• What is lifetime of lambda-derived implicit functors in C++ ?

  The question is simple: what is lifetime of that functor object that is automatically generated for me by the C++ compiler when I write a lambda-expression? I did a quick search, but couldn't find a satisfactory answer. In particular, if I pass the lambda somewhere, and it gets remembered there, and then I go out of scope, what's going to happen once my lambda is called later and tries to access my stack-allocated, but no longer alive, captured variables? Or does the compiler prevent such situation in some way? Or what?

• Rails: Accessing the username/password used for HTTP Basic Auth?

  I'm building a basic API where user information can be retrieved after that user's login and password are correctly sent. Right now I'm using something like this: http://foo:[email protected]/api/user.xml So, what I need to do is access the user/password sent in the request (the foo and bar) but am not sure how to access that info in a Rails controller. Then I'd check those variables via a quick User.find and then set those as the username and password variables for authenticate_or_request_with_http_basic. It's possible I'm looking at this at the completely wrong way, but that's where I'm at right now. :)

• What is a good Java web crawler library?

  Hi, I am about to develop a crawler in Java but don't feel like reinventing the wheel. A quick Google search gives a whole bunch of Java libraries to build a web crawler. Besides that Nutch is of course a very robust package but seems a bit too advanced for my needs. I only need to crawl a handful websites a week containing a couple of 1000 pages each. Which open source Java library would you recommend considering: speed multithreading (or even distributed) extending it with new functionality active maintained and documentation?

• jQuery photo carousel (that looks like a real carousel)?

  I am on the lookout for a jQuery photo carousel that can display 3 images at a time, and circle through x amount of photos (and when reaching the last, starting with the first photo again). I made a quick mock-up of what i am looking fore - see it here. So there is 3 photos vissible, the middle one beeing the 'main' one and a bit bigger than the previous and next (left and right). Upon clicking the next/previous arrows the next or previous photo slides into the middle and thereby becomes the main photo. Any ideas to where i can find such a jQuery plugin/script?

When i update/modify the record, dateModified and dateCreated remains as is? What should i do? Obviously, i need to dateCreated value to remain as was inserted the first time and dateModified keeps changing when a change/modification occurs in the record fields. In other words, can you please write a sample quick trigger? I don't know much yet... Any help will be appreciated.

• Are there any configurable parameters to the gpsd?

  I use the gpsd daemon with my application. Sometimes, the gpsd ceases to work with no apparent reason (clean sky). Even the gpsmon monitor shows no fix. Are there any parameters which must be set? Or is it a hardware problem? I am surprissed that many satellites are visible but the "Stat" bitmap does not contain the bit 7 - ephemeris data available. Should i somewhat pre-configure my position to allow for correct ephemeris data? • iOS4.2: TouchBegan does not draw more then one circle per sensed touch

  Hi all, quick question (which might be a no-brainer for most here) :) My code below should draw a circle for every time touch that is recognised but although more than ones touches are sensed only one circle will drawn up at a time. Can anyone see any obvious issues? This method sits in the XYZViewControler.m class. TouchPoint.m is the class that defines the circle. Thanks a bundle for your help and redirects. • bgiframe appears in front of jquery modal dialog's overlay in IE6

  When I look at jquery ui's demo modal dialog (http://jqueryui.com/demos/dialog/#modal) in IE6 the bgiframe is appearing on top of the background overlay. So instead of seeing a black/gray stripe pattern, there is just a white background covering the page with the word "false" in the upper left corner. Is bgiframe broken with the latest version of jqueryui? Is there a quick way to repair this problem with bgiframe? If not, is there a plugin that hides selects when a modal dialog is shown? The ie6 z-index issue with selects is the reason I was using bgiframe in the first place.

• QML 5.3 iOS compilation of pure QML app

  I have an application written in QML. So, it comes to one risk that I wanted to ask about. If I convert the app to a pure QML application like the kind generated by the Qt Quick UI application wizard with no C++ and designed to be run with qmlscene will I be able to compile it for iOS when the time to port it comes or will I end up just converting it back to the C++ loader form? TL;DR Can pure QML (no C++) apps be compiled and run on iOS devices?

• Performance of fopen vs stat

  Hello, I'm writing several C programs for an embedded system where every bit of performance we can squeeze out will matter. Part of that is accessing log files. When determining if a file exists, is there any performance difference between using open / fopen, and stat ? I've been using stat on the assumption that it only has to do a quick check against the file system, whereas fopen would have to actually gain access to a file and manipulate internal data structures before returning. Is there any merit to this ?

• question about select() and range of for loop to read sockets

  Just a quick question about using select(). I'm using select() to read from multiple sockets. When I looked up examples on how to use select(), a lot of tutorials showed going through for loops and checking for FD_ISSET. The problem I have with those tutorials is that the for loop starts from i = 0. and checks if the bit has been set for the file descriptor i using FD_ISSET. Couldn't the for loop start from say your minfd (just like how you would keep track of maxfd)?? Or am I missing something?? Following link is an example of such for loop (look at the fourth example that he gives) http://www.developerweb.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2933 If that was the only example out there that used such for loop, I might understand it was a mistake or bad coding but I've seen several examples of such for loop of uselessly going through literally thousands of sockets and I'm convinced I'm missing something. • Fastest Java web templating language

I've never been a fan of JSP, and I've run into JSP-related performance problems in the past, so I was looking through the other options. I'm hoping that somewhere somebody's taken a census of the various options (maybe it'll have to be me) and pronounced which ones are quick, or at least which options there are.   Hi, I am a recent graduate and am looking to start a career in web development. Its kind of a catch 22 at the moment as I have a fair bit of programming experience from university but not really in web development and to get a job in web development a portfolio is typically required. So, I am looking to start a building a few application in order to have something to show potential employers. Im more into the backend stuff although am just as comfortable with front end development. Does anyone have any thoughts on some potential projects that would be both relatively quick (as i need to get a job soon!) to build but show off enough programming knowlege / skills to be impressive to employers. At the moment i am also learning to use the zend framework and I would hope to find work using such a framework (mvc). My initial thoughts would be things like a webmail app or maybe a custom CMS. Any ideas would be greatley appreciated.

• What's a simple way to web-ify my command-line daemon?

  Suppose I have a simple daemon type script that I run on my webserver. I run it in a terminal, with gnu screen, so I can keep an eye on it. That works fine (incidentally, I use this trick). But now suppose I'd like to make a web page where I can keep an eye on my script's output. What's the easiest way to do that? Notes: This is mainly for myself and a couple co-hackers so if websockets is the answer and it only works on Chrome or something, that's acceptable. • Javascript (JQuery) keyboard hijack problem

  I'm making a typing tutor program using javascript. Everything is going well except that if activates browser hotkeys which disrupts the functionality of the program. When I press the single quote in Firefox it triggers "Quick find (links only)" short cut and in all browsers when I press space the page scrolls down a page. Everything is working fine outside of this. • Use Google AppEngine datastore outside of AppEngine project

  For my little framework Pyxer I would like to to be able to use the Google AppEngine datastores also outside of AppEngine projects, because I'm now used to this ORM pattern and for little quick hacks this is nice. I can not use Google AppEngine for all of my projects because of its's limitations in file size and number of files. A great alternative would also be, if there was a project that provides an ORM with the same naming as the AppEngine datastore. I also like the GQL approach very much, since this is a nice combination of ORM and SQL patterns. Any ideas where or how I might find such a solution? Thanks.

• Use ASP.NET Profile or not?

  I need to store a few attributes of an authenticated user (I am using Membership API) and I need to make a choice between using Profiles or adding a new table with UserId as the PK. It appears that using Profiles is quick and needs less work upfront. However, I see the following downsides: The profile values are squished into a single ntext column. At some point in the future, I will have SQL scripts that may update user's attributes. Querying a ntext column and trying to update a value sounds a little buggy to me. If I choose to add a new user specific property and would like to assign a default for all the existing users, would it be possible? My first impression has been that using profiles may cause maintainance headaches in the long run. Thoughts?

• In eclipse, how can I create a shortcut for an existing command that has no shortcut binding in the

  In eclipse, the behavior of Ctrl+F11 is determined by preference config, and you could have either "Run last launch in history" or "Run current resource/editor" option available. But I'd like to have both of them at the same time, with an additional shortcut (e.g. Alt+F11). But eclipse doesn't provide the two commands in "key preference". Can I create a new shortcut that links to the "Run last launched" or "Run current editor"? It'd be even better if i could make a shortcut to show the launch history(the arrow beside the green little run button) Is this possible? could anyone give a quick hint on where to find resources to implement it? P.S.: Maven plugin's "Add dependency" common is another good candidate.

• Cloud Database Service Latency/Performance

  Hi All, I am running a heavy traffic site and our server is beginning to get to its limits, at the moment the entire LAMP stack is on one box (not ideal). I would like to move the database onto it's own box or onto a cloud service, but from my previous experience moving the database off the same box as the webserver increases the latency of reads quite dramatically slowing down the site. Is using a cloud service for this going to overcome this problem, because as far as I can tell its essentially the same situation (as moving it onto a separate box in my control)? In which case why is there so much popularity around cloud based database services at the moment? Are cloud based database services so quick that the latency of reads is so low that its almost like having it on the same box in the same datacentre?

• .NET Reflector and getters/setters issue

  I'm using an up-to-date .NET Reflector to disassemble an internal legacy app whose source code is almost impossible to recover. I need to find the cause of a nasty bug, and then possibly patch it. Reflector did a good job as usual in the re-creation of the project's structure, but soon I discovered that every property call was left "expanded" to its get_() and set_() method signatures, rendering the source code impossible to compile. A quick Visual Studio "Search/Replace" with regex solved these cases, but it's awkward. Is there a way to make Reflector behave correctly?

  I just have a quick question about the conditional operator. Still a budding programmer here. I am given x = 1, y = 2, and z = 3. I want to know, why after this statement: y += x-- ? z++ : --z; That y is 5. The values after the statement are x = 0, y = 5, and z = 4. I know the way the conditional operator works is that it is formatted like this: variable = condition ? value if true : value if false. For the condition, y += x-- , how does y become 5? I can only see 2 (2 += 0) and 3 (2 += 1)(then x-- becomes zero) as possibilities. Any help is much appreciated. :)

  Hello Is there a tutorial for migration from plain udp sockets (linux, C99/C++, recv syscall is used) to the raw sockets? According to http://aschauf.landshut.org/fh/linux/udp_vs_raw/ch03s04.html raw socket is much faster than udp. Application is client-server. client is proprietary and must use exactly same procotol as it was with udp server. But server can be a bit faster with raw sockets. What parts of udp I must to implement in server? Is there a "quick migration" libraries?

• 'script/console test' with spork and rspec not loading the whole environment?

  I'm trying to load up console to interact with some of my rspec mocking helpers. I expected that running script/console test would load an env similar to when I run spec. However, this doesn't appear to be the case. It looks like spec_helper is never loaded. Or, if it is, it's not actually running through the logic because spork has polluted it a bit. In short, is there a quick and easy way to get an interactive rspec party going?
