  • Does it take time to deallocate memory?

    I have a C++ program which, during execution, will allocate about 3-8Gb of memory to store a hash table (I use tr1/unordered_map) and various other data structures. However, at the end of execution, there will be a long pause before returning to shell. For example, at the very end of my main function I have std::cout << "End of execution" << endl; But the execution of my program will go something like $ ./program do stuff... End of execution [long pause of maybe 2 min] $ -- returns to shell Is this expected behavior or am I doing something wrong? I'm guessing that the program is deallocating the memory at the end. But, commercial applications which use large amounts of memory (such as photoshop) do not exhibit this pause when you close the application. Please advise :)

    With .NET, I have "Thursday, April 10, 2008 1:30:00 PM" and I want "dddd, dd MMMM, yyyy h:m:s t", "6:09:01 PM" and want ""hh:mm:ss tt", "Fri 29 Aug" and want "ddd d MMM", and so on. It seems I should be able to use DateTimeFormatInfo in some way. I figured I can format the date with each pattern returned by GetAllDateTimePatterns, and when the original date string and the formated date string match then I have the format. Yet, I want to generate custom formats, not the standard formats. I want the format string. I do not want the date. I have both the DateTime value and the formatted string value for the date. I need <formatString> as in ToString(<formatString>).

  • Conky graph frozen in time

    Is it possible to plot a graph in conky? Give a function a set of values 0-100 and conky plots a graph similar to execgraph? What I want is to visualize how a variable changed in last week. For example, I'd like to make a graph of gold prices in last 14 days. One way I could do that is use "execigraph 86400 python fetch_price_of_gold.py" and keep my box up 24/7 and eventually I'd get a nice graph. But, unfortunately my box isn't up 24/7. Not to mention I'd have to wait 14 days after every reboot ;-) So, any other ideas? :-)

  • More GCC link time issues: undefined reference to main

    Hi Guys, I'm writing software for a Cortex-A8 processor and I have to write some ARM assembly code to access specific registers. I'm making use of the gnu compilers and related tool chains, these tools are installed on the processor board(Freescale i.MX515) with Ubuntu. I make a connection to it from my host PC(Windows) using WinSCP and the PuTTY terminal. As usual I started with a simple C project having main.c and functions.s. I compile the main.c using GCC, assemble the functions.s using as and link the generated object files using once again GCC, but I get strange errors during this process. An important finding - Meanwhile, I found out that my assembly code may have some issues because when I individually assemble it using the command as -o functions.o functions.s and try running the generated functions.o using ./functions.o command, the bash shell is failing to recognize this file as an executable(on pressing tab functions.o is not getting selected/PuTTY is not highlighting the file). Can anyone suggest whats happening here? Are there any specific options I have to send, to GCC during the linking process? The errors I see are strange and beyond my understanding, I don't understand to what the GCC is referring. I'm pasting here the contents of main.c, functions.s, the Makefile and the list of errors.   • Objects in JavaScript defined and undefined at the same time (in a FireFox extension)

    I am chasing down a bug in a FireFox extension. I've finally managed to see it for myself (I've only had reports before) and I can't understand how what I saw is possible. One error message from my extension in the Error Console is "gBrowser is not defined". This by itself would be surprising enough, since the overlay is over browser.xul and navigator.xul, and I expect gBrowser to be available from both. Even worse is the actual place where it happens: line 101 of nextplease.js. That is, inside the function isTopLevelDocument, which is only called from onContentLoaded, which is only called from onLoad here: gBrowser.addEventListener(this.loadType, function (event) { nextplease.loadListener.onContentLoaded(event); }, true); So gBrowser is defined in onLoad, but somehow undefined in isTopLevelDocument. When I tried to actually use the extension, I got another error: "nextplease is not defined". The interesting thing is that it happened on lines 853 and 857. That is, inside the functions nextplease.getNextLink = function () { nextplease.getLink(window.content, nextplease.NextPhrasesMap, nextplease.NextImagesMap, nextplease.isNextRegExp, nextplease.NEXT_SEARCH_TYPE); } nextplease.getPrevLink = function () { nextplease.getLink(window.content, nextplease.PrevPhrasesMap, nextplease.PrevImagesMap, nextplease.isPrevRegExp, nextplease.PREV_SEARCH_TYPE); } So nextplease is somehow defined enough to call these functions, but isn't defined inside them. Finally, executing typeof(nextplease) in Execute JS returns "object". Same for gBrowser. How can this happen? Any ideas?

  • Real-time data on webpage with jQuery

    I would like a webpage that constantly updates a graph with new data as it arrives. Regularly, all the data you have is passed to the page at the beginning of the request. However, I need the page to be able to update itself with fresh information every few seconds to redraw the graph. Background The webpage will be similar to this http://www.panic.com/blog/2010/03/the-panic-status-board/. The data coming in will temperature values to be graphed measured by an Arduino and saved to the Django database (this part is already complete). Update It sounds as though the solution is to use the jQuery.ajax() function ( http://api.jquery.com/jQuery.ajax/) with a function as the .complete callback that will schedule another request several seconds later to a URL that will return the data in JSON format. How can that method be scheduled? With the .delay() function?

However, the code looks quite ugly. Do I really need to set up faux constants like that, and then do all that math to calculate what I want? It's been a while since I've worked with the Date object. Is this the best way to do this?

  • Preserve time stamp when shrinking an image

    My digital camera takes pictures with a very high resolution, and I have a PIL script to shrink them to 800x600 (or 600x800). However, it would be nice for the resultant file to retain the original timestamp. I noticed in the docs that I can use a File object instead of a name in PIL's image save method, but I don't know if that will help or not.   • How to read a string one letter at a time in python

    I need to convert a string inputed by a user into morse code. The way our professor wants us to do this is to read from a morseCode.txt file, seperate the letters from the morseCode into two lists, then convert each letter to morse code (inserting a new line when there is a space). I have the beginning. What it does is reads the morseCode.txt file and seperates the letters into a list [A, B, ... Z] and the codes into a list ['– – . . – –\n', '. – . – . –\n'...]. We haven't learned "sets" yet, so I can't use that. How would I then take the string that they inputed, go through letter by letter, and convert it to morse code? I'm a bit caught up.   • Converting Makefile to Visual Studio Terminology Questions (First time using VS)

    I am an old Unix guy who is converting a makefile based project over to Microsoft Visual Studio, I got tasked with this because I understand the Makefile which chokes VS's automatic import tools. I am sure there is a better way than what I am doing but we are making things fit into the customer's environment and that is driving my choices. So gmake is not a valid answer, even if it is the right one ;-) I just have a couple of questions on terminology that I think will be easy for an experienced (or junior) user to answer. Presently, a make all will generate several executables and a shared library. How should I structure this? Is it one "solution" with multiple projects? There is a body of common code (say 50%) that is shared between the various executable targets that is not in a formal library, if that matters. I thought I could just set up the first executable and then add targets for the others, but that does not seem to work. I know I am working against the tool, so what is the right way? I am also using Visual C++ 2010 Express to try and do this so that may also be a problem if support for multiple targets is not supported without using Visual C++ 2010 (insert superlative). Thanks, this is really one of those questions that should be answerable by a quick chat with the resident Windows Developer at the water cooler. So, I am asking at the virtual water cooler, I also spring for a virtual frosty beverage after work.

    In the App ID section of the Program Portal, locate the App ID you wish to use with the Apple Push Notification service. Only App IDs with a specific bundle ID can be used with the APNs. You cannot use a “wild-card” application ID. You must see “Available” under the Apple Push Notification service column to register this App ID and configure a certificate for this App ID. Click the ‘Configure’ link next to your desired App ID. In the Configure App ID page, check the Enable Push Notification Services box and click the Configure button. Clicking this button launches the APNs Assistant, which guides you through the next series of steps that create your App ID specific Client SSL certificate. Download the Client SSL certificate file to your download location. Navigate to that location and double-click the certificate file (which has an extension of cer) to install it in your keychain. When you are finished, click Done in the APNS Assistant. Double-clicking the file launches Keychain Access. Make sure you install the certificate in your login keychain on the computer you are using for provider development. The APNs SSL certificate should be installed on your notification server. When you finish these steps you are returned to the Configure App ID page of the iPhone Dev Center portal. The certificate should be badged with a green circle and the label “Enabled”. To complete the APNs set-up process, you will need to create a new provisioning profile containing your APNs-enabled App ID. IS it posssible to do theses steps through code.

    CRETAE_TIME column of "TABLES" table from INFORMATION_SCHEMA shows the same CREATE_TIME for all my innodb tables. It means all these tables were created between 2010-03-26 06:52:00 and 2010-03-26 06:53:00 while actually they were created a few months ago. Does the CREATE_TABLE field change automatically for Innodb tables?

  • How to edit localized forms all at one time in Visual Studio

    Hello, I have several forms that are localized to multiple languages. If I do a change on one form (for example, changing the size of a textbox) the change is done only on the localized version of the Form that I have currently selected. Is there a way of extending the change I've done the different localized versions of the same Form to avoid having to go one by one doing the same change by hand? Thanks in advance for your help. EDIT: I'm talking about different forms when the real thign is that you have one form and several resources. The point is that at the end is just like if you have different forms for each locale because the form is built with the data from the resource. The problem is still the same because the edits done on the form are stored at one resource file and I have to put by hand those edits in all the resources.
