• Are there any multiple desktops software for Vista? (similar to what is included in GNOME and KDE)

  In GNOME and KDE, (and from what I hear, OS X aswell), you have a feature called multiple desktops. It allows you to have multiple screens of apps running, without having the same number of monitors. Does such a program exist for Vista? I'd like around four desktops (one for IM, one for programming, one for browsing/email and one for other apps), and at home I usually have one monitor if using my laptop outside of home, or two if I'm using it at home.

• If DEP has stopped an app, is there a possibility to see this events in a log?

  DEP (Microsofts Data Execution Prevention) stopps sometimes some apps and kills it out of memory. As an administrator, may i see such events in a log and if which one? My experience is that there is no user information as written in Help about DEP, user reported only that the desired app disappears from their screens. This happens on a Citrix-Server running on a windows-2003 R2 64-Bit Server.

• Proper multimeter specs for fixing capacitors on your motherboard?

  When our motherboards or LCD's go out it is possible that the capacitors are at fault and can be easily replaced by removing and replacing the bad caps rather than buying new screens or computers. After all, replacing a cap is much faster than building a new PC. Along those lines some of the capacitors I see on my boards are over 900µF. What is the bare minimum you need in a multimeter to test for bad capacitors (or good capacitance?)

• Tool to organize and arrange various monitoring pages?

  we recently added a MacPro with eight (yes 8) monitors on it. We have various tools for monitoring our website (Chartbeat, Nagios, internal statistics, Jenkins, Smartfox, etc.) and they are currently free-flowing in various browser windows on the various screens. I'd like a better way to organize them into a more fixed system so (a) we can't just accidentally close out of a window (b) some automatically refresh (currently done through browser plugins) etc. Any suggestions?

• Use an audio/video file from a Linux laptop via USB to be played by Magic Sing ET-23H

  I am one of the technical directors of a regular karaoke contest event. For the karaoke contest itself, due to tight budget, we are using what one of the sponsors are providing - Magic Sing ET-23H . The video output of the Magic Sing ET-23H are broadcasted at two big screens that are being shown to the audience and event attendees. When a karaoke contestant provides his / her karaoke video, the video itself is in a readable USB flashdrive and is attached to the USB input of Magic Sing ET-23H. What really bugs me is that the interface of Magic Sing ET-23H are also being broadcasted at the big screen video feeds. The interface of choosing the video file is being seen in the Magic Sing ET-23H - also to the big video screens that are seen by the audience and event goers. I will post in the comments ( if my less than 10 reputation would allow me) the picture of Magic Sing ET-23KH USB input of the device. I always bring my laptop, Acer AS5742-7653, during the regular karaoke event. I'm using my laptop also for tallying of scores from the judges, and also playing audio files from contestants that did not provide a karaoke video. I personally am using different Linux distros, but I next to all the time use my Ubuntu Studio 12.04.3 64bit partition during the regular karaoke contest event. My question is this: Is there a way I can share a temporary video/audio file directly from the laptop I'm using, going to the Magic Sing ET-23H that can broadcast both the video/audio file? Just like how in Window's Avisynth AVS files, or VirtualDub's temporary avi file, or like using ffplay (of ffmpeg), etc. I have researched somewhat the matter and found links in SuperUser.com. Though I can only provide the links at the comments section of this post if my reputation of less than 10 would allow me. I have a hunch it is possible, but I have not fully understood the device being used at the event, Magic Sing ET-23H, if there are other ways for it to broadcast video and audio files besides its USB input. Any help to my current predicament is highly appreciated. Thank you. • Can't Move Windows to 2nd Monitor without Left Mouse and Cntl Key

  I have 2 very frustrating problems that maybe someone can help me with: I have 2 monitors (different sizes and resolutions) setup with the "Extended" monitor Win7 setup. My problem is this = I can not "move" a window from my Primary Monitor (larger and higher resolution on right side in front of me) to my Secondary 2nd monitor (smaller and lower resolution) with just selecting the title bar with the left mouse button and dragging it to the left. Windows 7 "snaps" it back to the left Primary Monitor when the window is physically in the 2nd window area as I'm holding the left mouse button. I can prevent this problem - by holding down the Cntl Key with the Left Mouse button, but this is extremely annoying to me. Also I typically "lose" focus if I try typing input on the 2nd monitor. Typing is erratic with regard to keystroke accuracy from my keyboard translated into input on the 2nd screen. No problem with typing input on the primary left monitor. I find this extremely annoying in Windows 7 and turning off the "snap" feature via the Control panel does NOT work for me. Win7 stubbornly refuses to move my selected window to my 2nd monitor without me "forcing" Win7 to do this with the Cntrl Key. Please tell me this is not a Win7 feature. Also on my system - Windows Key + Shift, Left arrow Key (pressed together) or the same combo with The Right arrow Key - don't do anything whatsoever. Widows Key with "+" however does maximize current window across both monitors, and I can "restore" it with Windows Key and "-" back to original monitor and size. I have tried various solutions including changing the resolutions of one or both of my monitors and sometimes "temporarily helps" but reverts back to the problem. Also if I swap the logical (not physical) layout so that I tell Win7 the monitors are setup in a reserved situation (Large monitor on the left, and small on the right) - this also sometimes helps for awhile - and is very strange and awkward to work with "backwards". But all of these solutions stop working. The only solution that consistently works for "moving" the screens is to hold the Cntrl Key down as I'm moving window with the left mouse selected on the title bar. Even that however, doesn't prevent the loss of typing focus for me on the 2nd monitor - while at the same time the typing on the 1st monitor is fine. Any help on moving my window screens from one monitor on my 2nd monitor without having to press the Cntrl key while holding down my left mouse button with be appreciated. Also any help on gaining typing "focus" into my 2nd screen with be helpful too. Thanks - John

• Different DPI on MacBook Pro and external monitors - what options are there?

  I have an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro, the two screens have different DPIs. Ideally I would like them to be the same, but as this is not the case, the best option I can see is reducing the resolution of the MBP screen to bring its DPI as close as possible to the external monitor. This introduces scaling artefacts on the screen, as LCDs don't look good at non-native resolutions. Is there a standard or best way of handling this, and if not, what other options are available?

• Capture VNC server packets and transfer to and fro to routing server using C#.net

  We are using Tight VNC server in our project for screen sharing, due to some security constraints we cannot directly install Tight VNC server on clients machine. So through .net windows applicaton we are invoking Tight VNC. Now this windows application should capture the screens(packets) that VNC server passes to VNC client and transfer them to and fro to routing server, routing server will inturn transfers these packets to VNC client, which is on another network. Is there any way that VNC server packets are caputured through .Net.

• Kill named running screen with -X only works after reattached

  Hello I am using ubuntu 8.04.4 and would like to start daemons like this: screen -dmS SESSIONNAME script.sh Then i want to kill these screens with -X like so screen -S SESSIONAME -X kill But, this does not work. Only if i attach and detach that session it gets kill'ed with above command. What am i doing wrong? I would like to not have to attach/deattach the session to kill it since i want to use fabric scripts that start/stop daemons remotly. - Thank you

• Windows 7 screensaver intermittently fails to turn on

  Context: Windows 7 Wired mouse and keyboard The Windows 7 Photos screensaver intermittently fails to kick in after 2 minutes. The computer knows that the time has passed because it will make my monitors display solid black screens. I already tried installing the latest mouse drivers from Microsoft and the problem persists. I also can't find any rhyme or reason to when the problem will happen. The problem happens even when Windows Media Player isn't running.

• How to get an unprivileged public status page showing in OpenWrt 12.09 or newer?

This may have been available on DD-WRT at one point (or still is), I can't 100% recall anymore. Unfortuanately, that now places them out of the viewable area of my screens! Is there some way to force a particular window into the viewable area? If it matters at all, this is on Windows XP 32b.

• Triple monitor setup in linux

  I'm hoping there are some xorg gurus out there. I'm trying to get a three monitor setup working in linux. I have 2 lcd monitors and a tv, all different resolutions. I'm using 2 video cards; a 9800 GTX and 7900Gt. I've seen a lot of different posts about people trying to make this work, and in every case, they either gave up, or Xinerama magically solved all their problems. Basically, my main problem is that I cannot get Xinerama to work. Every time I turn it on in the options, my machine gets stuck in a neverending boot cycle. If I disable Xinerama, I just have three Xorg screens, but I can't drag windows from one to the other. I can get the 2 lcds on Twinview, and the tv on a separate Xorg screen no problem. But I don't really like this solution. I'd rather have them all on separate screens and stitch them together with Xinerama. Has anyone done this? Here's my xorg.conf for reference. p.s. This took me all of 30 seconds to set up in Windows XP! p.s.s. I've seen somewhere that maybe randr can solve my problems? But I'm not quite sure how? • Recommended USB 3.0 PCI/PCIX adapter for older Dell

  Can anyone recommend a USB 3.0 adapter for my older Dell server? It does not have PCI express (PCIe) so I was looking for PCI or PCIX. I have been burned in the past installing "desktop" class drives on servers (i.e. blue screens under heavy load) so I would rather pay more to get something reliable. We are hoping to get better speed on our backups to an external drive, even 10% improvement would be worth it.

• Can't start computer, it only boots into BIOS update

  My son has a Compaq Presario computer running on Windows 7 and he has brought it down to me cause it's 'not working'. When I start up the computer I get a HP BIOS update that fails and keeps restarting with the same screens, only to fail every time.
