  How do I prevent my users from accessing directly pages meant for ajax calls only? Passing a key during ajax call seems like a solution, whereas access without the key will not be processed. But it is also easy to fabricate the key, no? Curse of View Source... p/s: Using Apache as webserver. EDIT: To answer why, I have jQuery ui-tabs in my index.php, and inside those tabs are forms with scripts, which won't work if they're accessed directly. Why a user would want to do that, I don't know, I just figure I'd be more user friendly by preventing direct access to forms without validation scripts.

  I'm looking into the various methods of rate limiting the Django admin login to prevent dictionary attacks. One solution is explained here: simonwillison.net/2009/Jan/7/ratelimitcache/ However, I would prefer to do the rate limiting at the web server side, using Nginx. Nginx's limit_req module does just that - allowing you to specify the maximum number of requests per minute, and sending a 503 if the user goes over: http://wiki.nginx.org/NginxHttpLimitReqModule Perfect! I thought I'd cracked it until I realised that Django admin's login page is not in a consistent place, eg /admin/blah/ gives you a login page at that URL, rather than bouncing to a standard login page. So I can't match on the URL. Can anyone think of another way to know that the admin page was being displayed (regexp the response HTML?)

• How do I prevent duplicate entrys to mySQL?

  On my site, I have a form that users fill out to become a member. They fill out name, bday, email, etc. Then when they click submit, the data gets into mySQL. But sometimes when a user clicks submit many times or refreshes the page, the data gets inputted to the database more than once. How can I prevent this? Is there a code I can use to only let one set of data get into the database? This is also a problem in my comment section. I allow uses to put comments on people's profiles. But when they abuse the refresh button or submit button, I get like 10 of the same comments. Thanks.

  Hi all, I'm building an application that is a kind of registry. Think about the dictionary: you lookup for a word and it return something if the word is founded. Now, that registry is going to store valuable informations about companies, and some could be tempted to get the complete listing. My application use EJB 3.0 that replies to WS. So I was thinking about permits a maximum of 10 query per IP address per day. Storing the IP address and a counter on a table that would be empty by a script every night. Is it a good idea/practice to do so? If yes, how can I get the IP address on the EJB side? Is there a better way to prevent something to get all the data from my database? I've also though about CAPTCHA but I think it's a pain for the user, and sometime, they are difficult to read even for real human. Hope it's all clear since I'm not english... Thanks Alain

• Prevent Ruby on Rails from sending the session header

  How do I prevent Rails from always sending the session header (Set-Cookie). This is a security problem if the application also sends the Cache-Control: public header. My application touches (but does not modify) the session hash in some/most actions. These pages display no private content so I want them to be cacheable - but Rails always sends the cookie header, no matter if the sent session hash is different from the previous or not. What I want to achieve is to only send the hash if it is different from the one received from the client. How can you do that? And probably that fix should also go into official Rails release? What do you think?

  I have the following Python code using Genshi (simplified): with open(pathToHTMLFile, 'r') as f: template = MarkupTemplate(f.read()) finalPage = template.generate().render('html', doctype = 'html') The source HTML file contains entities such as &copy;, &trade; and &reg;. Genshi replaces these with their UTF-8 character, which causes problems with the viewer (the output is used as a stand-alone file, not a response to a web request) that eventually sees the resulting HTML. Is there any way to prevent Genshi from parsing these entities? The more common ones like &amp; are passed through just fine.

  I've used the PHP MVC framework Symfony to build an on-demand web app. It has an annoying bug - the session expires after about 15-30 minutes of inactivity. There is a config directive to prevent session expiration but it does not work. Even workarounds such as this one did not help me. I intend not to migrate to Symfony 1.1 (which fixes this bug) in the foreseeable future. Has anyone been there and solved it? I would be most grateful for a hint or two!

• How to prevent Windows XP from stealing my input Ctrl-Space which is meant for Emacs

  I am learning and using Emacs. What I found annoying is that Ctrl-Space input will be stolen by Windows XP to switch the language bar instead of setting the mark in Emacs. The "language bar" is the native input languages selection such as Chinese keyboard other than English keyboard. Is there a way to temporarily prevent XP from stealing it? I have disabled the language bar from "Regional and language options" from Control Panel but the problem still exists. It doesn't happen on my Windows 2000 desktop at office but it happens on my work Windows XP laptop. Thank you very much.

  Hi as corollary to this question I wanted to ask if you know how to prevent the poping of dialogue either to ask for password or to ask to insert a certificate. We are currently building a system where we have to use the windows keystore to get certificates that are stored on USB token containing both reader and certificate. Unlike the original question we do not experience problems when loading the keystore but when we are accessing it. If there is only a single certificate in the keystore no problem, we get the appropriate password popup at the appropriate time and that's it. However if a second USB key gets inserted in the system and later removed the entry remains in the keystore and from then-on every time we try to access information in the keystore we get a popup to insert the key. This occurs for every certificates in the store for which the key is not currently connected to the computer. The system we are interfacing with that requires these certificates necessitates that we perform multiple cryptographic operations and to have these popups to come up every times is rather annoying to say the least.

• How to prevent a modal UIImagePickerController from rotating?

  I have an app that fully support rotation. I am modally adding a UIImagePickerController for which there is no support for UIInterfaceOrientationLandscape and I cannot get the controller to stay in portrait. In other words, I need to disable rotation for the UIImagePickerController so it stays in portrait, without removing rotation for the rest of my app. this seems basic, but I can't seem to locate it. How can I prevent this rotation? UPDATE As suggested, I tried subclassing with the following code: @interface UAImagePickerController : UIImagePickerController { } @end @implementation UAImagePickerController - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)toInterfaceOrientation { return UIDeviceOrientationIsPortrait(toInterfaceOrientation); } @end The line is not being hit at all with a breakpoint… i think there must be something funky about the UIImagePickerView

  Intro: I have a Python application using a Cassandra 1.2.4 cluster with a replication factor of 3, all reads and writes are done with a consistency level of 2. To access the cluster I use the CQL library. The Cassandra cluster is running on rackspace's virtual servers. The problem: From time to time one of the nodes can become slower than usual, in this case I want to be able to detect this situation and prevent making requests to the slow node and if possible to stop using it at all (this should theoretically be possible since the RF is 3 and the CL is 2 for every single request). The questions: What's the best way of detecting the slow node from a Python application? Is there a way to stop using one of the Cassandra nodes from Python in this scenario without human intervention? Thanks in advance!

• Prevent OCUnit tests from running when compilation fails

  I'm using Xcode 3.2.2 and the built in OCUnit test stuff. One problem I'm running into is that every time I do a build my unit tests are run, even if the build failed. Let's say I make a syntax error in one of my tests. The test fails to compile and the last successful compilation of the unit tests are run. The same thing happens if one of the dependent targets fail to build - the tests are still run. Which is obviously not what I want. How can I prevent the tests from running if the build fails? If this is not possible then I'd rather have the tests never run automatically, is that possible? Sorry if this is obvious, I'm an Xcode noob. Should I be using a better unit testing framework?

• Prevent Django from redirecting to add trailing slash

  UPDATED: Sorry, it looks like it's Apache that's rewriting it for some reason, not Django. I'll investigate further and post my findings. I need to add a /xmlrpc.php to my Byteflow installation to handle an application that is written for PHP blog engines and uses this hardcoded path. For some reason Byteflow appends a slash to this URL using a 301 Moved Permanently redirect, which breaks the application. It does not do so for the /robots.txt that is configured in a similar way. Relevant lines from the project urls.py: url(r'^xmlrpc.php$', 'django_xmlrpc.views.xmlrpc_handler'), url(r'^robots.txt$', include('robots.urls')), I read that the behavior was changed in the Django codebase in commit 6852 (in 2007) to prevent redirects being done for urls that have been explicitly configured not to contain any trailing slashes. I'm using Django 1.1. I assume that once I have fixed this problem, I should be able to use this application with Byteflow, because the application uses the MetaWeblog XML-RPC API. Any clue?

These validators can send back either Severity.SEVERITY_ERROR or Severity.SEVERITY_WARN messages, as illustrated: if (!isInMainFamily) { FacesMessage message = new FacesMessage(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_WARN, "You should make sure to tag your competency in at least one main category", null); throw new ValidatorException(message); } However, SEVERITY_WARN messages are not blocking for me. They are just a way to tell the user they should correct their input, but won't prevent them from submitting the form and saving their data. However, it seems that throwing any kind of ValidatorException flags the FacesContext as "validationFailed", which then prevents the submission of the form. Is there a way to get around this?   Hi Is it possible to prevent the _doPostBack() call getting rendered on a button? I would like add some custom logic prior to calling the postback. I have added an onClick event to the button e.g. <button id="manualSubmit" runat="server" class="manual-submit" onclick="$('#jeweller-form').hide();" /> However, this just gets rendered inline before the _doPostBack() But the postback gets fired before the jQueryHide takes place I would like to call my own JS function then manually trigger the postback any ideas?

  This is a tricky one. I am "emulating" ZF Bootstrapping (surface appearance). Don't ask me why, call it academic interest. So I have a Bootstrap Abstract with a method "run" that iterates over itself to locate any methods prefixed with "init". The application looks for a user defined class which extends this class, in which the user can define any number of methods in this way. However, I want to prevent the user from being able to execute the "run" command of it's parent class, while still exposing the same command for the client code.   Hi all. We are using Spring Security 3. We have a custom implementation of PermissionEvaluator that has this complex algorithm to grant or deny access at method level on the application. To do that we add a @PreAuthorize annotation to the method we want to protect (obviously). Everything is fine on that. However the behavior that we are looking for is that if a hasPermission call is denied, the protected method call only needs to be skipped, instead we are getting a 403 error each time that happens.   I have this sample code: $myTrigger .click(function(e){ alert('click'); }) .focus(function(e){ alert('focus'); $(this).click() }) The intent is that I want something to happen when you click on $myTrigger. If, on the other hand, you tab onto it via the keyboard (ie, focus) I want the exact same thing to happen, so I ask it to click. The catch is if I click on it, it also focuses. So both alerts are going off. Is there a way to prevent the focus event from going off when clicking?

  Hi all, I have a login page in my android app. I want to prevent the user after logging in to come back to the login page. Also, when the user reopens the app, if he has logged in before, I want to go directly to the main page without having to go to the login page. What the best way of doing that? One idea I thought of is to save the login parameters in a cookie, and then, when the app is reopens, if the cookie contains some login information, I inflate the main page, otherwise, I inflate the login page.   You may have already come across some of my other questions related to question, but I was having an issue with a SplitView iPad app where my application:didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method stopped executing after I went into Interface Builder and changed around the structure of my apps interface. I couldn't figure out what was preventing my didFinishLauchingWithOptions method from executing, but then I removed a "view" object I had in my view heirarchy (shown below) and suddenly my didFinishLauchingWithOptions method started executing again. I've moved passed it now, but I'm still unclear why that would cause the problem. Any ideas why that "view" object would prevent the didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method from executing?

Does anyone know how to do this? due the answers i give you some more nfo: I have set the a and a:hover styles, in my CSS already. Now if JS is available on the clients machine, i want to overwrite the effect with a smoother one. (using jQuery color plugin) As mentioned by fudgey, a work around would be to set the style (using .css()) but i would have to overwrite every single effect specified in the CSS (see here: http://jsfiddle.net/raPeX/1/ ). I am looking for a generic solution.
