• What dangers await if I block non-standard, non-major-usa search engine bots from my USA only website?

  I noticed tons of bandwidth being used by non-USA search engine bots, so I began blocking them in an effort to save bandwidth and cpu cycles for actual users and the search engines they come from (Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, etc.). Other than potentially losing some international traffic (which isn't really important to us since all of our content is very USA-centric), what additional dangers should I be concerned about? I'm using a modified version of Jeff Starr's User Agent Blocklist

• My site is getting popular, bandwidth expensive

  I'm running a (small) image hosting site which has been getting a little bit of traction lately (2,000 to 5,000 visitors a day, spikes up to 10,000). It's hosted on Linode and I've already run out of the bandwidth for this month (300 GB). I've experimented with Amazon S3 but that was costing me $5 a day, Linode currently costs me $30 a month. I get a tiny bit of revenue from ads (Adsense and Black Label Ads) but it's not enough to break even. What should I do? Obviously I'd like to keep running the site but not if it starts costing me a lot of money.

• Correctly indexing multiple domains with same content in Google and others

  I have a client with a dozen territorial domains, like mydomain.co.uk, mydomain.fr, mydomain.de, etc Most of these domains hold a different language of the same dynamic content (shop), but some, like co.uk and .com, have the same language and content, except for some content customized to each country/domain in the front page, contact and other pages. I am aware that we should use the canonical meta tag to mark those duplicated contents, but, we want the co.uk to be present in UK ( indexed in google.co.uk ) and the .com to be present in US and other countries, for example, or least that is the goal. Is there anything we can do to "help" google determine the geographical meaning of each domain? If we mark with canonical tag the .com and co.uk sites, do you know how google will decide which one to show on a given search?

• The layout page "~/Views/Shared/_Layout.cshtml" could not be found

  I got this error and I can't figure out what is going on. I am positive the _layout.cshtml resides in the shared folder and for the sake of trying things out, I moved to the Home folder and it then told that the Views/Home/_Layout.cshtml couldn't be found there either. So now I'm thinking the problem is in the call for this file for some reason. I'm not going to pretend I know ASP.NET MVC4, so please when you answer, explain it as you would to someone who is not familiar with the system at all. Believe it or not, this error came from tutorial #1 ha ha Here's the code to show that I did code it right: @{ ViewBag.Title = "Home Page"; Layout = "~/Views/Shared/_Layout.cshtml"; } And here is a picture of the location p.s. • Goal completions 10x higher in dashboard

  I have the following table in my Dashboard: Page path level 1 Visits Goal Completions ----------------- ------ ---------------- /sub1/ 994 1,295 / 102 3 /sub2/ 10 1 I know my conversion rate is 10-20%, and that actually in this period I only had 183 goal completions under /sub1/. My goal is set as a regular expression for a particular page (/success?.*), and I have a funnel set up which tracks the page before the goal (/action). The actual urls hit would be /sub1/action then /sub1/success?1234 and /sub2/action then /sub2/success?1234. Why is my table in my dashboard giving me wildly wrong numbers? Have I done something wrong?

• How to resolve "Google can't find your site's robots.txt" error?

  I've recently found that "Google can't find your site's robots.txt" in crawl errors. When I tried Fetching as Google, I got result "SUCCESS", then I tried looking at crawl errors and it still shows "Google can't find your site's robots.txt". What can I do to resolve this issue? Before this issue arose, my site was indexed within a few mintues, but now I find that it took time to be indexed in Google's search. When I access http://mydomain.com/robots.txt, it shows the data below: User-agent: *Disallow: /wp-admin/ Disallow: /wp-includes/ I found Blocked URLs = 0, also no any other errors. Is there any other thing I need to change? Or what could be the solution for this? Any help would be appreciated.

• using Moniker.com's nameservers

  I have a VPS with A2Hosting for which i need to upgrade the OS. However, they've changed their VPS packages and forced me to order a new one. I went with an "unmanaged" package and have only just realised that they do not provide any DNS service at all, not even nameservers. Support tells me that "since your domain is not hosted with us, but with Moniker, you would not be able to use these nameservers. Your domain registrar should have a set of default nameservers that you can use, then create a A record to point to" my IP address. Moniker does provide for using their nameservers but i'm confused about which "pre-defined zone configuration" to use. They are: Domain Parking Domain Parking with Email Forwarding URL and Email Forwarding URL Forwarding URL Forwarding & CoolHandle Email I just want to use their nameserver and then create A & MX records pointing to the VPS. What do they mean by forwarding? I get the feeling it's a service that i don't want. Or, is it that i need to have a pre-defined zone only temporarily, and THEN set the A & MX? Which of these should i choose.

• Sex - in domain name is this bad???

  In short I am working with a company that does trade shows... one of their new domain names has the word 'sex' in but completely innocently. EXAMPLE: www. someproductsexpo .com (Being 'some' 'products' 'expo'). The content is completely inoffensive and I do not see there being any other things that would flag either the web or any emails sent from [email protected] as inappropriate. I was just wondering if any has experiences of any domains like this or comments to add? Thanks

  Hi, I want to achieve the following: Image a white sheet of paper on a black desk. Then rotate the paper a little bit to the left (like, 25 degrees). Now you still have the black desk, and a rotated white box on it. In this rotated white box I want to place non-rotated normal html content like text, tables, div's etc. I already have a problem at the very first step: rotating a rectangle.   I manage a website running on Apache. It has public and private areas. When people apply for an account to access the protected portions of the site, they do a TLS/SSL protected POST containing their information which is saved to a (hopefully) nonpublic directory on the server. Then I have a python script which takes URL Encoded POSTS with this user information, sends back a plaintext confirmation to the applicant, encrypts their information with a freeware java command-line utility to protect it (specifically this one: http://spi.dod.mil/ewizard.htm), base64 encodes them, puts them in a file as a mime attachment and uses sendmail to forward the file information to my (and several coworkers' scattered around the country) email account(s) on an Exchange server with Outlook clients. This has worked well for years, but is awkward because it involves manually decrypting the information on a windows box once it is received, using the above mentioned encryption utility. This significantly limits how many can be processed. I would like to be able to encrypt my information in a format that Outlook/Exchange can inherently understand and display so that these emails can be viewed simply by clicking on them. I do have company provided PKI public certs for all the people I need to send to, and am able to send/receive encrypted emails on Outlook manually, but would like to know how I can send to Outlook from apache/linux/python from the command line using the same PKI certs. Dont need to receive them, just send. Is there a utility that can do this? I had thought pgp might but I havent been able to figure it out.

• Small, fast shopping cart setup

  I'm looking for an open source shopping cart solution that's simple and easy to setup. The requirements are: Quick setup for someone familiar with *nix webservers. Checkout via PayPal (other payment methods not needed). Customers should not have to create an account to make a purchase. At least a minimal level of inventory control. Ability to print/export a list of orders in compact form. Any recommendations for something I should try? Ability to get it up and working quickly is really my priority right now; if it's not ideal, it can be replaced (or, as I'm looking for open source, I can adapt it to fit the requirements better) at a later time. Edit: Really what I'm looking for is simplicity. This will be for a small local business, and the orders will consist of 1-10 items that are being delivered by a driver who needs a simple list of what each customer received when making delivery. Looking like a giant online computer/electronics/etc. store is definitely not a desirable quality. The simpler the interface presented to customers (who are used to purchasing through dumb web forms and paying COD), the better.

• 302 Redirect causes garbage at end of Wordpress link in Facebook

  When I try to link my Wordpress blog to Facebook, the url doesn't resolve properly. There's garbage appended at the end and Facebook is not able to retrieve information from the site. Happens in every page, post or main entry. Here's what happens: http://clarissarezende.com.br/ shows up in Facebook as http://clarissarezende.com.br/UPLcS/ (when copy/paste the link) and no information about the site shows up in FB. I'm using Wordpress 3.3.1 with ProPhoto 4. Recently I moved the DNS entry on my ISP. The blog is hosted at clarissarezende.com.br/public_html/blog2 and before the DNS would point to public_html and then I changed it to public_html/blog2. Note that I did not move any Wordpress files. Made the (I think) necessary changes all over Facebook, but still no dice... Any ideas on what can be happening?

  Hi, We're looking to develop a simple e-commerce solution to sell 5-6 products. We'd rather not have to use PayPal's buttons (buy it now!) if there's an existing alternative, but would also for budget/time constraints don't want to roll our own. Are there any small, basic ecommerce solutions available that would allow this? I did look at Foxy Cart but the monthly fee was a bit of a turn off. (I must sound extremely fussy I'm aware!) Something like Zen would just be overkill for our needs. Thanks for any suggestions.

  all. I use blogger as a platform for electronic music blog. Because of the thematics of the blog I embed many iframes (Youtube & Soundcloud). Of course this makes the articles to load slow. Almost each article on this blog consists of some text and many iframes below. What should I do in this particular case in order to make the articles (pages) load faster. Is there any available solution or I should use some jquery like lazy load to load iframes once the scroller reaches them? Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Need to redirect Wordpress category archives

  I recently changed my Wordpress category structure a bit, changing some of the names and placing some under different parent categories. I don't use category name in my post URLs, so that's not a problem. But my category archive pages are indexed and have page rank I don't want to lose. So I need to redirect: "/category/old_cat_name" to "/category/new_cat_name". Or in some cases to /new_cat_name/new_sub_cat. I gather that I can't do this though the WP Redirection plugin and that I have to modify my .htaccess. Can someone show me what lines to add there--or is there another better way to do this? Thanks.

• Exclude category from Wordpress home page unless it belongs to another category

  I have multiple users adding content to restricted categories (using RoleScoper) in my Wordpress setup that don't show up on the homepage (custom template with query_posts()). I'm looking for a way to "promote" the submitted content to the homepage by adding it to another category. My loop code looks like this: <?php query_posts($query_string . '&cat=-37'); if (have_posts()): while (have_posts()): the_post(); ?> This will exclude all posts in category 37. However, even if I add the post to a different category it still gets excluded. Is there a way to exclude a post if it belongs to just that one category?

• need advice for small css issue [migrated]

  I have a small design problem in my css, and I'd like to know if someone could check it out for me. The design problem is in the rollover effect of my horizontal navigation. • Google webmaster tools / Geographic location settings

  I am building an website. It has an .nl domain. Now only my domain is showing up on google.nl I hope I can change this somehow that it could be findable in all google's (like google.com / co.uk) and so on. If I look on google forums. They say go to webmaster tools and change your geographic position over there. But I have added this site and I am not able to change it there because there is no select box. I dont have any idea were to search (yes I searched on google offcourse) or where to ask for this special problem. So maybe here can someone redirect me or explain me what is possible and what not. • Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

  I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance! • Subdomain still times out after being set up a month ago

  I would like to use the subdomain www.high-res.domain.com to be accessed by external customers with specific permissions to access the site (like FTP). We use Network Solutions to house domain.com. We recently added a new IP address to point to www.high-res.domain.com. I gave the IP address to the company that hosts our website. I pinged www.high-res.domain.com and it points to the correct IP address but still times out. It’s been a few weeks now and when you ping it, it still times out. C:\>ping XXX.XXX.X.XXX Pinging XXX.XXX.X.XXX with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Ping statistics for XXX.XXX.X.XXX: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss). tracert times out as well. I even went to DNS tools and a few other sites for checking this and it shows the same thing. I recently went into the DNSmgmt on our server (wink2k3sp1) and created an A record under the DomainDnsZones which translated to a CNAME when you look at it. Under the domain it has two entries, one to the subdomain and the other to the website host. Each has separate IP addresses. Is this correct?

• Using a front controller design pattern doesn't allow images to be served

  I am currently using a front controller. All requests for my website go through it. I have a problem with image links like: <img src="img/image.jpg" /> Then my front controller will try to dispatch the request to: application/controller/ImgController.php. Then the image won't load.
