• What's the best way to apply a drop shadow?

  What is the best method for applying drop shadows? I'm working on a site right now where we have a good deal of them, however, I've been fighting to find the best method to do it. The site is pretty animation heavy so shadows need to work well with this. I tried a jQuery shadow pulgin. The shadows looked good and were easy to use but were slow and didn't work well with any animations (required lots of redrawing, very joggy). I also tried creating my own jQuery extension that wraps my element in a couple gray divs and then offsets them a little bit to give a shadow effect. This worked well. It's quick and responsive to the animation. However, it makes DOM manipulation/traversal cumbersome since everything is wrapped in these shadow divs. I know there has to be a better way but this isn't exactly my forte. Thoughts?

• Indexing SET field

  I have two entities A and B. They are related with many to many relation. Entity A can be related up to 100 B entities. Entity B can be related up to 10000 A entities. I need quick way to select for example 30 A entities, that have relation with specified B entities, filtered and sorted by different attributes. Here how I see ideal solution: I put all information I know about A entities, including their relations with B entities into single row (Special table with SET field) then add all necessary indexes. The problem is that you can't use index while querying by SET field. What should I do? I can replace database with something different, if that'll help.

• Is it valid to have more than one question mark in a URL?

  I came across the following URL today: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/inmarin/detail??blogid=122&entry_id=64497 Notice the doubled question mark at the beginning of the query string: ??blogid=122&entry_id=64497 My browser didn't seem to have any trouble with it, and running a quick bookmarklet: javascript:alert(document.location.search); just gave me the query string shown above. Is this a valid URL? The reason I'm being so pedantic (assuming that I am) is because I need to parse URLs like this for query parameters, and supporting doubled question marks would require some changes to my code. Obviously if they're in the wild, I'll need to support them; I'm mainly curious if it's my fault for not adhering to URL standards exactly, or if it's in fact a non-standard URL.

• Jquery SimpleModal flickers in Firefox

  I'm using SimpleModal plugin for Jquery and I have a weird problem with Firefox ( other browsers work fine: Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE). What happens is when I click on the button that launches the modal dialog, before showing the modal (and the fadeIn of the overlay), there is a quick "flicker", less than half a second. (It's longer on my slower PC). Weird thing is, it didn't happen in Firefox 3.5.2, but when I upgraded to 3.6.3, I got the flicker. Any ideas? • Need an alternative to two left joins.

  Hey guys quick question, I always use left join, but when I left join twice I always get funny results, usually duplicates. I am currently working on a query that Left Joins twice to retrieve the necessary information needed but I was wondering if it were possible to build another select statement in so then I do not need two left joins or two queries or if there were a better way. For example, if I could select the topic.creator in table.topic first AS something, then I could select that variable in users and left join table.scrusersonline. Thanks in advance for any advice. SELECT * FROM scrusersonline LEFT JOIN users ON users.id = scrusersonline.id LEFT JOIN topic ON users.username = topic.creator WHERE scrusersonline.topic_id = '$topic_id' The whole point of this query is to check if the topic.creator is online by retrieving his name from table.topic and matching his id in table.users, then checking if he is in table.scrusersonline. It produces duplicate entries unfortunately and is thus inaccurate in my mind.

I created a jsFiddle here where I have a layout, 2 regions and I instantiated 2 ItemViews and showed them in the layout's regions. • Simple XML parsing with Google Picasa API and JQuery

  I'm starting to look into Google's Picasa API for photo data, which provides you with a big XML file with info about albums and photos. I'm doing some quick and dirty tests to parse the XML file (which is saved locally to my hard drive for now) with JQuery and pull out the album id's, which are stored as "gphoto:id" tags, and display them in a div: $(document).ready(function() { $.get( 'albums.xml', function(data) { $(data).find('entry').each(function() { var albumId = $(this).children('gphoto:id').text(); $('#photos').append(albumId + '<br />'); }) }) }) I'm getting the following error in the console: jquery.js:3321 - Uncaught Syntax error, unrecognized expression: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: id This will work with other tags in the XML file (such as title, author, updated, etc.), but I'm trying to understand what's going on here. Does it have to do with the colon in "gphoto:id", somehow?

• How to implement a syndication receiver? (multi-client / single server)

  I have to come up with a system architecture. A few hundred remote devices will be communicating over internet with a central server which will receive data and store it in a database. I could write my own TCP/IP based protocol use SOAP use AJAX use RSS anything else? This is currently seen as one way (telemetry, as opposed to SCADA). Would it make a difference if we make it bi-directional. There are no plans to do so, but Murphy's law makes me wary of a uni-directional solution (on the data plane; I imagine that the control plane is bi-directional in all solutions (?)). I hope that this is not too subjective. I would like a solution which is quick and easy to implement and for others to support and where the general "communications pipeline" from remote deceives to database server can be re-used as the core of future projects. I have a strong background in telecomms protocols, in C/C++ and PHP.

• Is there a way to hide annotations in Netbeans or Eclipse?

  Maybe a dumb question, but it would be nice if there was a way to hide or collapse Java annotations when viewing source in Netbeans (or Eclipse). I'm not finding an option and a quick search didn't turn anything up. Is this one of those "you should never want to do that, code folding is a sin!" things? Personally I'd find it useful for annotated entity classes. All the hibernate / etc annotations are just fluff that I never look at once my mapping is working fine. It's similar to imports, really. (Yes, I can use XML instead of annotations, which I might start doing. But I was just wondering...)

  Hello, I'm currently dealing with customs messages Beans in Java. After filling in the Beans with different values, I want to produce an EDIFACT CUSDEC message corresponding to each message. For each attribute of a message Bean, I have the information to put the attribute in the right place in EDIFACT CUSEDC format. Thus, I am looking for a free tool (a Java API) which could ideally convert my full-filled Bean into an EDIFACT CUSDEC message. • why is internet explorer displaying my javascript pagination backwards?

  Here's a version of the code I'm using, stripped down to just the parts that aren't working. This is all written to generate some basic pagination with jQuery. In Chrome/Safari/Moz, I generate see spans, 1,2,3,4,...,etc When I look in IE7/8, I see etc,...,4,3,2,1 The string seems to be concatenating backwards!! This seems very strange to me, because there's not a whole lot going on in the code here, I can't figure out which bit could be causing problems.   Hello, quick question: I'd like to create some custom data types, but I don't think I'm asking the right question(s). There are "compound Boolean" values used throughout .NET, and I want to design some of my own. I've been using a series of Boolean variables, which works, but just isn't the same. Examples from .NET include: Color.Black Alignment.Centered [fontProperties].Bold* *I forget the actual name, but you get the idea I want to make something like this: ColorSortQualities None DistinguishColor DistinguishNumberOfColors DistinguishColorPattern Once that's been declared, I could do this: if(searchOptions.ColorSortQualities == DistinguishColor) [do stuff] What is this called? • Optional attribute values in MappedField

  I'm new to Scala and Lift, coming from a slightly odd background in PLT Scheme. I've done a quick search on this topic and found lots of questions but no answers. I'm probably looking in the wrong place. I've been working my way through tutorials on using Mapper to create database-backed objects, and I've hit a stumbling block: what types should be used to stored optional attribute values. For example, a simple ToDo object might comprise a title and an optional deadline (e.g. http://rememberthemilk.com). The former would be a MappedString, but the latter could not be a MappedDateTime since the type constraints on the field require, say, defaultValue to return a Date (rather than a Date or null/false/???). Is an underlying NULL handled by the MappedField subclasses? Or are there optional equivalents to things like MappedInt, MappedString, MappedDateTime that allow the value to be NULL in the database? Or am I approaching this in the wrong way?

• Oracle Unique Indexes

  I was creating a new table today in 10g when I noticed an interesting behavior. Here is an example of what I did: CREATE TABLE test_table ( field_1 INTEGER PRIMARY KEY ); Oracle will by default, create a non-null unique index for the primary key. I double checked this. After a quick check, I find a unique index name SYS_C0065645. Everything is working as expected so far. Now I did this: CREATE TABLE test_table ( field_1 INTEGER, CONSTRAINT pk_test_table PRIMARY KEY (field_1) USING INDEX (CREATE INDEX idx_test_table_00 ON test_table (field_1))); After describing my newly created index idx_test_table_00, I see that it is non-unique. I tried to insert duplicate data into the table and was stopped by the primary key constraint, proving that the functionality has not been affected. It seems strange to me that Oracle would allow a non-unique index to be used for a primary key constraint. Why is this allowed?

• XNA or C# Pop-up progress bar for the LoadContent() method

  Hey people, We wrote a small game using Microsoft's XNA Game Studio 3.1. The LoadContent() takes a long time because, other than loading models, and config files, we're also running some one-time (per run) terrain analysis. We are not C# or XNA programmers... we're Java programmers, and want to be able to give the user some feedback that the system is loading. Preferably, this will be through a simple pop-up with a progress bar that will say something simple like "loading please wait". The progress bar doesn't have to be a 0 to 1 progress bar, it can instead be one of those 'back and forth' progress bars. I was hoping for some quick copy-paste ready code to just do that - as it is not a central piece of our project, nor do we have a need to delve into too much documentation. • Dealing with a badly formatted CSV file

  I have an exceptionally bad CSV file. Although I "solved" the problem in the end by manually writing scripts to process and reprocess this specific file I wanted to know if there were any other solutions out there. You have a CSV file that has all the fields terminated by | (pipe) characters. Running a quick check shows you that there are 53 fields in the file. The person who gave you the file claims there there are only 28 fields. Not all of the fields have information in them. For example there are five custom_field_{num} fields which may or may not have data. How would you get this into a database nicely? The ideal solution (and one I searched high and low for) would be to just throw it all into a table with no column names or specifications. Then remove any columns that were completely blank and then give them titles and specifications.

• Need help using the Windows IP Helper API & ParseNetworString in C#.

  I'm attempting to rewrite some C# web service code that uses the Windows IP Helper API call "SendARP" to retreive a remote system's MAC address. SendARP works great - until you cross a network segment as Arp requests aren't routed. I've been looking at the "ParseNetworkString" documentation after happening across its existance on StackOverflow. • Python 2.6 and 3.1.1, earlier version compatibility

  I ordered three books to start teaching myself Python - a beginning programming book, a computer science book that uses Python for all of its code references, and a book on Python network programming. Unfortunately, I was a little too quick on ordering them, because I hadn't noticed the version differences. The beginner book is for python 3.1, the CS book is Python 2.3, and the last is Python 2.6. The CS book is also oriented towards beginners. My question is, will the different versions be too different at this level for me to effectively use all three, or will I likely be able to get by learning from the 3.1 beginners book and then sort of teach myself from the 2.3 CS book, and be able to comprehend 2.6 code? That probably didn't make sense. I hope it did.

• Using Regex to remove Carriage Returns in a CSV file in Notepad++

  I have a CSV file I need to clean up. This is a one-time thing so I'd like to do it in Notepad++ if possible. The CSV file has two fields, one of which is wrapped in quotes. I'd like to remove any Carriage Returns from within the quoted field. I was trying to use this pattern but can't get it quite right... (.*)\"(.*)\n(.*)\"(.*) Also correct me if I am wrong, but I presume the "replace with" value would be something along the lines of: \1\2\3\4 Thanks in advance. I'm also open to alternate solutions such as a quick and dirty PERL script.

• Extracting an interface from .NEt System classes

  When using Visual Studio it is easy to extract an interface from a class that I have written myself. I right click on the class and select 'Refactor' then select 'Extract Interface'. Let's assume for a second that I wanted to create a ConfigurationManager wrapper and write some tests around it. A quick way to do that would be to extract an interface from ConfigurationManager by right clicking it, then 'Go To Definition' and then from inside the class select 'Refactor' then select 'Extract Interface'. Then I would simply create my wrapper class, inherit from my newly created interface, and then implement it and I have a great starting point for my wrapper class. However, extracting an interface from any .NET system classes is not possible, probably because it's just meta data about the classes and not the classes themselves (or I am doing it wrong). Is there an easy way to do what I am trying to accomplish? I want to ensure I am not wasting time typing what I don't need to be typing. Thanks

For ex. if the Content generated is : "A Quick Brown Fox" Then I need they string "Brown" to be in color Brown and "Fox" to be in color Red The Keyword-Color list is fixed and available to me at runtime. I have looked at the Advanced TextFormatting page on MSDN, but it is too complicated for me, also the sample in there does not compile :( I am looking at creating a custom control which can do this for me. • Getting Parent Layout in Qt

  Hi, quick question. Is there any way to (easily) retrieve the parent layout of a widget in Qt? PS: QObject::parent() won't work, for logical reasons. EDIT: I'm positive the widget has a parent layout, because I added it to a layout earlier in the code. Now, I have many other layouts in the window and while it is possible for me to keep track of them, I just want to know if there is an easy and clean way to get the parent layout. EDIT2: Sorry, "easy and clean" was probably not the best way of putting. I meant using the Qt API. EDIT3: I'm adding the widget to the layout like this: QHBoxLayout* layout = new QHBoxLayout; layout-addWidget(button);

• System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Debug() stopped working

  I'm working on a program which uses the System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Break() method to allow the user to set a breakpoint from the command-line. This has worked fine for many weeks now. However, when I was working on fixing a unit test today, I tried to use the debug switch from the command-line, and it didn't work. Here's what I've tried: I've confirmed that the Debug() method is really being called (by putting a System.Console.WriteLine() after it) I've confirmed that the build is still in Debug I've done a clean build I've restarted Product Studio A quick Google search didn't reveal anything, and the API documentation for .Net doesn't mention anything about this function not performing correctly. So... any ideas?
