Remote Agent

  Gentlemen, I've been struggling with a Trial version of Symantec Backup Exec 2012 for about a week now. It was installed as an upgrade to our 12.5 license, and the setup completed with no issues. The reason I upgraded is solely for the File System Archiving option as I'm working to reduce the amount of live data in my servers. Backups work A-Ok and I have followed the instructions in the Admin Manual to make sure I had filled all requirements. The account BE is running under is a member of the Local administrators group as required and has been added to the test share that I'm using to evaluate the archiving function. Testing the credentials in the job setup window always works fine, and I am able to add both regular and Admin$ shares to my Archive selection. However, every time I run the Archive job, I get the following message: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/59540229/BEXec.png I've already tried to troubleshoot DNS resolution issues as suggested in the Symantec KB to no avail. The only thing I can think of, at this point, is that a trial license doesn't allow me to use the Archiving function, although that would seem silly on their part. • unable to copy file to folder, permission denied without explanation

  Recently Norton Internet security deleted ml.exe (an assembler I use to program in masm32) off of my computer, thinking that one of the programs I had written with it was a virus (it was most certainly not). Fortunately, I had a copy of ml.exe backed up in an external hard drive, and tried to copy it over to my computer. The old ml.exe was located in C:\masm32\bin, so I tried to copy the new one to that location. After disabling Norton (which had opened the folder and preventing me from accessing it), I am still unable to copy the new file to C:\masm32\bin. When I tried, Windows announced that I would need Administrator permission to copy the file. Since I'm an admin, I figured this wouldn't be a problem although it was unexpected, as I have never had to provide administrator permission to access this folder before. However, instead of prompting me to enter my password, Windows simply refuses to copy the file: I repeat, I was not asked to provide a password. It simply says that I do not have permission. Does anyone know what's happening and how to fix it? Is Norton still causing problems, or it something else?

Firstly, note that "Everyone" has "Full Control" rights: And when I try to delete and recreate rights, look what comes up: I am logged in as a user with admin privileges, and I've even tried running Explorer with Admin rights... nothing seems to help. What do I do to get this right?

• Write permissions denied on linked tables between MS Access 2003 and 2007

  We are in the process of switching over to Access 2007. We have numerous data tables in Access 2003 files. In one case, the user has 2007 on his PC and opened the front end in 2007. No problems. When the the user is done, he clicks a button that executes a macro full of update queries. The macro reaches the first query and halts. We get a message saying we do not have permissions to write to this linked table (2003 format). There were no security files involved. We re-linked from 2007, same problem. LAN permssions were ok. I wound up having to import the tables to front end in order for the user to be able to do his job.

It was all working fine until I asked my server admin to help me set up allow all access to one particular file. Now the entire folder is just giving me a 403 error. • Windows Network copy and access denied randomly

  I have a windows 2008 R2 server and I now installed a new bigger HDD into it. I wanted to copy big AVI files to the new server hdd what is shared on the local network. I have write access to the servers hdd and I can successfully copy smaller files to it. But when I copy bigger files more than 500MB randomly on the copy I get Access Deny message. If I use RDP I can copy files through RDP client. I checked error messages at the server but I didn't found any error about this access deny. Because of RDP copy works I don't think that this could be hardware error. I think this is some kind of software setting error. Someone has faced this kind of error? Or somebody has idea what could cause or how to find the root of the problem?

• Access denied to EFS encrypted files after PC joins domain

  I'm experiencing strange behavior with Windows Encrypted File System: I have a machine that is in workgroup mode (not joined to a domain) I encrypt an entire directory structure on the machine (basically a folder and subfolders with data files for my application). My application writes and reads files from the encrypted file hierarchy as a local Windows user (let's call the account 'SecureUser'). This works fine I then join the PC to a domain (Let's call it 'TEST') Afterwards, processes running as the local 'SecureUser' account can't read the files it wrote originally when it was off the domain (What is also strange is that the files are listed as "read only" now and I cannot unset this flag via Windows Explorer or the command line, even though it looks like it succeeds) I then 'un-join' the PC from the domain and everything works again Is there something about changing domain membership on a PC that changes the behavior of EFS so that previously encrypted files cannot be read, even by the originating user?   I am having some trouble creating files in directory on my Ubuntu machine: I added myself to the www-data group in order for me to easily edit stuff in my /var/www dir on my development machine. stat /var/www shows the following: File: ‘/var/www’ Size: 4096 Blocks: 8 IO Block: 4096 map Device: 808h/2056d Inode: 142853 Links: 3 Access: (0775/drwxrwxr-x) Uid: ( 33/www-data) Gid: ( 33/www-data) Access: 2010-12-30 16:03:18.563998000 +0100 Modify: 2010-12-30 16:02:52.663998000 +0100 Change: 2010-12-30 16:03:13.111998001 +0100 Still, it is impossible for me to create anything below /var/www (the only way for it to work is to chmod it to 777. What am I missing?

  I am having trouble using impersonation to delete a PerformanceCounterCategory from an MVC website. I have a static class and when the application starts it checks whether or not a PerformanceCounterCategory exists, and if it contains the correct counters. If not, it deletes the category and creates it again with the required counters.
