  • ffdshow equivalent for the Mac

    When I was still on Windows XP, I used ffdshow to take care of all my video and audio codecs needs (with fully customizable subtitles). I did not need any other video player except Windows Media Player. Is there an ffdshow equivalent for the Mac? The objective is the same: that I shouldn't have to install any other video player, not even VLC, or the trial-bloatware-ridden DivX. I'm on Snow Leopard.

  • How to control linux workstations- with poloices.

    I am going to be administering a small network of linux based workstations for a charity institution (not all have the same distro- some are ubuntu and some are fedora). Is there something in Linux that is similar to group policy in windows?. For example I would like to standardize the wallpapers - have only firefox as a browser - default VLC as the media player etc etc. Thank you, any suggestions are very appreciated.

  • 500 MB Avi video from CD lagging/glitching when reproduced

    I created an extra cd with Nero Burning that contains both audio tracks (I can hear them correctly) and a .avi presentation (pretty big one, 540 MB on a 700 MB cd). The audio is fine but the problem is that when the video is played from the cd (with whatever media player: Windows Media Player, VLC, etc..) it lags/glitches/stutters. I'd like the video to be smooth, how should I burn the video to reduce this effect? I mean: what kind of compression/format and why?

  • How can I convert my mp3s to an iTunes-compatible format?

    I've got a bunch of mp3s that iTunes just won't read or import. After a bit of research, it seems the most likely reason is that they are somehow the "wrong format" and iTunes can't get its tiny brain round them. They play perfectly fine in VLC (obviously) and even Windows Media Player. Is there a way to "normalize" the data in some way, without losing any quality?

What is the best method to deploy software that has no .msi installer, but has switches for silent installs All I can think is to use startup scripts (that will do detect-install/uninstall/upgrade), but I was wondering if there are existing wheel designs in this area...   • How to Create Auto Playlists in Windows Media Player 12

    Are you getting tired of the same old playlists in Windows Media Player? Today we’ll show you how to create dynamic auto playlists based on criteria you choose in WMP 12 in Windows 7. Auto Playlists In Library view, click on Create playlist dropdown arrow and select Create auto playlist. On the New Auto Playlist window type in a name for the playlist in the text box. Now we need to choose our criteria by which to filter your playlist. Select Click here to add criteria. For our example, we will create a playlist of songs that were added to the library in the last week from the Alternative genre. So, we will first select Date Added from the dropdown list. Many criteria will have addition options to configure. In the example below you will see that we have a few options to fine tune.   We will filter all the songs added to the library in the last 7 days. We will select Is After from the first dropdown list. Then select Last 7 Days from the second dropdown list. You can add multiple criteria to further filter your playlist. If you can’t find the criteria you are looking for, select “More” at the bottom of the dropdown list.   This will pull up a filter window with all the criteria. Select a filter and then click OK when finished.   From the Genre dropdown, we will select Alternative. If you’d like to add Pictures, Videos, or TV Shows to your auto playlists you can do so by selecting them from the dropdown list under And also include. You will then be able to select criteria for your pictures, videos, or TV shows from the dropdown list.   Finally, you can also add restrictions to your music such as the number of items, duration, or total size. We will limit the duration of our playlist to one hour by selecting Limit Total Duration To… Then type in 1 hour…Click OK.   Our library is automatically filtered and a playlist is created based on the criteria we selected. When additional songs are added to the Windows Media Player library, any of new songs that fit the criteria will automatically be added to the New Songs playlist. You can also save a copy of an auto playlist as a regular playlist. Switch to Playlists view by clicking Playlists from either the top menu or the navigation bar. Select the Play tab and then click Clear list to remove any tracks from the list pane.   Right-click on the playlist you want to save, select Add to, and then Play list. The songs from your auto playlist will appear as an Unsaved list on the list pane. Click Save list. Type in a name for your playlist. Your auto playlist will continue to change as you add or remove items from your Media Player library that meet the criteria you established. The new saved playlist we just created will stay as it is currently. Editing a Auto playlist is easy. Right-click on the playlist and select Edit. Now you are ready to enjoy your playlist. Conclusion Auto playlists are great way to keep your playlists fresh in Windows Media Player 12. Users can get creative and experiment with the wide variety of criteria to customize their listening experience.   • How to Upgrade Ubuntu 12.04.2 to Ubuntu 12.04.3

    I am currently using Ubuntu 12.04.2 32bit. I installed it using LiveCD. Tomorrow, 23rd August 2013,Ubuntu 12.04.3 is released. I want to upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04.2 to Ubuntu 12.04.3 without using any LiveCD. Is it possible? If so please suggest me how can I do. Actually while using Ubuntu 12.04.2 I have troubled with graphics. My graphics card is Intel i845G 64 MB. When Ubuntu starts it works fine and smooth without any lagging, but after sometime it hangs for few seconds (1 or 2 seconds) with a garbage screen and becomes sluggish. All windows and browsers start lagging and also it is not possible to play any video in any player (VLC, Movie Player, Xnoise, SMPlayer etc..). I think Upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04.3 could fix my problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated..

  • Vizio costar mediatomb video loads but does not play

    I setup MediaTomb on 12.04 to stream videos using these inst The Vizio costar I am using as the player sees the server, and starts to load the MP4 video. The video however does not play, the player just exits after a few seconds. There is no mention of errors in the media tomb log. Update- I installed VLC to test the server and it works fine. Perhaps I need a different video server for the costar. I also tested the video by playing it via usb thumbdrive.

    in software sources i see a lot of links that don't link to lanchpad.net http://deb.playonlinux.com/ oreiric main http://dl.google.com/linuxearth/deb/ stable main http://linux.dropbox.com/ubuntu precise main i was wondering: can i add a regular download link in my sources.list. here is what i mean to do. this is the download link for notepad++(an example) http://download.tuxfamily.org/notepadplus/6.1.3/npp.6.1.3.Installer.exe i wonder can i add this(or an other) link to download the latest version of notepad++(or any software for that matter) and every time there is a new version of notepad++ i can install the latest via update-manager. this is exactly when adding vlc(A example) in the sources.list. And when the software. has been downloaded to run a command like wine npp.6.1.3.Installer.exe /S /Silent for silent installation.

  • How to reduce the tearing while watching videos?

    I'm using the Ubuntu 10.10 with both VLC player and MPlayer and already installed the ATI drivers. I watched the same videos on Windows 7 and Ubuntu. But on Ubuntu the images have a lot of tearing. I tried some newbish-configs on my ATI config tool, but nothing changed. I tried videos in mkv, avi, rmvb... and in all kinds of resolutions. I would love to see some tips or maybe a solution to this problem. (I have searched for similar questions but I didn't find any :/ ) The english is not my primary lang so sorry for my mistakes.     I live in Tanzania Africa and have been promoting Ubuntu for use by NGOs, Schools, and Friends. So far I've got a lot of positive feedback, but do have one huge problem. Internet here is both slow and very costly (up to $1,200 per month) So what I am looking for is a current release of Ubuntu which includes all the updates and popular applications already on it like; Gimp, VLC, Ubuntu Restricted files, Scribus, Inkscape, VirtualBox, Chrome, Audacity, Compiz, Blender, Ubuntu Tweak, Gnucash, Skype, etc... Basically all the 4 - 5 star applications. Does a hybrid DVD exist? I found links to one called Ubuntu Install Box 11.04, but not sure if they are truly legitimate.   • Fullscreen Still Has Taskbars at Top and Bottom

    I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and running the Gnome Classic desktop. Whenever I go fullscreen, the taskbars at the top and bottom which hold the menus, notifications, etc. are still visible. This only happens when I'm in a browser or trying to play a game. I've tried it in both Firefox and Chromium, and get the same result no matter which one I use. Videos I watch using VLC however do not have the bars at the top and bottom. I found only one post about this in the questions, but there were no answers that worked for me. I wasn't sure if commenting my problem into the 5 month old post would move it to the top where it could be seen, so I made this one.

  • How to convert unconvertable & unviewable .ts files?

    How to convert .ts files that can not be converted with usual WinFF, Avidemux etc programs? The .ts files in question are recorded from TV with STV digital cable digibox, viewable to me so far ONLY with that same digibox. All the video-playing programs i tried do not open the files at all (e.g. classical VLC and WinMedia player). All but 1 video converters i tried also are not able even to open or load the file into the program, therefore no conversion is possible. According to WinFF it can not find codec parameters during the conversion, evidently leading to nothing-happening???! HELP!, please.

    hello friends I have a samsung netbook n102sp atom processor 1.6, 2GB ddr3 ram and a intel 3150hd chiset chart, well the problem is the following the regular work pc has audio, lan, wi-fi reconose the video but I only lansa the resolution of 800 x 600 and I can not upload that's in the details of the computer I get into graphics (VESA: Intel ® Graphics XX) and I can not see videos because they only hear the audio and I use the vlc player I investigate intel 3150hd drivers and try to install layered but I was not please someone help me because it's an ugly work 800 x 600 and I can not see videos please, if anyone knows how to install the driver from Intel that are on the web please guide me when applied dpkg-s xserver-xorg-video-intel tells me that this driver installed ( XvMC "XVideo Motion Compensation" drivers for i810/i815 and i9xx and newer chipsets.)

  • HD flash video lagging on LG R400

    I'm installing Ubuntu on my friends laptop. An LG R400 with ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 graphics drivers. On Windows Vista which runs pretty slow the HD flash videos 1080p on Youtube vimeo and other places work with no problems, but on Ubuntu i can not really play videos above 480p Above that they are lagging. That annoys me because i know he will use them, and how am i supposed to convince him that Ubuntu is the way to go if it can not play the videos that windows vista can? Unity 3d is working fine so i think the graphics drivers is working, and when i download the hd videos and play as mp4 in vlc they also work fine. lspci -nn | grep VGA shows the following: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 Hope that someone can help me convince my friend that Ubuntu is rocking!

I would need to take audio as input to my computer, and send it to the remote server as a chunked HTTP request.   • Intel NUC Video Blur

    I recently purchased the D34010WYKH NUC and I figured this would be a great time to make the jump to a Linux based system. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04, and I'm having an issue with video rendering that is driving me mad. Essentially videos (all 1080p mkv files) appear to be slowly blurring, and its most noticeable when the camera remains on a scene for a long period of time. Then all of a sudden the video will correct the blur and the image will be sharp, only to begin happening again followed by more sudden and noticeable corrections. I have seen the exact same issue in both VLC and XBMC and across several different videos. I have installed the latest Intel graphics drivers, and searched the web but to be honest I'm not sure how to accurately describe this problem. I'm also quite new to the OS, so my experience tinkering is limited. Has anyone experienced this type of issue before? Can it be resolved?
