• Exposing entities via a nHibernate implementation RIA Services with querystring queries

  I once read a blog post and cannot find it anymore. drat! It was about a guy who setup a wcf service (I guess RIA, but could have been something else) exposing the model via IQueryable to the querystring. Sou you could say http://host/articles/123/ratings and you'd get a list (soap or json) of serialized Rating entities (the properties which had some attribute attached) which pertained to an article with id 123. All this with nHibernate / nh linq in the back and in surprisingly few lines of code. Anyone knows what I am talking about? Experiences, suggestions?

• opening iWorks documents in iPad UIWebView

  Hello, I'm writing an iPad application that has a UIWebView which I open word and excel documents in, but I want the user to be able to import those documents into the iWorks applications, Pages and Numbers, just like how you can do it in Safari if you open a document. If you open a document in Safari on the iPad, there'll be a button on the top bar that says "Open in..." and you can choose applications to open in. You get the top bar to appear by tapping on middle of the page. So is there an option you can set to allow UIWebView to show up the bar and automatically detect the content type and populate the list with applications you can import in? Or do I have to build this myself? And if I have to build my own, how do I open URLs to import documents into Pages and Numbers etc? Thanks, -David

• Linq to SQL inheritance and Table per Class - approach needed for multiple roles

  I am using L2S and an inheritance model for mapping Persons against certain roles. Guy Burstein's excellent blog post explains how to accomplish this: http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/bursteg/archive/2007/10/01/linq-to-sql-inheritance.aspx However, I have a specific case where a Person has multiple roles. For example 'Jane Doe' is a Contact and a Programmer. In this model, she would need two rows in the People table, one as Contact (PersonType = 1) and one as Programmer (PersonType = 3). If she changes her last name, and that update happens in her role as Contact, I would need to change all instances of 'Jane Doe' to reflect the name change everywhere. What sort of best approach (improved data structure) could be used to change last name within all roles? Finally, I am hoping to avoid overriding each general form update events to include all instances, but that may be the only way. Any suggestions or approaches appreciated.

• In Scala 2.8 collections, why was the Traversable type added above Iterable?

  I know that to be Traversable, you need only have a foreach method. Iterable requires an iterator method. Both the Scala 2.8 collections SID and the "Fighting Bitrot with Types" paper are basically silent on the subject of why Traversable was added. The SID only says "David McIver... proposed Traversable as a generalization of Iterable." I have vaguely gathered from discussions on IRC that it has to do with reclaiming resources when traversal of a collection terminates? The following is probably related to my question. There are some odd-looking function definitions in TraversableLike.scala, for example: def isEmpty: Boolean = { var result = true breakable { for (x <- this) { result = false break } } result } I assume there's a good reason that wasn't just written as: def isEmpty: Boolean = { for (x <- this) return false true }

• Insert objects into a collection with LINQ based on a property of the existing objects in the collection

  Hi, I've got a collection of object which contains data as follows: FromTime Duration 2010-12-28 24.0000 2010-12-29 24.0000 2010-12-30 24.0000 2010-12-31 22.0000 2011-01-02 1.9167 2011-01-03 24.0000 2011-01-04 24.0000 2011-01-05 24.0000 2011-01-06 24.0000 2011-01-07 22.0000 2011-01-09 1.9167 2011-01-10 24.0000 In the "FromTime" column, there are data "gaps" i.e. 2011-01-01 and 2011-01-08 are "missing". So what I'd like to do is to loop through a range of dates (in this instance 2010-12-28 to 2011-01-10) and "fill in" the "missing" data with a duration of 0. As I've just started with LINQ, I feel that it should be "fairly" easy but I can't quite get it right. I'm reading the book "LINQ in Action" but feel that I'm still quite a way off before I can resolve this particular issue. So any help would be much appreciated. David

  Hi all, Well, I'm a music fan guy, and now with my 18000 music collection, it's getting very hard to maintain. So, I would like to ask I could of question to help to write an app to maintain it for me. 1- How can I access a music file and read details of it? I mean, I would like to write some code and passing the directory, my app would read all the music files (understand mp3 files) and with that I would like to access details like title, artist, length and so on... 2- Is there a public source that I could access and update my file? A webservice somewhere that I could connect, query some information based on song name, or artist or whatever. I would like to achieve a final result of given a directory, my app would read the file, collect some information and query the source for a complete list of detail and update my file. • What is the correct way of handling a reloaded view after it was dismissed?

  Hi, I have the same problem as the guy here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2682844/uiimagepickercontroller-reloads-view-after-its-dismissed I have a UIView with a UIDatePicker within a Popover. When the Popover is dismissed and presented again, it sometimes resets the Picker in the view because hidden views are unloaded when a memory warning occurs. This is the part displaying the view: endCompareDateTimePicker.picker.maximumDate = [NSDate dateWithTimeIntervalSinceNow:0]; [endCompareDateTimePopover presentPopoverFromRect:sender.frame inView:self.view permittedArrowDirections:UIPopoverArrowDirectionAny animated:YES]; The picker (IBOutlet UIDatePicker) does not stay initiated. Adding a [endCompareDateTimePicker loadView] helped out and got me the picker initiated to set the correct date values before displaying the view. While this is working, I dont think this is the proper way doing this. What would be the correct way to handle this situation?

• Weird IF THAN not working with Requested data from URL text problem

  Hey all, i am checking for an internet connection by checking for a file on my server. The file only has the word LIVE displayed on the page. No HTML or anything else is there, just the word LIVE. When i run this code, i do get the NSLog as saying "LIVE" but once i go to check it with the IF statement, it fails and i just do not know why??? • After C++ - Python or Java?

  I'm fast approaching the point in my coding where I would like to quickly write object oriented code in languages other than C++ for a variety of reasons. After a lot of research, my choices have pretty much narrowed down to Python and Java. I'm leaning towards Python because of its relationship to C, but with Java, from what I can see, I get a good introduction to using and creating test suites with Eclipse - there is also Processing which is pulling me towards Java. I'm not the kind of guy to tackle two languages at once, so which one would you recommend and why? What I want at the end is to have an additional language I can use for rapid development. Ease of learning isn't important to me as I'm willing to put in the time regardless. Ability to use the new language widely is.

I mean will Apple pay the guy whose credit card I have used or can I specify my Account details for any future transactions & just use this credit card for paying Apple.   I used to use Spring.Net and want to switch to Ninject 1.5 (I have to use .NET2, since some unlucky guy like me still needs to consider users working with win 2k). I used to have everything done in xml and only invoke the container during startup. In this way, only very limited codes are depending on container. I have scenarios like this and I wonder how to do the same in Ninject. I have external config file, which are the items the end users can change basing on their environment/preferences. And some of my objects depends on those values to initialize. Mostly they are primary values, but some times can be list/dictionaries/etc.

• What's the deal with all of the abstract stuff?

  I see a lot of talk about MVVM, MVC, Design Patterns etc... You know, some guy has a blog, and he spent the last six months learning about one these things and desiging a program centered around that concept and then he goes on and on about it like its better than sliced bread. I read all of this crap and I wonder, whatever happened to simple logical programming? Not self-absorbed huge frameworks of design patterns and mvc and whatever else you can think of... just simple linear programming, perhaps a few classes to encapsulate things here and there.

• Loading jQuery with Tapestry 5

  Okay, so I'm not a Java guy, but I work with loads of them. We generally load Prototype with Tapestry 5, as Tapestry was built on this javascript library. As a UI/front end developer/engineer, I know the awesomeness of jQuery and the lack of prototype therein. (Feel free to debate that elsewhere -- this ticket doesn't concern that question, ha.) I've been curious for some time if it's possible to port jQuery into Tapestry instead of Prototype -- as in completely removing Prototype and Scriptaculous -- I realize it kind of defeats the purpose of the already bundled Prototype, but I wanted other opinions on the matter.   I'm a python guy and very new to R (so far, all I've done is copy-paste code and screen-shot the resulting, graph). I would now like to actually learn the language so that I can draw useful plots (right now, I am trying to plot this). In attempting my first plot, I came across this function call: sets_options("universe", seq(from = 0, to = 25, by = 0.1)) Now, I would like to know if I can achieve the same result by calling sets_options("universe", seq(0, 25, 0.1)) The help page for seq doesn't speak to this specifically (or I'm not reading it correctly), so I was hoping someone could shed some light on how R handles positional arguments I tried calling the function that way in R and it worked (no syntax errors, etc), but I don't know how to test the output of that function, so I'm forced to ask here

• Include an interface from the same package (Java)

  Hi, I'm new to Java (C++ guy myself) and am trying to compile a simple program (testing different random number algorithms) in Java. I have an interface that I want to use to implement another class with, both of these items are in the same package. So I have two files right now in my "Random" package directory--"RandomInterface.java" and "RandomTest1.java" (which implements RandomInterface). I can use javac to compile RandomInterface.java just fine, but I get the following error when I then try to compile RandomTest1: RandomNew.java:3: cannot find symbol symbol: class RandomClass public class RandomNew implements RandomClass ^ 1 error I declare both files to be part of the same package (Random) as the first line of each file. What do I need to do to include the RandomInterface class into the compile command for RandomTest1? Thanks!

• Regular Expression; Find whether a line contains any word with more than X characters.

  Hi, I am trying to use a Validator on a ASP.NET site and need to find whether the Street Address textbox contains a valid entry. Entries with words that are longer than X characters (in this case 25, with no punctuation or spaces) will cause the HTML on a printed A4 page to not wrap properly and therefore not to confrom to certain sizes correctly pushing the margins off. For a street address I want to match that something like "201 Long Road" is valid but "235 ReallyLongAndNarrowWindingRoadBesideTheRiver Street" is invalid. Using a Microsoft .Net Regular Expression Validator I need to know what the RegEx pattern might be. I think if it does find a match the Validator will fire correctly however if there is no match the Validator won't fire and the Update button (in this case) won't fire. Since Street addresses can contain Capital Letters and numbers etc. it will need to accomodate for that and also Spaces, Commas, Semi-Colons and Colons and Hyphens are valid characters too. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am really stuck with this problem. Thanks, David

• Connect to Oracle 11g using VS2010.net Drivers/Cleints

  Hey all i am trying to redistribute my app that uses Oracle 11g: Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Client The problem i am having is that it will not run on a machine that doesnt seem to have the correct drivers that its looking for. When i install ODAC 11.2 Release 3 (11.2.0.2.1) with Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio on the test VM it works just fine but thats a 230+mb file to download and install! Not to mention that if the user already has Oracle 10/11g on their machine that it may mess up their current connections/etc by installing that setup file. Is there another setup package that i can install that only has the Oracle Data Provider for .NET 2.0 11.2.0.2.0 or whatever its needing from that ODAC 11.2 Release 3 file. So any help about what i need to go about fixing this problem would be great! :) Thanks, David

The "CMTGetTelemetryMsg(int)" method returns a pointer. Do I have to "delete telm;" at the end of each iteration?

  MS Access: How to replace blank (null ) values with 0 for all records? I guess it has to be done using SQL. I can use Find and Replace to replace 0 with blank, but not the other way around (won't "find" a blank, even if I enter [Ctrl-Spacebar] which inserts a space. So I guess I need to do SQL where I find null values for MyField, then replace all of them with 0. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, The Find & Replace guy.

• Why are there two implementations of std::sort (with and without a comparator) rather than one implementation with a default template parameter?

  In my code I'm adopting a design strategy which is similar to some standard library algorithms in that the exact behavior can be customized by a function object. The simplest example is std::sort, where a function object can control how the comparison is made between objects. I notice that the Visual C++ provides two implementations of std::sort, which naturally involves code duplication. I would have imagined that it was instead possible to have only one implementation, and provide a default comparator (using operator< ) as a default template parameter. What is the rational behind two separate versions? Would my suggestion make the interface more complex in some way? Or result in confusing error messages when the object does not provide operator Thanks, David

  I'm fairly new to Rails and Rack, but this guy had a seemingly straightforward write-up about using Rack to implement dynamic session domain middleware. The code looks good to and I've implemented it here on my local machine, but I'm still not able to transcend top level domains on a single login.   Hi there, I'm making a Twitter client in Java, and I've came to a problem I don't know how to solve it. How the hell I store open auth for twitter? I mean it doesn't make very sense for a person to allow an application every time he wants to use the client. I've been look at the Twitter documentation, but I must say, it's really poor in terms of Java. So do you guy have some idea to solve this? Thanks in advance!
