• Replace %26 in htaccess to %2526

  I would like htaccess to rewrite example.com/something_%26_else into example.com/something_%2526_else. I'm importing a bunch of pages that have ampersands in the title from Mediawiki. These are encoded as %26. Drupal, for various reasons, has decided double encode the url it to have it become %2526. I simply can't create the alisis within Drupal so I have to use htaccess This is what I have as my rule so far as RewriteRule ^w/([^%26]+)\%26(.*)$ w/$1\%2526$2 [R=301] I asked this question three months ago on stackexchange and was not able to get it working. I tried hiring a contractor for this but was unable to find one. So this my last ditch effort before I completely give up. I really appreciate the help. All the best, Patrick

• Resolving a BSOD/CPU/GPU issue...

  Hello all, I'm getting a BSOD / system crash (sometimes the PC just quits without a BSOD). Hardware Specifications cpu: i7 920 2666MHz / 8 cores (not OCed afaik) mobo: Asus P6T SE ram: 2x Corsair CM3X2G1333C9 (64bit DDR3 667MHz) gfx: ATI Radeon HD 5970 1GB (XFX HD5970 BE) os: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (legit) All bios, firmware and drivers are all up to date (as of today). Symptoms Sometimes the PC runs smoothly, sometimes I get this BSOD. The BSOD always happens when I'm doing something related to graphics, such as viewing a video or playing a game. I get to know about the imminent BSOD ~10 seconds earlier; the PC starts freezing occasionally but increasing in frequency and length of lag (I noticed processor usage in creased from Process Monitor). I've tweaked BIOS settings occasionally but afaik, it was in vain. A day or so ago, I reset it to factory settings. BSOD contents The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000101 (0x0000000000000019, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff88001f35180, 0x0000000000000004). 15-12-2010 A fatal hardware error has occurred. Reported by component: Processor Core Error Source: Machine Check Exception Error Type: Internal Timer Error Processor ID: 4 23-12-2010 A fatal hardware error has occurred. Reported by component: Processor Core Error Source: Machine Check Exception Error Type: Internal Timer Error Processor ID: 2 Important The interesting thing is that although the event log (and BSOD screen) blame a "secondary processor", Windows Action Center sometimes blamed the GFX driver (for the same error). Also It is interesting to note that after hibernating my PC, I always get the BSOD.

  I just read the Professional C# 4 and .NET 4 from wrox, wrote by Christian Nagel, Bill Evjen, Jay Glynn, Karli Watson and Morgan Skinner. This is a complete book in whats in .NET 4 as well as a great book for anybody jumping in .NET. They did a great job including all the important parts of .NET as well as the new version 4. As I was reading, my first impression was how far .NET has gone since version 1.0, the different platforms including WPF, Silverlight, ASP.NET ADO.NET, LINQ and PLINQ now...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How to do firmware updates/upgrades to a Blackberry

  I have several clients/friends that have Blackberry and wish to update their phone but without installing Windows. Any windows. Just doing it from Ubuntu. How can this be done. The update the mention is for the firmware and new programs for the phone. I do not know much about Blackberries since am more of an android guy. At the end they want support for upgrade/update the Blackberry from within Linux and sync it to the PC (Backups, upload/download stuff to and from it). I have seen 2 types of projects working on this: Linberry (From Venezuela ;) ) - http://linberry.webcindario.com/ Barry - http://www.netdirect.ca/software/packages/barry but so far neither offers updating the firmware or downloading updates. Are there any Ubuntu blackberry projects I am not aware of.

• How to make custom shaped holes in terrain

  So I'm trying to create a game where you fit certain shaped objects into the hole that fits them (similar to the young children's game with different shaped blocks) in Unity 3D. I've encountered a problem, how do I make the holes in the terrain? Or what type of object should I use for making holes in? So far I've tried to make a 3d model in unity by using other cubes and planes, it just doesn't feel right. I guess I need to create a model in another software and import to unity, I don't know any other software I can use. Tips would help.

• Fan running constantly on a Dell D420 laptop

  I'm running latest Ubuntu 12.04 beta on a Dell D420 laptop. The fan is spinning almost constantly - even after turning the PC off, letting it cool down, and then turning it back on, the fan will turn on after some idle time. Not to mention any CPU work. The CPU temps are normal, in range of 50-55 idle, and up to 70 with some load. It wouldn't be an issue, but the same PC running Fedora, or Arch Linux, had a much more modest fan profile - the temps were managed while you seldom heard the fan. To counter the problem, I currently use i8k tools, set manual temperature thresholds which seemed to have worked, but the i8kmon has a tendency to cycle the fan between lower and higher state within aboutin a second intervals - which is extremely annoying. As far as I can tell I did not run any special software (beside laptop-mode-tools), or any additional kernel modules when running Arch Linux and I can't tell about Fedora.

• How to find the number of packages needing update from the command line?

  I'm working on some system admin automation using fabric and I'd like to be able to monitor the number of packages that need upgrading on a given machine. This is the same information that I can see when I first log in to a machine, i.e. this part: 35 packages can be updated. 22 updates are security updates. Is there a command that I can run (preferably without sudo) that gives just that information? I'd also like to know whether or not apg/dpkg thinks that the machine needs a reboot after packages are installed/upgraded. bybobu shows this at the bottom of the screen. That way I can decide whether or not to reboot machines after I update packages a bit more intelligently. I've looked at the apt-python bindings, but they seem to have a high learning curve and they also appear to be changed around a lot -- I'd like something that will work at least as far back as lucid without needing to do different things on different Ubuntu versions.

• "Unrecoverable error" during installation

  I have an old Dell computer and I want to switch from windows xp and install the new ubuntu. I have tried multiple times to download it via cd-r but keep getting the same error message: unrecoverable error. The error happens after the menu which lists try ubuntu, install ubuntu, etc.It only gets as far as the Screen with a toolbar on the top that includes power, sound, and two arrows. That is when the message displays. switching to desktop version to find what the problem is( or something like that.) What is going wrong?

• Exchange 2010 Recovery: Mailbox not found using Restore-Mailbox

  Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 5 server information store database was restored to a Recovery Database using EMC Networker successfully. The Recovery Database is in a mounted state with mailboxes listed within in it. However, when restoring the mailbox content using the following command: Restore-Mailbox –Identity MYMAILBOX –RecoveryDatabase MYRECOVERYDB –RecoveryMailbox LOSTMAILBOX –TargetFolder FOLDERFORLOSTMAILBOX Returns the following error: Mailbox "LOSTMAILBOX" doesn't exist on database "MYRECOVERYDB". + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (0:Int32) [Restore-Mailbox], ManagementObjectNotFoundException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 66265C53,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.RecipientTasks.RestoreMailbox Note: I've used the correct alias name for the mailbox name; i've also tried combinations such as first name, or last name or both and so forth. Issuing a Get-MailboxStatistics -Database MYRECOVERYDB to see if the mailbox is there and it is as shown below: DisplayName ItemCount StorageLimitStatus LOSTMAILBOX 39495 MailboxDisabled Note: The StorageLimitStatus shows a strange output of MaibloxDisabled. Perhaps this may be the culprit. Going by the article's documentation I cannot complete the restore of the mailbox as I'm stuck at the restore-mailbox error that it cannot be found. • New Windows Phone 7 Stencil For Cacoo

  I have created a stencil for wire framing Windows Phone 7 application in Cacoo.  This is definitely a work in progress, but until it is complete I would suggest combining this stencil with the Android stencil that is available by default in Cacoo.  Below are a couple of screen shots of the stencil so far. • creating a google wave clone using php/mysql/jquery

• Correct way to set up office network - 8 workstations, a file server and a staging server

  Our office had this old school windows 2003 domain setup, our server caught fire, and now we are looking to do it right from scratch. Here is what we need: 5 PC and 3 Mac workstations for web development, they will each have WAMP/MAMP setup on them, managed by their developers. We will have a file server for assets, and a LAMP server with an external IP for staging. Here is what we have to work with: 5 IP addresses, brand new PC file server with windows 2008 SE, D-Link DSS-16+ 16 port switch, belkin 5 port wireless router, cable modem with 4 ports. How I have it set up now (this is a temporary makeshift setup): Cable modem = LAMP server, wireless router Wireless router = Switch = All of the workstations and file server (setup as a workgroup). We have noticed our internet is very slow with us all plugged in to the switch, and the switch plugged in to the router. I am not positive, but I think it is because our router does not have NAT. We are also having problems with the MACs connection to the network drive - it keeps disconnecting. I want this done right, and we have a ~$600 budget to buy anything else we need. Does anybody have any advice for me? Should I set up a domain or workgroup?

• Setup site folders on Apache and PHP [closed]

  I'm trying to set up my first Apache server on my Windows PC at home and I have real trouble finding out which configuration settings go where. I downloaded and installed XAMPP which seemed to get everything nicely set up and can see a working website on http://localhost. So far so good. The point of this is to develop a website of course, and to make my life easier (irony?), I wanted to let the web site root point to my Eclipse project folder. So I opened httpd.conf, uncommented a VirtualHost block and changed its DocumentRoot to my local path. Now when I try to load http://localhost I get a 403 (Access denied) error. So where do I configure permissions for my folder? And is that all I need to let my site run from the folder specified or am I going to have to clear another hurdle?

• Interview with Ronald Bradford about MySQL Connect

  Ronald Bradford,  an Oracle ACE Director has been busy working with  database consulting, book writing (EffectiveMySQL) while traveling and speaking around the world in support of MySQL. I was able to take some of his time to get an interview on this thoughts about theMySQL Connect conference. Keith Larson: What where your thoughts when you heard that Oracle was going to provide the community the MySQL Conference ?Ronald Bradford: Oracle has already been providing various different local community events including OTN Tech Days and  MySQL community days. These are great for local regions both in the US and abroad.  In previous years there has been an increase of content at Oracle Open World, however that benefits the Oracle community far more then the MySQL community.  It is good to see that Oracle is realizing the benefit in providing a large scale dedicated event for the MySQL community that includes speakers from the MySQL development teams, invested companies in the ecosystem and other community evangelists.I fully expect a successful event and look forward to hopefully seeing MySQL Connect at the upcoming Brazil and Japan OOW conferences and perhaps an event on the East Coast.Keith Larson: Since you are part of the content committee, what did you think of the submissions that were received during call for papers?Ronald Bradford: There was a large number of quality submissions to the number of available presentation sessions. As with the previous years as a committee member for the annual MySQL conference, there is always a large variety of common cornerstone MySQL features as well as new products and upcoming companies sharing their MySQL experiences. All of the usual major players in the ecosystem will in presenting at MySQL Connect including Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Continuent, Percona, Tokutek, Sphinx and Amazon to name a few.  This is ensuring the event will have a large number of quality speakers and a difficult time in choosing what to attend. Keith Larson: What sessions do you look forwarding to attending? Ronald Bradford: As with most quality conferences you can only be in one place at one time, so with multiple tracks per session it is always difficult to decide. The continued work and success with MySQL Cluster, and with a number of sessions I am sure will be popular. The features that interest me the most are around the optimizer, where there are several sessions on new features, and on the importance of backups. There are three presentations in this area to choose from.Keith Larson: Are you going to cover any of the content in your books at your MySQL Connect sessions?Ronald Bradford: I will be giving two presentations at MySQL Connect. The first will include the techniques available for creating better indexes where I will be touching on some aspects of the first Effective MySQL book on Optimizing SQL Statements.  In my second presentation from experiences of managing 500+ AWS MySQL instances, I will be touching on areas including SQL tuning, backup and recovery and scale out with replication.   These are the key topics of the initial books in the Effective MySQL series that focus on performance, scalability and business continuity.  The books however cover a far greater amount of detail then can be presented in a 1 hour session. Keith Larson: What features of MySQL 5.6 do you look forward to the most ?Ronald Bradford: I am very impressed with the optimizer trace feature. The ability to see exposed information is invaluable not just for MySQL 5.6, but to also apply information discerned for optimizing SQL statements in earlier versions of MySQL.  Not everybody understands that it is easy to deploy a MySQL 5.6 slave into an existing topology running an older version if MySQL for evaluation of many new features.  You can use the new mysqlbinlog streaming feature for duplicating master binary logs on an older version with a MySQL 5.6 slave.  The improvements in instrumentation in the Performance Schema are exciting.   However, as with my upcoming Replication Techniques in Depth title, that will be available for sale at MySQL Connect, there are numerous replication features, some long overdue with provide significant management benefits. Crash Save Slaves, Global transaction Identifiers (GTID)  and checksums just to mention a few.Keith Larson: You have been to numerous conferences, what would you recommend for people at the conference? Ronald Bradford: Make the time to meet and introduce yourself to the speakers that cover the topics that most interest you. The MySQL ecosystem has a very strong community.  The relationships you build with presenters, developers and architects in MySQL can be invaluable, however they are created over time. Get to know these people, interact with them over time.  This is the opportunity to learn more then just the content from a 1 hour session. Keith Larson: Any additional tips to handling the long hours ? Ronald Bradford: Conferences can be hard, especially with all the post event drinking.  This is a two day event and I am sure will include additional events on Friday and Saturday night so come well prepared, and leave work behind. Take the time to learn something new.   You can always catchup on sleep later. • Are there any non-self-taught famous programmers? [closed]

  It seems to me that being a self-taught programmer has significant advantages over picking it up only in higher education. Not only does a self-taught developer have a headstart on their 10 000-odd hours of mastery, but their hobby demonstrates genuine interest. This will likely lead to a process of continuous self-improvement over their career, not to mention increased likelihood of producing personal projects that are worthy of fame. A programmer who spends four years in study (not nearly all of which is going to be directly concerned with programming) has far less leisure to explore and learn independently than does a developer who starts college with even a few years of dedicated hobbyist study. I wonder whether there are any famed developers who had no exposure to programming before deciding to study it in university. I simply doubt that an 18-year-old has the capacity to become a brilliant programmer with no prior experience, but that seems like an awfully elitist and unpleasant view, so I'd like to be proven wrong.

• Permanently disabling touchpad in ubuntu 12.04

  I'm looking for a way to permanently disable the touchpad in ububtu 12.04 (my computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge on which it isn't possible to disable it in the bios). I tried the applications GPointingDeviceSettings and synaptiks 0.8.1 as well as the applets touchpad-indicator and Jupiter. None of these does the trick of disabling the touchpad permanently. Jupiter comes closest - it remembers that I have disabled the touchpad after restart - but when I login after the computer has been in suspend mode, the touchpad is enabled again. Can anyone help me in disabling the touchpad possibly at a lower level so it won't in any way be enabled unless I choose to enable it? I'm totally new to linux so a detailed explanation would be much appreciated ... The links, so far, doesn't address my question. I have no problem turning the touchpad off and making it stay off after reboot but when I login after the computer has been in an altered power mode it's on again. Isn't there a way to permanently disable a device like touchpad?

• Ubuntu 11.10 ATI Drivers vesa park

  This is probably not an issue, from all I can get it seems my hardware and drivers are properly installed. However when I go to system settings - system info - graphics. I get Driver: VESA:PARK. Experience: Standard. my graphics card is a: Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5470 512MB. I am pretty sure it's not a same-die GPU since there is a fan exhaust at the side of my laptop which I presume is the exhaust for the GPU... I have no clue whatsoever what this means. I installed the ati drivers first using the 'additional drivers' method. However I also decided to look a manual installation up via the terminal since I've had problems before with Ubuntu and ati cards. I used wget and something among the lines of sh dpkg -i. I can recall exactly, I took them from another stackoverflow answer. Anyway, it seems everything is installed properly since it shows up with these commands: sudo lshw -C video fglrxinfo however the first command seems to detect hardware, not the driver per se, although the driver is probably needed to detect the hardware anyway which would indicate its properly installed. I am still not sure about that VES:PARK thing though. I'd like to know what it means.. Also, if someone happens to know a good way of testing if the gpu is connected/being used...some sort of benchmark maybe...I'd like to hear it. P.s. I can find my way around in Ubuntu but I would probably still be considered a rookie by more experienced users.

• How to get GameElements (RigidBody) size in Unity

  I've made a prefab consisting of a Cube which I've first scaled to more resemble a brick. There's also a Rigidbody added to the cube (in the prefab). Now I want to use that prefab in a c# script to make a wall out of multiple bricks. My question is, how can I access the dimensions of my brick (width, height, the z dimension size) so that in my script I can make bricks which are placed one next to the other (and then one on top of the other)? I've looked at the documentation for GameObject and Rigidbody but I can't find anything helpful. • When should I make the first commit to source control?

  I'm never sure when a project is far enough along to first commit to source control. I tend to put off committing until the project is 'framework-complete' and primarily commit features from then on. (I haven't done any personal projects large enough to have a core framework too big for this.) I have a feeling this isn't best practice, though I'm not sure what all could go wrong. Let's say, for example, I have a project which consists of a single code file. It will take about 10 lines of boilerplate code, and 100 lines to get the project working with extremely basic functionality (1 or 2 features). Should I first check in: The empty file? The boilerplate code? The first features? At some other point? Also, what are the reasons to check in at a specific point?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 4 solution that I'm putting together, leveraging IoC and the repository pattern using Entity Framework 5. I have a new requirement to be able to pull data from a second database (from another internal application) which I don't have control over. There is no API available unfortunately for the second application and the general pattern at my place of work is to go direct to the database. I want to maintain a consistent approach to modeling the domain and use entity framework to pull the data out, so thus far I have used Entity Framework's database first approach to generate a domain model and database context over the top of this. However, I've become a little stuck on how to include the second domain model in the application. I have a generic repository which I've now moved out to a common DataAccess project, but short of creating two distinct wrappers for the generic repository (so each can identify with a specific database context), I'm struggling to see how I can elegantly include multiple models?

• Unable to install flash plugin in Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit). The upgrade went smoothly (far more than I expected). Unfortunately, I cannot seem to install the flash plugin in either Firefox or Chrome. chrome://plugins does not show flash. I tried 19:17farhat ~$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done flashplugin-installer is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Yet, I cannot seem to find anything related to flash on the system. 19:17farhat ~$ sudo updatedb [sudo] password for farhat: 19:17farhat ~$ locate libflashplayer.so 19:17farhat ~$ locate libflashplayer 19:17farhat ~$ locate libflash /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/libflashlo.so 19:17farhat ~$ I am at the end of everything I know. Any help will be appreciated. I have tried removing and reinstalling the package. Still the same results.
