• Sudden restart now chrome kills computer

  My computer suddenly restart itself the other day and when it came back up so much as clicking on the icon for Google Chrome freezes everything. I uninstalled Chrome and tried reinstalling is but as soon as the download finished, the computer froze again. I tried installing an earlier version (about a week prior) and it froze differently but still froze. I am also getting notification that the battery needs to be replaced. At the moment I am running it sans battery and using firefox and everything seems to be fine. I have a HP dv4t running Windows 7.

• Visual Studio hangs Windows

  I have: Windows XP Pro SP3 with latest updates, drivers, .NET, etc. Pentium 4 2.8GHz 2GB RAM 150GB HD ATI Radeon HD 3400 Recently (as early as a week ago) Visual C++ (both 2005 Pro and 2008 Express) started hanging up my computer. Whenever they are run, after 5-20 minutes of work the computer freezes. Everything becomes unresponsive, including the mouse cursor. No combination of keys does anything. What's strange, is that Winamp/Firefox continues to play whatever it was playing at the time (internet radio, mp3 playlist, etc). The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I've run CCleaner and a full AVG antivirus scan, both of which found nothing suspicious. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

• ruby rails loop causes server freeze

  Hi all: I am working on a Ruby on Rails project on Windows. I have Ruby 1.86 and Rails 2.35 installed. Everything is fine until I tried to implement a comet process. I have the following code written to respond to a long poll javascript request. But everytime this function is called, it will hang the whole rails server, no second request can get in, until the timeout. (I know there is juggernaut, but I like to implement one myself first :) Is this due to my server setup? • Excel 2003 Freezes When Worksheet with PivotTable Selected

  All of the sudden, my Excel 2003 began an odd behavior today. Whenever I click on a worksheet tab that has a PivotTable on it, I become unable to click on any other tabs or on the menu with the options to minimize, maximize, and size at the top left of the worksheet window. I am left unable to click on the other tabs until I double-click inside a cell in the PivotTable worksheet and get a blinking curor as if to type. Then, I can navigate to other tabs normally. I can't think of any major changes I have made to my computer in the last day that would have caused this. I did instiall PC Tools antivirus over a week ago, and since that time have noticed my computer behaving in odd ways, but excel has been just fine until now. Does anyone have any thoughts on what might cause this? Thanks so much.

• ASUS M51SE freezes for no apparent reason

  First of all, it's my first question on superuser so please excuse me if it doesn't belong here, a similar one has already been posted here or if I missed some details. My ASUS M51 freezes up. It all started a couple of months ago and I basically forgot about it since I bought a new laptop around that time. This is, however, bugging me since then and I can't explain why it's happening. Let me quickly describe what's wrong. When switched on and running (win 7) it freezes after a couple of minutes of normal usage (or even if I don't actually do anything). By 'freezes', I mean it's like a static image of my desktop was being displayed on the screen. Nothing happens, alt+ctrl+del doesn't help, I basically have to switch it off using a power button. I tried to remove the hard drive and to start the laptop without it. The same here - it freezes on the the initial black loading screen (a couple of minutes after the computer says it can't find the hdd) I tried to remove RAM - the same thing. All fans are spinning as they should. I cleaned the fans using a small paintbrush but it doesn't change anything. The laptop is generally clean and in pretty good physical shape. Well, almost, obviously :). One possible clue I can think of is that the laptop is heating excessively even when it doesn't actually do anything (hdd removed). Do you have any ideas what is the cause of this or what else can I try? Thanks, Piotr

• Windows 7 hangs while loading desktop

  I am facing a weird problem. My computer hangs while loading the desktop, and only the background shows up; no icons or bars load. If I power the system on and off about 4-6 times, I may be able to use it normally. The desktop loads normally after rebooting or in safe mode; this only occurs when I start the system normally. I've tried several things to fix it, such as removing all start-up items, but it still doesn't solve the problem. What should I do? • Why can't I install Java?

  I've been searching high and low for someone who can help me. I've been trying for a month. A month. to install Java on my new PC to no avail. No tech support forum can seem to help me. It all started while playing tekkit one day. I kept running out of memory (using the 32-bit JRE 7 u45) so I decided to install the 64-bit version. I uninstalled the 32-bit version first, for some reason, and downloaded the 64 bit runtime. In the installer, I go through all the normal screens until the installation progress bar appears. Then, it just sits there. No progress is made. No CPU is used by the installer, or any of its dependencies. The installer will stay like this for hours, days, and in one case a whole week without doing anything at all. I've tried installing older versions, the 32-bit version, even Java 6 and none of them will install. UAC is disabled, I've run regedit, CCleaner, and any other "fix-it" program there is. It's getting to the point where I may just have to wipe my hard drives and start over. I have several applications that require java, so this is an absolute necessity. • How to make Linux reliably boot on multi-cpu machines?

  I've got two machines, one with 4x12 AMD Opteron cores (AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6176), one with 2x8 Xeon cores (HT disabled; Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2660 0 @ 2.20GHz). On both machines I experience difficulties during boot of Linux using recent kernels. The system hangs during the initialization of the kernel, before or just when initramfs started initializing the hardware. Yet, only one core is used. Also, the kernel of RHEL6 seems to work fine. I suspect that there are some patches used to make things work. Using the kernel config file from RHEL6 and building a more recent kernel yields the same problems. On the Xeon machine, things got better by disabling Hyperthreading completely. The machine now boots successfully on at least 4 out of 5 times. And if it boots, multicore stuff works just fine. However, I'm wondering about what to do about the AMD machine. So to sum it up: Gentoo kernel 3.6 - 3.11 won't reliably boot those machines unless you reduce the amount of cores (e.g. via nolapic). RHEL6 kernel (which is 2.6.32) boots just fine. RH kernel config used to build a 3.x kernel won't yield a working kernel. Not distribution specific (apart from the kernel being used). These stack traces got printed every minute or so. The kernel seems to be stuck in an endless loop. Yet, a recent kernel is needed for various reasons. So the question is: What does the RHEL6 kernel do, what vanilla or gentoo kernels don't do? Is there a boot option that might lead to a reliable boot with all the cores enabled? Best, Adam

  Hello, I have x64 Windows 7 running on an ASUS M50VM. The DVD drive works completely unreliably if not at all. But the story is not that simple so bear with me...here are the gory details. When I first got the machine it came with Windows XP and I upgraded it to Windows Vista X64 and the DVD worked fine. When Windows 7 RC2 came out I tried it on a Virtual Machine and I liked it so much that I upgraded the machine to Win7 RC1. The DVD worked fine. Of course, RC1 was going to start spontaneously rebooting, so when Windows 7 was released I DID A CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 7. Just to clarify...by clean install I mean I did a FORMAT of the HARD DRIVE and INSTALLED it from scratch. EVER since then the DVD mostly doesn't work. I can sometime read from disk but that will often hang. (Please see my description below of HANG for details.) CD or DVD writes ALWAYS fail with a HANG (I have done a successful write only one time.) Here is what I mean by HANG... *Explorer Window is unresponsive. *Any software accessing the DVD drive is unresponsive. *The DVD tray will not eject. *Using a paper clip will eject but the disk is usually spinning real hard. *Attempting to shut down windows will fail. I have waited as long as ten minutes but the whole OS seems to hang. I do a hard shutdown. *Sometimes accessing the DVD (when it does not cause a HANG) will still fail and the device will actually seem to disappear from the system until I reboot. A couple of other things. It is NOT a hardware failure. It is the Windows OS. I know this because I swapped out my DVD drive with a friend with the same model...his machine is fine (he is still running Vista X64) and my machine still fails. For what it is worth. I swapped out my primary disk with the INTEL 160GB SSD. • Google Chrome freezing when I open Bookmark Manager

  I have an issue with Google Chrome freezing whenever I open the Bookmark Manager. Only that particular tab freezes, and I can still use the other tabs. No bookmarks appear, and I cannot type in the 'Search bookmarks' field. This seems to be related with my logged in profile. If I change profile, it allows me to login. I've also tried to login with my profile on different computers using Chrome, and it also freezes. However, I can still add bookmarks from the bookmarks tab. I just cannot use the Bookmark Manager. Any ideas what I can do? Is it possible to somehow export my bookmarks, reset the profile bookmarks (without losing other information like extensions etc), and re-import them?

• SSH login very slow on OS X Leopard

  My SSH sessions take a very long time to initiate. This applies for logins with and without passwords, interactive and non-interactive. I have tried setting 'GSSAPIAuthentication no' and 'IPQoS 0x00' on the client side, and 'UseDNS no' on the server side, but no dice. I'm really stumped and frustrated. The worst part is that it SFTP takes forever to establish connections too, making file transfer much longer than it would be otherwise. I thought the problem might be something with PAM, because of where the hang is in the sshd log below, so I tried commenting out each line one-by-one in the /etc/pam.d/sshd file. Some caused login to be impossible, some had no apparent effect. I can't really tell if PAM is stalling for other services, but I can say that su'ing into my account from another account with 'su -l' has no apparent delay. I tried creating a new user account, just to see if there was something wrong with my existing account, and the same problem persisted. Any ideas of what's going on? • Windows Storage Server 2008 hangs at logon

  We have a Dell PowerVault NX-3000 server running Windows Server 2008. Every now and then, when I try to login, the server seems to hang at the Welcome screen after I type in the password. However, all other services on the server are running fine - users are able to print off the print server and access their files. It just won't let me login. Any idea why this is happening? P.S.: I can't look at the server logs, because it won't let me login in the first place. Remote administration is also disabled on the server, so I can't use Remote Administration tools to look at the logs.

• How to diagnose repeated freezing of windows 7 (comes back alive in few seconds)

  I installed Windows 7 in a 3 year old machine, it installed successfully, took all drivers and running great, but what happens is every 5-6 minutes it freezes for few seconds... 30 seconds to 1 minute and then comes back alive. I checked Event Viewer, nothing matching the frozen timeline. I would appriciate any help on how to detect causing service/hardware. After it comes alive, everything runs normal, I did run task manager and checked cpu usage, at time it freezes just before and after that no task took more cpu or memory, it was like idle machine. No external usb drives or no devices, on board intel desktop board with SATA HDD, SATA hdd running in absolute good mode.

• Why are my USB 2.0 devices hanging Windows XP?

  Background on the machine I'm having a problem with: The machine was inherited and appears to be circa 2003 (there's a date stamp on the power supply which leads me to this conclusion). I've got it set up as a Skype terminal for my 2 year old to keep in touch with her grandparents and other members of the family - which everyone loves. It has a DFI CM33-TL/G ATX (identified using SiSoft Sandra) motherboard hosting an Intel Celeron 1.3GHz CPU, 768Mb PC133 SDRAM, a D-LINK WDA-2320 54G Wi-Fi network card and a generic USB 2.0 expansion board based on the NEC uPD720102 chipset containing 3 external and 1 internal USB sockets. It's also hosting a 1.44Mb floppy drive on FDD0, a new 80Gb Western Digital hard drive running as master on IDE0 and a Panasonic DVD+/-RW running as master on IDE1. All this is sitting in a slimline case running off a Macron Power MPT-135 135W Flex power supply. The motherboard is running a version of Award BIOS 05/24/2002-601T-686B-6A6LID4AC-00. Could this be updated? If so, from where? I've raked through the manufacturer's website but can't find any hint of downloads for either drivers or BIOS updates. The hard disk is freshly formatted and built with Windows XP Professional/Service Pack 3 and is up to date with all current patches. In addition to Windows XP, the only other software it's running is Skype 4.1 (4.2 hangs the whole machine as soon as it starts up, requiring a hard boot to recover). It's got a Daytek MV150 15" touch screen hooked up to the on board VGA and COM1 sockets with the most current drivers from the Daytek website and the most current version of ELO-Touchsystems drivers for the touch component. The webcam is a Logitech Webcam C200 with the latest drivers from the Logitech website. The problem: If I hook any devices to the USB 2.0 sockets, it hangs the whole machine and I have to hard boot it to get it back up. If I have any devices attached to the USB 2.0 sockets when I boot up, it hangs before Windows gets to the login prompt and I have to hard boot it to recover. Workarounds found: I can plug the same devices into the on board USB 1.0 sockets and everything works fine, albeit at reduced performance. I've tried 3 different kinds of USB thumb drives, 3 different makes/models of webcams and my iPhone all with the same effect. They're recognized and don't hang the machine when I hook them to the USB 1.0 but if I hook them to the USB 2.0 ports, the machine hangs within a couple of seconds of recognizing the devices were connected. Attempted solutions: I've seen suggestions that this could be a power problem - that the PSU just doesn't have the wattage to drive these ports. While I'm doubtful this is the problem [after all the motherboard has the same standard connector regardless of the PSU wattage], I tried disabling all the on board devices that I'm not using - on board LAN, the second COM port, the AGP connector etc. through the BIOS in what I'm sure is a futile attempt to reduce the power consumption... I also modified the ACPI and power management settings. It didn't have any noticeable affect, although it didn't do any harm either. Could the wattage of the PSU really cause this problem? If it can, is there anything I need to be aware of when replacing it or do I just need to make sure it's got a higher wattage than the current one? My interpretation was that the wattage only affected the number of drives you could hook up to the power connectors, is that right? I've installed the USB card in another machine and it works without issue, so it's not a problem with the USB card itself, and Windows says the card is installed and working correctly... right up until I connect a device to it. The only thing I haven't done which I only just thought of while writing this essay is trying the USB 2.0 card in a different PCI slot, or re-ordering the wi-fi and USB cards in the slots... although I'm not sure if this will make any difference - does anyone have any experience that would suggest this might work? Other thoughts/questions: Perhaps this is an incompatibility between the USB 2.0 card and the BIOS, would re-flashing the BIOS with a newer version help? Do I need to be able to identify the manufacturer of the motherboard in order to be able to find a BIOS edition specific for this motherboard or will any version of Award BIOS function in its place? Question: Does anyone have any ideas that could help me get my USB 2.0 devices hooked up to this machine?

• Mac: window manager frozen, have ssh access

  I have a Mac which regularly runs into a problem. The user interface stops reponding, showing a "frozen" user interface. The mouse is still moving but clicking does not trigger anything. This happens about once a week. Solution so far is to force switch-off the Mac and reboot it. I have ssh root access to the Mac. Killing (kill -9) the active application has no visible impact on what is shown on the screen. Any ideas on how to diagnose this? Is there a way to restart the window manager from the ssh shell? Killing /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Resources/WindowServer seems not to be possible. The Mac is an early 2008 iMac and runs Lion with latest updates. /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports is empty. Update: Problem stays after update to Mountain Lion. • Visual Studio 2005 Open Project Dialog Slow as Molasses

  Whenever I try to open a project in Visual Studio 2005 (Windows XP), my open project dialog become slow as molasses - navigating down one level of folders typically takes almost 60 seconds. Finding the project and opening it can take up 4-5 minutes, which is just ridiculous. I've checked the open project dialogs of other programs - only VS2005 is acting this way. What could be causing this problem and how do I go about solving it (apart from reinstalling VS2005 / windows) (Edit: Even VS2008 on the same machine does not have this problem. • Crashes and freezes after fixing "BOOTMGR is missing" error

  I came back from a 3-day weekend to a computer that was off. I leave my PC on 24/7, so this was odd. Turn it on to get the dreaded "BOOTMGR is missing" screen. Two attempts at Windows Recovery and it booted into Windows fine. After an hour or so, I get a frozen Chrome and my start bar disappears. Ctrl+Alt+Del brings up an error box telling me that Ctrl+Alt+Del failed to work properly. Clicking on any open application triggers an error (I can't recall the error now, but it essentially just said that the application couldn't be found running or something along those lines). I restart, and again, the same thing happens after a while of use. I turn it on, install the 47 updates I have or so, and then restart it. After a while of use (under an hour), it just freezes completely. My thoughts are: SSDs, RAM or PS. The only thing out of the ordinary is that there is a fan in the case that is now making noise whereas the case has previously been completely silent. I have no reason to believe this is anything more then correlation, but felt it is worth mentioning. I believe it MAY be the SSDs simply because of the BOOTMGR error, but not sure how to test that theory. My belief that it may be the RAM is simply from experience with frozen machines. I haven't had the time to memtest it, but will. The PS being the culprit is something I've picked up by reading similar threads on various forums, and it seems plausible. I am unsure how to test this though. ANY insight whatsover would be greatly appreciated!

• Visual Studio 2008 freeze after save

  I recently added about a dozen classes from another solution into my current solution in Visual Studio. After adding these classes, Visual Studio started freezing for about 10 seconds whenever I Save. The cursor disappears and mouse clicks and keys do nothing. Some interesting points: Even after I removed the classes, the freezing behavior is still there. Freezing occurs whether I've made changes to the code or not. This behavior ONLY seems to affect this particular version of this solution. No other solutions exhibit this behavior. Older versions of this solution are not affected. In Sysinternals Process Explorer, whenever I save in Visual Studio, the I/O bytes graph jumps from 0 to 2MB for about 5 seconds, then drops to about 1 MB for a split second, then jumps back to 2MB for another 5 seconds. Processor use goes up to about 3-5% during this time. Here are the details of my setup: C# Silverlight project (maybe 20 classes), .NET version 3.5 SP1, Visual Studio 2008 v9.0.30729 SP1. • Ubuntu server 9.10 freezes up after ~10 minutes

  I just upgraded my Ubuntu server from 9.04 to 9.10 and after about 10 minutes it locks up. It won't respond to ping, can't ssh in and the terminal doesn't accept keyboard input. It does not have X installed. I then reformatted and installed it from scratch with the same results. There are two hard drives, the first is for the OS and the second is for media. The second has not changed, it is an ext3 formatted drive with one partition. I stopped random services (samba, ushare, transmission-daemon) to see if they were causing the issue, but it still locked up. I did a watch "dmesg|tail" until it locked up, but I didn't see anything. How can I troubleshoot this further? I don't want to downgrade. Machine specs: Dell Dimension 3000 Pentium 4 @3GHz 512M RAM

  Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed? Thanks in advance for your answers.
