  • Can I use a USB monitor (like Mimo) as a primary monitor?

    I have an old PC in the den without Video Card (I have to remove it after it start failing). I access it through Remote Desktop. I don't want to invest in a new video card since the PC is old. If I buy a USB monitor I can use it as a secondary monitor in the main pc, and plug to the old PC when need. The question is: Does the USB monitor work during booting before the OS was loaded?

  • OC'ing a Sapphire 7950, problems with memory clock

    I bought a new rig with sapphire radeon 7950 flex w/ boost. Good scores initially in 3dmark 11, around 7300 stock. Problem is, as soon as i start overclocking, issues arise. the core clock is at 860, but rises to 925 with boost applied in pressured situations. So all the OC tools are showing 925 as base clock for some reason. Ocing the core clock has been no problem though, got up to 1200 pretty stable, but only an incremental increase in 3dmark 11, to 7600 from 7300, which is worrying. The real trouble starts when i start touching the memory clock. As soon as i touch it even by 1 point up to 1251mhz, the performance goes way down. suddenly i score under 5000 graphics in 3dmark11, no matter if its 1251hz or 1500hz. Ive tried adjusting every other parameter, different tools (sapphiretrixx, catalyst, afterburner) all still the same. Tried upping the power, still same. Where is the issue here?

  • A black screen with only the mouse cursor while booting

    Once i tried to re-install Windows 7. I formatted C drive, during installation system was hanged during the step "installing updates". then i cancelled the process. When i tried again, after booting from CD a black screen with a mouse pointer appears. No further progress. The mouse pointer can be moved. I tried with some other disks also. I tried with installing ubuntu also. Even though similar condition.plz help........... I cannot install an OS

  • Building uEFI bootable ISO and USB for Windows 7 deployment

    I have been trying to build up a window's 7 and 2k8 EFI deployment ISO or USB. But struggling to to even get an ISO to boot from even VMware Workstation EFI implementation. The problem is there is no clear requirement to what the EFI bootloader is looking for, "e.g EFI boot file" even ISO's and USB's that are bootable don't find the required .efi file. I'd like to know what is the process EFI bootloader follows to boot the EFI file. e.g; in a EFI windows system its; C:\Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgfw.efi From DVD it's; F:\efi\microsoft\boot\cdboot.efi from what people tell me it's on USB; G:\efi\boot\bootx64.efi (bootmgfw.efi renamed) I've been testing on a HP notebook with EFI 2.0 and VMware Workstation 8.0 with .vmx file firmware = "efi"

  • My hard drive can only boot once every two times

    Hi all, I just installed a Kingston 64 GB SSD into my laptop, replacing the old 80 GB 5400 RPM one. The drive starts up and works fine every other time. For example, if I'm running normally, and press "Restart", I get: 2100 Initialization error on HDD0. I turn off the computer manually, restart, and...it boots into Ubuntu again. This happens every other time without fail...anyone know what the problem could be?

    I just bought the following server IBM System x3950 Server, 4 x 3.0GHz Dual Core, 32GB, 6 x 73.4GB 10K SAS RAID, 256MB BBWC, 2x Power, CD-RW/DVD When i boot it up, it says "Searching for secondary server" and hangs their for almost 10 mins. After 10 mins, it says timeout on searching chassis 2. But after this it proceed to boot the OS properly. But my frustration, i need to wait for almost 15 mins to boot everytime. How do i prevent this error message.

  • What does this beep code mean?

    When I wanted to start my laptop today (an Acer Aspire 8920G), the laptop started beeping. I know this beeping is a POST error code, but I can not figure out which one it is. The motherboard of the laptop is manufactured by Phoenix, so I looked up these POST codes: http://www.bioscentral.com/beepcodes/phoenixbeep.htm The beeping is in the form 1-1-1-1 (short beeps, repeating and even without ending), but this code is not mentioned by the manufacturer. Does anybody know what could be the problem? I don't know if it is relevant, but since a couple of months the CMOS battery was degrading. The laptop couldn't keep track of the time. Maybe a failing CMOS battery could be the problem?

    Hi there some time ago(10 years back) I've read on PC Magazine that some mainboards have some settings which allow to a computer to open at a certain hour. I need to make my computer to wake me up in each morning. How can I do that ? What MB settings allow this feature? ps: i will like to shout down the computer during the night(not sleep or hibernate mode). ATM I'm using windows xp and 7 on my computers.

  • cdrom drive doesn't work on laptop

    Here's as best as I can describe it: When starting up, the boot order doesn't recognize the cdrom drive, but I can open and close the drive during this time. In Windows 7, I can't open the cdrom drive, and it doesn't recognize it in device manager, disk management, or my computer. In Ubuntu Linux, I can open the cdrom drive, but it still doesn't recognize the cds, and it won't mount. If I reformat everything, would my cdrom drive work again? Can I reinstall Windows without a cdrom drive? I've deleted the upper and lower filters as was suggested in Google searches. Took the disk drive out and checked that it was installed correctly (no reason it shouldn't have been). Still: nothing works.

    I just bought a Dell Poweredge 2850 from Craigslist and for the most part I'm happy with it's $300 price-tag, but I cannot figure out where to configure the embedded hardware raid... I've seen online you should hit <CTRL-M>, but while booting my box never says that. I have <CTRL-A> (I think) for an LSI Logic config, but that seems to just program SCSI and verify drives on my SCSI-A and SCSI-B. Anyone have a clue where this RAID config is?

    My Computer Specification My Motherboard specification My new Graphic Card Some days ago I bought a GeForce 8400 GS Graphic card. My computer satisfied all the minimum system requirements it required. After installing the Card in PCI Express Slot I started the computer. But it now hangs at the POST screen i.e.(the first screen when the PC loads). It hangs at Checking NVRAM. I had checked the graphic card on other PC and its works perfectly. So I think there's no problem in the Graphic card. If I remove my graphic card and run my PC with built in Graphic card, my PC works and doesn't hang. So, what can be the problem?     My ever-growing interest in computers is making me ask deeper questions, that we don't seem to have to ask anymore. Our computers, at boot, as far as I understand it, are in text mode, in which a character can be displayed using the software interrupt 0x10 when AH=0x0e. We've all seen the famous booting font that always looks the same, regardless of what computer is booting. So, how on earth do computers output graphics at the lowest level, say, below the OS? And also, surely graphics aren't outputted a pixel at a time using software interrupts, as that sounds very slow? Is there a standard that defines basic outputting of vertices, polygons, fonts, etc. (below OpenGL for example, which OpenGL might use)? What makes me ask is why OS' can often be fine without official drivers installed; how do they do that? Apologies if my assumptions are incorrect. I would be very grateful for elaboration on these topics!

  • How can one create a bootable linux usb key that works on Mac (Intel 64 bit CPU) hardware ?

    Hi, I'm trying to create a bootable usb key with linux (debian) and that can be booted on Macintel hardware. I have read that MAC's EFI can only boot GPT GUID formatted disks. I'm desperately trying to find a good tutorial which explains how to create such a key. Here what I have done so far: create a GUID partition on te key using linux GNU parted create a HFS+ or ext3 partition on the key, with the boot flag on install a linux .iso with unetbootin While all steps were successfull and in some cases I could even boot on a PC, the step of booting on Macintel software failed (on a macbook). I need to precise that I holded the "alt" key while booting the mac and the only visible bootable disk was the hard disk. Thanks for any advice. PS: I have tried with rEFIt as well. In one case I had a "windows" icon but it then failed to boot with a message like "no system found"

    Building my FIRST computer. Will start with at least - one HDD, I purchased a WD SATA HDD a 10,000RPM VelociRaptor 500GB. I have read that if you use one of the settings, can't remember what it's called, that it would make an HDD rund at IDE speeds??? Could I or should I run it in RAID instead? Is RAID only for more than one HDD/ssd? I would like to get like a 64GB SSD later to maybe speed things up working together. Thanks

    I'm curious to know, when I bought a brand new laptop there are limitations to create or change the HDD partitions, except the following partitions: c:\ drive (Main partition + OS drive) NTFS. 400 Gb. Recovery drive NTFS. 15 Gb. Tools drive FAT32. 2 Gb. System drive NTFS. 0.3 Gb. My questions are: How do manufacturers restrict HDDs ? What is the term for these restrictions? Can this be applied to desktop PCs? Is it possible to modify the restrictions by an end-user?

  • when i set my FSB to 400mhz in bios it actually stays at 333mhz

    My front side bus (FSB) is rated for a maximum of 400mhz (Rated FSB 1600MHz). In fact, it used to run at 400mhz until recently. I'm trying to overclock my E8400 to 3.6GHz. I have done that in the past by having the FSB at 400 with a multiplier of 9. Now, when I set the FSB to 400, the system boots as normal, but the FSB stubbornly is stuck at 333 (Rated FSB 1333). The CMOS is set to 400, I've triple-checked it. It's just the FSB isn't listening. Is my FSB damaged? Gigabyte mobo

    Hello, I just stuck in a new 64 GB SSD (literally out of the box) into my Lenovo X61 laptop, replacing an old 5400 RPM 80 GB drive. When I boot the system, my motherboard successfully sees the SATA hard drive. Now I want to install Ubuntu on it. I stick it in the CD drive, bootup the system, and it gets to step 4 (choose partition), but sees no available partitions. Do I need to do something to the hard drive before installing Ubuntu? "address 0x500 is the last one used by the BIOS" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_boot_record "00000000-000003FF Real Mode IVT (Interrupt Vector Table)" - wiki.osdev.org/Memory_Map_%28x86%29 So can you tell me why NASM places my .com file's stack pointer to 0x3FF while my instruction pointer starts at 0x7c00? To me the most intuitive place for SP would be right below 0x7c00. Thanks.
