• nohup or persistent process on Mac OS X ssh

  I know this has been asked before but none of the answers seems to work in OS X mountain lion. I would like to launch a process via SSH and close the terminal without kill the process. nohup ccl64 -e '(ql:quickload :"file")' & doesn't work. When the terminal is closed the process dies nohup ccl64 -e '(ql:quickload :"file")' same here I think there must be a way. this is very annoying as it works as a standard in any linux system yet mac os x refuses to work with any of these combinations. • Kubuntu Monitor Out of Range

  My X server seems to be faulty, but I don't know why. I had some problems last week with a new motherboard, but they seemed to be resolved. Today, I updated Kubuntu and restarted, but my Viewsonic VX900 LCD monitor shows the splash screen for several seconds, then displays the message "Out of Range" I have tried various kernels in Grub, some in recovery mode, most do the same thing. No key combinations bring up a shell prompt like I expect. The one exception was a very old kernel, that would only mount the file system as read-only, so I can't fix up the xorg.conf file. Is there anything to be done?

  I work as a developer so I have to use key combinations a lot. And I have HP Envy laptop. And the Ctrl key is broken for the second time. First time I just took one from my friend. But I don't have any more friends who are willing to sacrifice their Ctrl key Anyone know where I can find one? (or rather a bunch because they are so weak and low quality) I tried to contact HP support but they did everything to prevent people from doing it. And it is impossible to reach HP support. • How to configure nginx to serve static contents from RAM?

  I want to set up nginx as my web server. I want to have image files cached in the memory (RAM) rather then disk. I am serving a small page and want few images always served from RAM. I dont wish to use varnish (or any other such tools) for this as I believe nginx has a capability to cache contents into RAM. I am not sure as how may I configure nginx for this? I did try few combinations but they didn't work. nginx uses disk all the time to get images. For example, when I tried apache benchmark to test with following command - ab -c 500 -n 1000 http://localhost/banner.jpg I get following error - socket: Too many open files (24) I guess this means nginx is trying to open to many files simultaneously from the disk and OS is not allowing this operation. Can anyone please suggest me a correct configuration? Thanks for considering this message.

• Option and command keys in OSX are swapped and keyboard preferences do not set them back.

  On my MacBook pro, I occasionally use external keyboards, generally Windows ones and things have been fine. Yesterday, I plugged in a new one, remapped the command/option keys so the windows/alt keys were in the same configuration, again, nothing new here. However, this time when I unplugged the USB keyboard, the laptops option/command keys remained switched. More annoying is that if I go into the System Preferences - Keyboards - Modifier keys, remapping the keys to actions does not work. I can use the drop downs to disable any specific keys, but switching the behaviours does nothing. (Cmd/Option obvious, tried remapping anything to caps lock and a few other combinations, no joy. Restore defaults set the configuration to what I'd expect, but the settings are evidently ignored.) So: Any ideas?

  I'm getting (delivery temporarily suspended: SASL authentication failed; server myserver.com[xxx.xxx.xxx.x] said: 535 5.7.3 Authentication unsuccessful) when I try to relay mail from Postfix 2.5.5-1.1 on Debian Lenny box to Exchange 2010. I think I tried all possible combinations but I'm definitely missing something. Here is relevant part of main.cf: broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd smtp_pix_workarounds = smtp_sasl_type = cyrus smtp_always_send_ehlo = yes relayhost = myserver.com And I got libsasl2-modules installed. Anybody managed to successfully relay mail between Postfix and Exchange? Oh, and I already double-checked if password is right.

• change directory automatically on ssh login

  Hi, I'm trying to get ssh to automatically change to a particular directory when I log in. I tried to get that behaviour working using the following directives in ~/.ssh/config: Host example.net LocalCommand "cd web" but whenever I log in, I see the following: /bin/bash: cd web: No such file or directory although though there is definitely a web folder in my home directory. Even using an absolute path gives the same message. To be clear, if I type cd web after logging in I get to the right folder. What am I missing here? EDIT: Different combinations of quotes/absolute paths give different error messages: LocalCommand "cd web" /bin/bash: cd web: No such file or directory LocalCommand cd web /bin/bash: line 0: cd: web: No such file or directory LocalCommand cd /home/gareth/web /bin/bash: line 0: cd: /home/gareth/web: Input/output error This makes me think that the quotes shouldn't be there, and that there's another error happening.

  I have an AIX 6.1 system that I've compiled and installed: Apache 2.2.21 (into /usr/local/mercurial) Python 2.7.2 (into /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/lib) mod_wsgi 3.3 (with the AIX fix #1 described here) Mercurial 2.0 (system-wide) However, when Apache starts, I get the following message in error_log: IOError: invalid Python installation: unable to open /usr/local/bin/lib/python2.7/config/Makefile (No such file or directory) See the problem? bin/lib doesn't exist. /usr/local/lib/python2.7/config/Makefile does exist though. However, I can't figure out where it's getting that path from. • php include path problem:Same code works on Ubuntu default Apache and php conf, but not on CentOS

  So the same code works on my ubuntu server but when I upload it to my dedicated hosting server running CentOS it seems to add an extra prefix of .:/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php: I tried setting includepath to different things but it just doesn't work. the file is in a directory called language in the same folder as the file that is including it and I'm using : include dirname(FILE).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."language".DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."storage.inc"; and include dirname(__FILE__)."/language/language.php"; and include "language/language.php"; and alot of other combinations but I can't get it to find the file. • How to disable the green power light on the Sony Vaio

  The Sony Vaio's green power light is extremely bright and very distracting! I can't even look at the screen without this power light being in my view!! Is there any way to disable it or reduce its intensity? Googling for "sony vaio disable green power light" (and similar combinations) didn't provide anything useful. I tried booting into the BIOS, but it didn't have an option for this. Also, the Viao Command Center didn't have any on it. I guess sticking a tape over the LED is the only option? • How can one-handed work in Emacs be eased?

  My right hand is temporarily immobilized and I would like to do some minor work in Emacs, mostly in Org-mode, but also in AUCTeX. Are there ways to ease one-handed work in Emacs, such as some mode or particular work flow? For instance I noticed that for undoing it is easier to press C-x u than C-_ and that it is easier to mark text with methods involving C-Space than with combinations of S- and movement commands. I have found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2391805/how-can-i-remain-productive-with-one-hand-completely-immobilized but that is not exactly what I am asking for. I want to ease whatever little time spent one-handed in Emacs (not in general) and this is also interesting for situations where there is no injury involved, such as when one hand is occupied. I do realize that I should avoid unnecessary strain. I am using GNU Emacs 23.3.1 in Ubuntu 11.04.

• What's the meaning of logging in as "[email protected]:something"

  My Windows 2008 R2 machine is joined to a domain. In the logon screen, if I type in "[email protected]:something" as the username, I can still logon properly, what's the meaning of ":something" appended at the end? I can even see the current user is displayed as "[email protected]:something" in the switch user screen. Is it a feature in Windows? Or is it just a bug? If it is a feature, what's the difference between logging in as "[email protected]" and logging in as "[email protected]:something"? Note that I tried different combinations like "mydomain\username:something" and "mydomain.com:something\username". None of them work except "[email protected]:something".

• modprobe ndiswrapper - not found

  I'm trying to use ndiswrapper on a Slackware 12 (I think) box, but I'm running into a problem with modprobe. Everything I find online says that it should be working, but for some unknown reason it isn't. Here's what I've done so far: Installed ndiswrapper (latest tarball, make, make install) Ran ndiswrapper -i on the WinXP driver for my USB wireless card Ran ndiswrapper -l which tells me the driver is present and the device is present (lsusb also confirms the device is present) Ran ndiswrapper -m which put an alias for wlan0 in /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper.conf Ran depmod -a Ran modprobe ndiswrapper which tells me "FATAL: module ndiswrapper not found" Ran modprobe -l which shows no listing for ndiswrapper I even tossed in a reboot or two while trying various combinations of the above, still nothing. So naturally ifconfig wlan0 up isn't working because the device isn't being created, presumably because the module isn't loading the driver. Does anybody have any suggestions? Everything points to the notion that this should work fine, but modprobe just isn't able to find what it needs. Have I missed an important step?

• DVI to VGA adapter only working in one output

  I have a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series graphics card which has 2 DVI outputs. I tried to set it up with 2 monitors which both have vga connectors on the end and used 2 dvi to vga adapters like these. http://www.tvcables.co.uk/images/items/vga-to-dvi.jpg For some reason nothing would reach the monitor, it would remain in standby, if it was plugged into the second output. I tried all the different combinations of cables, adapters and the 2 monitors but whichever monitor that was plugged into the second output wouldn't work. I then randomly decided to plug a different monitor into the second output which has a dvi connector on the end so there was no need for an adapter and plugged it in and it worked! Does anyone know why the second output on the graphics card won't work with a dvi to vga adapter (and the first output will)? I'm really confused! Thanks

  I am trying to convert a list of property id numbers that has a standard format of 0000-A-00000-00-00, where my worksheet has the various combinations of 1-A-123 10-B-1234 Ideally they would read as follows 0001-A-00123-0000-00 0010-B-01234-0000-00 I've tried using the custom number formatting but it doesn't like the letter in the middle of the number. I didn't know if my only option was to break them apart and then put them back together again. I would accept a solution that merely put the leading zeros at the front of the number, (max is 4 characters) so the result could look like 0001-A-123

• Enabling Compiz Viewport Switcher key bindings

  I'm running compiz 0.8.2 with compizconfig on Scientific Linux 6.2 with Gnome 2.28.2. In the compizconfig "General Options" I have "Desktop Size" set as follows: Horizontal Virtual Size: 6 Vertical Virtual Size: 1 Number of Desktops: 1 This gets me the layout I want, i.e. 6 workspaces in a horizontal layout. Ctrl-alt-cursor-keys work fine for switching between them. However, I can't figure out how to get key bindings for specific workspaces. I've tried enabling "Viewport Switcher" in compizconfig, and tried various combinations both in "Number-based viewport switching" and "Go to specific viewport", to no apparent effect. My first thought was that something else was eating the specific key bindings I chose, but I think I've tried every combination of shift, control, alt and super (i.e., the Windows key) by now. I tried setting 6 desktops under "General Options" instead of one desktop with horizontal virtual size 6, but that doesn't seem to make a difference either. What am I missing?

• rsync doesn't use delta transfer on first run

  I'm trying to synchronize a large local directory (with a batch file using rsync 3.0.7 on Cygwin, Windows 7 x64, 30k files, 200gb size) to a remote server (Debian x64 with kernel 2.6, rsyncd 3.0.7) over a slow internet connection (90kbyte/s upload). I know almost all files are identical and I verified that using md5sum locally and remotely. However when executing rsync from my local machine every file gets transferred completely for the first time. When I terminate the batch file after a few transfers and run it again then the already transferred files are skipped. But as soon as it gets to a file not yet transferred it uploads the file as a whole again instead of noticing that the checksum is the same locally and remotely. • Can't start a service (sudo) remotely from script and keep it running

  I have a service (tomcat) that needs sudo to be started. I made a simple script on the remote server in /root/bin/test.sh #!/bin/sh sudo service tomcat start read (The script needs to do other stuff too, just pared down for simplicity). When I run a it directly on the remote server, tomcat starts and continues running on the server after I disconnect. When I run it remotely, the process starts, (I can see it when paused for the "read"), but once the script ends, it's gone. (while paused for the read, run this command locally) ps -ef | grep tomcat I've tried various combinations of nohup, screen, and & on the commands both on the local machine and in the remote machine's test.sh script, but I can't seem to get it working. ssh -t [email protected] "/root/bin/test.sh" ssh -t [email protected] "nohup /root/bin/test.sh" ssh -t [email protected] "nohup /root/bin/test.sh &" ssh -t [email protected] "screen /root/bin/test.sh &"

• Gnome keyboard shortcuts dysfunctional after waking up from sleep

  Hello, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on my Thinkpad T61. Very often after the system woke up from sleep, all the gnome shortcuts went dead (no effect when key combinations pressed). Things like "Alt+F4, Alt+TAB" are dead; things like Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V are OK; buttons such as volume up/down also OK; I tried to Google for answers but wasn't lucky enough. Any idea how to solve it? Thanks! If it's not preventable, can I at least restore them without restarting the session?

• Invoke host's workspace switcher from inside VM

  When I start a virtual machine (like VMware or VirtualBox) and set it full screen then, from the host OS (in this case Ubuntu), I can beautifully switch to it with the Workspace Switcher. So I switch to the VM like I switch to a virtual screen. But switching back -- from the VM to the host's virtual screens -- seems to be impossible because by entering the VM I loose the host's workspace switcher. Is there a nifty workspace switcher program that runs inside the VM and is able to switch workspaces of the host machine? Edit in light of Frank Thomas' answer, can we configure VirtualBox (or VMware) to not send certain key combinations to the VM, but keep them to the host? Like Super+S. In that approach I would sadly have to miss the nice workspace switcher icon in the guest OS, but that's OK if at least the keyboard trick would work.

• Why are the Volume and other indicators missing on my eMachines eM355?

  I just bought an eMachines eM355. The default installed OS is MeeGo so I installed Windows 7 into it instead. The problem, however, is that, the on-screen indicators have disappeared. The ones I'm talking about are the small dark boxes that appear at the bottom part of the screen when you, for example, press Fn + Up Arrow (to adjust volume). The same goes for the brightness adjusting and the rest of the Fn key combinations. The keys do work but I'd still prefer to see a prompt on the screen. Another reason why I want to solve this is because I can't effectively toggle the Bluetooth and Wifi since I don't get any prompts when pressing Fn + F3. I wanted to include a picture of what I'm looking for but I couldn't find the exact term for such.

  I've been using googlecl successfully to add events to my calendar. Things like: google calendar add "call Paul tomorrow at 8:30am" work great, and add the appropriate event t the right time. But no reminder is added for the event. I tried: google calendar add "call Paul tomorrow at 8:30am reminder 10 minutes" and other combinations. It just ends up adding the "reminder" instruction to the event description. What's the syntax I should use to add a, let's say, 10 minutes pop-up reminder? Thanks

• Is there any way I can add alternative key binding to a feature in compiz?

  I was wondering is there any way to add additional, alternative key binding to a particular feature in compiz? I am using Wall plugin and on my ThinkPad it is convenient to switch between horizontal workspaces with media buttons for browser navigation. But there just two of them, so I have to use completely different combinations to switch between workspaces vertically and that would very helpful if I can also use similar kind of combination to switch horizontally as well in addition to those media buttons. Is there a way maybe to send a message to the compiz to execute particular command? That would solve the issue.
