  • Creating a tiled map with blender

    I'm looking at creating map tiles based on a 3D model made in blender, The map is 16 x 16 in blender. I've got 4 different zoom levels and each tile is 100 x 100 pixels. The entire map at the most zoomed out level is 4 x 4 tiles constructing an image of 400 x 400. The most zoomed in level is 256 x 256 obviously constructing an image of 25600 x 25600 What I need is a script for blender that can create the tiles from the model. I've never written in python before so I've been trying to adapt a couple of the scripts which are already there. So far I've come up with a script, but it doesn't work very well. I'm having real difficulties getting the tiles to line up seamlessly. I'm not too concerned about changing the height of the camera as I can always create the same zoomed out tiles at 6400 x 6400 images and split the resulting images into the correct tiles.   • Is there anyway to make a Rails / Rack application tell the web server to drop the connection

    There are many security reasons why one would want to drop an HTTP connection with no response (eg. OWASP's SSL best practices). When these can be detected at the server level then it's no big deal. However, what if you can only detect this condition at the application level? Does Rails, or more generally Rack, have any standard way of telling the server to drop the connection without a response? If not, are there some standard headers to pass in that will accomplish that in common web servers (I'm thinking Nginx or Apache)? Even if there is not a standard header is there a reasonable way to configure that behavior? Is this a fool's errand?

    I'm trying to get connected to another ASA via Cisco VPN Client. I am behind an ASA 5505 myself and I am tryihng to VPN to a 5510. I get the message: Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding. I can connect to the other ASA if I use a normal cheap Linksys.   • change font-size of nested elements in list

    Hi, I have a nested list of ul elements. I would like to decrease the font size by a couple of pixels for each level down. So for example the first li elements would have font size 18px, then nested elements of that would have font size 16px and any nested elements of that would have font size 14px etc. However once the font size gets to a certain size e.g. 8px I would like to stop making them any smaller. These lists are generated on the fly so I have no way of knowing how deep they are going to be so can't just hard code the css to a certain level. Is there a way in css or JQuery where I could apply this type of formatting?

  • Virtualhost entries gets over-written when apache httpd.conf is rebuilt

    Background: We have been trying to get a wildcard SSL working on multiple sub domains on a single dedicated address.. We have two sub domains next.my-personal-website.com and blog.my-personal-website.com Part of our strategy has been to edit the httpd.conf and add the NameVirtualHost xx.xx.144.72:443 directive and the virtualhost entries for port 443 for the subdomains there. This works good if we just edit the httpd.conf, add the entries, save it and restart the apache. The problem: But if we add a new sub domain from cpanel or we run the # /usr/local/cpanel/bin/apache_conf_distiller --update # /scripts/rebuildhttpdconf the virtualhost entries that we added manually are no more there in the newly generated httpd.conf file. Only the virtualhost entry for the main domain for port 443 that was there before we made edits to the httpd.conf is there(assuming we are not discussing virtualhost entries for port 80). I understand we need to put the new virtualhost entries in some include files as mentioned here in the cpanel documentation. But am not sure where to. So the question would be where do I put the NameVirtualHost xx.xx.144.72:443 directive and the two virtualhost directive for port 443, so that they are not overwritten when httpd.conf is rebuilt/regenerated later.   • Python if statement efficiency

    A friend (fellow low skill level recreational python scripter) asked me to look over some code. I noticed that he had 7 separate statements that basically said. if ( a and b and c): do something the statements a,b,c all tested their equality or lack of to set values. As I looked at it I found that because of the nature of the tests, I could re-write the whole logic block into 2 branches that never went more than 3 deep and rarely got past the first level (making the most rare occurrence test out first). if a: if b: if c: else: if c: else: if b: if c: else: if c: To me, logically it seems like it should be faster if you are making less, simpler tests that fail faster and move on. My real questions are 1) When I say if and else, should the if be true, does the else get completely ignored? 2) In theory would if (a and b and c) take as much time as the three separate if statements would?

  • What is Causing this IIS 7 Web Service Sporadic Connectivity Error?

    On sporadic occasions we receive the following error when attempting to call an .asmx web service from a .Net client application: "The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host." By sporadic I mean that it might occur zero, once every few days, or a half-dozen times a day for some users. It will never occur for the first web service call of a user. And the subsequent (usually the same) call will always work immediately after the failure. The failures happen across a variety of methods in the service and usually happens between 15-20 seconds (according to the log) from the time of the request. Looking in the IIS site log for the particular call will show one or the other of the following windows error codes: 121: The semaphore timeout period has elapsed. 1236: The network connection was aborted by the local system. Some additional environment details: Running on internal network web farm consisting of two servers running IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 OS. These problems did not occur when running in an older IIS6 web farm of three servers running on Windows Server 2003 (and we use a single IIS6/2003 instance for our development and staging environments with no issues). EDIT: Also, all of these server instances are VMWare virtual machines, not sure if that is a surprise anymore or not. The web service is a .Net 2.0/3.5 compiled .asmx web service that has its own application pool (.Net 2.0, integrated pipeline). Only has Windows Authentication enabled. We have another web service on the farm that uses the same physical path as the primary service, the only difference being that Basic Authentication is enabled. This is used for a portion of our ERP system. Have tried using the same and different application pool - no effect on the error. This site isn't hit as often as the primary site and has never had an error. As mentioned, the error will only happen when called from the .Net client - not from other applications. The client application is always creating a new web service object for each request and setting the service credentials to System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. The application is either deployed locally to a client or run in a Citrix server session. Those users running in Citrix doesn't seem to experience the issue, only locally deployed clients. The Citrix servers and the web farm are located in the same physical location and are located in the same IP range (10.67.xx.xx). Locally deployed clients experiencing the error are located elsewhere (10.105.xx.xx, 10.31.xx.xx). I've checked the OS logs to see if I can see any problems but nothing really sticks out. EDIT: Actually, I myself just ran into the error a little bit ago. I decided to check out the logs again and saw that there was a Security log entry of "Audit Failure" at the 'same' time (IIS log entry at 1:39:59, event log entry at 1:39:50). Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, I'll have to check out the logs of previous errors. I'm probably grasping for straws but the details: Log Name: Security Source: Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing Date: 7/8/2009 1:39:50 PM Event ID: 5159 Task Category: Filtering Platform Connection Level: Information Keywords: Audit Failure User: N/A Computer: is071019.<**.net Description: The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a bind to a local port. Application Information: Process ID: 1260 Application Name: \device\harddiskvolume1\windows\system32\svchost.exe Network Information: Source Address: 0.0.0.0 Source Port: 54802 Protocol: 17 Filter Information: Filter Run-Time ID: 0 Layer Name: Resource Assignment Layer Run-Time ID: 36 I've also tried to use Failed Request Tracing in IIS7 but the service call never actually gets to where FRT can capture it (even though the failure is logged in the web service log). The network infrastructure group said they checked out the DNS and any NIC settings are correct so there is no 'flapping'. Everything pans out. I'm not sure that they checked out any domain controller servers though to see if that could be an issue. Any ideas? Or any other debugging strategies to get to the bottom of this? I'm just the developer in charge of the software and don't really have the knowledge on what to investigate from the networking side of things - although it does sound like a networking issue to me based on what is happening.   • Godaddy ASPNET membership database woes -- PLEASE HELP

    Ok heres the deal I purchased a windows shared hosting account on godaddy that came with 2 MSSQL databases. I setup one to hold my site data and the other installed aspnet membership schema to store site members. The site works perfectly even displaying data from the 1st database. However when I try to login or register I get this nasty error Exception Details: System.Configuration.Provider.ProviderException: The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file. Ive gone through my web.config and theres nothing wrong with my 2 connection strings. It seems godaddy has a problem with using 2 mssql databases simultaneously when 1 is for membership. Googling just finds a whole lot of people with the same problem -- but no solutions! Does anyone know a solution or a workaround?...or has anyone ever successfully used 2 databases(1 for membership) on godaddy?

  • Spinlocks, How Much Useful Are They?

    How often do you find yourself actually using spinlocks in your code? How common is it to come across a situation where using a busy loop actually outperforms the usage of locks? Personally, when I write some sort of code that requires thread safety, I tend to benchmark it with different synchronization primitives, and as far as it goes, it seems like using locks gives better performance than using spinlocks. No matter for how little time I actually hold the lock, the amount of contention I receive when using spinlocks is far greater than the amount I get from using locks (of course, I run my tests on a multiprocessor machine). I realize that it's more likely to come across a spinlock in "low-level" code, but I'm interested to know whether you find it useful in even a more high-level kind of programming?

I'm looking to have categories & subcategories that are shown in the URLs like this: mysite.com/Level1/Maths/Calculations/Addition/ mysite.com/Level3/English/ mysite.com/Level2/English/Storytelling/ In my admin interface I'm looking to have drop downs for each level of category or subcategory. Also at each level I will be querying items (another model) like get all items that have the category 'Level1' AND 'Maths'. There could also be a situation where I have five or more subcategories. How is it best to create my models for best performance? It it worth using tagging instead?

Then at config.php <?php define( 'ROOT_DIR', dirname(__FILE__) ); ?> So at all other pages from different sub/a.php , sub/sub/b.php directories, when I want to include a specific file in specific location, I just need to include( ROOT_DIR.'/include/functions.php' ); In windows server, the ROOT_DIR bring the value to C:/inetpub/vhosts/domain.com Is this a good/secure way? It seems like via this way, when I move the b.php to other upper level folder, I don't need to do any changes to the include file path, which is good for maintenance. Any cons? Like SEO wise, or any other reason... What you guys think.

    Let me put it to you this way: I'm a top-notch programmer, but a notoriously bad interviewee. I've flunked 3 interviews consecutively because I get so nervous that my voice tightens at least 2 octaves higher and I start visibly shaking -- mind you, I can handle whatever technical questions the interviewer throws at me in that state, but I think it looks bad to come off as a quivering, squeaky-voiced young woman during a job interview. I've just got the personality type of a shy computer programmer. No matter how technical I am, I'm going to get passed up in favor of a smooth talker. I have another interview coming up shortly, and I want to really impress the company. Here are my trouble spots: What can I do to be less nervous during my interview? I always get really excited when I hear I have a face-to-face interview, but get more and more anxious as D-Day the interview approaches. My employers wants me to explain what I used to do at my prior employment. I'm a very chatty person and tend to talk/squeak for 10 minutes at a time. How long or short should I time my answers? On that note, when I'm explaining what I did at prior jobs, what exactly is my interviewer looking for? At some point, my interviewer will ask "do you have any questions for me while you're here?" I should, but what kinds of questions should I ask to show that I'm interested in being employed? My interviewer always asks why I'm looking for a new job. The real reason is that my present salary is $27K/yr [Edit to add: and I've yet to get a raise since I started], and I want to make more money -- otherwise the work environment is fine. How do I sugarcoat "I want to make more money" into something that sounds nicer? I have only one prior programmer job, and I've worked there for 18 months, but I have the skill of someone with 4 to 6 years of experience. What can I say to compete against applicants with more work experience? I took a low-paying $27K/yr programming job just to get my foot in IT, and I've been trying to leverage that job as a stepping stone to better opportunities. I get interviews because I consistently out-score senior-level developers in aptitude tests, and my desired salary range is right in the ballpark of what most companies want to offer. Unfortunately, while I've been a programming as a hobby for 10 years and I'm geared to graduate with my BA in Comp Sci in May '09, employers see me as a junior-level programmer with no degree. I want to prove them wrong and get a job that matches my skill level. I'd appreciate any advice anyone has to offer, especially if they can help me get a better job in the process.

    Hi, anyone knows an easy method to generate mail merge .doc file from Java? So, I want to create a Word (95/97) document in Word, put some simple placeholders in it (only single value, no iterators and other advanced tags) like the ones used with mailmerge option, and then at runtime replace those placeholders with values from Java. One option is to use Jasperreports, but this would require that I create exact replica of non-trivial Word document in Jasper format, which is not easy and is hard to change later. Is there some method of filling placeholders in Word from Java, which does not require low-level document alteration with positioning and others low-level .doc tags from code, but something like this: docPreparer.fillPlaceholder('placeholder1', 'my real value from runtime'); Some CRMs do this via ActiveX control for internet explorer, and it works great (they use Word's mailmerge) but I need an all-Java solution. Also the same thing should be in Enviroment.TickCount. If the answer is yes should I wrap my code inside BeginThreadAffinity as follows Thread.BeginThreadAffinity(); Stopwatch sw = new Stopwatch(); sw.Start(); //DoWork sw.Stop(); //take sw.Elapsed Thread.EndThreadAffinity(); P.S The switching can occur over the thread level not only the processor level, for example if the function is running in another thread so the system can switch it to another processor, if that happens, will the Stopwatch be valid after this switching? I am not using Stopwatch for perfromance measurement only but also to simulate timer function using Thread.Sleep (to prevent call overlapping)

I have two objects A and B. A has a field named b which is of type B. In my mapping b is mapped as a many-to-one. This all runs in a larger persistence framework (the framework is kind of like Core Data) and so I don't use any cascades in my hibernate mappings since cascades are handled at a higher level.
