• Get Info From Database, or Build Inferred Info?

  Does it make more sense to store and retrieve properties or information directly related to an item in a database, or, say in such a case that a product's ID could describe information about it, should the information be gathered from that? Example: Item SKU -- 4HBU12 4 - is the number of motors H - the voltage B - the color, blue U - the model 12 - the length Should I store those individual attributes as well as the SKU, or should I store only the SKU and build the attributes from it?

• Got an idea for an application, but part of it is patented, any suggestions?

  so I've been working on developing an idea for an application that I think has the potential to be successful, however after some initial research I've discovered that at least part of my ideas are covered by a patent out there, the patent in particular is held by a really large company (I don't want to give away specifics for fear I'd draw their attention for sure). I'm debating a few options: 1) Develop patents around my ideas that don't conflict and maybe approach the company in question for a license exchange 2) Just approach them for a license outright 3) Just develop around it anyways and hope for the best :-p What have other people done in these situations? Are companies generally willing to grant patent licenses? Are they willing to grant them at reasonable prices? Thoughts?

• Assign subdomains to separate ports on web server

  I have set up an Abyss web server as a little experiment, and I want to know if it is possible to assign subdomains to different ports on the machine the web server is running on. I have a couple webUIs that I'd like to assign subdomains: 192.168.1.1:8000 becomes example.com/webui1/ 192.168.1.1:8001 becomes example.com/webui2/ The webUIs are available by accessing their ports via example.com:8000. I have tried using a reverse proxy, but it seems that this is only usable on one internal IP at a time. What other options do I have? Answer is good, but my current set up doesn't meet the requirements. Abyss Web Server X2 is required to use Virtual Hosts with Abyss.

• Graphically intensive silverlight design

  I'm designing a silverlight application for showing sheet music from a midi file. I want to create a horizontally scrolling musical staff. At my job I maintain a winforms application that is a scrolling Gantt chart of airplane schedules, and it basically has a rows collection, and it maps the left-most pixel and right-most pixels of the control to datetimes. Then the paint method loops through what it determines will be the visible rows, and draws a screen that shows the schedule information between the two dates. Would I be correct in assuming that I would need to something similar in silverlight for my sheetmusic, or would it be better to just create a horizontal scrollviewer containing a canvas that I have drawn programmaticially on. Am I headed in the right direction? I havent seen any articles on designing such a custom control: can you point me at any?

Steve, as engaging as ever, covered our Apps strategy in the cloud and reinforced that Oracle has a complete set of cloud services including: •    Human Capital Management•    Talent Management•    Sales and Marketing•    Customer Service and Support•    Financial Management•    Procurement, Sourcing, and Inventory•    Project Portfolio Management•    Governance, Risk, and Compliance... all delivered on top of the Social, Platform, and Common Infrastructure.Steve talked about Fusion being the centerpiece of our Cloud Services. The fact that Fusion is 100 percent standards based is a big, big deal! In addition, our ERP Cloud Service is the most complete cloud service on the market. And email marketing is dead -- social marketing is where the action is. It's also where Oracle is investing heavily from a Sales & Marketing Cloud perspective. • Passing Parameters Between Web-Services and JSF Pages

  This is another quick demo that shows a common scenario that combines several demos I did in the past. The scenario – we have two web services, one returns a list of objects, the other allows us to update an object. We want to build a page flow where the first page shows us the list of objects, allows us to select one, and then we can edit that instance in the next page and call the second web service to update our data source. The demo shows: How to select a row and save the object value in a pageFlowScope. (using setPropertyListener). How to create a page that allows me to modify the value of the pageFlowScope object, and how to pass the object as a parameter to the second Web service. Check it out here:

  Fifty thousand attendees -- that's bigger than the cities some of us live in. Monday morning it took 20 minutes to get from Hall D in Moscone North to a conference room in Moscone South -- the crowds were crushing! A great start to a great week! Larry is as big a name as ever on the program schedule and on the Moscone stage. People were packed in Hall D and clustered around every big screen TV. He stayed on script as he laid out Oracle's SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS strategies. Every seat in Chris Leone's Fusion Apps Cloud Overview was filled on Monday morning. Oracle employees who wanted to get in were turned away. And the same thing happened in the repeat session on Wednesday. Our newest suite of apps is hot! Speaking of hot, the weather was made to order. Then it turned very San Francisco-like on Wednesday afternoon. Downright cold for those who trusted SF temps to hold in the 80's. Who did you follow on Twitter during the conference? So many voices, opinions, and convos! Great combo of social media and sharp minds. Be sure to follow @larryellison, @stevenrmiranda, and @Oracle for updates and MyPOVs. Keywords for the Apps customers at the conference were cloud, mobile, and social. • Packaging a web application for deploying at customer site

  I want to develop a django webapp that would get deployed at the customer site. The web app would run in a private cloud environment (ESX server here) of the customer. My web app would use a mysql database. The problem is I would not have direct access/control of the webapp. My question is, how to package such a web application with it's database and other entities so that it's easier to upgrade/update the app and it's database in future. Right now the idea I have is that I would provide a vm with the django app and database setup. The customer can just start the vm and he would have the webapp running. What are the other options I should consider?

• How to add a link group to update-alternatives?

  Is it possible to add a custom link group to update-alternatives that is not already there by default? For example, I want to add Scala and all its supporting binaries as a link group 'scala'. I'm trying using this script, but keep getting the error: update-alternatives: error: unknown argument `' I'm not sure what that means, but after troubleshooting the script a bit with no luck, I'm wondering if update-alternatives has a hard-coded list of link groups, that can't be added to, and that doesn't include scala. PS - any chance someone with higher karma can create an update-alternatives tag? Seems this topic gets a decent number of questions, but no tag for it.

  I am about to embark on an exquisite journey. I have applied for an event, where in span of 48 straight hours, strangers meet, throw around some great ideas, decide on teams, and make a working prototype of IT project. All within 48 hours. I anticipate, that this will be very skill and ability intensive experience, and I want to be prepared. Since i will need to develop my part of the code quickly, I have a following question: What would be the most needed skills for these 48 hours? I do know, that things like proper documentation, version control and such are pretty important for a full fledged application/program/web development, but for this span of frantic coding? Background: I am a web developer, so answers applicable to web development would be more appreciated than others.

• Tools for building long-running Javascript webapp

  Given my lack of familiarity with such tools, could you suggest what tools / frameworks would be suitable for developing a long-running JavaScript webapp? The webapp would display a constantly updating chart. The updates would come through WebSockets (preferably) or XmlHttpRequest. I know and have written JavaScript with JQuery, but for this task I assume something like backbone.js or ExtJS would be appropriate (or maybe not?).

• Hide debug information when running apps from the command line

  Most of the time running a gtk application from the command line it starts dumping debug information to the stdio even though I put them in background. Example: ~$ gedit test.html # and ctrl+z to suspend zsh: suspended gedit .zshrc ~$ bg [1] + continued gedit .zshrc ~$ # do some editing (gedit:6208): GtkSourceView-WARNING **: Could not find word to remove in buffer (whoosh), this should not happen! (gedit:6208): GtkSourceView-WARNING **: Could not find word to remove in buffer (haystack), this should not happen! I want to note that the error, or warning, changes according to what I'm doing at the moment. The GtkSourceView-WARNING shown here is one of the cases. Anyway... Do you know if it's at all possible to avoid getting that information printed out?

• Code to simulate a users actions, such as logging in

  I've recently begun working on a PHP application, replacing another developer. I believed the application was using an API to communicate with a remote service but when I looked through the code I found that it was using a set of functions to actually log in, fill out forms and submit them as a user might do in a browser. My intention is to replace this code, to use the services API instead. I've considered leaving the code as is and not replace it. It makes me wonder though is this a common practice in the software industry? To have a programme simulate a users actions in a browser to perform a set of actions? It feels to me that this is clever but poor programming, Have any other developers seen this?

• Create an Asynchronous JAX-WS Web Service and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g

  This posting is the result of a simple requirement to take an existing JAX-WS Web service,convert it to be asynchronous and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g It turned out that this is not a trivial task... BPEL has some very specific expectations about the WSDL for an asynchronous process. One approach is to develop the service starting from a WSDL document that meets BPEL's requirements. This is possible but requires considerable WSDL authoring skills. The other approach is to modify the WSDL generated by Web Service Annotations in Java code (Bottom up development) and instruct JAX-WS to use that WSDL instead of dynamically generating one from annotations. This is the approach taken in this article. This posting details how to: Modify a JAX-WS Web Service developed using a "Bottom up " approach to have an asynchronous method and callback.   I'd like to create a web wizard or a wizard on/within a website. I know there are several java frameworks for wizards but there is none for the web in particular. If I search for a framework, I always get wizards to create a website, applet, servlet and what not. But never how to create such a wizard itself. So the question(s) is: What framework should I use to create a web wizard? And what frameworks are there? The wizard will be the visualisation for a BPEL Process deployment on a apache ode. I thought a webapp would be an easy way because the apache is running anyway. I'm not bound to that, perhaps someone has a better idea.
