• Best Hardware for a server attached to LCD TV displaying a Flash frontend

  Hello, i need a recomendation on what hardware (PC) to buy in order to achieve this task: I have a webserver (WAMP) running in my laptop, this server has a webapp who can manage information from a user. In a few words, a user enter in my webserver and a php script ask gim for a mensage who get store in a MYSql database, in other hand, inside the same PC there is a flash running with a frontend who take this mensages and shows it. My english is bad, maybe this diagram may help you: Well i want to connect the pc who runs all (Webserver, MySQL server, Flash front end) to a LCD TV in order to create something like an information spot that will be on almost all day (sometimes all day). Do you recomend to have the webserver and the frontend in the same pc? or to separate in two? What hardware do you recomend? i mean, type of pc, with fans or no, please cheap solutions but good. • notebook display problem

  I have RoverScan Voyager notebook. It worked good for a few months. But some day I turned it on and saw that it displays badly. I mean, picture that should be displayed by monitor is copied six times and displayed on screen (6 same small pictures, not crossed each other). And the picture itself is bad - it displayed as interchange of vertical lines (it's really hard to see real picture or distinguish some details on it - it is distorted badly). Can you suppose, what's the reason? And what can I do to solve the problem?

• Are periodic full backups really necessary on an incremental backup setup?

  I intend to use an old computer I have as a remote backup server for myself and a few other people. We are all geographically separated, and the plan is to do incremental daily backups using rsync and ssh. My original idea was to make one initial full backup then never again have to deal with the overhead of doing it, and from that moment on only copy the files changed since the last backup. I've been told that this could be bad, but I fail to understand why. Since each snapshot is comprised of hard links to the unchanged files plus the original changed ones, isn't it going to be identical to a new full backup? Why would I want to make another full backup?

  I want to force ssl client verification for on of my virtual hosts. But get "No required SSL certificate was sent" error, trying to GET something from it. Here are my test configs: # defaults ssl_certificate /etc/certs/server.cer; ssl_certificate_key /etc/certs/privkey-server.pem; ssl_client_certificate /etc/certs/allcas.pem; server { listen 1443 ssl; server_name server1.example.com; root /tmp/root/server1; ssl_verify_client off; } server { listen 1443 ssl; server_name server2.example.com; root /tmp/root/server2; ssl_verify_client on; } First server replies with 200 http code, but second returns "400 Bad Request, No required SSL certificate was sent, nginx/1.0.4". Probably, it is implossible to use ssl_verify_client on the same IP? Should I bind these servers to different IPs, will it solve my problem?

• Why FreeBSD won't reboot after kernel crash?

  Once in a while I get my server running FreeBSD 8.0 amd64 fail due to bad memory (incompatible with motherboard) modules. Each time it happens, the box stalls with the last note saying that it will automatically reboot in 15 second, but it never does. How do I fix this? I need computer to reboot after kernel crash, unattended. (Please do not recommend to replace memory, as soon as I get the modules, I will, but I need a quicker solution that will not require me to stand still next to the box just to press the reset button each time it crashes.)

• Importing .eml files into Exchange Discovery Folder

  I am needing to import over 18mm eml files into Exchange (this is for a client, so I'm restricted on what I can do - flexibility). They do not want these emails to go to the actual users email, so they do not want them to show up in the users inbox, deleted ..etc. They want to be able to search for these emails for litigation purposes ... hence the discovery folder. I have looked into the Pickup folder, which does not do what I want. I have also been writing some C# code to use the EWS (Exchange Web Service) Managed API, but so far I have not found anything to work for me. The Exchange server is 2010 SP1. I have looked through other questions/answers and they do not really match up with what I'm needing to accomplish. These are older emails that have already been removed from the users mailbox. So to turn around and put these emails into the Users inbox would (of course) be very bad.

• Why would a machine ruin three "power supply"s?

  A client of mine has an XP era eMachines. The power supply has died and been replaced 3 times. I've discharged the motherboard and checked the surge protector. In the middle of a scan with ComboFix, the machine died. It powers on and hangs before the BIOS and shows a solid yellow light. I believe the model # is T5062 or something like that. Aside from a bad outlet, what would cause the PSU to die a few times?

• My D-Link's Ethernet bridge downlink just got 10-30x slower?

  TL;DR: I unplugged my network to move my desk, and now downloading via my DIR-655's Ethernet LAN bridge is 10-30x slower than the Ethernet switch it's plugged into. Background My network is SMC cable modem <-> Cisco firewall <-> Netgear switch <-> D-Link WiFi† | | | | SMC8014 ASA-5505 GS608v2 gigE DIR-655 rev A3 gigE †The DIR-655 is used as an access point, not a router (although what D-Link calls an access point, I'd call a bridge). The "WAN" port is unused; the Netgear connects to the built-in 4-port Ethernet LAN switch, inside the built- in router/firewall. Endpoints: MacBook Pro 17" mid-2010 iPhone 4S Fedora 12 Linux server running reasonably fast dual-Athlon X2, VelociRaptors, etc. All cables are <10 feet, mostly CAT-5e, some CAT-6, all premade. All WiFi endpoints are within three feet of the D-Link. Yesterday I unplugged and rearranged stuff, and now connecting via the D-Link - even through the wired switch, right next to the incoming network cable - is 30x slower than connecting directly to the Netgear switch, on both my MacBook and iPhone. How I'm measuring "slower" I'm mostly using http://speedtest.net, which of course only really measures broadband speeds. I've also installed http://www.speedtest.net/mini.php on my local server, but can't test the iPhone with that. Since ssh is choppy just with slow typing, I don't believe it's a throttling-type problem either; that's not a lot of bandwidth. What I've tried Swapping all "good" and "bad" cables Re-plugging "bad" cable from D-Link to Netgear and watching it be the "good" cable pulling cables away from power lines Verify that the Mac auto-detects the D-Link as gigE Try to verify the link speed of the D-Link <- Netgear connection, but the firmware doesn't report that Verify that the D-Link sees no TX/RX errors or collisions Use different Ethernet ports on both Netgear and D-Link Reset the D-Link to factory settings Upgrade the D-Link firmware from 1.21 to 1.35NA, 2010/11/12, the latest Reboot everything at least once On the Mac, disable Wi-Fi during the Ethernet tests, and unplug Ethernet during the Wi-Fi tests Using iStumbler, verify that the D-Link isn't picking overloaded Wi-Fi channels (usually just 1-5 neighbors on my and adjacent channels, average for my apt building) Verify that the only client connected to the Wi-Fi was the iPhone Verify that nothing was being chatty on my network according to the WISH log Enable and disable all sorts of D-Link settings, including forcing WAN auto-detect to gigE So. I don't mind buying a new access point—I wouldn't mind having a dual-link network—but as a guy who's been networking since gated v4 was a drastic rewrite, and who often used physical sniffers in the days before Wireshark, I'm baffled. I hate being baffled. What could I possibly have changed that would result in this? How can I measure it? All I can think of is a static zap—thick carpet, socks, HVAC—but I didn't feel one, and does that really happen anymore? Can I test if it's Ethernet vs. TCP layer slowness? I'm not familiar with modern network utilities; it's hard to Google without hitting "Q: Why is my network slow? A: Is your microwave on?"   I posted a question about the Laserjet 8100DN earlier here: http://serverfault.com/questions/139043/buying-an-old-laser-printer-what-will-need-to-be-replaced and from doing some more research I have a new question: I found the "maintence interval" -- "the interval at which you should install a maintenance kit" (which is a fuser and rollers), and it is...350,000 pages. BUT, when I look at the specs for an HP 8100 fuser, it says the fuser has a life span of 150,000 pages. What gives? – Will the fuser go bad after 150 or 350? ==== BTW I hope it's ok to ask another similar question in a new thread -- I'm just following instructions from my thread on the topic at Meta.

• Can I build or test a computer without a case?

  I am in the process of building a really nice new PC right now. It's going to have a nice Lian Li case with the internals powder coated black and all the wires will be sleeved. So my problem is I am getting parts in a couple days but my case will not be completed for about a month because it is on back order plus time to powder coat it. I am purchasing many of m y parts from newegg.com and they claim you must return any dead parts within 30 days or the invoice for there warranty to replace bad parts. So is it possible for me to set up the PC without a case just to test that the main parts are working correctly within the timeframe I am allowed? If this is possible, how do I deal with turning the system on/off without a powere button? Or is therer one on a motherboard? Thanks for any tips/advice

As there are several things, that can be done, before something bad happens, I'd like to have your suggestions in terms of good practices to limit backside effects of an attack and how to react in the sad case will happen. It's not just a matter of securing the server and the code but also of auditing, logging and counter measures. Do you have any good practices list or do you prefer to rely on software or on experts that continuously analyze your web server(s) (or nothing at all)? If yes, can you share your list and your ideas/opinions?

• chmod -R 777 /. - RHEL 5.5

  A shell script testing went bad and it issued chmod -R 777 /. to the system, instead of chmod -R 777 ./ and as expected it wiped the critical meta data. We have turned off the system and it will not function properly the next time it is turned on. I am told that rpm --setperms -a rpm --setugids -a should atleast fix the permission of the packages maintained by rpm. Is it worth doing? And is there any script available which will copy the permission from an identical system? To atleast get the box working. The Box is running RHEL5.5 Thanks!

He says he sent it twice---the first one bounced and the second did not. The email address he sent it to was: [email protected] My searches on Google indicate that the MAILTO could be a bad protocol but I didn't know how the email address would be interpreted by exchange server. What email address was the email sent to, how did IMCEMAILTO get there, and does it have any change of getting delivered?

• McAfee VirusScan Enterprise or avast! Free?

  I currently have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise on my computer. This was preinstalled on my PC. (My university did a bulk laptop purchase so I got a sweet deal on my laptop. McAfee was one of the extras that were included.) Apparently, it's getting bad ratings from sites such as Virus Bulletin and AV-Test. Am I better off with avast's free antivirus? Is it worth considering avast! Internet Security? I currently have a three-year license for VirusScan Enterprise. I keep my software up to date using Secunia PSI and I don't click on any suspicious links.

  I want to improve my personal password management. I usually use secure passwords, but overuse them for too many different places. My questions: What methods do you use to create passwords, e.g. for different online sites/logins? What methods do you use to remember those passwords? Memory? Pen&Paper? Software storage? Is there some good way to store my passwords somewhere, so I can always have access to them when I need them (e.g. a webbased solution on my own server) but at the same way keep them away from unwanted access? • Good quality voice communication software over Internet for windows

  I regularly attend over-the-phone meetings, where is a polycom/polispan device on the other side. The quality of the sound is bad, even those whose English is a first language sometimes are struggling to realize what is being said on the other side. I understand this is because of too aggressive audio compression in the line. Does anyone know any good audio chat software which does not over-compress audio stream. The IP channel between two offices is wide enough. In other words, you should be able to listen to a music (not only a speech) from the remote side with good quality. So, Skype is too over-compressing as well. Does anyone know anything like that?

• PS/2 vs USB keyboards: performance and energy consumption

  As far as I know, PS/2 keyboards are interrupt driven, while USB are polled. Typically a PS/2 keyboard was assigned IRQ_1 on Windows. I'm no hardware expert, but at a first glance seems like the PS/2 keyboards are more efficient. So here are my questions: On modern day computers, are PS/2 keyboard better (or faster), and if so, would it be noticeable at all? (e.g.: in gaming) Since they don't need polling, do PS/2 keyboards save energy compared to USB? (notice I'm not talking only about the peripheral here, but about the overall computer energy consumption). In case PS/2 had any advantage over USB, would adding a PS/2 adapter to my USB keyboard make the device as good as an actual PS/2 keyboard? Conversely, would adding a USB adapter to a PS/2 make it as bad as a USB KB? Thanks in advance.

• Graciously shutdown external HDD enclosure?

  I recently purchased a large HDD along with the following HDD enclosure: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817173043 It has a simple on-off switch on the back. When I want to turn this thing off, do I simply just flip the switch? I assume the switch simply kills the power to the HDD, but isn't that potentially a bad thing in the case that the HDD is still reading/writing? I used to have a Seagate external HDD and it had a button on the front that I had to hold down for a second or two before it would turn off, but it at least appeared to sort of go through a shutdown procedure where it probably would stop the HDD activity before cutting power. So with this external HDD, I'm a little bit leery about that power switch and understanding exactly what it does. Is this how all HDD enclosures are? EDIT: I'm running the drive in Ubuntu Server. So there is no 'ejecting' the drive lol

There is no full time IT staff. What I'm looking for: centralized administration - server is Windows Server 2003 minimal admin overhead ability to do e-mail notification/alerts/reporting would be very cool 10-25 XP Clients (P3/P4 hardware) free or discounted solution for non-profits We can get a cheap license for Symantec Endpoint Protection. My past experience with Symantec has been bad, but I've heard good things about this product. However, I've also read that it's kind of a nightmare to setup and administer, and may not be worth it for the size of our network.

• Dell 2950 Perc 6/i "physical disk" and "Enclosure(Backplane)" under Connector 1 in OMSA tree- Troubleshoot help

  Just looking for someone who might know why this could occur... In OMSA, on my Dell 2950, there usually is only one "Physical Disks" child under "Enclosure (Backplane)" in the tree view. Currently, the tree looks like this: Dell PERC 6/i Integrated Connector 1 (RAID) Enclosure (Backplane) Physical Disks (1:04 good, 1:05 removed) Physical Disks (1:33 Ready but unused) Normally it's like this: Connector 1 (RAID) Enclosure (Backplane) Physical Disks (1:04 good, 1:05 good) From the front, 6 of 6 3.5" SAS drives are connected. The server is showing Slot 5 as bad and the disk as removed. It seems that the drive in Slot 5 is being sensed as external to the Enclosure. Any ideas why this would happen? Think I can get away with rebuilding the virtual disk by replacing 1:05 with 1:33? Thanks.

• Lenovo t400 laptop docking station with DVI out shows green artifacts when connected to monitor

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop, with Windows XP. I have a docking station connected via DVI to my Samnsung monitor. I'm connected at 1920x1200 resolution and I keep seeing all these green dots (when colors are supposed to be near black). It's really bad. I have tried running on my Samsung monitor, at all sizes, even down town 1280x1024 like my monitors at work. When I use the docking station at work, I am able to connect 2 1280x1024 NEC monitors (one via DVI, one through VGA, both through my docking station). I have absolutely no issue there, both displays work great. I have tried to update the drivers, I've even installed the latest video drivers from lenovo's site (DEC-02-2010). Is anyone familiar with this issue? Details: Docking Station: Lenovo Advanced Mini Dock- 250410U - NIB Montior at home: Samsung T240 24-inch monitor Monitors at work: NEC monitors

Some notes: I login to the server using tunneling, nothing is open except dns, email, and web ports, not even ftp, and all default ports are change and hidden. • USB Wireless keyboards not registering Ctrl Alt Delete when computer boots

  I've recently installed a new PC at work. Its a Dell Optiplex 9010. I bought a USB wireless keyboard and mouse from Dell and subsequently from Logitech to use with this PC. The Dell keyboard is a model KM632 and the logitech is an mk260. Both units work properly and have decent range. The issue is when the PC boots they keyboard (neither model) will register a Ctrl+Alt+Delete to the PC. I can say for sure the keyboards are still functional as the media keys will still produce a result (notably the sleep key on the mk260). My gut reaction is I'm dealing with an issue in the PC or Windows. I'm not sure where to start though. If I unplug and reinsert the USB dongle both units will work. Also, I don't use both they keyboards at the same time I bought the Logitech fearing the Dell unit was bad. Any ideas would be appreciated.

• How much packet loss is normal?

  I started monitoring our network using SmokePing. Users occasionally complain about bad network connections, but the problems went away after some minutes usually. I now wanted to get some more quantitative information about those problems. SmokePing regularly pings servers inside our network, in a connected network and outside hosts. I only have a limited amount of control over our internal network and none at all for the connection to the outside and to the second network. I now see quite often (2-4 times a day) that packets to the second network and the outside are dropped. Most of the times it is 1-2 packets out of 20, sometimes more. Inside our internal network no packets are dropped. Is this an expected amount of packet loss, or does it indicate that something is wrong? I'm mainly wondering if I should bother the university IT department about it, or if I should just accept it as it is.
