• How can I stop Ubuntu from playing audio from 2 interfaces at the same time?

  Hi there, I just loaded Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick on my home machine. The machine is running a Core2Duo E6750 on an MSI motherboard with an Nvidia GTX260-OC Graphics card. The problem I am having as stated in the title is for some reason Ubuntu is playing audio through my headphone coming out from the computer and it is also playing the audio at the exact same time through the HDMI connection coming out of the graphics card, it has a plug to allow this. What is going on, I have never seen this before. Most importantly of all can it be fixed so that I can sepertate the 2 interfaces, the one is a standard PC audio IO and the HDMI one is connected through the mobo's internal SPDIF.   Suppose I have a preconfigured AMANDA server running automated network backups of directories specified in my disklists file. Normally, AMANDA will backup targets disks to /dumps/amanda. Is there any single command or method to perform a manual, one-time, full backup dump to another destination drive? I ask since I'm investigating the possibility of introducing rotating external hard-drive backups for offsite storage and I want to leverage our existing backup strategies wherever possible. Ideally, a full backup restore should be achievable from only any one of these offsite backup discs.

• Can't login into Fedora 14 (XFCE) desktop. For the second time.

  Hello. I'm experiencing a problem with my Fedora 14 XFCE spin, which doesn't seem to let me pass the login screen: I enter my password for my user record, authentication passes (no 'Authentication Failure' message, which was when I tried to login as 'root' without root login enabled), and the screen becomes black (command line) for a couple of seconds and (voila!) my login screen emerges again. I did nothing to cause that, it just suddenly logged me out when I was editing window manager settings via XFCE's built-in GUI utility (choosing window decorations style, from the listbox on the left) For the first time, I had to boot from live CD and do a fresh install, but I don't really want to do that again :) Is there some way to repair this (maybe login via command line and reset window manager settings, I don't know really)? • Is it possible to have a computer run two OS's in memory at the same time?

  I'm sick of needing to reboot my computer every time I wish to use another OS, or run a virtual machine that skimps on power. With the onset of large amounts of memory for computers nowadays I began to think that there must be some way to run two OS's in memory with a way to switch between the two. In my mind, it doesn't seem too difficult; a compatibility layer boots up after bios, which in turn boots to OS1. While in OS1, software is run that triggers a save to ram boots back to the compatability layer, and then boots to OS2. This way, the OS's can be used side by side and boot times are cut drastically short since both OSs are already in ram. Both OS's have their own designated and protected memory so there is no problem there... I mean, it seems fine, but no one has done it, so there must be some reason as to why. I would love some insight into this please.

• Can I get my video card to output a DVI and VGA signal at the same time?

  Hey All, I've got: a lovely 24" monitor, w/both DVI and VGA inputs, a personal desktop w/a Radeon HD Pro 2400 video card (both DVI and VGA outputs) a work laptop w/both outputs, and a KVM switch that handles VGA only Right now I've got laptop connected to the monitor's VGA, and the desktop connected to the DVI. This works, but requires me to switch the KVM and monitor input sources separately, which annoys me (I switch back & forth a lot to make skype calls & manage my music). I'd like to feed both VGA and DVI signals out of my desktop so I can do quick things on my desktop & switch right back, but then when I'm done working, switch the monitor over to DVI to get the crisper picture. Alas, just attaching both VGA and DVI cables to my desktop's video card did not do the trick. Can this card be persuaded to output both signals at the same time? Many thanks! -Roy

  Is it possible on Linux to find out which applications have accessed a certain file in the last 24 hours? I've come with a few possible solutions: Watch lsof. It works, but it's constrained to watch's granularity. inotify sounds good... but no information of the application accessing the file is provided. auditd may be useful, but I haven't checked that yet. What ways can I see which applications have accessed a certain file within a given time period?

  I have a Buffalo AirStation WZR-HP-G301NH I am able to access it's settings via 192.168.11.1 I'm connecting wirelessly with toshiba i686 laptop on Linux Mint Debian with service pack 3 and i686 dual core kernel This is just my home network but I know that there must be a way for large industries to shut their networks down or lock out their network access temporarily based on a time schedule, automatically. Like mon - fri the network provides access from 8am to 10pm and then automatically shuts down. I want this to affect all the computers accessing this netowork... basically all my families computers so that the internet just automatically shuts down at bedtime. I am running Linux Mint Debian and so maybe I need to make a cron job or something but does anyone know how big industries implement this and how I can do it privately? TIA

  Say that I have an application running on one PC that is sending commands via SSH to another PC on the network (both machines running Linux). For example every time something happens on #1, I want to run a task on #2. In this setup, I have to create SSH connection on every single command.   I need to run Firefox each time in a new profile directory with my extension enabled. What I do is the following: Create temporary directory for storing profile (/tmp/profile.123) Create extensions directory (/tmp/profile.123/extensions) Create extension proxy as described here (/tmp/profile.123/extensions/[email protected]) My command line looks like this: firefox -no-remote -profile /tmp/profile.123 -url http://www.google.com The problem is that my extension starts disabled, and I'm forced to enable it manually and restart the Firefox. Is it possible to make it start enabled in first place? Thanks! Workaround I've found: Create extensions.sqlite database file in the newly created profile folder. This file must contain my extension entry under the "addon" table.

• How do I get a chart in LibreOffice Calc to have regular time intervals when the data is not regular?

  I have an area chart in LibreOffice Calc where I would like the X axis to be measured in one month intervals spaced evenly apart. The data going into the graph, however, is not regularly spaced at one month. There can be zero, one, or two entries in any given month. Right now, the chart is keeping the horizontal pacing of the data consistent and adjusting the X axis to accomodate, which is the reverse of what I want. In the example picture below, you can see that there is one data point in March, one in May, and two in June. Along the X axis, April is gone and June is taking up double the space. Instead of this, I'd like the months to stay the same spacing so there is April, May, and June, and for the data area of the chart to compress or extend horiozontally as necessary. I have tried editing the X axis and adjusting the time intervals, but this doesn't seem to do anything. Is what I'm after possible?

• What would cause previously sent emails to be sent again from Exchange the first time someone logs i

  A few users testing our Citrix XenApp service found that several (seemingly random) previously sent emails were sent out immediately after they logged into Outlook via Citrix for the first time. The problem hasn't occurred for them since. After one user had this happen, and we scratched our heads about it thinking it was a fluke, our IT director had this same issue. I guess I'd rule out any PEBKAC issues. I really don't know where to begin troubleshooting this problem. If you have any ideas what could have caused this, I'd appreciate you sharing them, as strange or far-fetched as they may seem :)

• How to keep time on resumed KVM guest with libvirt?

  On my host I am using libvirt and a KVM guest. When the host is shutting down, libvirt suspends the guest. When the host is starting up, libvirt resumes the guest. The problem is, if the guest is suspended and resumed after 24 hours for example, then the guest time is 24 hours in the past. • Bad Resolution. Running Three screens at the same time

  Hi I am currently using three screens at the same time with my ATI 5770 & an active displayport converter. The thing is that the third screen ( the one that is using the active displayport converter ) is showing terrible resolution compared to my other two screens. ( Samsung syncmaster p23 ) two of my screens got a max resolution of 1920* 1090, meanwhile the third on is only capable of 1600 * 1200. Do any of u guys got any solution to this problem? • Is it bad to put your computer in sleep mode every time? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is the effect of always sleeping a laptop? Is it bad for batteries or something else? Often I have a lot of stuff open and don't feel like shutting down my laptop, so I just use sleep mode when I'm transferring it. But I have no idea if this might have any disadvantages. So my question is: is it bad to put your computer in sleep mode every time? Things I'm wondering: Should I turn off my computer every once in a while? Will continuous use of sleep mode slow down my system in any way? Are there any bad side effects (in the long term)? Any thoughts? FYI I'm using Windows 7 on a laptop

• Computers "applying computer settings" for a long time on start-up...why?

  Hello. Might be a bit of a slong shot but I'm stumped, along with the ICT Manager for the school I'm working it. In one of the IT rooms when you switch a computer on it will boot through BIOS fine, but when it gets to "applying computer settings" it can hang for a long time (~15 minutes). If you unplug the computer from the network it starts up fine, gets to the login screen, then you can plug the network cable in and it will work fine. I don't think it's anything to do with the fact we've been coming close to running out of IP addresses or a problem with our DHCP. Microsoft KB says apply the latest service pack, which we've done, and check a service. Servers and domian controllers are S2003, Computers and Desktops are XP. Does anybody have any thoughts on what to try?

  Our company wants to be able to have LCD TVs displaying TV with the ability to add an overlay, like a stock ticker at the bottom of the screen, where human resources can add content to be displayed. I have been trying to nail down the correct terminology for this and come across terms like Keying, Compositing, Live Broadcast Graphics Presentation, and Hardware Overlay but I don't know which of these terms is truly the correct way to refer to what I am trying to do. Black Magic offers a product that seems like it can do what I am looking for but their product seems like it is geared for a totally different purpose than what I would be using it for. Compix also seems to have a product that would do what I need but again it seems like killing a fly with a sledge hammer. How can I to take an HDMI TV broadcast and overlay arbitrary content in real time?

• How can I run 2 already installed OS at the same time?

  I have Win7 and Ubuntu installed on my PC, and I can choose which to run at boot time. I would like to be able to run the Ubuntu from within the Win7. Tools like VMWare allows one to create a new installation of a guest OS, which could then be run alongside the hosting OS. However, I already have the Ubuntu fully installed on my hard drive, and I'd like to maintain the dual boot option. Ideally, I'd like to be able to create a new virtual machine on my Win7, but instead of installing a new guest OS, just direct it to the existing installation. Is that possible?

  My goal is to copy INI.file each time Windows XP is started up or rebooted. The following VB script copies INI.file from a local directory to C:\INI_DIR. I tried to copy the VB script to C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, but it doesn't get activated. Is it not the right path? How can I make it execute on startup/reboot? • What determines the time to first ping response in an OS?

  When a server (say Windows, Linux) is rebooted, it will take some time to respond to ping. I'm assuming that the software firewall has to be up before pings will be returned as there might be a setting to disable ping responses. Everyone knows that Windows and Linux have have totally different architectures so lets treat them separately. The answer I'm looking for is "After XXX is running, pings will be returned." It would be helpful to know where in the boot order this is too. i.e. at the start or end. I ask because we get questions from a customer about why it takes so long to respond to ping after creating a Virtual Machine. I'm sure this is just an artefact of the OS boot behaviour.

• Why does m4 error "linux-gnu.m4 - No such file or directory" appear the first time after updating sendmail.mc?

  SendMail 8.14.x | CentOS 5.x I've noticed that if I manually update /etc/mail/sendmail.mc (for example, enable TLS support), and then bounce sendmail, I get the following error: Shutting down sm-client: [ OK ] Shutting down sendmail: [ OK ] Starting sendmail: sendmail.mc:18: m4: cannot open `/usr/share/sendmail-cf/ostype/linux-gnu.mf': No such file or directory [ OK ] Starting sm-client: [ OK ] This only happens one time after I update a sendmail.mc file. If I bounce sendmail again (without making any other change), I don't see the error any more. Any idea why this happens? It doesn't cause any errors - I'm just curious.

• Why does a Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc appear every time I connect to Windows Server 2003 SBS?

  I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?

  I have a server ClueReleaseManager which I have installed on a Ubuntu 12.04 system from a separate user (named pypi), and I want to be able to start this server at startup. I already have tried to create a simple bash script with some commands (login as user pypi, use a virtual python environment, start the server), but this does not work properly. Either the terminal crashes or when I try to ask the status of the service it is started and I am logged in as user pypi ...? So, here the question: What are the steps to take to make sure the ClueReleaseManager service properly starts up on boot time, and which I can control (start/stop/..) during runtime, while the service is running from a user pypi? Additional information and constraints: I want to do this as simple as possible Without any other packages/programs to be installed I am not familiar with the Ubuntu 12.04 init structure All the information I found on the web is very sparse, confusing, incorrect or does not apply to my case of running a service as a different user from root.

When user's workstations need to be reformatted for any variety of reasons, we reformat, reinstall windows from an oem disk, install drivers, install shop desired software, and restore user's documents from latest backup. While the process isn't very difficult it is very time consuming. What are some options simplify / speed up this process? Mostly a complete Windows shop with most servers running Win2k3 Enterprise and workstations running a variety of XP, Vista, and 7. Workstations are purchased through a variety of OEMs mostly Dell.

• Exchange 2010: How to retain mail in the outgoing queue for a certain amount of time before it is being sent

  One of our clients asked us to configure Exchange 2010 to retain outgoing mail for a certain amount of time (independant of Outlook settings.) The idea is that an administrator has about 10 minutes to take a message out of a queue before it is sent out the organization. I know this can be configured in Outlook, but this is not a valiable solution for us. I'm also aware that this causes queues to fill up, this is part of the consideration. Is there a way in Exchange 2010 to configure this?
