  I'm a java developer. I'm trying to get more knowledge to become a better programmer. I've listed a number of technologies to learn. Instead of what I've listed, what technologies would you suggest to learn as well for a Junior Java Developer? I realize, there's a lot of things to study.   Internationalization (i18n) is a way of designing and developing a software product to function in multiple locales. This process involves identifying the locales that must be supported, designing features which support those locales, and writing code that functions equally well in any of the supported locales. Localization (L10n) is a process of modifying or adapting a software product to fit the requirements of a particular locale. This process includes (but may not be limited to) translating the user interface, documentation and packaging, changing dialog box geometries, customizing features (if necessary), and testing the translated product to ensure that it still works (at least as well as the original). i18n is a pre-requisite for L10n. Resource is 1. any part of a program which can appear to the user or be changed or configured by the user. 2. any piece of the program's data, as opposed to its code. Core product is the language independent portion of a software product (as distinct from any particular localized version of that product - including the English language version). • Massive 404 attack with non existent URLs. How to prevent this?

  The problem is a whole load of 404 errors, as reported by Google Webmaster Tools, with pages and queries that have never been there. One of them is viewtopic.php, and I've also noticed a scary number of attempts to check if the site is a WordPress site (wp_admin) and for the cPanel login. I block TRACE already, and the server is equipped with some defense against scanning/hacking. However, this doesn't seem to stop. The referrer is, according to Google Webmaster, totally.me. I have looked for a solution to stop this, because it isn't certainly good for the poor real actual users, let alone the SEO concerns. I am using the Perishable Press mini black list (found here), a standard referrer blocker (for porn, herbal, casino sites), and even some software to protect the site (XSS blocking, SQL injection, etc). The server is using other measures as well, so one would assume that the site is safe (hopefully), but it isn't ending. Does anybody else have the same problem, or am I the only one seeing this? Is it what I think, i.e., some sort of attack? Is there a way to fix it, or better, prevent this useless resource waste? EDIT I've never used the question to thank for the answers, and hope this can be done. Thank you all for your insightful replies, which helped me to find my way out of this. I have followed everyone's suggestions and implemented the following: a honeypot a script that listens to suspect urls in the 404 page and sends me an email with user agent/ip, while returning a standard 404 header a script that rewards legitimate users, in the same 404 custom page, in case they end up clicking on one of those urls. In less than 24 hours I have been able to isolate some suspect IPs, all listed in Spamhaus. All the IPs logged so far belong to spam VPS hosting companies. Thank you all again, I would have accepted all answers if I could.

• Creating movement path displays in a top-down 2d RTS

  My game is a top-down 2d RTS coded in C# using SFML's libraries. I want that during unit selection, a unit will display it's movement path on the map. Currently, after the path is computed as a list of directions ({left, up,down, down, down, left}, as an example), it's sent to the graphical component to create it's UI equivalent, and here I'm having some problems. current, these I've checked three ways to do it: compute the size of the image (in the example above it'll be a 3*2 rectangle) and create an invisible rectangle, and then go over the directions list and mark each spot with a visible point, so as to get a continous line. This system is slightly problematic because of the amount of large images that I need to save, but mostly because I have a lot of fine detail onscreen, and a continous line obstructs the view. again, compute the size of the image, but now create several (let's say 4) invisible images of that size, and then instead of a single continous line I'll switch between the four images, in each will appear only a fourth of the spots, in a way which creates a path animation. This is nicer on the eye, but here the memory demands, and the amount of time needed to compute each such image-loop is significant. Just create a list of single markers, each on a different spot on the path. This is very quick & easy on memory, but too sparse. Is there a simple or resource-light system to create path-animations?

• Role based access to resources for a RESTful service

  I'm still wrapping my head around REST, but I wonder if someone can help with any suggestions or approaches to role based access control for a RESTful service, particularly from the point of view of securing the data and how the URLs might look. It's probably best to consider an example: Say I have a REST service for Customers, and want to split the users of this REST service into Admin, Editor and Reader roles: Admins can change all attributes of a Customer resource Editors can change only some Readers can only view them. Access control rights are assigned to the Customers entities individually. So for example a user of the service might have admin rights to Customers 1,2 and 3 but Editor access to 4,5 and Reader access to 7,8,9. Now consider the user calling the service. What is a good way to seperate the list of Customers for the current User? GET /Customer - this might get a list of all customers that the current user has Admin\Editor\Reader access to. But then on each Customer the consumer would need an indication of what role they have. Or would it be "better" having something like GET /Customer/Admin - return all customers the current user has Admin access to. Just looking for some high level pointers or reading on a decent way to secure\filter the resources based on roles of the current user.

• On Developing Web Services with Global State

  I'm new to web programming. I'm more experienced and comfortable with client-side code. Recently, I've been dabbling in web programming through Python's Google App Engine. I ran into some difficulty while trying to write some simple apps for the purposes of learning, mainly involving how to maintain some kind of consistent universally-accessible state for the application. I tried to write a simple queueing management system, the kind you would expect to be used in a small clinic, or at a cafeteria. Typically, this is done with hardware. You take a number from a ticketing machine, and when your number is displayed or called you approach the counter for service. Alternatively, you could be given a small pager, which will beep or vibrate when it is your turn to receive service. The former is somewhat better in that you have an idea of how many people are still ahead of you in the queue. In this situation, the global state is the last number in queue, which needs to be updated whenever a request is made to the server. I'm not sure how to best to store and maintain this value in a GAE context. The solution I thought of was to keep the value in the Datastore, attempt to query it during a ticket request, update the value, and then re-store it with put. My problem is that I haven't figured out how to lock the resource so that other requests do not check the value while it is in the middle of being updated. I am concerned that I may end up ticket requests that have the same queue number. Also, the whole solution feels awkward to me. I was wondering if there was a more natural way to accomplish this without having to go through the Datastore. Can anyone with more experience in this domain provide some advice on how to approach the design of the above application?

• A new day has dawned in my SharePoint world.

  Until I started working with SharePoint, I never thought I would be blogging.  I am usually a pretty private individual, but this thing called the SharePoint community pulls you in and makes you feel like you should be a part of it, contributing to it and giving something back.  So here I am blogging for the first time – and so begins my tale. I started my work life as a Systems admin, but was given a chance to start working with SharePoint 2007 back in - ironically enough - January of 2007.  It has been downhill from there or uphill depending on your perspective!  I jumped in with both feet and haven’t looked back.  Lucky for me Microsoft gave us a new version to work with.  A new job a couple years ago gave me the chance to work with that new version.  Now I spend my days weaving a tale of SharePoint for a Sales based organization. So why this blog?  To give something back. I spend most days toggling between administration, InfoPath, Branding and design, HTML, JQuery, and XSLT depending on the need.  The blog will detail these projects and solutions as best I can.  Hopefully they will be of use to someone who may be trying to accomplish similar things, just as many of the blogs that I have referenced over the last 5 years have been a huge help and resource for me.

• Localization of Database Strings in .Net

  I have several database tables that have a description column that I need to display in the UI. .Net has .resx files that will help with the translation of the strings, when the Thread.CurrentCulture.UICulture is set, but I needed a custom approach for the strings that are stored in the database and not in the .resx files. Here’s my approach: 1. Create a resource file for each database table and put them in the /Resources/Database/ directory. 2. Create a method in LocalizationHelpers (GetLocalizedString) that will get the string from the table for English (which should be cached to avoid unneeded service/database calls) or the resx when not English. 3. All database tables need to have a ResxKey field that matches the key in the resx file. 4. By convention the resx file will have the same name as the database table, and the key the same as the database ResxKey.   - if there are multiple columns that need translation, then one ResxKey will be used and Name or Description appended.   My game require an animation when one activity finishes and next started because I have develop game with multiple activity not as multiple scene per game. I have to show animation at the time of activity creation and activity destroy. I have trying to create basic animation that was supported by android. And all that xml file I have to post it into the anim folder but the loading of resource was so much high so any type of animation I provide using android method does not work for me it look weird. If scene class has some functionality for animation that please know me then I try to load different type of animation using scene. I have not create multiple scene because I have no awareness about how to manage multiple scene in andengine though I have a working experience of 8 months in andengine. So this help also provide me a great help. Basically I want to create animation like one activity slide out at the same time the other activity slide in. So at a time user can see the transition of activity. Thanks in advance.

• A programmer who doesn't get to program - where to turn? [closed]

  I'm in my mid 20's, and have been working as a full time programmer / developer for the last ~6 years, with several years of part-time freelancing before this, and three straight years of freelancing in the middle of this short career. I work mostly with PHP and the Drupal framework. By and large, I focus on programming custom pieces of functionality; these, of course, vary greatly from project to project. I've got years of solid experience with OOP (have done some Java & C# years ago, too) including intensive experience with front-end development, and even some design work. I've lead small teams (2-4 people) of developers. And of course, given the large amount of freelancing, I've got decent project- & client-management skills. My problem is staying motivated at any place of employment. In the time mentioned I've worked (full-time) at six local companies. The longest I've stayed at any company was just over a year. I find that I'll get hired and be very excited and motivated for the first few months, but the work quickly gets "stale." By that I mean that the interesting components (ie. the programming) get done, and the rest of the work turns into boring cleanup (move a button, add text, change colours, add a field). I don't get challenged, and I don't feel like I'm learning anything new. This happens repeatedly time and time again, and I always end up leaving for either a new opportunity, or to freelance. I'm wondering if perhaps I've painted myself into a corner with the rather niche work market (although with very high demand and good compensation) and need to explore other career choices. Another possibility is that I may be choosing the wrong places of employment, mostly small agencies, and need to look into working for a larger, more established firm. I find programming, writing code, and architecting solutions very rewarding. When I'm working on an interesting problem I lose all sense of time and 14-16 hours can fly by like minutes. I get the same exciting feeling when I'm doing high-level planning of a complex system, breaking up the work and figuring out how everything will tie-in together. I absolutely hate doing small, "stupid" changes that pose no challenge, yet seem to make up more and more of my work. I want to find a workplace where I will get to work on such tasks, be challenged, and improve in all areas of product development. This maybe a programming job, management, architecture of desktop apps, or may be managing a taco stand on a beach in Mexico - I don't know, and I need some advice and real-world feedback. What are some job areas worth exploring? The requirements are fairly simple: working with computers interacting with others challenging decent pay (I'm making just short of 90k / year with a month of vacation & some benefits, and would like to stay in this range, but am willing to take a temporary cut in pay for a more interesting position) Any advice would be much appreciated!

  I am working on a GUI in XNA 4.0 at the moment. (Before you point out that there are many GUIs already in existance, this is as much a learning exercise as a practical project). As you may know, controls and dialogs in Windows actually consist of a number of system-level windows. For instance, a dialog box may consist of a window for the whole dialog, a child window for the client area, another window (barely showing) for the frame, and so on. This makes detecting mouse hits and doing clipping relatively easy. I'd like to design my XNA GUI along the same lines, but using overlapping Textures instead of windows obviously. My question (yes, there's actually a question in this drivel) is: am I at risk of adversely affecting game performance and/or running low in resources if I get too nuts with the creating of many small textures? I haven't been able to find much information on how resource-tight the XNA environment actually is. I grew up in the days of 64K ram so I'm used to obsessing about resources and optimization. Anyway, any feedback appreciated.

  Is wordpress reliable enough and could it be used with a proper plugin as a medium sized ecommerce site? We are talking around 1500 products here, estimates say around 5 to 10 costumers per day, usually returning ones. Some days none. I have a client who wants to sell online. We are situated in a country where people dont see web as something serious enough. Still, they literally have a budget of pretty much none. And 1500 products to sell online. Magento, or any other open source ecommerce platform are out of the question, there is just no resources for starting something like that. Or any time. Only way is something free, small, absolutely not resource hungry as Wordpress. I have to fight with making it work with only what i have at disposal. Also, if you can recommend any wordpress plugin for the job(WP-ecommerce?), i will be very thankful. I guess something paid, up to maximum 50$ would work too.

• Problem connecting to Hsqldb via Hibernate when running a Eclipse GWT project.

  Hi, I'm trying to run a simple GWT project where I'm trying to do a simple persitence via hibernate to a HSQLDB database. The database I'm using I have been using for at least 2 years with several osgi applications without any problems. So all I done is reused the same configuration and added a simple object mapping file. The problem I have is that I get a socket creation error when ever I try to persist the object with in GWT jetty. I now the database is up and running, I can telnet to it, run OSGI projects that uses the same config with out problems.   I have 30 different RHEL 5.5 machines that will not update some 33 packages via Yum. Does anyone know why these packages will not install and how to correct this? Yum clean all does not fix the issue, however skip broken will allow other updates to install but I am really after a way to clear this up for good.
