• PHP not working with hosting

  I have been playing with a php CMS site for someone that I am ready to deploy but am running into a couple problems that I assume to be hosting related. I have been developing and playing with it localy and deploying to a hosting environment friendly towards this specific CMS (joomla). I have recently been trying to deploy to a client's hosting and have been running in to some trouble. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been in contact with the clients hosting and have had them set up a mysql DB for me and enable php. Simple php was working but joomla was not able to create the config files it needed to run on this hosting. Therefore I havnt been able to successfully deploy my work. While playing around with some simple php pages I have started getting http 500 errors and now cant seem to get anywhere. This is a smaller hosting company that seems willing to work with me but I dont really know what i need to ask from them to get me working. My questions to you webmaster geniuses would be as follows: Given the situation I have described, is there anything specifically i should do to get my joomla/php site running on this hosting? What specifically should I ask my current hosting providers to do to help me get working? Thanks

• circle - rectangle collision in 2D, most efficient way

  Suppose I have a circle intersecting a rectangle, what is ideally the least cpu intensive way between the two? method A calculate rectangle boundaries loop through all points of the circle and, for each of those, check if inside the rect. method B calculate rectangle boundaries check where the center of the circle is, compared to the rectangle make 9 switch/case statements for the following positions: top, bottom, left, right top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right inside rectangle check only one distance using the circle's radius depending on where the circle happens t be. I know there are other ways that are definitely better than these two, and if could point me a link to them, would be great but, exactly between those two, which one would you consider to be better, regarding both performance and quality/precision? • Should I expect my team to have more than a basic proficiency with our source control system?

  My company switched from Subversion to Git about three months ago. We had weeks of advance notice prior to the switch. Since I'd never used Git before (or any other DVCS), I read Pro Git and spent a little time spinning up my own repositories and playing around, so that when we switched I'd be able to keep working with minimal pain. Now I'm the 'Git guy' by default. With a couple of exceptions, most of my team still has no idea how Git works. For example, they still think of branches as complete copies of the source code, and even go so far as to clone the repo into multiple folders (one per branch). They generally look at Git as a scary black box. Given the fundamental nature of source control in our daily work (not to mention the ridiculous amount of power Git affords us), I'm of the opinion that any dev who doesn't achieve a certain level of proficiency with it is a liability. Should I expect my team to have at least some understanding of how Git works internally, and how to use it beyond the most basic pull/merge/push operations? Or am I just making something out of nothing?

• Getting Windows Azure SDK 1.1 To Talk To A Local DB

  Just found this, if you’re using Azure 1.1,  which you probably will be if yo'u’ve moved to Visual Studio 2010. To change the default database to something other than sqlexpress for Development Storage do this - Look at this - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd203058.aspx At the bottom it states -   Using Development Storage with SQL Server Express 2008 By default the local Windows Group BUILTIN\Administrator is not included in the SQL Server sysadmin server role on new SQL Server Express 2008 installations.  Add yourself to the sysadmin role in order to use the Development Storage Services on SQL Server Express 2008.  See SQL Server 2008 Security Changes for more information. Changing the SQL Server instance used by Development Storage By default, the Development Storage will use the SQL Express instance.  This can be changed by calling “DSInit.exe /sqlinstance:<SQL Server instance>” from the Windows Azure SDK command prompt.

• Problem installing from Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32bit cd

  Older laptop currently running xp, only 128mb ram too. Is 128 just too small? But, 20+ gigs free hard drive and it's been defragmented. When I try to install Ubuntu from a CD I get the screen that says ubuntu and has the four red dots and then eventually goes blank and I just hear hard drive noises. Stays this way indefinitely (shut it off after half a day). Burned another cd, at slow writing speed too, and dl is from Ubuntu and get same result. Any help much appreciated!

• Sanity checks vs file sizes

  In your game assets do you make room for explicit sanity checks, or do you have some generally expected bounds which you assert? I've been thinking about how we compress data and thought that it's much better to have the former, and less of the latter. If your data can exceed your normal valid ranges, but if it does it's an error, then surely that implies you're not compressing the data well enough? What do you do to find out if your data is compressed as far as it can be, and what do you use to ensure your data isn't corrupted and ensure it's an official release? EDIT I'm not interested in sanity checking the file size, but instead, how you manage your sanity checks and whether you arrange the excess size caused by the opportunity to do sanity checks by using explicit extra data, or through allowing the data enough file space (data member size) to be out of valid range and thus able to be checked merely by looking at the asset in memory after loading.

• Program To Cascade/Tile Windows

  I have perhaps ten or fifteen windows open. I'd like a program which automatically resizes all the windows and arranges them in columns and rows across the screen (a grid formation), automatically figuring out the largest size for the windows so that they still fit. This isn't an "Expose" type program - I want the windows to stay resized. I am using OpenBox to do my window management and am otherwise happy with it, I don't want to find a whole new window manager just to solve this problem. The program Tile is almost perfect, but it doesn't know how to lay the windows out in a grid formation. Any thoughts? Thanks!

• When is the default storage rule not really the default storage rule?

  In 11g WebCenter Content (WCC) introduced dispersion rules in the vault and weblayout directory paths to better distribute content across the directories. The dispersion rule was based on dRevClassID. The only problem with this is that dRevClassID did not remain the same when you copied content from one WCC instance to another using Archiver like in a contribution-consumption scenario. This could cause problems because the web-viewable path would not be the same between the contribution and consumption instances. In the PS5 (11.1.1.6.0) release of WCC they addressed this by configuring the File Store Provider (FSP) so that all new content would use a storage rule with a dispersion rule based on dDocName, which would stay the same when content was copied to another WCC instance. To support migration from older versions of WCC they left the default storage rule unchanged and created a new storage rule called DispByContentId and made that the default storage rule for all new content. I only stumbled upon this a while back when I was trying to change the FSP configuration so that all content used a webless storage rule. I changed the default storage rule, restarted WCC, and checked in a new content item. To my surprise the new content was not created as webless. I struggled with this for a while until I noticed there were multiple storage rules defined in the FSP configuration. When I looked at the default value for the xStorageRule field in Configuration Manager, sure enough it was no longer default, but was now DispByContentId. Once I updated the DispByContentId storage rule to webless and restarted WCC all my new content was now created using the webless storage rule, just like I wanted. I noticed when I was creating this blog post that the default storage rule is also listed on the File Store Provider Information page, but I guess I didn't see that when I originally did this.

  At times, I can be an impatient customer. But I’m not alone. Research by The Social Habit shows that among customers who contact a brand, product, or company through social media for support, 32% expect a response within 30 minutes and 42% expect a response within 60 minutes! 70% of respondents to another study expected their complaints to be addressed within 24 hours, irrespective of how they contacted the company. I was intrigued when I read a recent blog post by David Vap, Group Vice President of Product Development for Oracle Service Cloud. It’s about “Three Secrets to Innovation” in customer service. • How can I upgrade to Lubuntu 14.04.1 withot a PAE kernel?

  On my Dell Latitude D800 laptop, which has an old Pentium M without PAE support, I was able to successfully install Lubuntu 14.04 from the CD. When I try to upgrade, I get the error: PAE not enabled Your system uses a CPU that does not have PAE enabled. Ubuntu only supports non-PAE systems up to Ubuntu 12.04. To upgrade to a later version of Ubuntu, you must enable PAE (if this is possible) see: http://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE I have seen the Communit Wiki page for PAE. The suggestion is to add forcepae to the command line options. When I do this, I get the same message. Moreover, dmesg does not indicate PAE was ever enabled. Is there anything else I can ry to get Lubuntu to upgrade correctly?

• What constitutes proper use of threads in programming?

  I am tired of hearing people recommend that you should use only one thread per process, while many programs use up to 100 per process! take for example some common programs vb.net ide uses about 25 thread when not debugging System uses about 100 chrome uses about 19 Avira uses more than about 50 Any time I post a thread related question, I am reminded almost every time that I should not use more that one thread per process, and all the programs I mention above are ruining on my system with a single processor. What constitutes proper use of threads in programming? Please make general comment, but I'd prefer .NET framework thanks EDIT changed processor to process

• First Windows Phone 7 &ndash; Mobile LOB App.

  So I spent a couple of hours yesterday building my first Windows 7 Phone Series. application.   I still can’t get used to saying Windows 7 Phone Series.   So I think I’ll just go with WP7.   I must say I’m really impressed.    Calling web-services a breeze laying out User Interface a very straight forward.   I had made called into Dynamics NAV using web-services in under 10 minutes. Working in XAML takes a bit of getting used to,  I’m not trying to-do anything too clever yet. One thing I will point out to transition from one XAML page to the next use this.NavigationService.Navigate(new Uri("/Primary.xaml", UriKind.Relative)); Going from Compact Framework this is equivalent of a Window.Show Its so nice to be able to talk nicely again, about Windows Based Mobile Development!

• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS won't install - never finishes please help

  Want to try Ubuntu after using Windows for 30 years. Tried to install it 5 times on a Lenovo X120e notebook and twice on a Lenovo M57 desktop. No luck, worse than what Microsoft puts you through. I burned 12.04 LTS to disc. It installs up to the "Who Are You?" screen, then stops. Accepted the recommended computer name and lower case user name. I chose "log me in automatically." After that there is no progress bar, no rotating or pulsing button, nothing to indicate the Ubuntu has not died or fallen asleep. Is that how it is written? Never heard of a program that would take a long time to install while a user looked at a locked, dead screen. I just bought the M57 desktop for my son. It came with Ubuntu 10 something. I wanted to upgrade to 12.04 but it crashed, twice, to a DOS screen saying the pc lacked a certain "init" file. Various help screen commands did not help. On the X120e, I thought a partial-failed Ubuntu install was causing the problem, so I removed the drive and deleted the Ubuntu partition and replaced it. But same result. After I fill in my name, accept computer and user name, the "continue" button does not appear to work. I can go "back" but not forward. I have waited torturous hours. It doesn't take more than two hours to install, does it?any It is my own fault because of the high expectations I had for a sensible, hassle-free installation, but I am immensely disappointed. • How do I change the volume control icon?

  I recently switched to gnome 3 (love it!), but the default icon theme was a little dreary and gray, so I switched that back to ubuntu-mono-dark. But now whenever I change my volume, I get this ugly pixelated icon show up. The forum says I don't have enough reputation to post an screenshot, but it's pixelated and ugly with these fuzzy straight blue lines that turn on as the volume goes up. I found identical images in the Humanity and Humanity-Dark icon themes (one example: /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/24/audio-volume-high.png). I tinkered with the images by changing their names, temporarily deleting them, etc. But it had no effect on the ugly icon. What file is responsible for violating the beauty of my desktop?! Once I find it, I can replace it.

• What is wrong with Unix/linux

  This is a genuine question motivated by Ideal Operating System When I moved from DOS to Linux in the late 90s it was an eye opener for me. Long file names, arbitrarily many extensions etc... Now I look at Linux and Unix and see all sorts of issues. Here are things I see which could be fixed. Too much depends on root, and rootly powers cannot be voluntarily delegated over several users. (I would love to give up my power to manager printers and delegate the job to another account) File permissions are very limited, and there is not much metadata to go with files. The "everything is a file" metaphor is not true, Plan 9 gets it right(er).
