  I'm reviewing Azure web role logs and there's output from ipconfig /all IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.61.145.37(Preferred) . Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.254.0. Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Monday, September 24, 2012 12:26:00 PM. Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, October 31, 2148 6:55:12 PM. you see, the lease expires in year 2148 but my VM will likely not run for more than one month - when I deploy the new version of my code I first deploy it to new VMs, then switch traffic, then release the new VMs. In general such usage pattern is normal - VMs typically live from several dozen minutes to several weeks on Azure. I suspect the lease that long will cause problems on the internal Azure network sooner or later. Is such long DHCP lease okay or is it likely a misconfiguration?

• Exposing server uptime a potential security vulnerability?

  I run a browser-based game and as part of a page with a bunch of game statistics, I have the server uptime listed. It's currently at 177 days and so someone mentioned to me that I shouldn't do this because a long uptime indicates the kernel is old and therefore missing security updates. This certainly sounds logical, but I searched around and couldn't find any evidence to support it. So I'm just wondering, is this indeed something I should not have exposed?

  Amazon web services recently introduced a free tier, where you basically get free stuff to try out AWS and run tiny sites and projects. Basically it's free as long as you remain below a certain limit of bandwidth, disk storage etc. Since going over the limits can quickly become quite expensive (for a hobbyist) I would like some recommendations or suggestions about which AMI's I can run on the free tier, for the purpose of trying out Ruby on Rails and/or Django.

• saving excel files to file paths or directories with special characters

  I am unable to get excel 2010 beta to save to a directory which contains square brackets. I have to save elsewhere and copy in. Is there any workaround? Was this a problem with older versions? I realize that I could manually change the directory names, but I didn't want to forgo a long standing organization scheme for the sake of one program if possible to avoid the problem.

  I am using an open source application (conkeror) which is configured via a file containing javascript. Any issues with the javascript is printed to the console. This is fine under Linux as all the information is shown as long as the it is started from a shell. However, under Windows none of the information is show even when started from a shell. Is there a way to make this information displayed in the shell or to capture it in say a file?

What i need is basically a batch processor for audio which does it, and names the slices numerically. i'm on os x and found Audio Splitter, the shortest possible sample length with it is 1 second though, too long for my purpose.   I am running the command time 7zr a -mx=9 sample.7z sample.log to gauge how long it takes to compress a file larger than 1GB. The results I get are as follows. real 10m40.156s user 17m38.862s sys 0m5.944s I have a basic understanding of the difference but don't understand how this plays a role in the time in takes to compress the file. For example should I be looking at real or user + sys?

  I'm trying to generate a username using a single name field in excel which has the person's first name and last name. I'm open to what the username would be, as long as its intuitive for the user.   How can I limit the time spent on the computer or force a log out from a Windows 7 machine? I used to use Windows Steady State to limit users (kids) from being on too long but SteadyState does not work with Windows 7 Home Premium and is discontinued. Is there a way to set this up in Windows 7 where it will kick off a user after a set time? Or perhaps there's an alternative program that can help limit the time one user is at the computer.

Reducing COLUMNS environment variable is no op: (man less) But if you have a windowing system which supports TIOCGWINSZ or WIOCGETD, the window system's idea of the screen size takes precedence over the LINES and COLUMNS environment variables.   Clients that have been reporting their state fine suddenly start reporting "Windows 0.0" for their OS and "Not yet contacted" for their Last Contacted date even though previously these values were present and correct.   I have 4 VMs on a Linux host, call them A, B, C, D running on Z. I really don't care when A and B come up, but I would like to make sure that D comes up before C. I believe that in VMWare 2.x it's possible to change the boot order. Is this possible in 1.x as well? Is this done in /etc/vmware/vm-list? I see that there are a number of VMs listed there, including some that have long since been deleted.

  I have a long list of data in Excel. Using the Hyperlink function =HYPERLINK(C2,A2) i've added individual links to them all. Now i want to get rid of the function and just leave the data with the link. So i do Paste Special -- Values Which does the job but then the link is removed. How can i paste the values and keep the hyperlink?
