• Java simple encryption

  Hello, I would like to encrypt a textual (configuration) file stored on disk. Trying to use DES encryption I've had fatal error on client machines, I later found out caused because the algorithm could not handle accented characters (!) I suspect that was because I was using old packages (sun.misc.BASE64Decoder) - but I'm not sure that is the reason. However, I'm looking for a simpler solution - I need a really simple encryption (I know some people would not agree on that) - not RSA of 128 bit keys or so, just obscuring the text from curious eyes. It is really weird that I could not find on the web a simple trivial solution. Any idea, anyone ? Thanks, Ran

Note that I had to refactor iterating over a list but am now applying a filter within the iteration. • Sequel Migration not running up?

  Having some trouble with the Migrations in Sequel and could use another set of eyes. I am running a migration that looks ok but no table is created. It is definitely connecting because I can see the schema_info table has been created. -M 0/1 changes the version as you would expect but still no table. • zsh: command not found: ls

  I'm having a rather strange problem with zsh. When I start up my shell, everything - functions, environment vars, aliases, etc. - all work fine. I've created the following function and sourced it in zsh: clean() { for i in /tmp/* do echo $i done } Running clean in the terminal works as expected, in that it prints out all the files in /tmp/. Afterward, however, trying any command - for example, ls - produces this: zsh: command not found: ls I have several other functions that work just fine, which leads me to believe that somehow, that loop is causing the problem. At any rate, this is very frustrating and I would sincerely appreciate the community's eyes. Thanks!

• Client side page permissions - Javascript / jquery / cookies / other?

  TLDR Using plain HTML / Javascript. Want to block access to some pages (doesn't have to be super secure just to stop some peeking eyes). I thought of simply doing this by setting a cookie for each page they are allowed to visit with a value of true but thats a bit messy. Although it would work. Is there a way to set an array of values to a cookie so I can read the cookie and if a name of a page is in there then allow access with an IF statement or so on each of my pages. If they dont have the cookie just to replace my #content (entirepage) to "sorry no" etc. For example: $.cookie("Access","page1, page2, page3",{ expires: 1 }); Am already using JQuery, Jquery cookie. etc. I am up for anyway of doing this cookie idea is just an example So what do you think would be the best / most efficient way of managing this?

• Overlay of multiple colors in ImageJ

  Hi everyone, I'm writing a little plugin for imageJ and I am drawing several regions as an overlay on the image. I'm using this code: ImagePlus imp = getImage(); Overlay ov = new Overlay(); for (int r=0; r<regions.length; r++) { ov.add(regions[r]); } imp.setOverlay(ov); Where regions is an array of Roi. This works as intended and draws the regions in the (hurting to my eyes) standard ImageJ cyan used for overlays. I would like to draw one particular region in another colour, but I cannot seem to find a way to do it. I found that you can change the colour of the whole overlay, but I need two colours in the same overlay. Any ideas? Thanks in advance nico

  I'm working with websites written in PHP, along with many other programmers, and sometimes I have to deal with really awful code. Indentation totally messed up, curly braces in the wrong places, terrible whitespace use, it really hurts my eyes and actually makes my work harder and take longer. Is there a tool where you can specify your coding style and then it applies it to files? I'm sure there must be such functions in different IDEs, but I need an independent tool as I code with simple notepads like Notepad++ or the like. ( if it's such a function in Notepad++, I didn't see it )

• Master's in Software Engineering vs. Master's in Computer Science: which degree is preferred by empl

  I've been building software professionally for 7 years and am considering a master's degree. I understand the difference between these two degrees as simply: MSCS is the theory while MSE is the practice. I'm equally interested in both and would be happy with either, although I'm curious how these degrees rank in the eyes of a potential employer. I could see two views that a hiring manager could possibly take: a MSCS is loftier and has an implied knowledge of Software Engineering an MSE is more practical and has an implied knowledge of Computer Science In my own experience I've seen both MSCS degree holders than cannot program at all while others are among the best programmers I've met, so of course actual ability will depend on the individual. My question is about the "on paper" value of these two degrees when seeking a job. All things considered, is one degree more hirable, higher-paying than the other?

• Django/Python best practice template_dict

  Hi, After just been coding for about 6-9 months. I probably changed my coding style a number of times after reading some code or read best practices. But one thing I haven't yet come a cross is a good why to populate the template_dict. As of now I pass the template_dict across a number of methods (that changes/modifies it) and returns is. The result is that every methods takes template_dict as first argument and the returns it and this in my eyes doesn't seems to be the best solution. An idea is to have a method that handles all the changes. But I'm curios if there's a best practice for this? Or is it "do what you feel like"-type of thing? The 2 things I think is pretty ugly is to send as an argument and return it in all methods. And the just the var name is written xxx number of times in the code :) ..fredrik

• Website Sitemaps and <priority>, is it working?

  Hi, My "Privacy Policy" page is seen more important by Google than other really more important pages on my website. I'm currently creating a script to generate a sitemap, should I bother with the priority? How do you effectively assign priorities to pages? I consider one of my page important but the page have less content than another one less important to my eyes... but maybe Google bot will see it the other way around. If my degree of "importantness" differs from the one of Google, will I get penalized on the ranking for a particular page? Thank you for sharing your black art with us :P

I am a professional programmer and web designer for UCLA (do not set prices) and I have an old colleage that needs a website designed for his new company. He wants his website to resemble the LDH Energy website, layout colors and the flash movies (no image replication or verbiage, all that will be his) and he has one idea of a price and I have another.   Hello everyone! First time using this service for a question. I hope I am not asking something that has already been answered. I attempted to find an answer to my question with the search engine but i was unable to. My question is as follows: Using php, javascript, or anything actually, is it possible for me to track how my users are viewing the pages on my blog/website? Specifically, I want to track the time the user's browser spends reading specific sections of my content on the same page. For example, it would answer questions such as: How much time did someone spend reading the introduction to my article vs the conclusion? (located on the same page) Basically, tracking the "eyes" of a web visitor by looking at where the browser is currently scrolled down the page too. I'm sorry if i'm a bit noob! Thanks for any help with my problem you can provide to me! ^_^

In the transition from one unit to another - animation is performed in two steps (I want a continuous animation). Script code is not beautiful, very much repetition. In short - it looks not nice. How to improve the script to look at the animation and it was good fo eyes (if you have ready-made solutions - please note me). Update: If you set the animation smaller - that animation looks quite nice.

  Is there a way to instantiate a new PHP object in a similar manner to those in jQuery? I'm talking about assigning a variable number of arguments when creating the object. For example, I know I could do something like: ... //in my Class __contruct($name, $height, $eye_colour, $car, $password) { ... } $p1 = new person("bob", "5'9", "Blue", "toyota", "password"); But I'd like to set only some of them maybe. So something like: $p1 = new person({ name: "bob", eyes: "blue"}); Which is more along the lines of how it is done in jQuery and other frameworks. Is this built in to PHP? Is there a way to do it? Or a reason I should avoid it?

• NHibernate with or without Repository

  There are several similar questions on this matter, by I still haven't found enough reasons to decide which way to go. The real question is, is it reasonable to abstract the NHibernate using a Repository pattern, or not? It seems that the only reason behind abstracting it is to leave yourself an option to replace NHibernate with a different ORM if needed. But creating repositories and abstracting queries seems like adding yet another layer, and doing much of the plumbing by hand. One option is to use expose IQueryable<T> to the business layer and use LINQ, but from my experience LINQ support is still not fully implemented in NHibernate (queries simply don't always work as expected, and I hate spending time on debugging a framework). Although referencing NHibernate in my business layer hurts my eyes, it is supposed to be an abstraction of data access by itself, right? What are you opinions on this?

  We use both Examdiff and Kdiff3 to view Mercurial changes. Just add this to .hgrc: [extdiff] cmd.kdiff3 = cmd.examdiff = C:\Program Files\ExamDiff Pro\ExamDiff.exe And then you can type hg examdiff or hg diff3 to see a complete diff of all your changes. What I would like is to do the same to see a "before and after" of files for a given changeset that was checked in by someone else. I know you can type hg log to see all changesets and then hg log -vprXX to see a text diff, but that's too hard for my GUI preferring eyes. Anyone know how to the equivalent with the GUI tools?

• How to find good looking font color if background color is known?

  There seem to be so many color wheel, color picker, and color matcher web apps out there, where you give one color and the they'll find a couple of other colors that will create a harmonic layout when being used in combination. However most of them focus on background colors only and any text printed on each background color (if text is printed at all in the preview) is either black or white. My problem is different. I know the background color I want to use for a text area. What I need help with is choosing a couple of colors (the more, the merrier) I can use as font colors on this background. Most important is that the color will make sure the font is readable (contrast not being too low, also maybe not being too high to avoid that eyes are stressed) and of course that the combination of foreground and background just looks good. Anyone being aware of such an application? I'd prefer a web application to anything I have to download. Thanks.

  I have been spending quite some time lately reading Java6 Documentation; although I use Monaco as my monospaced font of choice, I am still searching for the best font which will please my eyes while reading the documentation text. I use both Windows7 at work and Mac OS X at home for the aforementioned and currently using (Monaco+Andalus) on Windows and (Monaco+Geneva) on Mac OS X, but would love to try out better looking fonts (specifically for documentation text, since I am sold on Monaco already). • Avoiding cookies while requesting static content

  I just did an audit of one of my web application page (built using ASP.Net and running on development server) using Google chrome's developer tool. One particular warning caught my eyes: Serve static content from a cookieless domain (5)! Here is my screen shot (http://yfrog.com/7eauditresultp) as well. I would like to know is it possible to avoid cookies for these kind of requests. I see that there is no cookie requests for javascript files as well. I it possible to avoid cookies in the header for these files as well? and why didn't the browser attach cookies for javascript files and attach for CSS and image? • Changing the background colour of lines in the stack

  I have just changed the colour scheme of my Visual Studio 2008 environment to have a dark backround with light text. This is so much easier on the eyes. The only problem is lines that are on the call stack... Those lines that are referred to in this thread here in visual studio some lines of code have light grey background while debugging These lines have a bright grey background, which against my light text means I cannot read the text at all. I have been through every single colour in Tools - Options - Fonts and Colours and cannot find one that matches. How can I change the background for lines on the current call stack?

For a safer bet, I usually separate that into two lines of code, assign first then check the variable, but now that I found this, I am just wondering whether is it good practice or not in the eyes of experienced javascript developers? • Internet Explorer changes brightness

  I have a very annoying problem with IE8 on Vista: My screen brightness changes when I view a page with IE. It slowly dimms brightness some 20% - enough to be noticeable. This seems to be dependent on the OVERALL brightness of the page viewed or of the amount of bright space on the page... sometimes it dimms down if the page is bright, sometimes the complete different, it dimms when lot of dark space is on the page. I know this sounds weird, I cannot describe it better. It takes about one,two seconds from on brightness level to the other. This ONLY occurs in IE - not in Word or any other application. Please help! This dimming is very stressfull for my eyes.
