• How to prevent certain applications from accessing the internet?

  I want to prevent certain applications from accessing the internet. When I was using windows XP I had an application (i think it was Zone alarm) which always notified me when an application tried to access the internet. I wonder if there is an application in Ubuntu which would do the same task. If it is possible, please suggest a gui application. the problem is, my internet provider allows me to connect to a single host at a time, that means no two applications can use internet at the same time. When i checked system monitor it showing me that internet is working fine still my browser cant browse.So i want to kill the other application using the internet to browse.

• Choppy window movement in Gnome 3.4 on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have been using Gnome 3.2 since Ubuntu 11.10 was released and it has always been perfectly smooth and performed extremely well, much better than Unity. After doing a clean installation of Ubuntu 12.04, Gnome 3.4 performs less well. If just one window of a relatively simple application, such as Gnome Terminal, is opened and moved around, the movement is sometimes very choppy, but the rest of the time it's perfectly smooth. The times when it's choppy seem to be when part of the window goes off the bottom or right side of the screen. Also, if there are multiple windows open, it is almost always choppy. These facts suggest to me that it's something to do with the compositor. Unity works perfectly smoothly. Memory usage is only at about 500-600MB, out of 3GB, even with a few things open. The graphics card is the on-board Intel graphics on the Core i5 M450. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem? Thanks

• How to do a login page for third party service without letting them sign on?

  We have a unique situation (at least for me, first time seeing this). We have a web form where accountants can fill in requests and that part is taken care of. But after their login we redirect them to a third-party website where we need more information from them. The process is crazy right now since we have to give our account login info to all people filing with us. So is there a way in PHP or any other solution where we can after that form on our website auto login with our information to that third party website in a way that our credentials are not visible to the users using the service?

• What does Enable/Disable mean in Bing's URL Normalization feature?

  I'm in Bing Webmaster Tools, under Index URL Normalization. Many parameters are listed in the table with 3 other columns: Status, Source, Date. The "Source" column says "Webmaster" where I have added parameters, and "Bing" where I assume the parameter has been auto-detected. "Date" is probably the last date it detected the parameter. I've tried searching the help files but I can't find what the Status column means. The top of the page says: This feature allows you to specify query parameters for Bing’s crawler to ignore. But it's not clear whether "Enable" or "Disable" is related to this, and if so what happens in each case. Does anyone know?

• How can I make the unity sidebar visible permanently (as in, in all circumstances)?

  Yes, I have seen the other similar questions; if this is a duplicate please link me to the question that answer this, because none of them appear to; all appear to only address (1) of the two issues below: There are TWO times when the sidebar will magically vanish: 1) By default when you move your cursor off it and focus on a different app. This is fixable by setting the auto hide behaviour, as described here: How to make the Unity launcher always visible? 2) When you move a window over / under it, or maximize a window. Even when the autohide setting is 'never' this will cause the sidebar to mysterious decide to hide itself. In fact, it doesn't appear what settings you change, this behaviour refuses to change. This is extremely undesired behaviour. I'm using a stock standard 11.10 install.

• Best gui toolkit to use for creating 3D board game

  I have created a board game using Java and Swing - using GridLayout and various other apis. It works properly but the UI looks very very simple. I would want couple of animations like tilting the GridLayoutat any angle. There are pawns on boxes of the GridLayout that I want to be animated when somebody clicks on it. I'm not sure of the right GUI toolkit to use for this. Swing repaint is possible to a limit and cannot be used for a lot of animation and graphics. And I realized after creating the game that Swing is probably not a good tool to create games. Could anybody suggest a better framework to use that I can use it in Eclipse with Java? I was thinking of JavaFX or tools like Adobe Flash or Adobe Air. Any suggestions please?

  I have three sites running under the main domain example.com/en/ example.com/ar/ example.com/ur/ And there is a main HTML landing page example.com which have some introduction in three languages and links to three sites. Now i want this landing page to have a good SEO. and i want this page to appear in search in three languages. if someone searchs Arabic it should be in results with Arabic title and description, if someone searches in English it should response in English. • Python lower_case_with_underscores style convention: underscores not popular?

  PEP8 recommends using lowercase, with words separated by underscores as necessary to improve readability for variable and function names. I've seen this interpreted as lower_case_with_underscores by most people, although in practice and in Python's native methods it seems like lowercasewithoutunderscores is more popular. It seems like following PEP8 strictly would be awkward since it seems to suggest mixing both lower_case_with_underscores and lowercasewithoutunderscores, which would be inconsistent. What is your interpretation of PEP8's variable names, and what do you actually use in practice? (Personally, I like lowerCamelCase as a compromise between readability and ease of typing.)

• How can I generate signed distance fields in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-). • ETL Software Research Question

  Where I work, we use an in-house ETL solution that's homegrown and has been around for 5-10 years. I'm still new to my data analysis job, but I was wondering about the ETL tools that are out there. This is a new area for me. My situation, and job, is basically digging in a set of databases (DB2, SQL2005, Citrix, Ancient Cobol Database with a SQL Wrapper on top, MySQL, etc). Gather the desired information. combine the different datasets into one set. output into a file of choice (CSV, Tab Separated, Pipe Separated, XLS, etc). FTP to customer. I guess what my real question is, given my job, what are some good ETL suites that I can look at and compare to my in-house tools? This is more to research some other options. Ultimately, I'd either suggest a new solution or get options/ideas to improve our current app.

• Rhythmbox iPod Issues?

  basically, when I try and drag a song from my library to any one of my iPods (Classic (2.0.4 Mac), Touch (3.1.2. (7D11)) and Shuffle), nothing happens. It would appear that everything went ok, but... when I go to the iPod's library, the song is not there. When trying to transfer the file, there is no error etc. to suggest something that went wrong, and so I can't file a bug report on Launchpad etc. Does anyone know what could be wrong? Cheers guys! EDIT: I forgot to add that I'm running a 64-bit install of Ubuntu 12.04LTS and that Amarok and gtkpod don't even recognise that any devices are plugged in. Thanks.

  There was this question, which suggest the use of Nautilus actions So i installed that. I try to open it but it does not open. I'm not asking you to fix it since Ask Ubuntu is not a bug tracker. All bug reports here will be closed as off-topic Fair enough, and i don't have time to report bugs, anyway Nautilus actions doesn't seem to care about the bug, it was reported before no actions were taken. Thus I don't seem to care about Nautilus actions. My question is simple: I want to know is there any alternative to Nautilus actions, or even better, how to add/remove options from the right click menu manually (without using any other software).

• What are the tactics used to discover what kind of affiliate products will do well in your website?

  I'm starting to post some affiliate ads on my website. As it happens, I am not even close to making a sale. I'm not sure if the products I have chosen will appeal to the audience I have. I'm not sure if the volume of traffic is enough to support affiliate programs. I get about 8000-9000 visitors everyday. But since its growing constantly, thats not much of a worry. But I'm surely struggling to figure out what kind of products to market? (its a techie site). Is there a service/tool which can analyze the website and suggest what products will do well and what won't?

• Ubuntu 12.04 does not power off

  I'm not able to power off Ubuntu, which was working fine a couple of days ago. When I click shut down, a blank screen appears and stays like that forever. It does not power off by itself and I'm forced to physically power off using the power button. I've even tried 'sudo shutdown now' and 'sudo shutdown -h now' and both don't seem to work! Please suggest some fix for this problem. Thanx in advance. Edit: Restart works fine. Also 'sudo poweroff' doesn't work!

• Software requirements for replicating a Windows application

  I developed an application using Windows Form in C++ (IDE MSVC 2010). Some part of application also has MFC, and OpenCv. I want to send the application to my cleint for interim testing on his own machine. I have not developed any installer for the same, and so I will be sending him the.EXE file. I want that the client should not face any difficulty in replicating the experiment, and thus saves his time. Can somebody suggest me what all softwares(such as, MSVC, .NET Framework, Windows SDK etc) should already be installed on the client's machine for successfull testing of the application? Note: OS (Windows 7) and hardware is exactly same at both sides.

• Why is my content database so large?

  If your SharePoint site collection hasn't grown, but your content database has, the most likely culprit is versioning.  If a list -- or worse, a library -- has versioning enabled, the default is to keep every single one.  That means that every time someone edits and checks in a document, its storage footprint increases by the size of the document (and probably a little more).The solution?  It could be a bit painful, but you'll need to go back into each library and restrict the number of versions to keep (three is sufficient for most uses, but your needs may vary).  I suggest keeping only major versions as well, since minor versions are really just stopping points on the way to a published document.Of course if you have a real business need to keep all those versions around, then you'll want to look into an archiving solution that will take the old versions out of the content database but still make them available if necessary.

On the net I tried to get information and read books in order to better understand the overall IT infrastrcuture, but all the sources I found are too generic or, mainly, too detailed in just one aspect, making me lost. Could anyone suggest some books or web resources as good compromise in details? My goal would be able to understand the network issues and security threats when, for example, two remote system have to be setup and put in connection each other. Considering this scenario there are several aspects to consider: firewalls, intranet/internet interconnections, certificates for httpS, etc. The argument is quite wide, therefore I was looking for something that might help to start to understand this subject without going too deep in details (Computer Networks from A.Tanenbaum is a wonderful milestone, but way too specific for my scope).   Hi All, Recently I went to an interview for a C development position. Instead of asking me questions, they just gave me 20 code snippets to find out two logical errors on each one. I just couldn't complete all of the 20 since it took me time to go through each of these code snippets. My question is: Is this the right way to judge a candidate? If yes, how can I improve over my error detection skills so that I don't need to waste a lot of time in the next interview?   I want to change file icons of some specific file types like- .html, .css etc. I have tried using "File Type Editor (assogiate)" which is not working. I have also tried using "Gnome Tweak Tool" using icon themes. But that also does not worked properly (Though I can change folder icons , dash menu icons but not file icons). • How do I clear all gnome shell notifications?

  I use Jupiter as a power manager. Now I get a good number of notifications from it. I do not have problem with the fact that I get all these notifications. I do however, want to be able to clear all gnome shell notifications with a few clicks. Currently, my entire bottom edge of the screen is filled with notifications and I do not wish to clear each item one by one. So my question is, how do I clear these notifications? If this is not possible in the ui, is it possible to write an extension to do it? Where should I suggest this feature to gnome developers? Gnome forums are almost dead now, the administrator has not activated my created account since 5 days!

• Display not using xorg.conf?

  How can I force my PC to use the xorg.conf file ? I have it set up correctly and it is located at etc/x11/xorg.conf but it is ignored by at start up, I know the file is valid as I created it using nvidia-settings. • When Ubuntu Server restarts eth0 Doesn't come back up

  Every time I restart my Ubuntu Server 11.10 I can't ssh into it because ETH0 doesn't come up automatically. I never had this problem before upgrading to 11.10. I have to login to the server and start the ETH0 manually. I would appreciate it any help. Thanks.
