  I'm a newbie in web programming. I haven't done anything that relates to website before. Now, my new task is creating a website using Java, Jsp, HTML, CSS, mySQL, Apache and Spring Framework (MVC model). I want to know what I should research if I want my website has the function as post entries, comment entries, delete entries, edit entries, etc as a forum? Which I need to know beside above things? • Detecting long held keys on keyboard

  I just want to ask if can I check for "KEY"(keyboard) that is HOLD/PRESSED for a long time, because I am to create a clone of breakout with air hockey for 2 different human players. Here's the list of my concern: Do I need other/ 3rd party library for KEY HOLDS? Is multi-threading needed? I don't know anything about this multi-threading stuff and I don't think about using one(I'm just a NEWBIE). One more thing, what if the two players pressed their respective key at the same time, how can I program to avoid error or worse one player's key is prioritized first before the the key of the other. example: Player 1 = W for UP & S for DOWN Player 2 = O for UP & L for DOWN (example: W & L is pressed at the same time) PS: I use GLUT for the visuals of the game.

• How to install Visual Python?

  I'm a Linux newbie but I'm determined to get my favorite applications on my laptop running Ubuntu 12.04. I just installed Cinnamon. I'm trying to install Visual Python and it requires Python 2.7. I followed the instructions on the VPython site but the Wine application isn't extracting anything from the Python .msi file. From the first line wine start /i python-2.7.5.amd64.msi /qn TARGETDIR=~/Python27 ALLUSERS=1 it says fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented. I created that Python27 directory so I know it exists and it's empty. I know Ubuntu already has Python 2.7 so I just tried running the VPython.exe file but it says "This program can only be installed on versions of Windows designed for the following processor architectures: x64." My Toshiba satellite has a 64-bit processor. Could anybody help?

  I have an Atheros AR8131 Ethernet card on a Lenovo b560 laptop. Sometime in the past, probably at some upgrade or other my wired connection stopped functioning. I know the card is ok because it works with windows. I tried upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 hoping the problem would go away. It didn't... Tried to google the problem, but all of the solutions I found didn't work for me. This is probably a driver problem. Any help will be appreciated. • Ubuntu Server 12.04 + Wine + Filezilla FTP Server help

  I am not very experienced with non-windows operating systems, so please if you can answer, consider me to be a complete newbie with this. I have a Ubuntu Server 12.04, I installed Wine on it so I could install some familiar programs with GUI on my Ubuntu. I installed Filezilla Server using Wine, that went fine, the server is running, but I cannot find the GUI anywhere. I know it is running because in the winefile, if I execute the filezille server.exe, it says it is already running. However I have not been able to configure anything on the filezilla server because I can't see it anywhere. What am I missing?

Some people don't make test cases and just develop the way their senior have done in their projects. I am facing lot problems like object dependencies (when want to test method which persist A object i have to first persist B object since A is child of B). Please suggest some good books or sites preferably for learning design pattern for unit test cases. Or reference to some good source code or some discussion for Dos and Donts will do wonder. So that i can avoid doing mistakes be learning from experience of others.

• Touchpad not working on HP DV4 notebook

  the touchpad doesn't respond at all. i had to use an external usb mouse even to install ubuntu. I dont know the name of the manufacturer too. i am a newbie to ubuntu. i checked many related answers but they didnt help some are: sudo rmmod psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps i used deconf editor_ in that it shows that touchpad is enabled but nothing haapens. i tried changing the setting 'disable while typing' that didn't work either. please help me. i really want to use ubuntu as i find it really good but without touchpad it would be pointless. literally.

• Inspecting the model in a Rails application

  I am learning some Ruby on Rails, and am a newbie. Most of my background is in ASP.net MVC on the back end. As I play with a basic scaffold project, I wonder about this case: you jump into an established Rails project and want to get to know the model. Based on what I have seen so far (again, simple scaffold), the properties for a given class are not immediately revealed. I don't see property accessors on the model classes. I do understand that this is because of the dynamic nature of Ruby and such things are not necessary or even perhaps desirable. Convention over code, I get that. (Am familiar with dynamic concepts, mostly via JS.) But if I am somewhere off in a view, and want to quickly know whether the (eg) Person object has a MiddleName property, how would I find that out? I don't have to go into the migrations, do I?

• Distance between two 3D objects' faces

  I'm really newbie on programming and I'm making some tests. I couldn't find nowhere on Internet how could I calculate the distance between two 3D objects' faces. Is there anyway? Detailing, as an example, I have two 3D cubes. Each one has a vector3 position designating it's center on the 3D space and an orientation matrix. And each cube has a size (float width, float height and float length). I could get a simple distance between them by calling Vector3.Distance(), but it doesn't consider its sizes, just the position. Then the distance would be between its centers. Is there any way to calculate the distance between the faces? Thanks for any reply.

Here's my point. I just crossed 3 conceptual layers with one line of code! this feels against my seperation-of-concern instincts but i wanted to hear your opinion. And for the sake of being on a question and answer site, I would like to know whether there is a better way of seperating these different layers - Service, Data, Controllers - whilst maintaining as minimal configuration as possible

• Fedora login gone after Ubuntu updates on a dual boot

  After a software update for Ubuntu, my dual boot with Fedora will not show Fedora in the start menu. It just boots into Ubuntu and when I hold Shift and boot, it only has Ubuntu in the list. • How do I create my own programming language and a compiler for it

  I am thorough with programming and have come across languages including BASIC, FORTRAN, COBOL, LISP, LOGO, Java, C++, C, MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, Ruby, Perl, JavaScript, Assembly and so on. I can't understand how people create programming languages and devise compilers for it. I also couldn't understand how people create OS like Windows, Mac, UNIX, DOS and so on. The other thing that is mysterious to me is how people create libraries like OpenGL, OpenCL, OpenCV, Cocoa, MFC and so on. The last thing I am unable to figure out is how scientists devise an assembly language and an assembler for a microprocessor. I would really like to learn all of these stuff and I am 15 years old. I always wanted to be a computer scientist someone like Babbage, Turing, Shannon, or Dennis Ritchie. I have already read Aho's Compiler Design and Tanenbaum's OS concepts book and they all only discuss concepts and code in a high level. They don't go into the details and nuances and how to devise a compiler or operating system. I want a concrete understanding so that I can create one myself and not just an understanding of what a thread, semaphore, process, or parsing is. I asked my brother about all this. He is a SB student in EECS at MIT and hasn't got a clue of how to actually create all these stuff in the real world. All he knows is just an understanding of Compiler Design and OS concepts like the ones that you guys have mentioned (i.e. like Thread, Synchronization, Concurrency, memory management, Lexical Analysis, Intermediate code generation and so on)

  First of all i am a newbie to Ubuntu Linux and have been trying to install and compile FFMPEG on an Ubuntu machine... • Can't get Broadcom 43142 drivers to work after installation on 5420 Inspiron

• CRT as 2nd monitor goes screwy after start up?

  new install of 12.04 on an old dell with a radeon ATI RV516 video card with monitor out and s-video out. During boot up all is good. Both screens operate and look fine. Then just before the desktop appears the cCRT goes purple and is covered in heavy horizontal lines, but as i said during boot up it was fine and the resolution was fine. The main monitor, an lcd, operates normally. everything else works fine, it's just the picture on the CRT that is screwed up.   I'm a newbie to Ubuntu and Im looking to run Java code from the command line. Ive checked that path as well. • Difference between ~/folder and /home/username/folder when creating a path in /etc/environment

  I had an executable script on my ubuntu located on ~/project/ directory and I tried to add that path to /etc/environment . So , I edit the path to this PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:~/project/" . Then , I logout and login back , open the terminal as su and run the command to execute my script on that folder but the result is command not found. Then, I change the path in /etc/environment to PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/home/r0xx4nne/project/" and voila it works.Now i can run the executable script inside ~/project/ without fail under su command. My question is , what's the difference between ~/project and /home/r0xx4nne/project when it comes in case of creating a path in /etc/environment ? Why it happened to be like this? I am a newbie and I just want to know more . Thanks for any reply .
