• Architecture of a single-page JavaScript web application?

  How should a complex single-page JS web application be structured on the client-side? Specifically I'm curious about how to cleanly structure the application in terms of its model objects, UI components, any controllers, and objects handling server persistence. MVC seemed like a fit at first. But with UI components nested at various depths (each with their own way of acting on/reacting to model data, and each generating events which they themselves may or may not handle directly), it doesn't seem like MVC can be cleanly applied. (But please correct me if that's not the case.) -- (This question resulted in two suggestions of using ajax, which is obviously needed for anything other than the most trivial one-page app.)

  Hi, I'm using HTTP connection to share data with my JSON server. I use URLs like "MyServlet?param1=value1" and so on... I'm now facing a problem with one of my servlet (I can't change it because some other views are using it) : The servlet is working with a syntax including those symbols "{" and "}". The exact syntax is {(value1_value2)(value3_value4)(value5_value6)}{(value7_value8)(value9_value10)(value11_value12)}{(value13_value14)(value15_value16)(value17_value18)} Values are integers, the problem is only when I use "{" and "}" my UrlConnection returns an error for bad URL. I use this to instantiate my NSString : NSString *myURL = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"http://somesite.com/Servlet?PARAM={(%@)}"]; How can I code those char in my NSString ? Thanks in advance !

• POST serialized JSON object to a Coldfusion remote method instead of using FORM

  I have javascript object which consists of complex array of structures with nested structures of other javascript objects created dynamicaly on page etc. long story. I can't use form since my vars would be like 2_34_x_y_foo_bar_235423 due to the nature of UI. When I send that stringified object using GET .ajax request to a remote cfc method everything runs ok until JSON becomes 4000+ chars long, and usually it will be longer then that. When I use POST .ajax, I get 302 status and redirection to cfcexplorer. Is there some way I could "attach" object to a form and send my data as form submit, or some way to send JSON object as it is now using ajax call?

• Conventional Approaches for Passing Data to Back-End?

  Hi guys, I'm fairly new to web development, so please pardon the painfully newbie question that's about to follow. My computer science class group and I are developing a web application for class, which is built in Python (under Django) and uses jQuery on the front end. It's primarily an AJAX-ified application, and passing data from the backend to the front end is done through AJAX calls to specific URLs which return JSON. This is probably a stupid question, but what's the conventional approach for passing data in the opposite direction? We don't want to reload the page or anything, so is it an AJAX pass going the other way or something? Thanks in advance for your help!

  hello. I am developing functional domain specific embedded language within C++ to translate formulas into working code as concisely and accurately as possible.   We are running multiple domains through the same code and we want to save their images in their respective folders. Here's what we are doing. /images/www.domain1.com/logo.jpg /images/www.domain2.com/logo.jpg now, what I want to know is, is this possible in htaccess that we rewrite the urls without user suspecting anything. This is what I want that <img src="/images/logo.jpg" /> should internally become through htaccess RewriteRule ^images/(.*)$ /images/{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [L,R=301] But my question is, The above redirect continually loops Can I achieve the img effect without user or admin suspecting anything? • C optimization breaks algorithm

  I am programming an algorithm that contains 4 nested for loops. The problem is at at each level a pointer is updated. The innermost loop only uses 1 of the pointers. The algorithm does a complicated count. When I include a debugging statement that logs the combination of the indexes and the results of the count I get the correct answer. When the debugging statement is omitted, the count is incorrect. The program is compiled with the -O3 option on gcc. Why would this happen?

• Cakephp, an elegant solution to quantities?

  Hi, I have a shopping cart system in Cakephp, this table has all your usual maguffins: user_ids, product_ids, option_lists ect. It also has quantity. I currently have some awful nested loops to check if the record is the same as any in there, if so add one to the quantity. If not add a new cart item. This loop has to check associated list items and product options, so it goes quite deep. What I'm wondering is if there is a more elegant way of checking to see if two cart items in a database are similar (everything except for quantity). Cheers!

  I have a image map set up and each area in the image map has a href defined. the href on area contains urls to other pages in my application. i generate a have a small ul which lists down name attribute of the area tag. i want the dynamically generated ul/lis to imitate click behaviour of area tag. for this, i have the following jquery set up - $('li').click(function(e){ $('area[name='+$(this).html()+']').trigger('click'); }); but the above works well only in ie6+. ff does not fire the click event. i also tried the click() variant but to no avail. looking forward for some help.   I am integrating WebKit (via Qt) into an application. Instead of having WebKit retrieve scripts, CSS files and images via URLs, I want my application to provide them (e.g. retrieved from a database). For example, a "regular" web page may contain this tag: <IMG src="photos/album1/123456.jpg"> Instead of WebKit fetching this image from a server or the file system, I would prefer some kind of callback that allows my application to provide this image. How can I accomplish this?

I wanted to open links such as index.php?page=login to open with login.php, so I used Rewrite mode in .htaccesss, for example RewriteRule ^/*login.php$ /index.php?page=login [L] in a few pages there should be a query for errors such as RewriteRule ^/*support.php?(.+)$ /index.php?page=support&%{QUERY_STRING} [L] It works but I need to deny the main URLs so when users enters index.php?a=login manually nothing (or the main page) would show up and he should open the link only with /login.php. Is there a way to do this? A little help please...

• Why are developers proud to say our application is XXX lines of code? [closed]

  I admit, I used to do it. I was proud to tell a fellow developer my application is 10K+ lines of code. I thought it was a "Look at me, I'm smart" statement. Time passed and I realized that a experienced developer would be constantly refactoring all of his code. Not only for the sake of remembering what it was doing, but because he realizes he is smarter today than he was yesterday. No longer was it cool to have multiple nested if statements or completely ignoring generics/lambdas. So, whats your take on this? Do you do it and why?

  Hi all. I have been successful in dynamically loading an album in SSP before, but using SSP Standalone. I did it like this: var flashvars = { xmlFilePath: "http://site.com/ssp_director/images.php?album=5" } What I'm looking to do now, though, is dynamically load a gallery when the page loads, using text entered in the javascript, or flashvars I'd assume. I'm using ActionScript 3 with this, so I'm not sure if I have to do something to the SSP instance in Flash. I'm not very good with AS3, so following advice or tutorials is about all I can muster. I'm also using SSP Director, so my gallery XML URLs would be similar to above in the example code. I'd be elated if this is possible, otherwise I will have to find an alternative solution. The kind of input that needs to be handled is as follows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY2j_GPIqRA Try google: http://google.com! (note exclamation mark is not part of the URL) Is http://somesite.com/ down for anyone else? Output: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY2j_GPIqRA http://google.com http://somesite.com/ I've already borrowed one regular expression from the internet which works, but unfortunately wipes the query string out - not good! Any help putting together a regular expression, or perhaps another solution to this problem, would be appreciated.

• MVC Routes - How to get a URL?

  In my current project we have a notification system. When an oject is added to another objects collection, an email is sent to those who are subscibed to the parent object. This happens on the object layer and not in the View or Controller. Here's the problem: Although we can say who created what with what information in the email, we cannot embed links to those objects in the email because in the object layer there is no access to a UrlHelper. To construct a UrlHelper you need a RequestContext, which again does not exist on the object layer. Question: I want to make a helper class to create the url's for me. How can I create an object that will generate these urls without a request context? Is it possible?

  I have a hierarchy of Directory elements in a WiX script. I also have a component that creates a virtual directory (using IIS:WebVirtualDir), which points to the root of my Directory hierarchy. How do I change a property (e.g. AnonymousAccess) of a subfolder of the virtual directory, e.g. MyVirtualDir <<< this is the virtual directory root MyVirtualDir\MySubFolder <<< this is the subfolder for which I wish to change a property using WebDirProperties Please note that I do not wish to create a new virtual directory for the subfolder. I only wish to change a few security settings. The current script is too big to post here, but take a look at the WiX tutorial: 5.3 Web Directory. Suppose in that example that there was another Directory element named "MySubFolder" nested within the "InstallDir" element. What would then be the next step in order to set properties for "MySubFolder" without turning it into a virtual directory?

• SubProject OR SubFolder ?

  I am writing an asp.net application that exposes data in 2 ways: 1 - 1 common section that all users can see 2 - a Section that displays data specific to a registered user. in this case the user can decide how it looks (through themes), and manage the data to be displayed. Of course, the logic behind is the same, appearance would be different for as user1 and user2 The questions are : What would be best using : 'http://www.site.com/User1' or 'http://user1.site.com'. knowing that in both cases i have to make the displayed pages look like a seperate site then the root domain in anycase, the pages that will be displayed and customized on the fly are located in a subfolder of the of the asp.net project (projectrootpath\personalpages). What is the best way to map the personalpages subfolder to a subdomain or a 'http://www.site.com/userX' in the address bar. i also use "~/" in the urls which in this case needs to point to the personalpages rather then the root . Any help is gretaly apreciated.

• Mod_Rewrite: Insert "/" between variables and values in URL

  Hello all, I am attempting clean useful URLs using mod_rewrite. I am sure this is a common question but I am not so hot with mod_rewrite: I have this URL: http://mysite.com/user.php?user=fatcatmat&sort=popularv I want to be able to rewrite it like this: http://mysite.com/user/user/fatcatmat/sort/popularv (Is there a way to remove duplicates in a URL?) I think I have managed to do the removal of the PHP extension. RewriteRule ^(.*)\$ $1.php [nc] Is the above correct? For the separate pages, I would have something like this. RewriteRule ^/?user(/)?$ user.php Main Question: Its a bit tedious to do all the above but is there a MEGA rewrite rule that will just place "/" in between variables and their values and remove the .php extension from all pages? Each line corresponds to a cluster and each entry within each line is a reference i.d. for another file (protein structure in this case), e.g. 1hgn 1dju 3nmj 8kfn 9opu 7gfb 4bui I need to read in the file as a list of lists where each line is a sublist, thus preserving the integrity of the cluster, e.g. nested_list = [['1hgn', '1dju', '3nmj', '8kfn'], ['9opu', '7gfb'], ['4bui']] My current code creates a nested list but the entries within each list are a single string and not comma separated. Therefore, I cannot splice the list with indices so easily. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, S :-)

• Is GOTO really as evil as we are led to believe?

  I'm a young programmer, so all my working life I've been told GOTO is evil, don't use it, if you do, your first born son will die. Recently, I've realized that GOTO actually still exists in .NET and I was wondering, is GOTO really as bad as they say, or is it just because everyone says you shouldn't use it, so that's why you don't. I know GOTO can be used badly, but are there any legit situations where you may possibly use it. The only thing I can think of is maybe to use GOTO to break out of a bunch of nested loops. I reckon that might be better then having to "break" out of each of them but because GOTO is supposedly always bad, I would never use it and it would probably never pass a peer review. What are your views? Is GOTO always bad? Can it sometimes be good? Has anyone here actually been gutsy enough to use GOTO for a real life system?

• Should the spacing between parent and child containers belong to parent or child?

  I'm struggling to determine where in my CSS the padding/margins should go to keep seperation between parent and child containers. For example, if you have have a parent div with two nested children and you need to have even 10px spacing between the children and also have the children be spaced 10 px from the parent; then would you add padding to parent div {padding:10px} and then just add 10px of margin between the children? Or would you leave the parent at 0 padding and have the children define what seperation they need from each other and also their parents?
