• Unable to install flash plugin in Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit). The upgrade went smoothly (far more than I expected). Unfortunately, I cannot seem to install the flash plugin in either Firefox or Chrome. chrome://plugins does not show flash. I tried 19:17farhat ~$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done flashplugin-installer is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. • How to return the relevant country domain in rich snippets pulled in from from Google Places?

  Background A site has multiple ccTLDs: example.com for people in the US, example.co.uk for UK users, example.de for Germans, etc. Googling for certain city keywords will return rich snippets with a list of Google Places: Problem When searching on Google Germany, the domain for US users (example.com) appears instead of the corresponding ccTLD (example.de) aimed at German users. This is not good user experience, as users would most likely like to book on a site localized for them (e.g. language and currency). Question What solutions are there? Is it possible to return different ccTLDs in rich snippets for Google searches in Germany/UK? If so, how? Ideas Stabs in the dark: Would implementing the hreflang annotation resolve this? (GWMT geotargeting is already set.) What about entering multiple corresponding URLs in the structured data markup? (As far as I know, Google Places accepts only a single website URL.)

• Photoshop Elements 9 VS Paintshop Photo Pro X3 For Web Design

  I need a good image creation program for web design. I have downloaded both Elements 9 and Paintshop X3. So far I have found them both to be great programs. X3 seems like it has a lot of features, Elements seems like it's quite easy and stable to use. I think I'm going to go with Elements, but I wanted to get other opinions. Which program do you guys like better overall? What things do you think they lack for image creation/editing pertaining to web design, or what features do they have that are great for it? Thanks!

• Make game for iPhone only

  From the beginning of development on my game I was hoping to release it as a universal app, but the gameplay simply doesn't work as well on the iPad. Also, it was designed to work on the iPhone screen, and the (even slight) difference in width to height ratio gives iPhone users an advantage over iPad users by seeing more of the path ahead. Not to mention it doesn't look quite right on the larger screen. Hypothetically, if my game becomes a top seller, would it be a bad idea to have it only an iPhone app? Would it make it far less likely for my app to become viral? My app would still work on the iPad like any other iPhone app, and I plan on eventually releasing an update that supports both iPad and iPhone.

• Versioning Strategy for Service Interfaces JAR

  I'm building a service oriented architecture composed (mostly) of Java-based services, each of which is a Maven project (in an individual repository) with two submodules: common, and server. The common module contains the service's interfaces that clients can include in their project to make service calls. The server submodule contains the code that actually powers the service. I'm now trying to figure out an appropriate versioning strategy for the interfaces, such that each interface change results in a new common jar, but changes to the server (so long as they don't impact the contract of the interfaces) receive the same common jar. I know this is pretty simple to do manually (simply increment the server version and don't touch the common one), but this project will be built and deployed by a CI server, and I'd like to come up with a strategy for automatically versioning these. The only thing I have been able to come up with so far is to have the CI server md5 the service interfaces.

• Web Service - SOAP

  My experience with web services is slim and I'm trying to understand this a little bit more. I have done for instance a web service using visual studio. In order to use it, I add a web service reference in my projects and this creates a proxy and the use is pretty simple. Does this use SOAP? I ask this because i will be now facing a web service that i must communicate using SOAP with attachements and i'm trying to understand the concept behind this and the difference to what i have done so far. Will the proxy still be viable or do i need to create the XML by hand and post it to the web service? This concepts still confuse and so any help is appreciated. EDIT: I'm not developing the service, i will be just using it.

• A good interpreted language for a small embedded project

  I have an mbed which has a small ARM Cortex M3 on it. Basically, my effective resources for the project are ~25Kb of RAM and ~400Kb of Flash. For I/O I'll have a PS/2 keyboard, a VGA framebuffer(with character output), and an SD card for saving/loading programs(up to a couple of Mb maybe) The reason I ask this here is because I'm trying to figure out what programming language to implement on the thing. I'm looking for an interpreted language that's easy for me to implement, and won't break the bank on my resources. I also intend for this to be at least possible to write on th device itself, though the editor can be interpreted(yay bootstrapping) Anyway, I've looked at a few simple languages. Some nice candidates: Forth BASIC Scheme? Has anyone done something like this or know of any languages that can fit this bill or have comments about my three candidates so far?

  I am a C# programmer, and most of my development is for websites along with a few Windows application. As far as C goes, I haven't used it in a long time, as there was no need to. It came to me as a surprise when one of my friends said that she needs to learn C for testing jobs, while I was helping her learn C#. I figured that someone would only learn C for testing only if there is development done in C. In my knowledge, all the development related to COM and hardware design are also done in C++. Therefore, learning C doesn't make sense if you need to use C++. I also don't believe in historic significance, so why waste time and money in learning C? Is C is still used in any kind of new software development or anything else?

In read benchmark, results are similar: dd of=/dev/null if=DD bs=8M count=10000 iflag=direct 10000+0 records in 10000+0 records out 83886080000 bytes (84 GB) copied, 79,5918 s, 1,1 GB/s If remove iflag=direct obtain 150MB/s... I don't understand this huge differences, on other machines y don't have this behavior. Can I have some kernel parameter misconfigured? Thanks!

  I have been working with Hibernate for a fews years now, and I want to solidify and demonstrate my knowledge by taking the Oracle JPA certification, also known as: "Oracle Certified Expert, Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 Java Persistence API Developer (CX-310-094)" There is a training course provided by Oracle: "Building Database Driven Applications with JPA (SL-370-EE6)" But this costs $1800 and I think it would be overkill for my needs. Ideally, I would like a self study guide that will cover everything in the exam. I have looked for books and these seem like possibilities: Pro JPA 2: Mastering the Java Persistence API (Expert's Voice in Java Technology) and Beginning Java EE 6 with GlassFish 3 2nd Edition (Expert's Voice in Java Technology) But these aren't checklist type study guides as far as I am aware. I found the official SCJP study guide very useful, but I think the equivalent text for the JPA exam isn't out yet. If anyone has taken this exam, I would be grateful to hear how you prepared for it. • How to revoke gnupg public key without private key?

  Long story short I have an key generated with seahorse and mistakenly deleted it from my system. I do remember passphrase but I don't have this key anywhere on my system. Scanned trough Ask Ubuntu but couldn't find any aplicabile solution on similar issue. However public key is still updated on keyring servers and I would like to revoke it. Since I have no revocation certificate and I can't get hold of private key (only public key is available from keyservers which I imported to seahorse) I have no idea how to accomplish it. Spent some time searching for solution acros net, various manuals and so on, but so far no luck. gpg --list-secret-keys - returns no output at all. gpg --list-keys - returns public key info gpg --gen-revoke *user-id* - returns - gpg: secret key *user-id* not found: eof gpg (GnuPG) version 1.4.11. Anyone able to suggest a solution?

• Using a :default for file names on include templates in SMARTY 3 [closed]

  Hello everyone, Although I don't think the question was as good as it could be, let me try to explain better here. I have a site using SMARTY 3 as the template system. I have a template structure similar to the below one: /templates/place1/inner_a.tpl /templates/place1/inner_b.tpl /templates/place2/inner_b.tpl /templates/place2/inner_c.tpl /templates/default/inner_a.tpl /templates/default/inner_b.tpl /templates/default/inner_c.tpl These are getting included on the parent template using {include file="{$temp_folder}/{$inner_template}"} So far great. What I wanted to do is having a default for, in the case that the file "{$temp_folder}/{$inner_template}" does not exists, it uses the equivalent file at "default/{$inner_template}". i.e. If I do {include file="place1/inner_c.tpl"}, since that file does not exists it in fact includes "default/inner_c.tpl" Is it possible?

• Is eCPMs dropping by about 50% in January a usual behavior on Google AdSense?

  So I just got semi-serious about running some AdSense sites over the past 6 months and the eCPM's have hovered between 1.38 and 1.42 [yes it's that close] when I look at the eCPM for each month. Obviously some deviation day to day but pretty damn close to a buck forty in aggregate. So far for January I am sitting at 0.80 for an eCPM. I know it's not a huge sample size but the daily pageviews are fairly consistent [actually a bit higher] than where they were in December. I am trying to justify this by thinking that somehow a lot of ad buyers buy inventory for the year and have to get setup to do another big buy now that it's a new calendar year but that thought isn't close to comforting. Is this happening to anyone else? EDIT: I run a lot of websites and the ratios of pageviews are about the same this month to last month but just to be clear the eCPM I posted is for 20 websites in a variety of niches, it doesn't accurately depict any one domain.

Here are some analytics: Notice how the images, although only accounting for 65% of the total size (1.1MB), are by far the slowest loading assets: 96% of time. I'd like to know which are the recommended practices on optimizing loading speed, only taking images into account. Some of the techniques we are already applying: image compression images hosted on cookieless domain and CDN spriting everything that can be sprited http headers: keep alive and Expires to one year. • Designing binary operations(AND, OR, NOT) in graphs DB's like neo4j

  I'm trying to create a recipe website using a graph database, specifically neo4j using spring-data-neo4j, to try and see what can be done in Graph Databases. My model so far is: (Chef)-[HAS_INGREDIENT]->(Ingredient) (Chef)-[HAS_VALUE]->(Value) (Ingredient)-[HAS_INGREDIENT_VALUE]->(Value) (Recipe)-[REQUIRES_INGREDIENT]->(Ingredient) (Recipe)-[REQUIRES_VALUE]->(Value) I have this set up so I can do things like have the "chef" enter ingredients they have on hand, and suggest recipes, as well as suggest recipes that are close matches, but missing one ingredient. Some recipes can get complex, utilizing AND, OR, and NOT type logic, something like (Milk AND (Butter OR spread OR (vegetable oil OR olive oil))) and I'm wondering if it would be sane to model this in a graph using a tree type representation? An example of what I was thinking is to create three "node" types of AND, OR, and NOT and have each of them connect to the nodes value underneath. How else might this be represented in a Graph Database or is my example above a decent representation?

• Limit the amount a camera can pitch

  I'm having problems trying to limit the range my camera can pitch. Currently my camera can pitch around a model without restriction, but having a hard time trying to find the value of the degree/radian the camera is currently at after pitching. • Anti-aliasing changed after update (or something...)

  The anti-aliasing of my system (of GTK?) has gone weird after I did one of two things - do a system update, and install gimp 2.7 beta. As far as I can tell, I never did anything special to achieve that before. It has always been on the default settings since I installed Lucid few months ago. Update: I have tried different settings (even though I knew they were already at the "best" settings) in appearance fonts ( details) but, as expected, any change there only makes things worse.

  I am involved on a project to talk to communities about the risks of posting online content is social networks. But this time I was really impressed how far security concerns can go. This video from CBS news talks about security risks related to corporate fax/printers and scanners. It was very clear that when they got the machines they selected the machines by previous owner and they were not random machines, but still, I will never scan from my company machine again. So far I've just done it by hand by copying four spaces to the clipboard and then mashing keys really fast: ?, Home, Ctrl+V (repeat) What is a quicker way to accomplish this, e.g. copying and pasting to another program? a Firefox or Chrome browser extension? a command to directly modify the clipboard contents? an auto-typing program?

• What's better than outputdebugstring for windows debugging?

  So, before I came to my current place of employment, the windows OutputDebugString function was completely unheard of, everyone was adding debug messages to string lists and saving them to file or doing showmessage popups (not very useful for debugging drawing issues). Now everybody (all 6 of us) is like "What can I say about this OutputDebugString?" and I'm like, "with much power comes much responsibility." I kind of feel as though I've passed a silent but deadly code smell to my colleagues. Ideally we wouldn't have bugs to debug right? Ideally we'd have over 0% code coverage, eh? So as far as petty debugging is concerned (not complete rewriting of a 3 million line Delphi behemoth) what's a better way to use debug running code than just adding OutputDebugString all over?

• Typing tutor games with good playablity

  Are there any linux typing tutor games which are enjoyable games in their own right? I'm a computer professional, but have never learned to type properly. I also don't want my kids to pick up my bad habits! The kids are okay with TuxTyping, for a time. Something like Typing of the Dead sounds great, but is Windows only, and as far as I can tell one of a kind. I also don't want the young'uns hooked on first person shooters just yet. So are there any quality typing games for a range of ages?

• Thinkpad x201 Tablet - Touch doesn't work correctly under 12.04

  running 12.04 on my Thinkpad X201t. On the login screen the touch works fine, the mouse cursor appears where I touch the screen. After I logged in, it doesn't work anymore. If I touch the display, the cursor stays on the point where it was before, it doesn't jump to the touchpoint. I can move it, yes, but its chaotic. With the pen it works fine, but without the touch-function it's not enought for real tablet usage. So, would be glad if touch-function can be fixed. I'm very new to Linux/Ubuntu, so don't know where I can start. Haven't found anything in the system settings & Compiz so far, also no luck in google etc. Would be glad for help ;-). Of course I could go back to 11.04... but I would prefer to stay with the new system. Best, Joachim
