• How should nested components interact with model in a GUI application?

  Broad design/architecture question. If you have nested components in a GUI, what's the most common way for those components to interact with data? For example, let's say a component receives a click on one of its buttons to save data. Should the save request be delegated up that component's ancestors, with the uppermost ancestor ultimately passing the request to a controller? Or are models/datastores in a GUI application typically singletons, so that a component at any level of a hierarchy can directly get/set data? Or is a controller injected as a dependency down the hierarchy of components, so that any given component is only one intermediary away from the datastore/model?

  I've got two models: item and tags. Both have a name attribute. I want to find items tagged with several tags. class Item < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :tags validates_presence_of :name end class Tag < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :item validates_presence_of :name end Given a list of tag ids, I can easily enough get the list of items tagged with one tag or the other: # Find the items tagged with one or more of the tags on tag_ids Item.all(:conditions => ['tags.id in (?)', tag_ids], :joins => :tags) If tag_ids is {1,4}, then I get all pictures tagged with 1, or 4, or both. I want to know now how to get the pictures that are tagged with both - 1 AND 4. I can't even imagine the SQL that is needed here.

• What do you name your files when using MVC?

  When using the MVC pattern, which I'm not terribly experienced with, I find myself naming things like this: /app/views/widget.php /app/models/widget.php /app/controllers/widget.php That appeals to me because it's easy to find associated classes, and I lean towards shorter names when practical. However, when I'm looking in my IDE, I see three different files called widget.php, which is confusing. I'm tempted to add "_v", "_c", "_m" or something to each name. How do you handle this? FWIW, I'm using CodeIgniter at the moment, and I don't know if there are any special benefits to using a particular convention, or any standard practices. Regardless, I'm intersted in the best-practices from various platforms.

• TypeError while using django Form in editing an Entry

  I have an Entry model which can belong to a Category.I am providing a CategoryChoicesForm sothat the user can choose from various Categorys (from a dropdown list)when an Entry is created or edited.   My view uses ModelX to render my HTML form and my controller action takes ModelY as input when saving the form. It seems the typesafe textbox API assumes I am using the same model in both places. • Nested form child only updates if parent changes.

• Django Project Done and Working. Now What?

  Hi, I just finished what I would call a small django project and pretty soon it's going live. It's only 6 models but a fairly complex view layer and a lot of records saving and retrieving. Of course, forgetting the obvious huge amount of bugs that will, probably, fill my inbox to the top, what would it be the next step towards a website with best performance. What could be tweaked? I'm using jmeter a lot recently and feel confident that I have a good baseline for future performance comparisons, but the thing is: I'm not sure what is the best start, since I'm a greedy bastard that wants to work the least possible and gather the best results. For instance, should I try an approach towards infrastructure, like a distributed database, or should I go with the code itself and in that case, is there something that specifically results in better performance? In your experience, whats pays off more? Personal anecdotes are welcome, but some fact based opinions are even more. :) Thanks very much.

• "Refreshing" an XML feed on iPhone/Mac OSX

  Hi all, I'm curious for those of you who are building iPhone apps based on REST/SOAP/XML-RPC or simply pulling down a dynamic XML feed, what does it mean exactly to you when a user says 'refresh' the feed? The straight forward way is to populate some collection, say an NSMutableArray, with whatever you bring down from the feed. If a widget on the UI is available to refresh, I typically do something like: [myMutableArray removeAllObjects]; // follow steps to repopulate myMutableArray It seems this is the least efficient algorithm for refreshing an XML feed. For instance many folks who are building Twitter clients, are appending changes to their existing feed, versus bringing down the entire feed in its complete form again. What kind of algorithms are you using to "refresh" your models when speaking to a server-side data source? Thanks all.

I'v got a static $_attributes in my AR class and I get the table name by pluralizing my model (User = users) in this case. How do I do this? All models extends the ActiveRecord class.

• Should I use polymorphic association, just a has_one, or attribute in this case?

  I have three Models: Contact_Email, Contact_Letter, and Contact_Call. These represent the unique pairing of a Contact with a template for each of the three. For all of these, I want to record at least a status and date for the status. For example, "declined" on 5/10/10 or "responded" on 5/10/10 or something like that. I may in the future want to extend that. I later do want to be able to see all the instances that have the same status, such as "responded" or "meeting requested." What is the best way to do this? To make the three Contacts statusable and create a polymorphic association on a model called Status. Or just each Object of Contact_Email has_one Status?

  I'm simply binding a WPF DataGridTextColumn with a binding to my grid rows. <DataGridTextColumn Header="Name" Binding="{Binding Name}" /> I've bound to my row view models. The Name property has a PRIVATE setter. public string Name { get { return _name; } private set { _name = value; } } Shouldn't the datagrid prevent me from accessing the private setter? The grid allows me to access it. I swear it never used to, unless I'm forgetting something?

  I am seeking a simulator for thread scheduling at multi-core architecture, that is mapping threads to the cores at runtime. During runtime, simulator collects overall cache and IPC statistics. I checked below simulators, but seems there are not sufficient for me: Simplescalar: A simulator only for single core. SESC: multiprocessor simulator with detailed power, thermal, and performance models, QSim: provides instruction-level control of the emulated environment and detailed information about the executing instruction stream. It seems both SESC and QSim supports instructions scheduling instead of thread scheduling on the cores? Anyone can help provide some clues or share experience for this part?

In a view of a 'client' (let's say the 'show' view), there is a form to capture an 'invoice'. I found 2 approaches: This form should be handled by the 'invoice' controller (method create), having client_id passed as a parameter This form should be handled by a new method in 'client' controller, probably a PUT method defined in routes.rb. Is there a 'Rails way', or both of them are good? Is there a preffered way? Thanks!

• Rails: updating an item along with associated items

  Suppose I have a simple to-do list application. The application contains two models: lists (have an owner and description) items (have name and due-date) that belong to a specific list I would like to have a single edit screen for a list in which I update the list attributes (such as description) and also create/delete/modify associated items. There should be a single "save" button that will commit all changes. Unless save is pressed, any change to the list and the items should be forgotten. I wasn't able to find an elegant best practice for this. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions and/or references to existing implementations.

• java.awt -- when java outputs an image to my monitor (screen), where is the file that is output to the monitor card?

  Suppose that I am drawing a set of images using java graphics objects. Suppose that I java is outputting these images to my monitor. Where is the file or files that are sent to the monitor card (the graphical representation files). How can I take this file and save it to disk, or how can I take this file and write it to an array, or how can I take these files and combine the results of their output (to the monitor) into a single file for saving? I don't want to use a screen shot feature, I want to be able to redirect (xor capture also) the output to the monitor to some sort of byte-stream. I note that monitors are much better than semaphores, when you are talking about display capabilities; I don't need a counter example. I might not be asking the correct question. It might be that I want to capture the file while it is still in User Space, before it is put into 'Device Space'. I would like to try and capture the byte stream so that I can convert it to MPEG-4 format. I either need a streaming output from the MPEG-4 converter, coming from the streaming input, or else, I need to take static images at discrete times and convert the images. What format will the output from User Space be in? What format will the Device Space output be in?   I've worked with J2EE recently and like the idea of struts.xml where I can handle the redirection to pages based on return string from action classes. In PHP, in my new under-development site, I am trying to follow the MVC standards without an MVC framework used from the internet. So I create the controllers, models and views (empty now). The only thing I am really stuck at is when I submit the form in view (insert_product.php) then I will need to create another php page to handle the post data and pass them to controllers. Anyway of avoiding creating those pages and maybe having something like struts.xml? Even if I can post data directly to controller class, that would be good. Thanks,

• Proper way to use before_create

  Pretty basic question here, I need to write a before filter on my Category model, to ensure that the depth never reaches more than 2. Here is what I have so far. app/models/category.rb before_create :check_depth def check_depth self.depth = 1 if depth > 2 end I need it instead of setting depth to 1, just to return a error message, but I can't even get this current setup to work, I get the error undefined method `>' for nil:NilClass So, instead of setting the depth to one like I'm trying to do how would I send an error instead? "import ppm:- | gocr -i - | xclip -selection c" works, but gocr is unreliable: simple text on a webpage has errors. It is a clear font but the OCR tool always misses "r" and replaces it with underscore. "import ppm:- | ocrad -i - | xclip -selection c" says "ocrad: maxval 255 in ppm "P6" file." tesseract needs an image file and does not accept piping input to it. xfce4-screenshooter does not do OCR. ABBYY Screenshot Reader is proprietary. tessnet2 is freeware running on a proprietary platform. Google Docs can OCR screenshots in a batch. But my data is confidential and better not put online. • Getting macro keys from a razer blackwidow to work on linux

  I picked up a razer blackwidow ultimate that has additional keys meant for macros that are set using a tool that's installed on windows. I'm assuming that these arn't some fancypants joojoo keys and should emit scancodes like any other keys. Firstly is there a standard way to check these scancodes in linux? Secondly how do i set these keys to do things in command line and x based linux setups? My current linux install is xubuntu 10.10, but i'll be switching to kubuntu once i have a few things fixed up. Ideally the answer should be generic and system-wide Things i have tried so far: showkeys from the built in kbd package (in a seperate vt) - macro keys not detected xev - macro keys not detected lsusb and evdev output this ahk script's output suggests the M keys are not outputting standard scancodes Things i need to try snoopy pro + reverse engineering (oh dear) Wireshark - preliminary futzing around seems to indicate no scancodes emitted when what i seem to think is the keyboard is monitored and keys pressed. Might indicate additional keys are a seperate device or need to be initialised somehow. Need to cross reference that with lsusb output from linux, in 3 scenarios - standalone, passed through to a windows VM without the drivers installed, and the same with. LSUSB only detects one device on a standalone linux install It might be useful to check if the mice use the same razer synapse driver , since that means some variation of razercfg might work (not detected. only seems to work for mice) Things i have Have worked out: In a windows system with the driver, the keyboard is seen as a keyboard and a pointing device. And said pointing device uses, in addition to your bog standard mouse drivers.. a driver for something called a razer synapse. Mouse driver seen in linux under evdev and lsusb as well Single Device under OS X apparently, though i have yet to try lsusb equivilent on that Keyboard goes into pulsing backlight mode in OS X upon initialisation with the driver. This should probably indicate that there's some initialisation sequence sent to the keyboard on activation. They are, in fact, fancypants joojoo keys. Extending this question a little I have access to a windows system so if i need to use any tools on that to help answer the question, its fine. I can also try it on systems with and without the config utility. The expected end result is still to make those keys usable on linux however. I also realise this is a very specific family of hardware. I would be willing to test anything that makes sense on a linux system if i have detailed instructions - this should open up the question to people who have linux skills, but no access to this keyboard The minimum end result i require I need these keys detected, and usable in any fashion on any of the current graphical mainstream ubuntu varients

• GRUB 2 freezing at OS selection screen, what could be the cause?

  Mains power is somewhat unreliable where I live, so every now and then, the computer gets rebooted when the PSU can't maintain proper voltage during a brown-out or momentary black-out. It's happened a few times recently that when power is restored, the BIOS POST completes successfully, GRUB starts to load and then freezes. I've seen this at the Welcome to GRUB! message, but it seems to happen more often just past the switch to the graphical OS list. At this point, the computer will not respond to anything (arrow keys, control commands, Ctrl+Alt+Del, ...) - it simply sits there displaying this image, seemingly doing nothing more. At that point, turning the computer off using the power button and letting it sit for a while (cooling down?) has allowed it to boot successfully. Turning the computer off and immediately back on seems to give the same result (successful POST then freeze in GRUB). This behavior began recently, although does not seem to be directly correlated with my hard disk woes (although it may be relevant that GRUB resides on that physical disk, I don't know). Once the computer has booted, it runs without a hitch. I know that a "proper" solution would be to invest in a UPS, but what might be causing behavior like this? I was thinking in terms of perhaps the CPU shutting down as a thermal control measure, but if that was the cause then wouldn't I see similar freezes during use (which I do not)? What else could cause freezes apparently closely but not perfectly related to the BIOS handover from POST to OS bootloader? The BIOS settings are to reset to previous power status after a power loss. Since the PC in question is almost always turned on, this means restore to full power status. I have no expansion cards installed that make any BIOS extensions known by screen output during the boot process, at least, but I do have a few expansion cards installed. Haven't made any changes in that regard in a long time, now. I haven't touched GRUB itself for a long time, whether configuration or binaries, so I don't think that's the problem. Also, it doesn't really make sense that a bug in GRUB would manifest itself only once in a blue moon but significantly more often after a power failure.
