• Unable to remove some unity lenses

  I removed the files, video, photos and friends lenses with the following command. sudo apt-get purge unity-lens-files unity-lens-video unity-lens-photos unity-lens-friends Although the corresponding results have disappeared from dash, only the friends tab has been removed. There still are tabs for files, video and photos, albeit empty. How do I remove these empty tabs? I use Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander. I understand that this issue didn't exist in 12.04. The directory structure of unity lenses seems to have changed from 12.04 to 13.10. Earlier the lenses were stored in /usr/share/unity/lenses/.   Somehow google has indexed some third(and fourth!) level domains that I had attached to my server temporarily, eg. my.domain.root.com. I now have these redirected properly where I would like them to go, however with a carefully crafted search one can still find them and I'd rather they not be exposed. My google foo skills have failed me in finding an answer, so I come to you wonderful folks: Is there a way/How do I remove sub-level domains from google search results? I have the site in google webmaster tools and verified, but all the URL removal requests I can perform append the url to the base url, not prefixed. And finally, how can I prevent this in the future?

  Is it possible to remove the "Search and launch" whateveritis from my "desktop"? I've actually tried both Desktop and Netbook modes, but it stays there in both of them. I'm not afraid of editing files in the ~/.kde dir, but I would be really disappointed if this is the only way to do it. [more details/rants] I was able to wipe out several things but I've ended up with a black window that's movable (Alt-click) but not removable. Beside being surprised by the performances, I find Kubuntu extremely unfriendly, and I can't find the logic behind the items of the interface. I've tried to search for documentation, but what I've found is not updated and doesn't include the Netbook interface.

  I installed Eclipse long time ago from the Software Center, but recently I needed a newer version than the repo one. Then I removed it via Software Center and installed Eclipse Kepler in /opt. However, the window opened is not called Eclipse, it is the name of an old program I made (Eclipse- GMM). However, that's not the main issue, but that even if I created a .desktop file it launches the same, having "two" eclipses in the dock, the actual program and the launcher. How can I remove Unity .desktop cache or wathever it is this?

I already disabled those key bindings under Keyboard - Shortcuts. This has no effect. I did not find them in gconf-editor under apps -> muffin . Does anybody know how to remove/edit/disable those key bindings ?

All bug reports here will be closed as off-topic Fair enough, and i don't have time to report bugs, anyway Nautilus actions doesn't seem to care about the bug, it was reported before no actions were taken. Thus I don't seem to care about Nautilus actions. My question is simple: I want to know is there any alternative to Nautilus actions, or even better, how to add/remove options from the right click menu manually (without using any other software).

• Can someone help me remove/fix ubuntu?

  I'm very new to ubuntu for starters. Whenever I turn my computer on, it opens to the GNU Grub terminal. It says it supports minimal Bash-Like line editing (I have no idea what this means). To work-around this, I used "exit -ubuntu", this then takes me to a separate page which I selected the Windows Boot Manager and click on the Windows 8.1 icon which makes my Windows 8 load normally. If I click on the other icon, being the ubuntu one, I get put back at the GNU Grub terminal and thats it. If someone could help me either remove ubuntu or repair it so that I can load it again, I would appreciate it. I had installed the most recent ubuntu version. Any other required information to assist I can provide. Thank you.

Cairo Dock is GREAT, but I'm left with one little problem that I'd like to fix: after installing Cairo Dock, LightDM includes two extraneous entries to non-working desktops. (The entries to working desktops remain unaffected, so I guess I could just ignore the extraneous entries, but...) So I'd like to remove/edit the extraneous entries in LightDM. I've looked and looked for discussions on how to do so, but haven't had much luck. Any suggestions on how to go about editing the login menu in 11.10?

  Looking in System Monitor I saw a process called geoclue-master. As far as I can tell, this reports my precise location to applications and the internet. This computer is sitting in the same office all the time so I have no need whatsoever for such a thing, and would rather have the memory and processor cycles that this unnecessary service uses up - however small - free for things that I do need and want. I could not find instructions for disabling and removing this service so I renamed the file, but then the calendar disappeared from the notification area. Is there a way to remove this service but leave the calendar? I'm using 11.10.

  I have a travel website. Just for information purposes, I had put a weather page. Now I realize that this page is increasing my overall bounce rate; because people who are looking for the weather forecast are landing on that page and getting what they want and exiting. What is the safest method to get rid of that page? Would it hurt my google rank if I remove it completely? Or is there a better way to handle this situation? I realize that around 21 percent of my daily hits are on that page. I would have been happy if my aim was to provide weather data for the location; however, my site needs to focus on selling hotels. So I think I need to get rid of this weather page immediately. What do you think?

I've followed various bits of help, including trying to get boot-repair to work (I just get error messages when I try to run the recommended commands). Please can someone tell me how to get rid of ubuntu? It won't recognise my .iso copy of Windows - tries to read the DVD and then just boots ubuntu anyway. • Working with Subversion the same as with Visual Source Safe in Visual Studio

  Hi, At work I just started using subversion with ankhsvn instead of visual source safe. I managed to integrate it well enough but it doesn't seem the same. Using VSS the following would happen: A user check out a file by right clicking and selecting "check out" or by editing it. If another user tried to modify the same file he would get an error. No 2 users could edit the same file at the same time. No fancy merging. No conflicts and no conflict resolutions. I understand the the philosophy behind subversion is different but is there any way that this behavior described above could be duplicated with subversion? There is an option in ankhSVN called "Automatically lock files on change..." but even if I activate this option when I edit a file it never gets automatically locked. Even if this option worked the other users wouldn't see the lock until they comited the file. They wouldn't get an error when they tried to edit it like they would in Visual Source Safe. So basically: can Visual Source Safe's behavior be duplicated using Subversion and ankhSVN?

  Since the vast majority of monitors are 16-bit color or more, including mobile devices, does it make sense to even consider web-safe colors when choosing color schemes? Or is it something that ought to be relegated to history as a piece of trivia? For those of you that don't know what web-safe colors are: Another set of 216 color values is commonly considered to be the "web-safe" color palette, developed at a time when many computer displays were only capable of displaying 256 colors. A set of colors was needed that could be shown without dithering on 256-color displays; the number 216 was chosen partly because computer operating systems customarily reserved sixteen to twenty colors for their own use; it was also selected because it allows exactly six shades each of red, green, and blue (6 × 6 × 6 = 216). The list of colors is often presented as if it has special properties that render them immune to dithering. In fact, on 256-color displays applications can set a palette of any selection of colors that they choose, dithering the rest.   This question made me question a practice I had been following for years. For thread-safe initialization of function-local static const objects I protect the actual construction of the object, but not the initialization of the function-local reference referring to it. Something like this: namspace { const some_type& create_const_thingy() { lock my_lock(some_mutex); static const some_type the_const_thingy; return the_const_thingy; } } void use_const_thingy() { static const some_type& the_const_thingy = create_const_thingy(); // use the_const_thingy } The idea is that locking takes time, and if the reference is overwritten by several threads, it won't matter. I'd be interested if this is safe enough in practice? safe according to The Rules? (I know, the current standard doesn't even know what "concurrency" is, but what about trampling over an already initialized reference? And do other standards, like POSIX, have something to say that's relevant to this?) For the inquiring minds: Many such function-local static const objects I used are maps which are initialized from const arrays upon first use and used for lookup. For example, I have a few XML parsers where tag name strings are mapped to enum values, so I could later switch over the tags enum values.

  This must be a fairly common occurrence where I have a map and wish to thread-safely expose its key set: public MyClass { Map<String,String> map = // ... public final Set<String> keys() { // returns key set } } Now, if my "map" is not thread-safe, this is not safe: public final Set<String> keys() { return map.keySet(); } And neither is: public final Set<String> keys() { return Collections.unmodifiableSet(map.keySet()); } So I need to create a copy, such as: public final Set<String> keys() { return new HashSet(map.keySet()); } However, this doesn't seem safe either because that constructor traverses the elements of the parameter and add()s them. So while this copying is going on, a ConcurrentModificationException can happen. So then: public final Set<String> keys() { synchronized(map) { return new HashSet(map.keySet()); } } seems like the solution. Does this look right?

• Virus ridden computer freezes on startup - can't access safe mode

  Someone whom I love but who cannot be trusted with a live internet connection downloaded a particularly nasty virus that in turn downloaded a variety of unknown other viruses onto my home computer. The computer now freezes completely a few seconds after reaching the desktop and is unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse command. There are videos of my little kid on this hard drive that are not backed up and that I cannot bear to lose. But if I could get in there long enough to copy them off to an external drive I would have no problem doing a clean windows install to fix the problem; everything else is backed up online but the videos were too large. Normally I would start by going into safe mode but I have a large Dell monitor that doesn't show anything until the welcome screen appears. I think that I have gotten into the setup screen once or twice by mashing keys before I can see anything, but this monitor doesn't support that so I can't see what I'm doing to get it to boot from CD or anything else. I'm at my wits end. Any advice?

• Safe to remove Python2.6 files?

  I'm using Linux Mint 11 (will upgrade soon), and I've noticed that, even though I don't have any python2.6 packages installed with apt, there's a bunch of residual python2.6 files scattered around my drive, including, but not limited to, dist-packages in /usr/lib/python2.6 and various /usr/share stuff. Is there any way to test if these files are still being used? I'm tempted to sudo rm -rf the lot of them, but I'm scared it'll break stuff. Also, does anyone have any idea where these files could have come from? I believe I had python2.6 installed once upon a time, but I made sure to --purge them, so there shouldn't be any trace of them left, right? EDIT: after using a quick script to check all of the files, it appears most of them belong to important packages, so I won't try weeding out the few which I know are probably useless. Although I am curious why so many packages have python2.6 files when I don't even have it installed. • Windows 7 BSOD, safe mode working,

  I need help getting my dualboot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 to work, and since I'm not to experienced with computers I've been pretty dumb. Here's what I've done, quite shortend though: First removed a Ubuntu 10.04 partion, and replaced bootloader using EasyBCD Installed Ubuntu 12.04 on same partion as before Decided I need more space so I shrinked my C: partion (Windows partion) using Here, after rebooting my computer, I was stuck a grub rescue, when booting up the computer I fixed that by using SuperGrubDisk Rescatux and then using my Windows Vista install disk to repair the computer (computer is using Windows 7) I know re-installed Ubuntu 12.04 on the linux partion and got the GRUB-bootloader working Then, after using my computer for several hours, I installed beta drivers (version 304.79) for my GeForce GTS 240 and then rebooted my computer. At the first boot (after reboot) my computer just crashed, and here I am When trying to boot Windows 7 now I get a Blue Screen Of Death. I can though boot in to safe mode with everything working. I have uninstalled the beta drivers and installed the same one as before but still the same problem. I have tried all the commands in Bootrec.exe and none is working. I can't neither find an OS when using Bootrec.exe/ScanOs. I have also tried running: sfc/scannow and that comes out clean. Short: My harddrive and files seems to be intact but when booting I get bluescreen. I can though boot in to safemode with everything working. But, what about /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda5? When I tried to mount /dev/sda2, it said that I needed to specify the file system, which according to the table, is nonexistent. So, is it safe to format this with, say ext4 and mount it? Also, when I tried to mount /dev/sd5, it gave me this error: mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member' I assume it is NOT save to reformat this. If I'm wrong, then that would be great, because I could save some space. Please let me know either way. Thanks in advance! • Removing a malware that sets up as a system driver

  Hello, I recently tried to fix up my mother's computer which has some serious malwares. One of them apparently registered itself as system driver (tjbijkoq.sys if that can help) and after running a malware suppression tool, the computer won't boot anymore, complaining about a "critical driver that is missing". I think deleting the matching entry in the registry would just solve the problem, but obviously I can't boot up the computer (even in safe mode) to fix it. Do you guys have any experience with such an issue and how to solve this ? Thank you very much. The operating system is Windows Vista 32 bits Professional

  We are using TfsDeployer and PowerShell script to remove the folders ising Remove-Item before deployment of a new version. We are using unlocker to manually kill locking application, (it’s usually w3wp), but I prefer to find automated solution. Another (not ideal) option is to-suppress-powershell-errors get-childitem -recurse -force -erroraction silentlycontinue Any suggestions are welcome.
